MacBook to MacBook Networking Issues

Recently, I tried setting up a connection between two MacBooks via Airport so we could exchange some files. We turned filesharing and ftp on and firewalls off- the same procedure I had used to connect my old ibook to many a mac.
Once our MacBooks recognized eachother, I clicked "connect," signed in as a guest and was able to mount the shared folder of the other ibook, just like I always had.
The other MacBook, on the other hand, only came up with the dialogue box requiring I enter a user name and password with no option to be a "guest." Even after typing the appropriate username and password, I couldn't establish a connection from the second MacBook to the first one.
I tried connecting directly using the IP address, but no dice. After about an hour of tinkering with newtork and sharing settings, I decided to give up. Is there any logical reason that one MacBook shouldn't connect to the other even though they had established a connection in the other direction?
As a side note, I couldn't make a bluetooth connection between the machines, either. I'm not really worried about the bluetooth as much as the airport connection though.

To connect to another computer on your home network as a registered user, you need to enter the administrator's name and password for the computer you are trying access.

  • Macbook networking issues

    Hello.
I've got a couple of Windows networking issues and am hoping someone can point me to the answers.
    1. My old Dual-core G5 Mac can see Win7 PCs on the network and they can see it,
but of course it's running an older version of OS X.
    2. None of my Win7 PCs can see the Macbook by name but they can see it by
IP address. I'd like to be able to "Browse" the network and see Macbook.
    3. My Macs cannot "Browse" the network at all. I have to know a PC's name
to connect to it, but would rather be able to browse the network.
    Is any of this fixable?
    Thanks.

    Nothin' eh?

  • IMac and Macbook Pro Networking Issue

Just recently both of my Macs have developed a wierd networking issue.  I am sharing folders on my Windows server (WHS), now this odd slow issue appeared when using a file from the server.  It acts like my network is really slow when opening a file, but my windows machines work fine on it.
I have not made any changes to the server, I am running a Gigabit Cisco network (not linksys) in my home and this thing has got me stumped.  I installed an anti-virus on the iMac and it found nothing.  Either wired or Wireless I see the same results but only related to the Mac's..... does anyone have an idea what might be doing this?  I am kinda a Mac noob in most aspects so I am looking for any help here.

It very well could be the antivirus app, most are intrusive and debilitate rather than enhance performance and should be removed using the developers instructions. You haven't really told us anything useful such as any settting you may have changed. However if you began working backwards resetting any changes and uninstalling the apps added since the performance issue started then you probably will find your issue.

Go step by step and test.
    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
        Restart the computer.
        Start up in Safe Mode.

    2. Empty Caches
        Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
    3. Deselect Proxies if selected.
System Preference > Network > Advanced  > Proxies Tab
Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if selected.
        Click "OK" then  "Apply”.

  • MacBook Air 2010 network speed drop sharply after download starts

My MBA 2010 started having network issue a few month ago. The symptom is:
    1. Sometime, the network speed (both in and out) drops to 0B/sec suddenly and all connection died, then comes back after a few sec.
    2. When downloading large files, the initial download speed was great, 2MB/s, but sharply dropped to 20KB/s after a few sec. And never increase.
I have another MacBook Pro on the same home network. Never had such issues with it. I also tried to download the same file from both machines at the same time or one after another. No matter which way, my MBP can consistently have 2MB/s speed, but my MBA only had 20K/s.
I had this issue with MBA when it was running snow leopard. And I thought it may deal with OS. So just upgraded to Mountain Lion (clean install). But still the same issue.
But when speedtesting with www.speedtest.net, MBA still works pretty good, 18mbps download, 4mbps upload. This really confuses me. I begin to suspect if my airport adapter is broken or getting flaky. Any help or suggestion will be appreciated.

Ok, when I take the MacBook Air into the room with the Airport Express the Internet Connection works well and the Airport Utility shows the Phy Connection as 802.11 a / n as opposed to 802.11 b / g / n
Does this tell me anything about why when connected to the Network via the Airport Express that I am having trouble connecting to almost any URL?  Sometimes it connects but very slowly.  When I do get through to the Speedtest things look Ok but with some serious valleys in the graphic.

  • Macbook connected to network but no internet

    Hello,
I am having a very strange and concerning internet issue with the Macbook in my household. It can't access the internet even when connected to a wireless network. I know this is not a network issue because a Macbook pro, iphone, and ipod touch all connect to my network at home and can access the internet just fine. Also, the Macbook was unable to access the internet when connected to the school network while my iphone and other computers could.
The problem started suddenly last Monday. Prior to that the internet had been working both at home and at school. It appears to be connect to the network because there are full airport bars and a check mark next to the network (in both locations) but it can't find the airport in the Airport Utility (while at home since the school doesn't use airport). Additionally, it wouldn't connect to the internet directly through the ethernet port either when I plugged it directly into the cable modem.
In the System preferences it has a Self Assigned IP. The preferences are the same as they were when it was working and nothing looks wrong. On Thursday I tried the fix someone posted on this forum of deleting the network from the preferred networks and then adding it again and it worked at home for a day but it still wouldn't work at school and yesterday it stopped working again at home. When I tried to the fix again it didn't work. Also, I've tried repairing permissions twice and that hasn't done any good either. Additionally, it happens under both users on the computer and the test user I created.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Incredibly slow MacBook, Internal Hard Drive issues...

Good morning everybody! I'm apologize if this post is extremely wordy...
I am extremely baffled by a particular issue with a MacBook 2.0GHz C2D which belongs to a friend of mine. The warranty is expired.
    _Brief history:_
Several months ago, this MacBook could not find a bootable volume. The drive would not mount when booting from an external FireWire hard drive. It would not mount when the MacBook was put in Target Disk Mode and connected to another Mac. When booting from an external USB hard drive or with my MacBook Pro connected to the MacBook via Target Disk Mode, the MacBook booted up quickly. I came to the conclusion that the internal hard drive must have failed and needed to be replaced. Ultimately, the data was not recoverable from this drive.
I then proceeded to swap out the defective Apple OEM Seagate hard drive with a known working Apple OEM Fujitsu hard drive. When booting from the Leopard Install DVD, the MacBook would boot incredibly slow, but would finally reach the Installer Language screen. When proceeding to install Leopard, the drive would take a very long time to have data written to it, and ultimately the install failed. I removed the new hard drive from the MacBook and placed it in an external USB enclosure, attached it to the MacBook and booted from the Leopard Install DVD. Leopard would install successfully. I removed the hard drive from the enclosure and reinstalled it the MacBook. When booting from the freshly installed OS, the MacBook would take a very long time to boot. The MacBook is extremely slow!!!
I checked the Activity Monitor to ensure CPU & System Memory Usage was not going crazy. All Processes where normal with adequate CPU & Memory headroom.
I took the MacBook apart thinking that the SATA Controller Cable might be loose. No, it was firmly in place. I reassembled the MacBook and booted it up again. Still incredibly slow!
Finally, after several reboot attempts, the MacBook would book up quickly and operation was perfect. I applied all updates and continued testing the MacBook with great success. Gave my friend his MacBook back and he was grateful.
    _Now for the kicker..._
My friend brought me his MacBook a week ago complaining that the MacBook was operating extremely slow (much like when I was initially testing it before). I verified the MacBook was slow when I tried using it. I tried several reboots and then it would get stuck on the gray Apple with spinning gear.
I tried booting into Single User Mode, but it gets stuck on "Waiting for root device"
I put the MacBook in Target Disk Mode and connected it to my G5 2.0GHz Dual Core. The hard drive would mount quickly on the G5 and I used Disk Utility to create a Restore Image. The disk operation would perform normally and the image would be created successfully.
I then partitioned the MacBook's hard drive when connected to the G5, ejected and proceeded to attempt OS reinstall. No dice! The hard drive is not even detected by the Disk Utility on the Leopard Install DVD.
Finally after several reattempts, the hard drive is recognized, but is extremely slow when trying to reinstall...and again, ultimately install fails. Using Disk Utility from Leopard Install DVD, the hard drive fails to unmount when I try formatting.
I don't have Apple Hardware Test disc for the MacBook or Apple Service Diagnostics disc for this model. Running TechTool Pro shows hardware to be okay, disk controller onboard the Fujitsu drive is okay, but running SMART & Surface Scan takes a long, long time (which I'm certain will ultimately error out). Running Drive Genius takes a long, long time as well.
    Conclusion:
I think the SATA Controller Cable is defective. I can't think of anything else that would cause disk errors or performance issues like this. Your input is truly appreciated!

Even though no one responded to my post, I thought I'd share the resolution with the entire Apple community. I hope this information will be helpful to some of you with MacBooks or MacBook Pros that may be running painfully slow or may be exhibiting hard drive issues because your machine won't recognize the boot drive or fails to properly boot on a perfectly healthy S.M.A.R.T. verified hard drive. It just might be the hard drive connector/cable. Here it goes...
I visited my local Apple Retail Store and asked a "Genius" at the Genius Bar about this issue and told him my thoughts about a possible failed hard drive connector/cable. First, he didn't even know what a hard drive connector was! Then, he arrogantly stated that he never heard of such a thing and that these cables never fail. Finally, he blatantly dispelled this as a possibility.
On the contrary with my experience, I have had many failed PATA controller cables that required replacement when supporting the desktop PC's at work. I have personally owned and supported many Apple manufactured laptops and desktops and have never encountered this issue on a Mac...until this MacBook!
So, after looking at the Service Manual for the MacBook, I went over to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider and purchased the Hard Drive Connector Apple Part #922-7579. I replaced the original cable, reassembled and proceeded to boot the MacBook with the Leopard DVD installer. The Fujitsu drive was immediately recognized and was able to be formatted and Leopard installed without incident. The MacBook boots off the internal hard drive as normal again and works nice and fast again.
Thank you all for your time!
    :D

MacBook to iBook - Networking ethernet/firewire/IP/Sharing - This is the problem:
    1. Firewire : I setup with firewire a MacBook to iBook IP network hub to use my MacBook over the iBook the net. Works 4 times without a problem, easy to set up, great ! Now it won't - green network status symbol in Sys>Network on booth computer. Firewire port selected on the top, as been advice already
( http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2003/11/11/panther_internet.html )... IP Address is activ, but now it won't go on the net over my iBook with the DSL modem. Can't use the modem on my MacBook(SpeedTouch 330) Thats why ! But what is the problem now with the firewire connection ?
    2. Ethernet : Same problem as with firewire and i have this: Conect to server - "Registered User" - ask me for Password ? No Password is setup on booth computer, but it refuse to conect : "Conection Failed" Unknown user, incorrect password ! Strange stuff...
Any help or advise would be great
Many thanks for help in advance !

To connect to another computer on your home network as a registered user, you need to enter the administrator's name and password for the computer you are trying access.

  • Use Your MacBook as a Network Bridge in Snow Leopard (10.6.2)

    Hey everybody,
I am trying to use my MacBook as a network bridge for my Sony Blu-Ray (BDP-S350) player so it can receive the updates that it needs. I need to know the steps to make your Mac a network bridge. Any Suggestions?

I'll guess that your MacBook connects wirelessly and that your player needs an Ethernet connection. In that case, in OS X 10.5 the way you'd do what you need to is to open the "Sharing" panel of System Preferences, then enable "Internet Sharing" by clicking on the checkbox next to it. Set "Share your connection from" to "AirPort" and below that check the box for Ethernet. The steps for OS X 10.6 are probably similar if not identical.

    Thanks.
I'm reluctant to wade into this but I noticed that if Mactracker is to be believed, the Early and Late MacBook Pro have the same Model Identifier, which would suggest that the SL installer for the Early MBP might see the Late MBP, which came with Lion, as close enough for government work. While the SL installer wouldn't necessarily be 100% suitable for the Lion Machine and probably wouldn't allow installing over the existing Lion partition, I can imagine it working on a clean partition or external USB or Firewire drive. A 10.6.8 combo updater could then configure the SL installation for the MBP it's actually on.

    Hi Michael,
It sounds like your router's authentication is set to WPA and thus where the key is established. Does your MacBook Pro connect to a wireless router? If so, that's where you'd need to get the key from via a web-based control panel for the router or if it's an AEBS via AirPort Utility.

  • Airport, 10.5.8, and MacBook and MacBook Pros and slow internet

Disclaimer: Apple does not necessarily endorse any suggestions, solutions, or third-party software products that may be mentioned in the topic below. Apple encourages you to first seek a solution at Apple Support. The following links are provided as is, with no guarantee of the effectiveness or reliability of the information. Apple does not guarantee that these links will be maintained or functional at any given time. Use the information below at your own discretion.
If you have Macbook or MacBook Pro, and have upgraded to 10.5.8, you may experience slower than normal airport connection due to a bug found in the original 10.5.8 installer. Apple has released this update for MacBooks and MacBook Pros to address the issue:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortClient_Update_for_MacBook_and_MacBookPro
To amend what Apple has stated, the System Profiler will indicate you have one of these three MacBook/Pro CPUs:
    o MacBook3,1
    o MacBook4,1
    o MacBookPro4,1
If you have certain third party routers the update above will not help. In which case, it is recommended that you contact the third party router manufacturer for a firmware update, and find out also if others have your exact same router, and have found a resolution with your issue.
Wireless issues can be caused by the following:
    1. Interference on the same wireless channel.
    2. Single channel connection from some third party routers not being strong enough to deal with interference. Apple Airport Express, Extreme, and Time capsule wireless routers all support dual channel connections, and also support networking with Windows as well as Mac.
    3. Bad router tables in your router.
    4. Power surges.
    5. Interference from microwaves, or 2.4 Ghz non-cell wireless phones, whose signal is not tempered with channel hopping.
    6. Distances less than 2 feet may have many overlapping wireless waves causing interference from the wireless router.
    7. Distances greater than 150 feet from the wireless router.
    8. Walls with numerous pipes, improper ground wiring, file cabinets with numerous papers between the computer and the router.
    9. Run the hardware test that came with your computer, it may indicate an issue on the logicboard which could also impact your wireless card.
    10. Improper security on your wireless connection. Setting up a WPA2 connection is preferred over WEP, which is preferred over no password.
    11. 802.11n is a draft standard, meaning not all routers support it the same way.
    12. Data corruption in the wireless cache settings, caused by improper system maintenance:

    13. Migrating wireless settings with the Migration Assistant from a PowerPC to Intel Mac, or vice versa. It is better to follow these tips to avoid those problems:

Not everyone will get this problem.

  • MacBook and MacBook Pro competing for airwaves

    Howdy,
I have an Airport Extreme set up as wireless router, i.e., the cable modem is plugged into the Extreme. Elsewhere in the house, an Airport Express is set up to extend the network. We have both a MacBook and a MacBook Pro, both running Leopard. When both laptops are accessing the web, it seems as though they were competing for the connection because the MacBook systematically gets slower connections, lags, and sometimes gets disconnected entirely.
Following some advice I found elsewhere in these forums, I downgraded the firmware of the Airport Extreme to 7.3.1. Here are its main settings:
    - participate in a WDS network
    - radio mode: 802.11n (b/g compatible)
    - channel 11
    - security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    - DHCP server distributes addresses between 10.0.1.2 and 10.0.1.200
Both the Extreme and the Express use the same channel. I tried changing it with no success.
Upgrading the firmware does not resolve the issue. The MacBook Pro is never disconnected; it always comes ahead of the MacBook. The two laptops are not dealt the same IP address, but somehow, there is a competition. When the MacBook Pro is turned off, say, and not accessing the web or anything else, the MacBook does not get disconnected.
Has anyone seen such a situation before? I might have misconfigured something.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
    Dom

In a WDS setup, everyone uses the same channel (in your case 11).
If you can run an ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to the Airport Express you can eliminate the WDS mode and instead configure your 2 base stations for WiFi Roaming, and you can put the Airport Express on a different channel (eg. Ch1).
The Airport Express gets its connection to the router via ethernet. The Express is configured into "Bridge Mode". The Express is given the exact same SSID as the Extreme. The Express is given the exact same password as the Extreme. The Express is set to a different channel (Channel 1 would be a good choice, unless your neighbors are using that, in which case you want to be at least 5 channels away from your Extreme and any neighboring base stations with strong signals).
This will give you a Roaming setup where as your move around the house, your MacBook and MacBook Pro will automatically switch between the strongest base station, but because everyone is using the same SSID and Password, you do not loose your connections.
And each base station is using its own channel.
If you do have neighbors with strong signals, you can use something like "AP Grapher", iStumbler, KisMac, MacStumbler, etc... to see your neighbors, the chanels they are using, and the relative WiFi signal strength so you can choose the channels with the least interference.
If you can not run an ethernet cable between the Extreme and the Express, but you really like the idea of a Roaming network, then you could look into PowerLine ethernet adaptors for getting an ethernet equivalent between the 2 base stations.
