MacBook to Macbook Pro Migration - missing apps

Hi
Please help! ... I had a MacBook with Lion installed and recently I bought a MacBook Pro (2nd hand) I did the migrationg thing, etc. But now I can't open the app store and a couple of other apps because this MacBook Pro only has 10.6.8
I'm kinda stuck cause I can't upgrade anything (OS, apps, etc) since the app store won't work. Anybody knows a way that I can fix this? I'd definitely appreciate any help here.

The first thing you should after buying a used computer is to erase its hard drive and reinstall the OS. If you did that and installed 10.6.8, then you have the App Store application. If you didn't do it, I suggest you do so now.

Removing strange software can be a task. The following outlines various ways of uninstalling software:
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a Startup item or a Log In item. Startup items are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the Delete [-] button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Note that you must have this software installed before you install software you may need to uninstall. Uninstallers won't work if you install them after the fact. Here is a selection:

After removing all the components of the software you may have to restart the computer to fully disable the software. This will be the case when removing software that has installed a daemon. I solved this problem tonight. I have a MacBook Pro with 10.5.8. I know, it's old. But I love my Netflix and I recently noticed that Firefox plays Netflix much better. Then I suddenly got this message that I needed to download the latest Silverlight - it only takes 30 seconds! - WRONG. However, after much searching, I finally did the steps in order and it worked.
This was after repeatedly downloading Silverlight from the Netflix site without success. So here's what I did:
1. Went to http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx
2. Followed the directions. I felt like such an idiot for not doing it right before.
3. Go to your hard drive and search for "Silverlight" to locate ANY existing Silverlight files: .dmg, etc.
[also check your Libary/ Internet Plug-ins, but the above search is faster]
4. Drag it all to the trash and empty it.
5. Go back to the Get Silverlight page and click on the Install on that page, not the Netflix site.
6. Note the steps for Safari or Mozilla Firefox - I wanted Firefox, so I follwed those instructions.
7. Once it's installed, close all the browsers and Restart that bad boy. Right away.
8. Open a browser, go to Netflix and proceed to joyfully rot your brain with Netflix content. Yay!

Time Machine did not restore my MacBook Pro, many iOS apps were missing and replaced with "?" in the dock.

This weekend I had issues restoring my MacBook pro using Time Machine. I was left with question marks in the dock for the folloing apps in Bold, the others are not on the dock but they could not be found..

11. Notes

They were not in Finder, and as the Lauchpad icon was not there I could not check there either. Spotlight was not showing them either. They simply were not there on the Mac.
I checked on Time Machine and they could not be found there either. I don't believe they were backed up by Time Machine in the first place. I do not have any programmes or applications excluded in the TM preferences.
Its interesting that all my 3rd party apps were there, all the missing ones are from the Maverics iOS.
I ended up having to reinstall Mavericks via a VERY SLOW internet connection and hey presto, everything came back to normal.
It was a very tense few hours as I thought I had lost the lot, photo's and itunes collections etc.

I do like Apple products, but this has left me a little unsure about them now, its like the trust and confdence goes when you catch your child stealing and lying to you...The confidence will come back but I guess I will always be a little warey now..

It appears only the applications where missing. So your own data were safe all the time. However...

It appears the bug is very difficult to reproduce, mainly because in most cases it is only discovered when people try to restore an existing installation.

My question is, I currently have a mid 2009 macbook pro (2.8GHz, 4GB) and was wondering which firewire cable I need to purchase - there are so many different types!

A number of problems exist including the notorious MacKeeper. Start by removing it according to the instructions below.
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice).
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it.
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
An apparently modified Hosts file is another concern, which is apparently blocking Adobe software requests to contact its server for whatever reason it needs to do that. If you know the reason for altering Hosts then you can troubleshoot it on the basis of that knowledge. If you do not know the reason, it often occurs as a result of installing pirated or "cracked" software to circumvent its ability to contact an external host to verify their software was legitimately obtained. If that's the case then anything is possible as a result of having installed illegally obtained software.

Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. For Safari, go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone. For browsers other than Safari, perform the equivalent actions.

You need to be much more circumspect regarding the software you choose to install on your Mac. May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?
Although you may easily override that setting, it will serve to protect you from inadvertently installing garbage.

ICloud does not update emails in Mail on my MacBook Pro unless Mail app is open

Hi, looking for some advice
Up to a few days ago whenever I started up Mail in my MacBook Pro the e-mails I had received on my iPhone/iPad were pushed through and were visible as read.
Only now unless I have the MacBook runnig with the Mail app open they don't come through.
I can force them to synce if I move the emails on my iphone into a different folder, then back to inbox, but only while the Mail app is running.
It's annoying as one thing I like is being able to read the emails on my mobile devices then reply later from the MacBook when I get home.
I did change my iCloud password recently but it is the same across all devices, I removed the iCloud account from mail and system prefs then added them back but no joy.
I'm fairly sure it all started when I updated to iOS7 on the iPhone & iPad but cant be certain as I dont use the MacBook every day,
Any suggestions??

OK, I persevered and used the Rebuild mailbox option on Mail, actually had to do it twice, but now when I boot up and Mail opens all the previously received iCloud messages I've read on iPhone/iPad are pushed through.

When migrating from a pc to macbook pro migration assistant caused multiple user accounts how do I get the data all in to one account now that it is migrated ?

I am switching over to apple from a PC platform and I have tried to use migration assistant to transfer the stuff on my PC to my macbook pro. When i tried the first time the two went to sleep due the long time required to transfer 13 GB of data and the transfer failed. I tried to transfer again only opting for some of the data but when I did it created a second user account . I tried again and now I have transferred most of the data but I have it in three user accounts. Not what I wanted to do. Is there an easy fix for this or do Ineed to start from scratch ?

The files, PDF-docs, that I attach to my mail, Macbook Pro OS 10.7.5., are missing when the receiver opens the mail.
In this case the receiver is a MS Windows/Office user.

i have the same issue, i do not want to use Microsoft outlook, i want to use mac mail.
i have a PST file which its size is around 18 GB, i used PST Converter PRO, but it converted the PST file to a folder contans subfolder and files, the size of these folders are 68 MB.
i tired to import this new folder to mac mail, it was giving a message that will be discplayed under folder name "Import", but unfortunately, there was nothing added.

How can you accomplish an efficient migration to a MacBook Pro from the original MacBook if the new one no longer has ethernet, firewire 800 and the new one has USB 3.0?

Direct migration between 2 computers can be done via FireWire or network - prefereably ethernet rather than WiFi. Migrating via ethernet between 2 computers capable of gigabyte enet is acceptably fast but if you are using a router make sure it too is gigabyte compliant and not 100 meg. The other solution is to use an external backup drive (TimeMachine or clone) and migrate from it. Since you should be keeping an up to date backup anyway, this is probably the easiest solution.
The difference in speed between FW and USB turns out to not be the major factor in using the Migration Assistant as one might expect. Looking at the theoretical speed difference between the two you'd expect FW to be tremendously faster. In my own experience I've found that with Migration Assistant it is faster but not tremendously faster it isn't.

Resetting macbook pro without deleting apps, photos, and music

Is there a way to reset a macbook pro without deleting downloaded apps, photos, and music?
I have dropbox and i have a lot of college notes store on my laptop so I want to make sure that is preserved. I also do not want to delete any photos and music. I have a 13" and I bought my macbook in 2012.

I am unable to update iphoto, imovie, and Garageband on my Macbook Pro. I understand that these apps are part of ilife suite. Purchased Macbook at Best Buy January 2012. All software is updated. I recieve message asking me to sign into account that I purchased these apps from. I am signed in , however I did not purchase these apps they came on Macbook. I also tried deleting Garageband and re-installing it. Now Garageband says accept but Macbook will not accept. Anyone else have this problem and were you able to resolve it.

The fact that they were preinstalled is why they are supposed to appear in the Purchased pane, in a temporary area labeled Purchases, for you to accept. Not doing so soon after you got the Mac has messed this process up.
To get things back on track properly try these steps;
Updating Pre-installed iLife apps -
1 - Log out and quit iTunes and the Mac App Store (MAS)
2 - Go to System Prefs/Users & Groups/~user/Password and enter the Apple ID connected to your iTunes/Mac App Store account. Close Sys Prefs
3 - Delete /Mac HD/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist
4 - Reboot your Mac
5 - Open Mac App Store
6 - Go to the Purchased pane and Accept the three iLife apps. Enter iTunes/MAS username/password if prompted.

MacBook Pro migration to my new Macbook Air.

I just bought new MacBook Air and need to do a migration from my Macbook Pro. I tried migration assistant but they aren't finding each other. Air is on 10.7, Pro on 10.5.8.

I had a similar problem with my MBA on Lion and my iMac on Lion. They found each other but Migration Assistant kept stalling. In the end I migrated from the Time Machine backup on my Time Capsule to my MBA. It worked absolutly fine.
