MacBook, to my iBook?

How do I xfer my itunes music from my MacBook, to my iBook? I have wireless, and also firewire connected to both.

Hi pfhannan,
Since you have a firewire cable the FireWire Target Disk mode would be the best way to go. Do the following:
1. Switch on the iBook; leave the MacBook off.
2. Connect one end of the firewire cable to the iBook, the other end to the MacBook.
3. Switch on the MacBook and immediately press and hold the 'T' key.
4. When the firewire symbol appears on the MacBook let go of the 'T' key.
Your MacBook is now in FireWire Target Disk mode and it's hard disk will appear on the iBook's desktop. Simply double click it, navigate to where your iTunes Music folder is and drag it to the iBook's desktop.
When the transfer is complete, eject the MacBook by dragging it's hd icon from the desktop to the trash. Press the power button on the MacBook to switch it off and disconnect the firewire cable.
You can now move the transferred iTunes folder from the desktop to it's 'proper' location which is in your ~/Music folder.
When you now fire up iTunes it should read from that folder. You may, if you haven't already, need to update iTunes so that it's the same version as that on the MacBook. You can do this via Software Update.

Hi - I'm trying to sync iBooks on my Macbook Pro with iBooks running on my iPad. I have some pdf's download from the net I want to share between devices and I can't work out how to sync the two devices. Any help please? I'm running Mavericks

Thanks for your help Brij011 - much appreciated. Apologies as I'm a newbie but I've looked at the info for synching and I appear to have all the switches flicked on my iPad. Does the iPad and iBooks only sync in iCloud for purchases as I appear to be doing something wrong. I could sync ok when books was in iTunes but since migrating to Mavericks I think I'm doing something wrong!!

  • Wireless router for iMac, MacBook Pro and iBook G4

I am in a deep trouble finding a wireless router which could be configured by a Mac and working with iMac, MacBook Pro and iBook G4. Please recommend me a wireless router

Any 802.11 b/g/n or 802.11 b/g WiFi router will work. Any router can be configured by a Mac. While some now ship with fancy configuration software that attempts to mimic the easy setup of an Apple base station, they all can be configured via a web browser. My own preference is NetGear.

  • Connecting macbook keyboard to iBook...

I upgraded from my iBook G4 to a MacBook in June, yesterday I realised I had some files on my old iBook that I wanted to get hold off, but I couldn't log into my iBook due to some damage with the keyboard... I haven't been keeping it very well since I stopped using it, so I can't tell what exactly, (maybe liquid?) but though it switches on fine etc... The keyboard does not seem to be working at all, and as it's password protected I can't log in to move anything...
Is there any way to connect my current macbook to my old ibook and use my macbooks keyboad? I hope this isn't a silly question... Does that make any sense?
If not, will connecting a regular keyboard (from my brothers desktop pc for example) work?
    Thanks in advance. x

You can't connect the Macbook to the iBook keyboard. You can use a USB keyboard and connect it to the iBook and use it that way.
If you connect the two computers with a firewire cable and boot the iBook while holding the T key the iBook hard drive will boot into target mode and it will appear on the MacBook desktop. YOu can then drag and drop what you need from the iBook to the MacBook.

  • Portability of MacBook Vs 12' iBook G4

I had an 12'iBook G4 till yesterday, when i dropped it with damage severe enough to make buying a new iBook/MacBook a cheaper option. I loved the iBook because of its size, but the macbook seems to be fairly bigger. Can you guys give me some input regarding how it the macbook compares with ibook?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Well, the MacBook is a little bit heavier, and has a slightly larger footprint. But something about the MacBook just seems to make it more portable to me than the iBook. After I got the MacBook, I found the iBook to be kind of clunky, and large (because of the thickness). The MacBook also seems MUCH more sturdy than the iBook. I remember with my iBook, the plastics weren't fitted very tightly together, the hinge was a little loose, and it just seemed kind of cheap. The MacBook, however, is very sturdy and the hinge has a perfect feel to it. I love my MacBook!

  • Macbook memory to ibook?

I've just bought a new macbook, which was originally with 2GB memory and i've had 4GB put in it. Now i've still got the two !gb cards that came out of the macbook and would like to put one of them in my Ibook g4 1,33 ghz. Is this possible or are they not compatible???

PC2700 is for your iBook G4 and PC2-5300 is for your MacBook. I don't think you are going to be able to use the RAM from the MacBook in your iBook. Sorry!

All I get is the folder and question mark. Ran disk first aid and tech tool pro and it said can't repair the disk. Is there anything that anyone knows that ca help. I don't want to lose all mt old files from my Ibook!! Help Please if you can.

+Ran disk first aid and tech tool pro and it said can't repair the disk.+
Were these run from the install CD/DVD?
You might try booting your ibook while holding the 'Option' key down - this might give you your usual HD to start up from. Make sure the firewire cable is no longer connected.

  • How does Macbook compare to ibook?

    Hi--
I currently have an ibook G4 and love it; however, I am running out of memory (I have an 80GB HD but a lot of video files) and would like a second Mac anyway since my husband seems to take over my ibook every time I walk out of the room. And I am tempted by the promotion that ends today, to get a free ipod, since my 30GB video ipod is also out of space (I would upgrade to the 80GB video ipod and just pay the difference).
What I am wondering, for those of you who've had an ibook and a macbook, do you like the macbook as well, or better? Or does it have problems the ibook did not? I guess I'm a little nervous because I've read a lot of posts about macbook problems, especially related to vibrating or the fan running, and I'm just wondering if the macbook is as reliable and user-friendly as the ibook. I love my ibook because it is so quiet, doesn't usually get too hot if used for general word-processing and internet surfing, and I've never had any unreliability issues. It may be a moot point, since I can't buy a new ibook anyway, but I just need to hear some positive stories about the macbook, especially from those of you who've also had ibooks. Thanks!

I have a 12" ibook and a 1st generation Core Duo Macbook. I bought the Macbook because my partner needed a notebook and was happy to get my iBook. In hindsight I think I should have bought the Macbook Pro, despite the extra expense, as this would probably have been a better upgrade from the iBook. However, the current version of the Macbook is a far better spec'd computer...faster, more hard drive space, more Ram, and I think that the problems that some early Macbooks were prone too have been ironed out. Mine had the random shutdown problem, but Apple fixed that under warranty and it has been very reliable since.
Plus points of the Macbook for me are:
-I like the glossy screen of the macbook, definitely superior to the iBook for photos.
-The keyboard took a few hours to get used to but I think I type faster on it now.
-The iSight camera is a huge benefit if you do any videochat (Skype, iChat), it is so nice to have such a good onboard camera.
-It is much faster for iMovie...no crashes or video drop outs. Could be that the extra Ram helps here.
    - my iBook has Panther so obviously having Tiger is an improvement.
    - Magnetic power supply is nice
-came with bluetooth and wireless as standard...I love using it for wireless internet in hotspots.
    Negative points would be:
_ A BIG one for me is that the optical drive on the Macbook is far less reliable and stable than the ibook. It rejects a lot of my cd's that the iBook takes no problem, scratches cd's, cd's get stuck frequently. I often have to load a cd onto the ibook, then copy the file to my Macbook, and I am forever having to try to eject stuck cd's. Some brands of blank cd's/dvd's won't work at all.
-Heat...there is no doubt, the Macbook gets very hot compared to the iBook. It is uncomfortable if you use it on your lap, and I do wonder whether eventually sone internal componant will just melt one day and kill the Macbook, but so far that hasn't happened so maybe I am worrying for nothing.
    - I don't think the general build quality is as good, it just doesn't feel as solid. I treat mine very carefully. However, I have a friend who takes his everywhere in a rucksack and has not suffered any ill effects.
As I said, if I was buying again I definitely would have opted for the Macbook Pro as this would have been a really nice jump up, but the Macbook is amazing value and if you need another computer you will enjoy owning it.
Have you thought about a new iMac...do you need a notebook because if you don't the iMac would be a good choice too? Much bigger hard drive, better graphics card, bigger screen.
Enjoy what ever you end up with.

  • Airport Extreme good for MacBooks, bad for iBooks

I run a school with several Airport Extremes. The MacBooks connect fine to the wireless network, the iBooks are disconnecting all the time.
    The AE log shows:
    Jan 12 09:00:04 Severity:5 Associated with station 00:23:12:7f:17:63
Jan 12 09:00:05 Severity:5 Installed unicast CCMP key for supplicant 00:23:12:7f:17:63
    Jan 12 09:00:48 Severity:5 Disassociated with station 00:23:12:7f:17:63
This happens all the time for all of the (20) iBooks. I just showed 1 example here.
On this particular computer I was setting up management with WorkGroup Manager. After restarting I do not get the list of users, as the iBook tells me that Network Accounts are unavailable. If I log in with a local account and log off I do get the network accounts.
Even if the students log in with a local account they experience difficulties saving to a network share.

Personally, I turned off the AT&T gateway wifi, because it wasn't very stable for me.  I also do a lot of home networking between devices, i.e. iPad to PC, iPhone to PC, (Remote desktop...I'm lazy), laptop.  And stream from my PC to my ATV, wireless printer...etc.  The AT&T gateware is a Wireless G (54 Mbps), at least mine is, and the AE is n (300 Mbps) and Extreme-ly (pun-intended) stable.  I have never had to reboot it to get my wireless working, which was a frequent frustration of my Uverse gateway and other wireless routers.
In short, the main benefit I have found is stability and communcaiton between devices on my internal home network.  Your Intenet connection is based on what you subsribe and pay for with AT&T, which sounds like 3 Mbps and this will not change unless you incraese your Intenet package with Uverse.
I also like the AE for the ability to enable an isolated guest network when I have family over.  There is a free iPhone app that you can download that was created by Apple to configure your AE from your phone.  I use the guest network with a separate password to hand out to guests versus giving them my main wireless SSID and password.  The guest network can also be configured to not allow guests to see or connect to any other devices on your intenrnal network, which is more secure.

  • My HP8000 ptr will not print via time capsule showing problem as "...short read".  I've reset the printing sys on both MacBooks and the iBOOK?  Can you help?

I have been using a HP8000 printer via the USB connection on a TimeCapsule using wifi from a MacBook, MacBookPro and an iMAC (ethernet connected to Time Capsule) for a couple years before the printing stopped with a message of ".....short read" The printer still functions when directly connected to a Mac via a USB cable. Help???

Suggest that you work your way through Apple's Printer Troubleshooting Guide to see if you can get things going again.
The last item....reset printing system....will often work when all else fails, but try the other steps first.

  • Can I make an iBook hard drive into an external drive for a MacBook?

    Hi,
After 5 years my beloved G3 iBook has died. The diagnosis is a failed logic board. I am purchasing a MacBook, assuming the iBook drive is still OK; can I extract it from the iBook and build it into a suitable case so it becomes an external drive for my new computer? Will I have worry about any software clashes between the two drives.
As always your advice will be treasured,
    Thanks
    Dick Tanner
iBook, dual USB, 14.1in, 800Mh   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Now dead, failed logic board.

...can I extract it from the iBook and build it into a suitable case so it becomes an external drive for my new computer?
    Yes you can do that.
Will I have worry about any software clashes between the two drives.
No, it will just be an external drive like any other.

  • MacBook to iBook - Networking ethernet/firewire/IP/Sharing

MacBook to iBook - Networking ethernet/firewire/IP/Sharing - This is the problem:
    1. Firewire : I setup with firewire a MacBook to iBook IP network hub to use my MacBook over the iBook the net. Works 4 times without a problem, easy to set up, great ! Now it won't - green network status symbol in Sys>Network on booth computer. Firewire port selected on the top, as been advice already
( http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2003/11/11/panther_internet.html )... IP Address is activ, but now it won't go on the net over my iBook with the DSL modem. Can't use the modem on my MacBook(SpeedTouch 330) Thats why ! But what is the problem now with the firewire connection ?
    2. Ethernet : Same problem as with firewire and i have this: Conect to server - "Registered User" - ask me for Password ? No Password is setup on booth computer, but it refuse to conect : "Conection Failed" Unknown user, incorrect password ! Strange stuff...
Any help or advise would be great
Many thanks for help in advance !

To connect to another computer on your home network as a registered user, you need to enter the administrator's name and password for the computer you are trying access.

  • IBook connects to 'net, but MacBook won't

I have an iBook G4 (wife's Mac) and a newer Macbook. Both connect to the 'net via a wireless router (D-link DIR-615). This morning, for no apparent reason, I suddenly was unable to connect to the web on my Macbook. The iBook connects with no problem. I tried restarting the Mac, the cable modem and the router, but that didn't work.
When I run diagnostics, it gives me a 'green light' for Airport, Aiport Settings, and Network Settings, but says the ISP failed. When I plug into the ethernet port from the router, it still doesn't work! The only way I can connect is if I unplug the router altogether and plug in the ethernet directly from the modem to the Macbook. Any tips??

No responses yet, so I'm just adding this info in case it helps someone figure out what my issue might be.
I brought my Mac to work and was able to connect to the wireless network w/ no problem. I'll take it home tonight to see if that someone resolved this mysterious issue, but I'm not counting on it...

  • Migration assistant not working with iBook - macBook

I have used migration assistant many, many times before. I just purchased a MacBook and my iBook is having trouble in firewire mode. It seems that the iBook will boot up in firewire mode, the migration will begin, but after 5 minutes the iBook freezes, and the dancing firewire icon stops moving. This is VERY frustrating as one might imagine. Any suggestions? I have shocked the pram on the iBook, I have restarted the process 10 times now. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Did you reset PRAM on macbook as well?
Also try to repair disk and repair permission on iBook.
    Good Luck.

  • Ibook or macbook

which is the better laptop; an ibook g4, a macbook , or the macbook pro?
    ibook g3   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Better in terms of what?
iBook G3 which you have in your profile can boot into 9, thus supports Mac OS 9 drivers fully, which neither the iBook G4, nor the MacBook, nor the MacBook Pro have. It also does not have this limitation in the size and thickness of the media the others support internally:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
Of course an external burner nullifies that advantage.
The iBook G4 and faster notebooks have certain models with USB 2.
The iBook G4 has partial application and driver support for Mac OS 9 in its Classic environment, supports older versions of Photoshop, and other G4 optimized applications. It supports 802.11g wireless which is up to 30 Mbps. The iBook G3, will connect to 802.11g wireless, but never reach that speed.
Both the iBook G3 and G4 have an internal 56k modem. This may be seen as an advantage to some, but unfortunately with internal modems, you can't shut them off to reset them short of restarting the computer. An external modem will reset upon removing from the computer and shutting itself off.
The MacBook and MacBook Pro do not have any Mac OS 9 support whatsoever (unless you use a hack called Sheepshaver). It also unless you upgrade the RAM, may perform slower on GPU intensive games than the iBook G4. Games however which are Universal will get an extra boost by being able to use the Intel processor, which they won't under the iBook G4. On the other hand if an application hasn't been optimized for Intel, it may run faster on a G4 than a MacBook or MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has a better GPU that doesn't get hindered, and can be upgraded to 3 GB of RAM, whereas the MacBook only can be upgraded to 2 GB of RAM.
The MacBook has higher resolution settings possible than the iBooks for more screen real estate, and the video is widescreen on both it and the MacBook Pro which has the highest resolution.
Both the MacBook and MacBook Pro have these features which are an advantage over the iBooks:
    1. Extended desktop support to DVI displays (and not just mirroring)
    2. 5.1 audio via minijack to toslink adapters to speakers like the Logitech Z-680.
    3. In Core2 Duo models - the ability to be upgraded (if not included) 802.11n wireless networking which is over 3 times faster than 802.11g.
    4. Full support of Windows Virtualization and Boot Camp solutions to run Windows at native speeds.
    5. A built-in webcam
    6. In Core2 Duo models - full 64 bit support for applications which demand high end processing.
    7. Gigabit ethernet (for high speed wired local area networks)
    8. Faster SATA internal hard drives.
The MacBook Pro has these added advantages:
    1. Base model has a bigger hard drive.
    2. Express/34 slot to connect to faster drives and peripherals. SATA/II adapters allow you to hook up the fastest drives seen on a laptop, as well as certain wireless network solutions such as the EVDO network.
    3. Firewire 800 ports on certain models for faster external hard drives without an adapter in the Express/34 slot.
    4. A better GPU for high end games.
