Macbook to older tv

Hi,
Im sorry if this has been asked, but ive had a search and cant seem to find a post.
I have an older tv that id like to be able to connect my macbook to so i cant watch my itunes and stuff on.
The only ports my tv has are scart and the composite (red, yellow & white)
can anyone help me out with what i need?
Thanks

elw-com
I've been doing a bit of research about this but I'm not an expert (obviously).
Your mac should have an S-video out port. You can get an adapter for this to a yellow RCA jack (my powerbook came with one) Then all you have to do is connect that to the yellow socket on your TV with that type of cable. This will give you video only, not sound. To get sound you need to get a cable with stereo mini jack that fits into the earphone socket of your mac on one end and 2 RCA (red and white) jacks on the other end for your TV. That should just about do it but there are probably other options too.
You have to bear in mind that you may have to alter the display settings in system preferences to get it to work on your tv.
hope this helps a bit

  • Attaching MacBook to older TV

I attached my MacBook to my older Panasonic TV and could only get a Black and White picture. I have the MiniDVI to Video adapter, an S Video cable going from that to a SCART adapter which is plugged in the TV. I live in Ireland, thus the SCART.
Why do I only get black and white? How do I get a full color image? How do I get better quality?
Would using a Mini DVI to SVGA adapter work? and then find a SVGA to SCART adapter?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I did that. I played around with that System Preferences menu and still got no change. I went to another TV and tried it--a newer one, albeit still a tube TV--and it worked no problem. It's the TV. Just have to save my pennies and buy a new one soon. This one was free, so I can't complain. Oh well.
Thank you so much for the responses!

  • Macbook to Older TV Display - Cable Clarification

So, can someone just clarify for me:
In order to run my 13" Macbook to an older TV (CRT), I need the Mini-DVI to Video Adapter, and then a split audio cable also?
Does the adapter come with the three different coloured cables (red/white/yellow) to plug into the TV?
Sorry for ignorance, just wanted a simple answer without sifting through millions of varying opinions...
Thanks to anyone who can help!

I'll take a shot at it. In all cases, it will be necessary to run a separate audio feed with a MacBook that supports mini-DVI. The reason, DVI does NOT carry an audio signal by definition.)
In the case of an older CRT TV, you will probably need the mini-> to Video Adaptor (which offers a choice of video (s-video or composite.)
The other 2 choices are mini->DVI or mini->VGA.
All these items cost $19 at the Apple store. I think I got mine for a dollar or two cheaper at a Mac store.

  • Macbook to older style TV

    Hi,
I have a Macbook and would like to output Front Row and video from the Macbook to an older style TV which has those yellow, red and white round input sockets (the type you can plug a camcorder into). To get the video to the TV I assume I need a mini DVI to video adapter and then I run a video cable from the adapter to the yellow socket on the TV. Can you confirm? I got a bit confused as the info on the Apple Store site about the mini-DVI to video adaptor did not seem to mention the Macbook. Thanks.

You don't seem confused at all. You got it exactly right. You'll also want a sound cable for the red and white sockets. It should have a headphone style jack at the other end so it can plug into the MacBook's headphone output.

  • Replacing Display housing for  Early 2008 Macbook pro. older housing ok?

Hi guys! i have the newest Penryn Early 2008 Macbook pro 2.6 and have had an accident with the aluminum of the display housing. I am currently trying to find a compatible case to replace it with. I cant seem to find spare display housing that are made particularly for the new macbook pros for some reason =(
I've heard that there are different moulds of the Display housing since there are 3 different manufacturer for the LCD screen? (LG, SAMSUNG,CHIMEI)
Would the display casings of the older Intel Macbook pro work as long as I match the manufacturer? (e.g. if i have the display casing from a samsung early 2008 macbook pro, would this be compatible with the 2006 or 2007 samsung display housing?)
i have found a case for an older samsung http://www.welovemacs.com/9227221.html and chimei here
    http://www.welovemacs.com/9227351.html
Please help me out if you have any idea! thanks in advance =)

There is a service that I have yet to try but it looks pretty reliable and they service macs in virtually every way possible. Go to macservice.com and just follow the steps and choose what you want to repair. For MacBook pro you an get the display housing replaced for about $200, I know that is a bit steep but it's the easiest way to get it repaired. If you do use it let me know how you liked it.

  • Macbook or older laptop.....

This may seem like a no brainer, but consider my dilemna....
    I need a laptop to:
    a) take with me on the road and while Im traveling
    b) serve as a mobile extension of my studio, when artists cant make it to mine
    c) eventually serve as a dedicated show computer running Serrato or final scratch
I primarily run Logic Express and find myself using reason, live, etc less and less, but still might need one of those programs while im mobile
Should I buy a new macbook and pay the crossgrade fee for logic, as well as restrict myself to universal apps, and roll the dice on their first version of it?
Or should I just try to find an older powerbook or even ibook, pay way less for it, run all of my software with no hassle, but risk not having applecare for it
Option C is not as immediatley important
I would also want to be able to seamlessly transfer files between my dektop at my studio and my laptop.....this is paramount
I dont care about burning dvd's or games, graphics, and running windows....
All I care about is making music easily, moving songs back and forth between both computers, and using itunes, iweb (to keep my site updated) and logic while on the road
Again, I may have to use live or reason once and awhile
destop with laptop   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   I want to have a mobile extension of my desktop

    Welcome to apple forum,
From the way you describe it, look like you are a professional on that field.
So I suggest go with MacBook, it will have longer life span and more and more software are going universal (i know some are free upgrade and some aren't), but you'll getting back what you paid for with more productivity and more compatibility with newer plug-ins years to come.
And since Logic is also from apple, I believe they designed it with apple user in mind and it is not the first Logic, just a newer version that can runs universal. If it was the first logic like logic 1.0, then you might consider to wait, but it was there a quite some time.
And I think MacBook is the cheapest solution up to date compare to MAcBookPro.
    Good Luck.

  • Failed Erase and Install of OS X Tiger on a 15" MacBook Pro (older model)

    Hello,
I just recently attempted to erase and install Tiger on my MacBook Pro using the two installation CDs that came with my computer when I originally purchased it (August 2006). The error I am having trouble with is that about three quarters of the way through the installation using disc 2, the installation stops and says that it was unsuccesful due to errors that occured in the installation process. The installer suggest that I attempt the installation again and asks for disc 2, at which point the process starts again and I recieve the exact same error message.
I tried to solve the problem myself by looking at the support pages, but nothing specifically addressed my problem. The support site said that sometimes a lack of RAM can be to blame but clearly my computer's 2 GB is more than the reccomended 512 MB or 256 MB or whatever it said it was.
I suppose the culprit is either the install disc or my hard drive. All I really need is to know how to get out of the installing process and try and install off of a different OS X Tiger DVD disc that I have in addition to the two CDs that came with the computer. This obviously will tell me if my computer or the disc is at fault. I hope it's the disc.
Thank you very much for your help,
    -Travis

I suspect that there may errors in the directory that is causing your difficulties. I suggest that you start over.
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select the sub-volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
(Note: There is some question about the usefulness of zeroing the HDD, but because of the difficulties you are having I think it is advisable)
Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Problems with wireless connection between new macbook and older imac

I have just bought a 2.0 ghz macbook core2duo and am unable to connect to my wireless internet network at home. My wireless connection is set up through the airport card in my 17" flat panel imac (i.e. I am using the imac as the internet base station). I had an old clam shell macbook (which just died hence the new macbook) and still have a 400 mhz graphite SE iMac which both connec(ed) to the network perfectly for years. But the new macbook will not connect. It will connect when connected via ethernet. The imac uses Tiger.
I have tried resetting the name of the network, using encryption and not using encryption, but nothing helps. The macbook appears to see the network (although no bars register in the airport connection icon) but I always get an error message when trying to connect.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I am not actually using a router as I am using the airport card (non express i believe) in my iMac to send the wireless signal. My modem is Motorola but not sure which model. I have Comcast cable internet service

  • My macbook 13' (older version) starts only to white screen with apple logo tried to rebooot by pressing shift at the opening but it didn't finish starting before stopping please help anybody please

is anbody there how does this work never done it before my macbook won't start past white screen with apple logo any ideas ?

Are you using a 10.6 Snow Leopard Install DVD? If yes, you can erase and install following these directions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3910
You'll know whether or not it is a hard drive issue when you get to step 8 under "Part One: Erasing the hard drive". If you do not see your hard drive in the list on the left side of the Disk Utility window then you know the Mac isn't seeing it—could be a loose cable, but more likely hard drive failure.
If you can see it on the left, click on it and look at the bottom of the Disk Utility window. If you see something like "S.M.A.R.T status: failing" that is definitely a hard drive issue. Otherwise, you can just follow the directions for an erase and install!
Might be worth fixing depending how much a repair would cost. Genius Bar could at least diagnose it for you and give a repair estimate. I'd look at what a new or refurbished one with your same specs would cost though to see if the price differential is worth it...

  • I'm using a Macbook Pro older system

I can't open Facebook anymore on Safari, i can open everything else though!
    Any advice?

If this is not your own network you're using but that of a school or business, then try the accessing that site from another network — such as a café or library — as the network managers of more than a few private-use networks have designated access to that and to other similar sites to be inappropriate, and have blocked it.

  • Smell in Macbook Pro, older models

i'm in the market for a 15" Laptop.
I've read some reviews about the "smell" that is emitted by the 2007 models.. Does anyone know if this problem was experienced with the models released right before the newest ones in late 2008?? (I'm guessing this would be the early 2008 models).
Any answers appreciated, need to make my decision early tomorrow.

  • 802.11n card in an older MacBook Pro

I have looked around & it seems you can buy an Airport Extreme 802.11n card from the Fastmac online store. I watched the instructional video on Macworld of the guy installing it & it seems pretty easy & the performance improved greatly in his laptop. Before I follow through with this, I just wanted to check & see if anyone else has done this self-installed upgrade & how it worked out for them. I want to call Apple to see if they will do it for me, but I don't believe they will. My laptop is still under warranty (ends in mid 2009) & I would hate to void that warranty, but if Apple wont give me an upgrade that was available a year after I bought my laptop, then I will have to do it myself. I love Apple, but sometimes they just seem to zip by too fast & forget about their previous models & that customers still own them. So if anyone could shed some light on the matter, it would be really great. Thanks.

Well, I am not looking for a faster connection with file transfers within the house, what I am looking for is a solid, stable, consistent, connection. We just bought a new NetGear wireless router & the PC that is hard wired into it works fine, we were hoping that it would output a strong signal throughout the house for my laptop & the Wii & DS's. The Wii & the DS's work great, but for some reason my laptop can't keep the connection for more than 5 minutes at a time. It is VERY frustrating. I have read in several forums, where people have had the same problem, the MacBook Pro (older model) just can't hold onto a connection for more than a few minutes. I was in the same room as the router & my airport bars would go from 4, to 2, to 1 & then no signal & would have to search for an access point & then connect to it, only to have go through that same mess all over again. This is why I wanted to switch to a "n" card instead of "g". So that I would have a more stable connection. The router says that the "g" connection is supported up to a few hundred feet away from the router... I'm lucky if I keep a connection when I am sitting on a chair with the router underneath me.

  • Help!  My Macbook is running slow and glitchy lately

My macbook has been burning through my battery when I am running only one or two programs and even when the lid is closed and it is supposed to be on stand by.  My programs have been glitchy lately also.  Sometimes they run okay and at other times they are extremely slow and resource heavy though I don't know why.  I know that my macbook is older but thus far it has been a great computer and I would really like to squeeze a couple more years out of it.  Can you please give me some advice to help my computer run better with Yosemite?  I have included my computer stats and a EtreCheck for those who know what to look for on my computer.  Thanks for the help in advance.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

You might have better luck posting on the Mabook Pro discussion forum, as this is the OS X Xserve server forum.
Have you tried booting it from a DVD? If so and you find the same result, then its probably a hardware issue.

  • Macbook works fine when plugged in, turns off when unplugged.

    Hello all,
As stated my 2008 Unibody 13 inch, serial number W8******1AX turns on and works fine when it is connected to power.
When it is unplugged it instantly turns off and turns its fans on full until it depletes the battery (so it is obviously getting power.. just not where I want it)
Since the problem began I have tried two new batteries, neither of which had any different symptoms.
Before this, the computer had an intermittent life, it would turn off when it saw fit, which got progressively worse.
I have followed the guides to resetting the SMC but have had no luck
I have been running it without the battery (to save it charging and discharging for no reason) and sometimes when plugged in without a battery
the magsafe green indicator light goes from dim to bright.
With the battery installed it stays bright orange until it is charged and then switches to bright green.
(I have tried it with another charger, same symptoms)

    Many thanks!!

There may be a hardware cause behind the symptoms you cite, so a diagnostic
is recommended to see which parts are weak or failed in the computer. A visit to
an Apple Store with Genius bar may be helpful, as they can perform testing there.
A call ahead or use their web page, to schedule an appointment, is advised.
In the US and Canada, the Genius bar at a retail Apple Store can perform
a diagnostic service, for no fee, even on Apple products without AppleCare.
    See links:

Genius Bar - Apple Retail Store:

List of Apple Stores, cities, countries:
    http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/
Also authorized Apple service providers who can test, repair and guarantee their
work should be able to handle an out-of-warranty older Mac, within age limits...
Ones too old for the Apple Store could be serviced at a Specialist, instead.

•The power adapter can be problematic and cause issues, so there's this:

Also another item, other than keeping the magnetic connections clean of
debris, grime, and corrosion, is to check the MagSafe Board or have it
checked as part of a greater diagnostic. This board is behind the port
that supplies the computer and the battery with power from the adapter.
When it partially fails or if/when one of the connecting wires or plug fails
you can find odd issues or partial use. The battery may charge but it
may not be able to power the computer, and other odd effects.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook
In older portable Macs, this was generally called a 'DC-in board' and as
such, you could read about it in an iFixit repair guide for the MacBook
model you have. These vary so the matching article is recommended to
see if that is something you may want to try. But I would have diagnostic
testing done and avoid additional damages from attempted DIY efforts.
There have been a few reports of other failure on the logic board that
contributes to a partial failure of the charging system, so about all this
may do is troubleshoot around the failure without finding an exact cause.
    However it goes...
    Good luck & happy computing!
