Macbook to RGB (analog) port

I have a Westinghouse LCD television that I want to connect to my Macbook. What cable accessories do I need?
The RGB (which I think is the same as VGA, right?) port on the Westinghouse is a female port, so I need a male VGA input. There is no HDMI port on the Westinghouse. Can anyone recommend the proper cable or combination of cables - ones that actually have some length to them as well?
I bought a miniDV to DVI cable, assuming, since I use that for my Cinema Display at work that the same was needed for the Westinghouse TV, but now I am not sure. Is VGA DVI-D? Is the miniDV to DVI, DVI-I? Are those two compatible? I am confused about what I need to make this work.
Thanks for the help.
Chris

Sounds like you'll need Apple's Mini DVI to VGA Adapter. You'll also need a standard VGA cable. Your Westinghouse may have come with one.
As for whether the Westinghouse works with computers or not, the fact that it has a VGA port is a good sign. But check the user guide that came with the Westinghouse to find out for sure if it works with "PCs".

I am trying to screen share between my iMac and an LG television which has USB, HDMI, and RGB IN ports; is there a cable which will enable me to do this ?

Depending on what you mean by "sharing" you also may be a good candidate for an AppleTV. Connecting content stored on your Mac is pretty easy with one, you can display photo's, movies & music  through it. In addition you can use your LG as a simple external display using Airplay assuming your iMac has Airplay capabilities. If any of that interests you then look at Apple's web site on AppleTV, you can buy them refurbished from Apple's online store for $75.00.

  • Transfer of mini-DV tapes from Panasonic NV-GS120 to MacBook Pro via FireWire port (9-pin)

I am new to Mac and love it. I would like to transfer my old mini-DV tapes from Panasonic NV-GS120 to my MacBook Pro via FireWire port (9-pin), but am not sure which port to use on the video camera. Reading from the top on the Panasonic video camera there are three options: a "mini-usb" port, a "remote/mic (plug in power)" [not likely] and finally a "A/V out phones" jack entry [which I use for viewing the tapes on the TV screen via the jack cable ending up in a red, yellow and white cable to plug into TV.
I have read Bengt Wärleby's excellent instructions and am ready to buy the FireWire cable (9-pin in one end - Mac), but I am not sure if it is the mini-usb or jack-stick exit of the video camera. Or, indeed, if there is talk about an external A/V box needed to decode and transfer the digital tapes to iMovie on the Mac.
Any clarification is highly appreciated. Thanks for all suggestions.

The port you're looking for is the DV Port (in your manual it's marked as control component #55). I looked up your camera and it does have it. That's the port where the firewire should fit. Hope to have helped you.

  • Macbook Pro 15" USB PORT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE ANY DEVICE.

I got my macbook pro 15" for about 1 year and 2 weeks ago, when I turned on my macbook and put my mouse ( Death Adder) into the USB PORT, my macbook DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. There are 2 usb ports on my macbook, I tried both port and there was only one port work correctly, the other one didn't work at all, I also tried to put my memory stick, external hard drive, vodafone 3g usb, ipod,....into that USB PORT but non of them worked. Is there any one here have the same problem???? Can you guy help me please. I stay quite far away from Apple Store so it is hard to bring it to repair. I tried to reset SMC, Update Software,...but still not work...HELP ME PLEASE...

I can't fault your troubleshooting. Sounds like a bad port.
Home remedies are limited. You can grab a magnifier and shine a flashlight in there. If you see any foreign material, use a toothpick or other non-conductive tool to extract it. If you can, give it a good blast of (dry, canned) compressed air to blow any particles loose.
Sometimes you can trick a flaky USB port into working at least intermittently by plugging in an extension cable or right-angle connector. Play with a device that lights up so it's easy to see whether it's working.
Take a hard look inside the connectors at the end of your Death Adder and other frequently-used devices. If you see any corrosion or bent pins, that's what damaged your USB port.
If the port requires physical repair, it's best to use Apple or an authorized dealer because if they make things worse while trying to fix it, they have to make it right. Joe's Appliance isn't similarly accountable.
If you need more USB ports, ExpressCard to USB adapters are dirt cheap.
    Good luck.

  • Can i get an adapter for macbook to make hdmi port?

can i get an adapter for macbook to make hdmi port?

Yes, but the one you need depends on the specific MacBook you have.
Earlier MacBooks use a Mini-DVI and later ones use a Mini DisplayPort for their video output. To find out which MacBook you have, go to the  (Apple menu) and choose About This Mac. Click More Info... and in the System Profiler window that opens, choose Hardware. Your Model Identifier will be shown.
For MacBook1,1 though MacBook4,1 choose a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter
For MacBook5,1 and later choose a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter
Either one is commonly available for less than $10.

Im connectioning my macbook to my hdmi port in tv.  I am getting no sound through the tv only the macbook speakers.  anyone know how to get my tv to read sound?

The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. But check your TV manual to see if it has audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

The Mini-DVI port doen't carry audio at all. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports.
To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

  • 2010 Macbook Pro to Analog TV

Simple Question: Is this possible? I am planning on buying a new macbook pro, but I only have an analog tv(no hdmi, vga, dvi etc). I would like to be able to connect my macbook to the tv via Svideo or Composite cables. I understand that the new laptops aren't as compatible with this as they used to be, but I have gotten no definitive answer about if it can work or not. If it is possible, what are my options?

I have not tried it.. but you should be able to get the VGA adapter, then find an external converter box that changes VGA to to svideo or composite. Do not try to use DVI for that...

To my knowledge there is no adapter that connects to the mini-displayport from a 3rd party vendor.
there are many 3rd party adapters that connect to mini-DP... much cheaper than Apples... and its the only way to get a HDMI one.

I have a brand new Macbook Pro and I have a DVI to good ol' RCA so I bought an adapter for Mini Display Port to DVI but they don't work. Is this not going to work at all? Or is there something else I can do?
because the Mini-DP to DVI cable is full digital.. its DVI-D. your RCA adapter is analog it needs DVI-I. if your RCA adapter also has a VGA port, you can get the mini-DP to VGA plug and it will be analog. If it only has a DVI-I port, you can try a DVI-I to VGA adapter on it and still use the VGA adapter... but that doesn't work right on some adapter boxes.

  • Macbook Pro need to port audio out from Firewire or Thunderbolt

I need an additional audio out port (in addition to the headphone jack).
This needs to be analog (going to my sound system / RCA) and it appears I need adaptors that will use the Thunderbolt connector, but something that uses Firewire would be ok too.
My Macbook Pro is 2011 era running 10.6.8

Something like this Digital Audio To Analog Audio Converter ... from Amazon will do the trick.

  • Connecting Cinema Display with mini display port to macbook pro with thunderbolt port

I am trying to connect a 27" cinema display (2010) that has a mini display port cable out of the back, into my macbook pro (2013) with thunderbolt ports.  The mini display port cord fits into the thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro, however the macbook pro does not detect the cinema display and the cinema display does not have any picture on the screen.  The USB plugs in fine and sound comes out, and I have the adapter for the magsafe to magsafe 2 and that works fine, it just the actual display.  Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hello mmholt,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there’s no video on an Apple Cinema Display that’s connected to your MacBook Pro, and you’re wondering if the configuration is supported. It is supported, take a look at the article linked below for more information.
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    1. Can I connect a Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt port on my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?
Yes. A Mini DisplayPort display or a display connecting with a Mini DisplayPort to VGA, DVI, or HDMI adapter will work just like it was connecting to a Mini DisplayPort connector when plugging in directly to the Thunderbolt connector on your Apple computer. Click here for more information on Mini DisplayPort connections and adapters.
Also, this article provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting tips that will resolve most issues related to video external displays.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro 17" Thunderbolt port "No Device Connected"

    Please help!
    I have a 2011 (early) 17" Macbook Pro (8,3)
    Core i7 - 2.2
    Boot Rom: MBP81.0047.B27
    SMC: 1.70f6
    Running Yosemite 10.10
I recently purchased a Akitio Thunderdock.
***It does not mount and when I check the system report, the thunderbolt bus shows "No Device Connected."
I reset the PRAM numerous times.
    Reset the SMC.
Everything is plugged in correctly, with a proper thunderbolt cable.
When I attach the thunderbolt cable to the MBP, the blue LED on the on the dock lights up. (meaning link connected)
But the thunder dock will not mount.
    Thunderbolt specs:
    Route String: 0
    Link Status: 0x101
    Firmware Version: 20080d.0
    Status: No device connected
    Port Micro Firmware Version: 1.2.1
Before I got the dock I used (and still do) use the thunderbolt port with a mini display adapter to connect a 2nd display.
    (works fine for this function.)
    Thank you for your help.
    J.
***Before suggesting it's the dock/power/bad cable:
I tested the Thunderdock with my GF's Macbook Air (2013) it mounts fine and sees every port on the dock (USB3, eSATA, FW800).

    Same here.
Did anyone try to downgrade to Mavericks?

  • How to record a landline phone-to-phone conversation using a MacBook's audio-in port?

I need to record a phone conversation -- that will take place between two landlines.
(I have the other person's permission -- I'm interviewing them for a paper and we both want a permanent audio recording of the conversation so that the quotes can be later double-checked for accuracy. So, the legality question is not the issue.)
I could do it the old-old-old-fashioned analogue way of getting one of those 1960's-style microphone pickups that have a suction cup to put on the phone...but the audio quality of that is probably pretty low.
I'd much prefer doing it directly digitally by having the phone's audio signal go into my MacBook Pro's "audio in" port and then recording the whole thing with an application on my Mac.
I've solved various peripheral aspects of the problem already: I have a choice of at least three different applications that can make recordings of the internal audio signal on the Mac (among those applications are Amadeus and QuickTime Player 7). And I have a "portable handset" connected to the landline, and the handset has a small audio-out/in jack into which a headphone headset can be plugged. And I have a converter plug which converts a "larger" (I thinks it's 3.5mm) computer-style audio jack into a "smaller" (I think it's 2.5mm) phone-style audio jack.
My questions are: Can I just use any available random 3.5mm-to-3.5mm male-to-male audio cable (such as those that connect tabletop computer-speakers), place the converter plug on one end and insert it into the phone, and then plug the other end into the MacBook Pro's "audio-in" port?
What would happen if I tried that?
Or do I need some kind of specialty cables, or specialty plug-converters?
My MacBook Pro is from about 5 years ago and has one of those "audio-in" (also sometimes referred to as "audio line-in") ports that depict above them a symbol that looks like a circle with two triangles overlapping it (clear image of what the port's symbol looks like here: http://www.kozco.com/tech/audacity/pix/MacLineIn.jpg).
Or do I have the wrong hardware/port to achieve this? If so: What steps can I take to make a digital recording of a landline phone call successfully?
Presumably, even if this scenario I sketch out above is feasible, since the audio out-signal from the phone is being redirected to the phone's out-port, I will not be able to hear the person on the other end from the phone's ear-piece itself; instead, I'd have to speak into the phone's mouthpiece but to hear the other person I must turn on the computer's volume and listen to the audio coming out of the Mac's built-in speakers. A little awkward, but doable.
Or am I barking completely up the wrong tree? If so -- what is the right tree? I'd like to do this without buying more hardware or specialty cables, if possible.

    Quick update, for those interested:
Surprisingly, I have gotten it to work using just a random cable and converter plug, despite the predictions that it simply could not work. Well, to be be precise, it sort of works -- I'll explain what happens:
Taking a random 3.5mm-3.5mm male-to-male audio cable from some old tabletop computer speakers, I plug one end into my MacBook Pro's "audio in" port; the other end of the cable I plug into my "3.5mm-to-2.5mm converter plug" that I mentioned in the original post. Then I stick that converted end into the 2.5mm audio-out jack on the side of my Panasonic portable handset (for a landline). Then I open System Preferences > Sound > Input and make sure "Audio Line-in port" is selected. Then I launch QuickTime Player 7 and open Preferences>Recording and make sure "Built-in Input: Line In" is selected. Then in QuickTime Player 7 I go to the menu bar and choose File> New Audio Recording. Then if I make or receive a call on the phone, and press the "Record" button in QuickTime Player 7 -- it records the conversation perfectly clearly!
    Well, sometimes it does.
The problem is that the converter plug tip that fits into the phone's audio jack needs to be fiddled with for the audio signal to be transmitted correctly. In fact, strangely, it DOES NOT WORK if the plug is plugged in all the way! For reasons I don't understand, it has to be sort of loosely and delicately half-plugged in for the connection to work correctly. What makes it difficult is that it's nearly impossible to keep the plug plugged in at this delicately balanced halfway level. The slightest motion will make it either go in further, or come out further, and either way, the audio signal is cut off, and I have to fiddle with it to get the connection back by making the plug get back to its perfectly balanced mid-way position.
However, when it is getting the signal, the sound is normal volume -- not dim or unamplified. That's the good news.
I think the problem lies with the exact nature of my converter plug.I notice that most other audio plugs, including both 2.5mm and 3.5mm, have three "bands" of metal on the shaft, separated by two lines (usually plainted blue or black). From my meager understanding of what this means, one of those bands is for incoming audio, the other is a "microphone" band for outgoing audio, and the last is the "ground." Yet the tip of the converter plug I'm using has only TWO "bands" of metal separated by a single black line. So I think it is lacking the "microphone" aspect, and the reason I have to have it plugged only partway in is so that the two bands are trying to match the connectors for the three bands deep in the jack hole.
I will try using it this way today, but for future attempts, next time I'm near an electronics store, I will try to find and buy a 3.5mm-to-2.5mm converter plug that has THREE bands, including the "microphone signal" band. Once I have that, I predict it will work perfectly!
If I ever get to that point, I will update this thread.
