Macbook to TV via DVI-HDMI cable - video delay

Hello All,
I have my Macbook, on occasion, attached to my Samsung LCD via Apple's mini DVI to DVI adapter, plugged into a DVI to HDMI cable, which is attached to my TV. The audio is routed from the headphone jack on the Macbook to the associated Audio input on the TV.
Problem I'm having, is that the video seems delayed to the TV, by a matter of milliseconds. I've verified this by putting the Macbook in mirror mode, and I can visually see the changes in picture on the Macbook a few milliseconds before the TV displays them. Since the audio is perfect and real time, I'm looking at video on the TV that's out of sync with the audio, albeit by a few milliseconds.
I don't think the picture problem can be solved - it's most likely just the nature of the technology, as the signal can pass much faster to the internal display than an external, and the TV in general might be causing the delay as well. I've tried video game mode, and setting the TV as the primary display, and it does not help.
So now, what I'm looking for, is an application that I can launch when I want to use this setup that will delay the audio out of the headphone jack. If I can delay the audio at the same rate as the picture, than I'm all set.
Does anyone know of a program that can do this? Ideally, I'd love to have this program run when FrontRow is enabled.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Good luck on finding a program that will delay the audio. Perhaps running the audio through an amp and then to your monitor would "slow" it down a trifle. Maybe the video "slows" down converting from DVI to HDMI?
Seems like a lot of trouble for a little gain.

  • Can I play my iMovie project on my hdtv via an HDMI cable and adapter?

Greetings. Wondering if I can play my iMovie project directly from my MacBook Pro to my hdtv via an hdmi cable with adapter for the MacBook? Thank you!

    Hi Paul,
The sound was coming out of the laptop and not out of the tv though
Connect an audio cable from your Mac's audio out socket to the TV's audio in socket. Adapter cables often need audio to be connected separately. I had a similar problem connecting the mini display port to DVI cable, then DVI to HDMI adapter from there.

  • Mac Mini on Toshiba Regza Z3030 42" via DVI- HDMI

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect a Core2Duo Mac Mini (running 10.4.11) to a 42" Toshiba Regza Z3030 Full-HD TV via a DVI-HDMI cable. The TV does 1920x1080 (both i and p), but when I select 1920x1080 (interlaced) from the display resolution menu in System Preferences, I get a black frame around the image that is twice as large on the right side of the picture than it is on the left or top/bottom sides (so even if I enable overscan, the picture is not acceptable, as it's missing a strip of the desktop on the left, top and bottom sides then).
I'm running the TV on "Exact Scan" mode, which (according to the manual), should display a 1080 signal exactly the way it is received from the source, no stretching or scaling at all.
Incidentally, the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning progress indicator fills the screen completely in 1080i, but as soon as the login panel comes up, the picture gets the black bars, so I think it's a MacOS X issue. Can I somehow tell the Mac not to switch the display settings after the booting process is finished, as the image during the boot process is perfect?
Any hints on what I could try?
    Thanks in advance,
    Georg

Ok, I decided to take some more time and googled for how SwitchResX actually works and what all the settings in the "custom resolution" view mean. I stumbled across a very useful tutorial in this forum thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=751713
Following these instructions (basically, I just had to play with the "front porch" and "back porch" parameters until the image was perfectly centered), I ended up with a custom resolution in which the image is centered, but still has black bars around it.
Next, I simply turned on "Overscan" in the Display preferences while setting the TV's HDMI port input to "Exact Scan", meaning it will display the image exactly the way it comes over the HDMI port, without extra scaling.
With this combination, I now ended up with a picture that fills the whole screen and has (according to a test image) a "1 to 1" pixel mapping. Also, for some reason, this new resolution that I made myself rather than taking the values off the internet "sticks" between sleep and wake cycles as well!
For some reason, though, the TV only reported that it supports 50Hz vertical sync in 1080p when I used the "Export DDC" function in SwitchResX, even though according to the manual it also does 60Hz (and the default 1920x1080, 60Hz resolution from the Display preferences works as well). Therefore, I was only able to make my custom resolution for 50Hz, as I need the values from the DDC export as a starting point.
I only want to use this Mac Mini/TV combination as a media center for movies and music streaming via iTunes, so I guess it won't make any difference wether I'm running it at 50Hz or 60Hz?
Anyways, I hope this thread might help other people with the same TV who are having similar problems with their Mac Minis.

  • Using a DVI HDMI cable with my Sharp Aquos LC-52D62U 1080p

    Hello
I have a Mac Mini Intel proc with 4GB RAM (max RAM).
I'm trying to get it to work with my Sharp Aquos LC-52D62U 52" TV. The TV supports 1080p native, and the mini has had no issues connecting to this TV before. I just re-installed 10.6 (with all updates) and it does not want to connect.
I have a direct DVI > HDMI cable going from the Mini directly to the back of the TV. I tested other devices on that TV input and the TV works fine. I'm also convinced that the cable is fine as it worked before the re-install of the system.
I can see the Mac Mini using screen sharing on my Mac Pro, so I can make changes to the configuration over the network. The screen settings on the Mini are set to "1080p (Television)" just like they were when it all worked fine. But the TV screen is black. No picture at all.
What can I do about this?
    Thanks,

Hello Mac Mini world. I tried to connect my new Mac Mini to a 2 year old 32" Insignia Flat Screen HDTV through HDMI for hours however there was always part of the screen cut off even after adjusting both the resolution ratio on TV and Mini. After 3 calls to Insignia TV and Apple Support nobody had a definitive solution for me and was mainly told to live with it! One person from Applecare did half heartedly suggest trying a VGA connection instead in spite of lower quality. I went to the MAC store and they were confused as were the people at Best Buy but I reluctantly bought the MINI VIDEO PORT CABLE + VGA CABLE at Best Buy and to my surprise IT WORKED AND LOOKS PERFECT and automatically adjusts to fit any setting of computer resolution LIKE MAGIC. I have never posted but this seemed like good info as I read through a lot of blogs yesterday trying to resolve this issue. AGAIN THE SOLUTION IS TO TRY THE VGA CONNECTION. -chuck

  • Using DVI - HDMI cable output to Samsung LCD TV

For some reason, i have been using the DVI -> VGA Adapter with a VGA cable outputted to my new Samsung LCD TV, with resolution 1920x1080. I purchased a DVI -> HDMI Cable, but the quality/resolution is subpar to using the VGA Cable, it seems as if the resolution is upscaling itself, but according to Display Preferences, it is outputting at 1920x1080i, When i'm using the VGA cable it just says 1920x1080, without i or p.
    Anyone know why?

I've been trying to communicate with a Samsung LE40A656 via a DVI-HDMI cable.
I think there must be issues with HDMI on that model because the TV can't detect a signal on the HDMI port and the MPB can't see a monitor.
But I have managed to get full screen via the Apple DVI-VGA adaptor and the D-sub port on the Samsung using the specification in this archive thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6400626&#6400626
Before I upgraded my TV I had a cheap(ish) Hyundai Vuon with a DVI port which worked fine with my MBP.
Would still like to know why HDMI doesn't work on the Samsung.

  • USB Dock 3.0 Audio through DVI-HDMI cable?

    Hey there!
I currently own the yoga 2 pro and I am looking for a suitable dock. One thing that prevented me from ordering the usb 3.0 dock was that I am not sure whether with a DVI to HDMI cable I am able to get audio from my laptop to a TV.
    For better understanding: Laptop -> USB 3.0 -> USB 3.0 Dock -> DVI -> HDMI -> TV
I asked my local retailer and they said it isn't possible but I am not sure whether they tested my method. They said I'll be needing a seperate audio jack cable -.- ugly... with my old 460 GTX I was able to transmit sound with the same DVI/HDMI cable
Can anyone who owns the USB 3.0 dock confirm that audio through DVI-HDMI cable to a TV is working / not working?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Greetings

DVI won't carry audio on the ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock.

  • ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro dvi hdmi cable

I am sending video signal over a 50FT HDMI To DVI from my Mac Pro (3,1) via ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro (5.0 GT/s) (181062917108) and I cannot get a constant signal to my TV. The signal stays on for a few seconds or several hours or my TV (Samsung) says there is no signal or I get just a gray static screen.
I never had a problem before with my previous video card the 512MB nVidia GeForce 8800GT with a 25ft long cable. Any ideas people?

A cable of about 5 meters (16 ft) can be manufactured to Category 1 specifications easily and inexpensively by using 28 AWG (0.081 mm²) conductors.[114] With better quality construction and materials, including 24 AWG (0.205 mm²) conductors, an HDMI cable can reach lengths of up to 15 meters (49 ft).[114]

You may need a higher-quality cable or a lower resolution for your display to make this work without an HDMI Repeater.

  • Connecting MacBook to Sony Bravia via DVI-HDMI!

Hi I am having major issues with my Macbook connecting to my Sony Bravia KDL-32V4000 I now have 2 different DVI-HDMI leads as well as the Apple Mini-DVI-DVI and still have absolutely no luck.
The Macbook is picking up the Television absolutely no bother at all but there is just nothing at all coming up on the Television its self it doesn't even recognise that I have the computer in the HDMI slot nothing at all just blank!
Any help would be greatly appreciated as it will save me buying more and more cables if this fails to work will have to go with the DVI-VGA I guess would rather fix this though!
    Thanks!

I bought a mini-DVI to HDMI and an HDMI to HDMI cable. Once I went into settings for the display, I found that the TV was acting as a second monitor and that it was off to the right of the macbooks own screen. Thus if i moved the mouse to the right it could control the second monitor. You are able to move the screens so that they have the same data on each or use them as two screen with different info on each. Each screen is clearly visible in Spaces and it works a treat.
It is also possible to use the TV as the only screen. The way to do this is to connect up and close the lid on the mac. Once the light on the front starts blinking you can wake it up by using your mighty mouse or external keyboard. once awake, assuming you have chosen the correct HDMI connection from the TV the TV will act as the only monitor at full resolution.
The problem I have, is that I have not been able to get the sound to work. I have used the earphone socket and connected that to external speakers as I cannot seem to get the analogue signal on the TV on anything but an AV channel (not an HDMI channel). Thus the sound works on one channel and the image on another. My TV is a Sony KDL40w5710 - thus if anyone know the solution to getting the sound running through an HDMI channel on my TV it would be appreciated if you could contribute.
    Cheers

  • Can a Macbook send audio via DVI port?

I want to hook up a Macbook to an HDTV by using a mini-DVI to DVI adapter, connected to a cable that has a DVI connection on one end and an HDMI cable on the other.
Does anyone know if the min-DVI port supports audio?
The more expensive cable supports audio, but I don't want to shell out the extra money if the Macbook can't support it.

DVI does not carry an audio signal. It takes HDMI to do that. You'll need to use a separate audio cable.

  • Twinview & those DVI- HDMI cable

    hi folks,
i have twinview going perfectly in arch and everything is dandy.  but i recently gave away the vga cable and got myself one of those DVI to HDMI cable and currently using it to connect the pc to the lcd tv that i have.  i can still get twinview going but, the problem is that i can only get a resolution of 1280x720 on the lcd tv, which is not the native resolution of 1360x768.  is there an option i can override or a workaround of some sort?  of will i just have to use those vga cable?

  • Apple 20" CD connects fine to MacBook Pro 2009 via DVI to Mini displayport (adapter) but not to Radeon 5770 (either MDP ports) on MacPro 2008?! Have Eizo CG223 on DVI to 5770. Any ideas?

    Here's the setup:
Eizo Coloredge CG223 DVI to DVI on MacPro 5770 interface (ACD works fine on this too, naturally).
Apple Cinema Display 20" have the DVI connector. I have a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter on this, into one of the 5770's MDPs, neither of which seem to work.
Plug the same ACD via DVI (with DVI to MDP adpater) into my MacBook Pro 2009 MDP and it works fine as a second screen.
So what's up with the 5770 MDPs? I've seen online that the card should at least support two displays, either MDPs x2 or MDP and DVI. I've seen there may be an issue with three, not two.
    Any ideas please?
    Thanks,

  • MacBook to TV via DVI strange for DVD full screen

The TV has the same resolution as the MacBook (1024x768).
The display works fine via DVI.
DVDs displayed inside a window are ok.
However, when playing a DVD full screen, after a few seconds the visible image part of the movie moves to the top of the TV screen (having a small part, the very top, not visible anymore on TV) - while the MacBook still shows correctly the movie (with the image centered vertically).
It seems this is caused by the way the DVD player "hides" the commands (in full screen) a few seconds after the user stops moving the mouse. It seems the commands are displayed "below" the visible part of the movie on the Mac - while the TV "tries" to display it anyway, thus moves the whole 1/3 to the top.
Since the TV shows the correct screen when not playing DVD full screen, it is likely to be a problem with the DVD player.
Is there a particular setting I should focus on?

Are you using your external screen in Mirrored Mode? If so, the TV resolution and the MacBook will have the same resolution (1280 x 800 max.). If you uncheck mirrored in Display Preferences, you'll be able to get your TV's maximum resolution. This would be called extended view. Or, you could use it in [Closed Clamshell Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3131].

  • Macbook Pro HDTV(via MDPort-HDMI) = No Internet. Why the helll...?

    Hello, I'm new here
I've just got myself a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable so I can run my Macbook Pro 13" display through my 32" HD TV. It all works fine and I can work everything on my TV either mirrored or as an extended desktop.
    BUT...
When the cable is plugged in, my internet decides to stop working. Like, before I plug my cable in, I'm on the internet fine... when I plug my cable in, any applications I have connected to the internet will disconnect, and webpages don't load. I use Safari, but I opened Firefox to see what it said on the bottom loading bar thing and it said 'looking up 'website.com' ", it would stay on this for a while, clear that it's not just being slow, but when I unplug the cable, the webpage loads up instantly.
Has anyone else had this problem or know what I could try to fix it? I've looked at all the things I can think of like opening Network Preferences and Display Preferences but I'm reletively new to Macbooks so I'm not sure what to try next.
Hope someone can be of help.

RIGHT.... to anyone else who reads this...
it worked perfectly (along with the internet) earlier for a few minutes, but then went off again as i started getting excited that it was working perfectly!
so it HAS worked. but now ISN'T working again. and i haven't changed anything. it just decided to work, then decided to stop again. it's just teasing me.
please someone help, it's driving me crazy, it makes no sense!!

  • Is there an iPod touch model which will work with a video projector via an HDMI cable?

I want to use an iPod touch to use an app called iSing Worship in our church. This app plays worship songs and enables the lyrics to be projected on a screen using a video projector. Is this possible and if so, which model iPod touch will I need to purchase?

    - If that app supports TV out,the app description will say, then you need a 4G or later iPod and the HDMI/Digital adopter cable. You can also use and Apple TV abd Airplay to the Apple TV
    - If the app does not suport TV out then you need a 5G iPod since the 5G will mirror the iPpd's screen, Yu then need
    - Via Airplay to an Apple TV.
    or this cable.
