MacBook to XP Networking

I have a MacBook and PC running Windows XP. Access to the network and internet is using a Verizon FIOS Actiontec router. I can see the MacBook from the PC but cannot see the PC from the MacBook. I have turned off all firewalls (Norton and even the Actiontec router) but am unable to connect to the PC from the Mac. I have shared PC folders and try and login using an account with password, but still no luck.
Any other ideas?

This is a very common problem, but there is not yet any one solution that seems to work for everyone,
Questions/suggestions:
1) Are you sharing the root drive of the PC? (C$ or D$)? Tiger used to display these shares - Leopard does not (the $ is meant to be a convention to hide the share on a PC - Leopard is respecting the Windows convention properly).
2) Try connecting via the "Go" menu, using smb://yourpcname.local/yoursharename.
3) Try connecting vis the "Go" menu, using smb://yourPCipaddress/yoursharename.
4) Did you upgrade from Tiger? If so - are you using the "Automatic" location? This causes lots of problems, because it does not remember the workgroup/domain for your PC network. Try creating a new location, then click on the "Advanced...." button, followed by the "WINS" tab. If you don't have any entry for the workgroup name, enter either WORKGROUP or the name of the domain that your PC uses.
5) Are you using "Simple File Sharing" on the PC? Is it running XP Home or Pro? (If Home you have to use Simple File Sharing, if not, you have more powerful choices).
That should do for starters,.,.. (there are few guarantees, unless you are able to use static IP addresses, and are ready to edit your hosts file, which is a brute force method of making it work).
Cheers,
Rodney

To connect to another computer on your home network as a registered user, you need to enter the administrator's name and password for the computer you are trying access.

  • Use Your MacBook as a Network Bridge in Snow Leopard (10.6.2)

    Hey everybody,
I am trying to use my MacBook as a network bridge for my Sony Blu-Ray (BDP-S350) player so it can receive the updates that it needs. I need to know the steps to make your Mac a network bridge. Any Suggestions?

I'll guess that your MacBook connects wirelessly and that your player needs an Ethernet connection. In that case, in OS X 10.5 the way you'd do what you need to is to open the "Sharing" panel of System Preferences, then enable "Internet Sharing" by clicking on the checkbox next to it. Set "Share your connection from" to "AirPort" and below that check the box for Ethernet. The steps for OS X 10.6 are probably similar if not identical.

Really I don't lie and I am getting tired of people calling me a lier.
    Thanks.
I'm reluctant to wade into this but I noticed that if Mactracker is to be believed, the Early and Late MacBook Pro have the same Model Identifier, which would suggest that the SL installer for the Early MBP might see the Late MBP, which came with Lion, as close enough for government work. While the SL installer wouldn't necessarily be 100% suitable for the Lion Machine and probably wouldn't allow installing over the existing Lion partition, I can imagine it working on a clean partition or external USB or Firewire drive. A 10.6.8 combo updater could then configure the SL installation for the MBP it's actually on.

Connecting my Sony BD player to my MacBook Pro wireless network.  It sees the network but it then asks for a WPA security key.  Where do I find this key?

    Hi Michael,
It sounds like your router's authentication is set to WPA and thus where the key is established. Does your MacBook Pro connect to a wireless router? If so, that's where you'd need to get the key from via a web-based control panel for the router or if it's an AEBS via AirPort Utility.

  • My mid 2010 MacBook Pro loses network connectivity

I have four mac computers running on our home network.  My mid 2010 MacBook Pro has become notorious for losing network connectivity with the other computers.  It maintains it's internet connectivity consistently, but it's ability to see and connect with the other computers on the local network is finicky at best.  The other three computers (2008 iMac, 2012 iMac, 2012 MacBook Pro) all connect to our Actiontec MI424WR Fios router via ethernet, whereas the mid 2010 MacBook Pro connects via WiFi.
If anyone could please help me troubleshoot the issue, that'd be much appreciated.
    Sincerely.

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it.
    Step 4
This step will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 5
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • Trouble printing from a MacBook to a network printer wirelessly

I have a Samsung printer connected to a Windows 7 machine and am attempting to print from a MacBook. I try the usual AdvancedWindows+SMB-addressShare-name technique. When I go to print, the MB asks for My Username and password for the W7 box. Upon entering the information, I receive an NTSTATUS_CONNECTIONREFUSED message and no printing takes place.
Curiously, a Mac mini (10.5.8 also) which is connected to the network by wire (the MB is connected wirelessly) prints just fine to the same printer using the same configuration.
Does Anyone have any suggestions as to how to resolve this issue? Can Anyone point Me in the direction of documentation which could help?
    Thanks in advance.

I figured out the answer using this excellent Web page: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3000.html.
The problem was that when I used the "Wizard" on the PC to install the shared printer, it picked the Deskjet driver by default. But the iMac needs to get the printer data in Postscript, which its own driver then translates into Deskjet speak. So after creating the printer on the Thinkpad I had to go into its Properties and change to the Apple Color Laserwriter driver.

  • I am trying to setup bootcamp on my MacBook Air.  Network diagnostics doesn't believe I'm connected to the internet... but I am!!???

I am trying to setup bootcamp on my MacBook Air.  I have a wifi internet connection which works fine in Safari etc. However, when I get to the point of downloading the windows install files I am told the network is not connected, but it is!
I have a simple automatic connection set up to a wifi router which works fine for all standard internet functions - mail, safari, downloads in safari etc. Where it falls down is that the system doesn't recognise it in network diagnostics.  When I reach the point of downloading win installation files for my air from the internet it says I am not connected to the internet and runs network diagnostics which proceeds to break my internet connection.  If I stop network diagnostics, close the windows and simply switch my wifi off and on then I'm back up and running, but the network diagnostics still doesn't believe it.
Any ideas?  Seems completely illogical to me...

This is the message I get if that helps anyone...

  • IMac G5 can no longer see Macbook on my network

I have a home network on a wireless linksys router. I use an iMac G5 and MacBook. Both computers were working fine and could see one another. Now the iMac no longer sees the MacBook. It CAN see my Dell Laptop when it is on the network and connects fine. My MacBook sees the iMac no problem.
Both computers have file sharing and web sharing on.
I have tried logging on and off my accout to see if the finder on the iMac can see the macbook. Nothing changes.
I have tried connecting the computers directly with an ethernet cable, nothing.
Please help. I'm new to this

Should work the same for Ethernet, Wireless, FW, what have you.
That question has been asked more than a few times, I think answered too, but I can't remember for sure... messed up aliases, Passwords, Permissions, Files???
My connection, or Apple's Forums are excruciatingly slow for me at moment or I'd try searching this Forum for the cure(s).

  • Can't connect MacBook to a network behind D-link router

    MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.8)
I am not able to access shared folders or networks behind a D-link DI-524 router from my MacBook but can access the networks/shared folders from PCs. From my MacBook I can connect wirelessly to the internet and access other computers connected to the router but I do not know what to do to get to the systems/networks behind the router. If I remove the router completely and connect my MacBook directly to the open ethernet cable that would have gone into the router I can see and connect to all of the networks.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi BDAqua, Thanks for your quick reply.
The cable from the router connects to the network at work, where all of the networks and shared folders are that I am trying to access. I am using this router to share the internet connection between multiple computers. There are 2 WinXP computers that connect to the router (1 wireless and 1 ethernet) and they can see the shared folders and access them at //serverip/sharename. My MacBook can communicate and share files with these two computers, but can't access anything beyond the router, as the others can. When I try to use smb://serverip/sharename I get error code 36, but when I remove the router and connect my MacBook directly to the internet I can access the shared folders using the same method. I am sure that I am assigned a 'real' ip as I can access a web server which is running on one of the computers behind the router whose port I had forwarded (using http://ip that I am assigned).

  • Connect MacBook to wifi network via Ethernet

I am looking for a way to connect my MacBook to my wifi network via my Ethernet port. I'm not having any trouble with the wifi but am looking at getting an apple tv and wish to be able to use wolan. As far as I know, wowlan is only available using the apple airport routers. Is there something I can get that plugs into my Ethernet port on my MacBook, connects to the wifi network and lets my MacBook treat it as a wired connection so I can use wolan? I assume something like this would. E cheaper than buying an apple router that supports wowlan...?
Also, how do I make sure that my current router actually supports wolan?
    Thanks.

We assume that you are trying to configure the AirPort Express to "join" your wireless network. In order to do so, you must enter in the wireless network name, exact type of security and password that your network is using.
Mistakes are often made with the security settings because different manufacturers use different nomenclature to mean the same thing. For example
WPA2 Personal on Apple = WPA2-PSK-AES on other wireless routers
    or
WPA/WPA2 Personal on Apple = WPA-PSK-TKIP on other wireless routers
Can you dig a bit deeper into your settings on your router to find out whether you are using AES or TKIP? Once you find that info, you should be able to match up the correct setting on the AirPort Express during the configuration.
Don't be fooled by the the message that you see when you click Update during the configuration process. The message states something to the effect that the settings have been stored successfully on the AirPort Express. What it doe not tell you is whether the settings that were stored are the correct settings.
You will know that you have the correct settings when you see a green light on the AirPort Express 40-45 seconds after you click the Update button.

  • Connect macbook to windows network

Trying to connect a workmate's macbook to MS SBSSRV 2008... absolutely no joy...

NO NEED TO SHOUT!! lol Caps lock is next to the A key.
It should work regardless. To connect to a server when connected to wi fi, from the top menu choose go->connect to server (or keyboard shortcut: Command-K)
Type in the share's IP address you want to access (or its hostname; IP address is way easier when testing).
When prompted for username and password, either enter your network username andf password.
If its wi fi you cant connect to, reboot the router and try again. or TRY TAKING CAPS LOCK OFF BEFORE YOU ENTER YOUR PASSWORD!

  • Unable to connect my Macbook to a network printer

    Hi,
My problem is specific to Canon iR2016 printer model which is connected to a router which in turn is connected to a wireless router. I want to connect my macbook pro to this printer, which somehow I am not able to.
Till now I have gone to "Print & Fax", clicked on "+" sign, then clicked on the "Windows" tab. There I can see the network printer listed. I select it, then asks for software driver or printer model. Now here I select Printer model, but my model iR2016 is not listed. Then I select generic Post script printer and Add. The printer gets added, but when I print, nothing prints. I also tried with generic laser printer option, but no luck.
    Look forward to feedback.
    Thanks.

Checking the Canon Australia web site the iR2016 lists UFR2 and PCL5e/PCL6 as supported print languages. Postscript was an option and given that the Generic PS did not work then it would be safe to assume that this option is not installed.
If you have installed the UFR2 v1.80 driver then you add this printer by selecting More Printers > Canon IP (UFR II). If you have installed the v2.xx driver then you simply select IP > LPD for the protocol. This then requires you to enter the IP address of the iR2016 and then you can browse for the iR2016 in the Print Using menu. However this is for a direct IP connection. You cannot use the UFR2 driver via the Windows share, which you mention trying.
So if the printer has its own Ethernet connection to the network then select to add the queue using IP > LPD, enter the IP address of the iR2016 and in the Print Using menu type 2016 to filter the list to the correct model. It should show UFRII in the name. Select this and you should be able to print.
