Macbook too polite: always  asks to join network

Hi - my father's new Macbook refuses to automatically go to his preferred network. Can anyone please advise what he might do? When it's woken from sleep it always asks if he wants to join a network.
Many thanks...

Well I would try turning off the "Ask to join new networks" option. Then make sure when you join your network that you check the box that says "Remember this network". Also sometimes it just takes a while for the macbook to reconnect to the network, so maybe waiting for it to connect would also be the answer.
Not sure if this is going to help but it should work.

  • Mac always 'Asking to join networks' on startup

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro, latest OSX, but everytime i log on i get a pop up box saying 'none of your preferred networks are availible' and it has a list of about 4 networks in a box below to choose from.
My network is always there, so i click it, click join, and i'm connected.
The problem is it always does this everytime i start up my mac. Why doesn't it remember this selection?
Any help or advice would really be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tom

I'm getting this also. Was disappointed to see nobody knows the answer. When the dialog box comes up if you click on your preferred network it asks AGAIN for the password etc, even check the remember still keeps the dialog box returning when you login.
However, I have found that if you select cancel, 9 times out of 10 it will then automatically connect to my preferred network that it said 1 minute before was not available. Although inconvenient, cancel does get me connected.
I thought it was because I have another network in range, do you also have another network in range?

  • Firewall always asks for incoming network connections

Some of my installed applications like Dropbox, Coda, Adium, jDownloader... are always asking if incoming network connections are allowed?
How can I turn this off? It's getting really annoying!

I'm having this problem, too. It happens with EVERYTHING, including Word, Excel, and Photoshop. I have my Firewall turned on, but I also have it set to allow those programs to accept incoming network connections.

  • Ask to join network is turned off

And it's still asking to join networks....
Why is this happening and how can I stop it?

  • With two iPhones 4, turning on Facetime on both iPhones, turning on Data Roaming, Enable 3G, cellular data.  Wifi has been enabled on, Wi-Fi is on, 'ask to join networks' is on.  I cannot get the two iPhones 4 to do 'FaceTime' with each other.  Changes?

May 16, 2011:  The two iPhone 4 phones, being next to each other, cannot do FaceTime.  with Data Roaming = On, Wi-Fi = On, 'Ask to join Networks' = On, Enable 3G = On, Cellular Data = On,
Why is Facetime on one iPhone 4 not connecting to ther other iPhone 4 when both have the 'FaceTime' icon showing on both?

I will through that note and have applied the items in that note on both iPhones.  Both iPhones are in the same physical location.  Both appear to be connected to a wi-fi network.  Still no FaceTime connection.  Is it such that both iPhones must be connected to a Wi-Fi and that wifi must be a network without a password needed to join it?  I thought 'Data Roaming = On' was such that iPhone 4 would then find a wifi network without a password needed and one could use FaceTime.
Is that the incorrect assumption?   If yes or no, what specific items are needed to be checked before I do this again or be checked while attempting FaceTime.

  • WiFi Ask To Join Networks not working

On both my ipod touch 4th gen that was bought new, and my girlfriends ipod touch 3rd gen she bought used, our Wi-fi itself works fine when we go in and choose to connect to a wifi network, as well as to auto-connect to known networks, but our ipods will never ask us if we'd like to join an available wifi network even though your Ask To Join Networks setting is on.  Is this a known issue with ipods, and is there a way to get it working?
My girlfriend originally owned the ipod touch 4th gen and gave it to me and so I did a wipe and setup as new with my own apple id, but that didn't make any difference for this issue, it didn't prompt to join networks before or after.

I just found out I had a problem with this with my new 4s as well.  It was not a problem with my iphone 4.  Even though I have "Ask to Join Networks" off, it seems to ask me whenever I use the Maps application when I am driving.  Really annoying and the only way to stop it is to disable wifi.

  • Settings Ask to join networks?

In the Settings>WiFi>Ask to join networks, do you keep it on or off? Do you suppose that could be a cause for further battery drain? Thanks!

I doubt it would cause a significant additional amount, if any, of battery drain. All it does is ask you to join a network if your already-joined networks are unavailable. It will still be looking for your already-joined networks.

  • Should "Ask to Join Networks" be off to save data?

Should "Ask to Join Networks" be off to save data?

Ask to join networks is asking you if you want to join an available WiFi network. It has nothing to do with your cellular data. In fact, joining available WiFi networks will mean you're not using cellular data.

  • My IPhone 4 never connects to a Wi-Fi network. It's supposed to connect to "known" networks automatically. Other networks pop up but the join box never is active. My Wi-Fi and Ask to join networks are both "ON" but nothing seems to work. Would appreciate

My iPhone 4 never connects to a Wi-Fi network even though it's supposed to connect to ?known? networks. My Wi-Fi and Ask to join boxes are both "ON." Other networks pop up but the "JOIN' boxes never work. Would appreciate some help on how to connect. Thanks

Never has or this is a recent development?
If no change after resetting network settings at Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup.
If no change after that, your iPhone has a hardware problem.

  • Not asking to join networks

I have a problem which seems to be getting more frequent. Sometimes the phone joins a network without me even asking (new ones in areas I've never been to), and other times it won't even ask to join a network if I'm very close to the router!

Just curious.. is your network at home "hidden"? In other words, do you have to know the exact name and password to join it, or if you look for available networks, does it just pop up in the list? I have the same problem and my home network is hidden.
I also have the problem after using a bluetooth headset. If I turn bluetooth off and manually reconnect to wi-fi, it has no problem until I use bluetooth again. Have you experienced that at all?

  • Iphone doesnt ask to join networks unless outside or at starbucks

Hi I just got the Iphone 3G and it only asks me to join a network if outside or at Starbucks. When Iam outside it is usually cold and it asks me too join Pucus, but when I return inside it drops the network and returns to edge.Do I have a bad phone or do I not know what Iam doing? Please help.

    Hello i bert,
What you're describing would happen if you're within range of one of your neighbor's "Pucus" WiFi network when you are outside.
If you do not have a WiFi router of your own, and you're not using Starbucks on a routine basis, you might just want to turn WiFi off on the iPhone to get more use out of the charge on your battery.
If you have a broadband internet connection at home along with a WiFi-capable computer, you might consider getting a WiFi router:

  • My Macbook Air is always "looking for a network"

The computer is constantly disconnecting, searching, then reconnecting to the network. This amounts to an extremely slow internet experience and no capabilities to watch videos at all! Not even youtube, as it can't buffer ahead. It is ironic that my 10 year old Powerbook G4 is faster than my brand new Macbook Air!!
2 weeks ago I had this complaint and Apple replaced the airport card and now the problem, which was annoying before, is much worse and not tolerable. It takes 2 minutes to load a google search!
I have a feeling this is something to do with the setup because I have heard that one of the upgrades on iPads was to disconnect when on 3G/4G networks to save data use but this is completely absurd on a laptop. Any chance the new programming was across the board on all airport updates?(good chance this ipad thing was just a rumor too!- I don't really know)
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Enter the PIN code that the user used to lock the device originally, using Find My Mac to have done so.
Alternatively, go to an Apple Store to have it unlocked. Be prepared to prove the unit belongs to you. As the PIN code feature is designed for owners to thwart thieves who have stolen a device.

  • Keynote always asks to accept network connections-is there a remedy for this?

Every time I launch Keynote, it asks if I want to accept network connections--kinda annoying.
It is already set to allow all incoming connections but it still asks every time it's launched.
    Any remedy for this?

In Keynote Preferences> Remote Panel, if you have Enable iPhone and iPod touch Remotes option checked, you will get this warning when you start Keynote. Turning off the option stops the warning from appearing the next time you open Keynote. This is also true if you are using the Remote.app on an iPad to link to an OSX version of Keynote. With the option in OSX Keynote 09 turned off, you can't use a remote such as an iPhone or iPad to run your presentation, so it is your choice: have remote linking and get the warning or turn off the capability and get no warning.

  • Can iPad comes online when Ask to Join Networks is on?

I lost my LTE iPad few days ago. Find my iPhone is enabled, it's set Lost Mode, but it didn't appear online yet. Maybe nobody found it yet or it is broken or something else happened. I'm wondering if there is a chance at all that the iPad comes online, since it has a passcode set by default and it will normally not join unknown networks?

Thank you for your answer! I guess someone found it, because I offered connection to it with my Mobile WiFi router in the area where I lost it. The battery was fully charged and in good condition. But anyway, if someone recharged the iPad and powered it on, can he, if he don't know the 4 digit passcode, connect it to a network that is unknown to the device? Or can the device connect to a foreign WiFi network somehow automatically - maybe in some kind of secure mode - to receive the Lost mode command or anything I send by iCloud? Or does this work by gps?

  • My new iPad (3rd generation) will not remember wi-fi passwords. It is set up to ask to join networks. It remembers my password at home but forgets all others if it disconnects for more than a few minutes. Frustrating!

My new iPad will not remember passwords.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
