Macbook turns on, but nothing on the screen

I had my macbook pro last september for my birthday, and until last night it had been working properly. but just tonight it won't start up! when i held the power button, the screen stays black although there is this normal sound when mbp's starting. I blind my way and click randomly (hoping to choose the username like i used to) and then the screen's all white-and-gray thing. Any idea why, and how, to fix this? also how much would it cost? thanks

nothing, my mouse just stops at the edge of my screen. but i have it mirrored. when i turn mirror off then my mouse goes of the screen but nothing happens on the display. i am going to take it in to the store tonight and see if they can send it back and fix it.
thanks
chris

    I came home and attempted to power on my iPad2. I can see the backlight but nothing on the screen. When I try to reset by pushing the off button and the power button at the same time I can sometimes see the characters briefly but the screen has lines. Can someone tell me if there is anything else I can do before a trip to the repair shop?
    Will

    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
    At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
    If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • My one month old laptop turns on but nothing appears on screen...help

    MMy laptop turns on but nothing appears on the black screen

    Try to launch your Mac in Safe mode by taking these steps:
    - Click on the Apple sign() at the upper left corner of the Desktop, select 'Shut down' from a drop-down menu;
    - Wait until your computer turns off, then press the Power button(⌽);
    - Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift(⇧) key. It should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone;
    - Release the Shift(⇧) key when you see a grey Apple sign() and the progress bar below;
    This will force the system to perform several maintenance routines and load essential system software.
    Once you've seen the Desktop
    - Open Disk Utility application:
    1. Click on Finder at the bottom of your Desktop;
    2. Select Applications folder from Finder's left sidebar and then open Utilities folder (or press Command(⌘)-Shift(⇧)-U), double-click on Disk Utility icon;
    - Choose your main hard drive from the left sidebar ('Macintosh HD', usually);
    - Click on 'Verify Disc' at the bottom right corner, your Mac will perform a diagnostic test. Click on 'Repair Disk' if prompted to fix problems, or follow instructions given on the Disk Utility window;
    - Once the routine finished, click on ""Verify Disc Permissions"", after it's done, click on 'Repair Disc Permissions';
    Wait until it will finish and restart your mac

  • My screen on my mac book pro is black. I can see the mouse, but nothing on the screen

    Please help! My computer has been perfectly fine! I get home and turn it on, and it boots up just fine, but my screen is black. However, I can see the mouse but nothing else. What do I do!?

    Try resetting SMC and NVRAM and then reboot.

    Try booting the Recovery Partition.  Power off (hold the power key down for 7 to 10 second).  Boot and hold down the Command and R keys.  Is the screen still black?  If so it is not a software problem so take it in for diagnosis and repairs.  Make a Genius Bar reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country .

  • T60 will not boot - lights, but nothing on the screen, no beeps

    Hey everyone,
    My approximately 4 year old (and thus out of warranty) T60 is having trouble booting. Sometimes, but not always, when I press the power button I get the lights turning on, but then all but the power (Z in a circle) indicator and the battery (if I have it in - I've tried it with and without) and the power cord (if that's plugged in- again, tried every way) lights stay on. Here's a video of exactly what's happening (made by someone else):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pm4Lklr6-Rk
    It just sits there and nothing comes up.
    I've tried the following and still had trouble booting:
    Removing each of the two RAM modules (I have a 512 and a 2gig stick) - I would leave one in so that it would work, but I tried it with each.
    Removing the hard drive
    Removing the optical drive
    I also opening it up to see what I could see, but there are no clearly loose connectors. The fan starts just fine, but then turns off shortly after I press the power button. The harddrive also seems to spin up, but the indicator doesn't flash for very long before the lights return to the configuration I mentioned above. There are as far as I know no beeps, though I had beeps disabled in Windows (not sure if that matters at the POST level though).
    However, it does sometimes boot up. I can't tell what exactly makes it work sometimes and other times not. When it does boot, it is extremely stable and works just fine. I'm tempted to just leave it on 24/7, but I'm on vacation and will have to turn it off at least to get through airport security.
    The last time, I tried holding the power button down for about a minute with all power sources disconnected, and it did boot up, but that may have been coincidence.
    I've seen some threads that make it seem like perhaps this problem might be related to the USB ports (http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T400-won-t-boot-can-t-access-BIOS/td-p/20280... but visual inspection doesn't reveal anything wrong with them.
    Any ideas? I'm leaving it on as long as I can now, but I can play more with turning it off and trying things once I get back home in a few days. It's frustrating, since once I get it to start up, it's more or less solid and Windows and all peripherals seem to run as expected.
    Thanks!

    Try the DIMMs one at a time

  • MacBook turning on, but not revealing main screen with icons

    I noticed my MacBook was having an issue (beachball showing up) so powered it down. Now when I power it on, the gray screen with the Apple shows up and the little circle goes around and around, but it keeps on doing that and doesn't load the finder or the icons on the screen or anything. Just gray screen with apple logo and little whirling circle below it. Thanks for any tips.

    Insert your OS installer disk. Shut it down again by holding down the power button. Then reboot and hold down the 'c' key until it boots from the DVD. Select your language. Then from the Utilities menu select Disk Utility. Select your hard drive in the left side column and then click on Repair Disk.
    It might help if you filled out the info at the bottom by using the "My Settings" at the right --->
    Indicate which MBP model you have (cpu) and the correct version of the OS you are running. It's definitely not (10.0.x).

  • 2007 Macbook turns on, but no life (black screen)

    Hi,
    The fan on my macbook can be heard when it is turned on, but other than that there seems to be no life, the apple light on the lid does not light up, there is no chime sound, and the caps lock key light will not light when pressed. It was working fine when i last used it a week ago & ther has been no damage done to it since then. I've tried resetting the SMU, P-RAM & S-RAM and there is still no response. Any advice would be appreciated!
    Thanks
    Ryan

  • My iMac turns on but nothing appears on screen?

    I just bought an iMac G5 that from someone I know and he told me something was wrong with it. When I turn it on I hear the chime, the light on the front turns on, the fan turns on and I hear disks spinning which sounds like the superdrive. I took it apart thinking it had to do with the motherboard because he said thats what it was and the lights on the motherboard turn on also. What could the problem be?

    You really need to get the install discs from the previous owner, or you can get them from Apple, but you should have them handy. You can try booting from the Leopard disc and using Disk Utility to verufy/repair the hard drive.

  • Computer turns on but nothing appears on the screen

    Hi,
    I have had this desktop computer for about 2 years. I usually use it almost daily and turn it off at the end of the day. Every few months or so the computer would turn on but nothing would appear on the screen. I would have to hold the power button to turn it off then turn in on a couple times or wait until the next day and the computer would turn on and everything would appear on the screen and work perfectly. Last week, the computer once again turned on but nothing appeared on the screen, except this time, after a week, the computer will now turn on except there is still nothing appearing on the screen. I no longer hear the fans running, however, I hear everything else running as normal. I have unplugged and re-plugged in all the cords multiple times and still, nothing.
    Please help! Thank you.

  • Nothing on the screen when I turn on the computer?

    Hi, my laptop( hp g62) is turning on but nothing is appearing on the screen?

    Hi ChevChelios, welcome to the HP Forums. I will use a random model number of a G62 as reference (G62-140US).  I have included the start up troubleshooting document. Find the symptom that most closely matches, and follow those steps. Perhaps "Symptom: LEDs glow, fan noise is heard, but display is black or blank" matches based on what you described.
    Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP). I hope this works for you.
    If you require further assistance, please provide the model number, and the installed version of Windows, as well as the results of the previous troubleshooting done.
    How Do I Find My Notebook Model Number?
    Which Windows operating system am I running?
    I look forward to your response.

    If these do not resolve the issue or if you are not comfortable with proceeding through these steps then take your Mac to an Apple store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.  An Apple store will perform these initial steps, diagnose the problem, and give an estimate for repairs (if needed).  If the Mac is less than one year old or is covered by AppleCare any repairs would be free.

    To fix your issue is too complicated and lengthy to go into all of it here, it will require the services of person very familiar and experienced with Mac's to first recover your data and then restore OS X back to a functional state, then hopefully achieve the goals you were attempting.
    I advise you hire the services of a local Mac computer support technician experienced in these matters.
    Have them look at your Wifi and computer backup proceedures in the process.
    Good Luck.
