Macbook turns on but won't boot (start)

Purchased macbook in December 2008. Genius bar staff said it needed repair. before handing over the macbook for repair, I tried the following:
HT 3964 (Intel-based macs) resetting the system management controller (did not work)
HT 1455: Starting up in safe mode(did not work)
Turned the macbook over to the genius bar staff on Friday, March 12th. Informed it would be 5 days before it's repaired. Never had any problems with my windows machine. If it weren't for firewire, I'd stay with PC. Details to follow.

Any electronic device can fail at anytime. That's what warranties are for. Did you have AppleCare? I alway advise buying it, especially on a laptop. Tip: You can get an AppleCare plan on eBay for about 1/2 the price of retail.

  • MacBook  turns on but won't boot up

Macbook will turn on, the apple symbol shows on desktop, wheel turns but won't fiish the start up to a full desktop.  Any ideas!

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • IMac will turn on, but won't boot unless I wait until the next day

I've searched this forum, but can't seem to pinpoint my problem. I received this iMac for my office last March, and everything worked just fine. Lately, for the past 3-4 months, I can turn it on in the morning and everything runs fine.
I turn it off in the middle of the workday, thinking I won't need to use it for the rest of the day.
Of course, something comes up, and I need to turn it back on. When I press the button to turn it back on, nothing happens. Just a black screen and if it's quiet enough, I can hear the hard drive running.
It won't boot until I come back the next morning, almost as if I'm giving it time to cool off.
    Any ideas?

Turn off Energy Saver and use Screen Saver instead. Energy Saver is sensitive to certain non-Apple USB devices and may cause such a problem.

  • Pavillion dv9580us turns on, but won't boot or POST

I have an HP dv9580us that I bought about 2 years ago. It had been working well until a few days ago. Now when I turn it on the lights come on, the fan turns, but nothing happens. A few seconds later everything turn off, then the lights come back on again, and it just stays like that. No beeps, no blinking lights (they turn on but don't blink), no sounds, the screen completely blank all the time.
So, I think the BIOS is not even making it to POST at all. I already tried re-seating the RAM, took the battery off, took the CD drive off, re-seated the HD, and reset the bios.
Any ideas on what may be the problem? I suspect the motherboard, but on most cases I read about the system does boot or POST.

According to the result of your tests, you arer pretty sure that there is a CPU or Motherboard failure.
Not easy to say which one fails. Maybe both!
If your computer is under warranty, don't hesitate!
You can extract the HDD and make a backup of it before you send the computer.
I would recommend using a USB adapter that can connect your internal hdd (now external!) to the USB of to another computer.
Modern USB adapters for HDD can do SATA and (P)ATA. They are even shipped with an external power supply so that you can power on your hdd.
If your computer is not covered by any warranty, well, that's harder. You could try to extract the CPU and replace it to see if anything goes better.
Or you could just purchase a new computer and transfer your current data to your newer computer.
There are even some tools that allow you to transfer the data AND the system+applications directly to your new computer so that when you power it on for the first time with the transferred configuration, it can boot enough of Windows to detect the new hardware.
I used to use Qualystem ubiboot to do so but now that Qualystem has been acquired it seems that this tool is not available anymore (or with a larger/more expensive package). There was a company from New Zealand that had a similar tool...
    Good luck

  • My macbook turns on but doesn't boot up to log in screen

I was using Ableton and sudenly my Mac just stopped working. I've rebooted, removed power, rest the smc but can't get it to reboot to the log in screen. It turns on but doesn't do anything but show me a white screen.

  • Turns on but won't boot up

Hello everyone, I really need your help and advice on this one. I am really praying that it is not a huge expensive problem, but I have a white macbook that I bought about a year and a half ago. There has been very little problems with it, no random shut downs, a couple of frozen moments which I figured were just incidental, as I would restart and continue on my journey. however, tonight I has updated iTunes because I had just bought a new iPod, and as I was working I got a grey screen saying that my computer needs to shut down. I did as told, figuring that another one of these incidental moments was happening.
Much to my dismay, my computer now turns on, like the screen flicks on and off, I can hear the familiar "eject" sound from the drive, but i do not hear a chime, and the screen continues to remain black. I have left it for about a 1/2 hour thinking it would kick in, but nothing. I tried everything listed on the support page titled "When my macbook won't turn on" icluding resetting the power amanger, and the various other combination of holding keys, but nothing has happened.
What could possibly going on here, and is there anything I can do to fix it. I am from Canada and have no way of getting to an Apple store, the sad thing is, I just went with friends to the states today, and visited an apple store, but as of now there is no way to get back. I am at a loss of what to do. Plz help!!!
Thank you sooo much in advance!

Another thing is I want to put the install CD in to try and boot from a disk but I already have a cd in the drive from before and can't eject it. Any ideas on how to get it out?

  • HP 8 G2 clearly turns on but won't boot up

I press the power button on my HP 8G2 and it lights up on the screen, but nothing else, then goes black again

    Hey @like2drnkbr ,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand you're having issues with your HP 8 G2 tablet.
The first things to try would be a hard reset if you have not yet tried it: While the tablet is on, press and hold the power button for 8+ seconds to force shut down. Turn the tablet back on and see if that helps.
If that fails to resolve the issue you can try a recovery from micro-SD storage:
    1. Download the update.zip for your device and copy the file to the root directory of an empty micro-SD card (at least 1 GB, FAT 32 format). Do not unzip this file. You can find the update.zip for your device here: HP - Drivers & Downloads.
NOTE: You will need the exact model number to locate the correct package. There are multiple update.zip recovery images available. Ensure you select the correct download for your region. If your tablet does not boot after attempting to update you may need to try both the KitKat and JellyBean images. For information on finding your product or model number click here: Finding Your HP Product Model Number.
    2. Fully charge the tablet and then disconnect the power from the device.
    3. Power off the device.
If your tablets micro-SD slot is on the side or bottom of your tablet skip to step 5.
4a. Place the tablet on a flat surface, display panel side down, with the release notch towards you.
NOTE: Before positioning the tablet with the display panel facing down, make sure the work surface is clear of any foreign objects. Failure to follow this caution can result in damage to the display panel assembly.
4b. Remove the back cover. Use the release notch to remove the back cover.
4c. Insert the micro-SD memory card into the reader slot.
4d. Reverse the procedure detailed above to install the back cover and continue to step 6.
    5. Insert the micro-SD card into the micro-SD card reader.
    6. Press and hold the volume up (may also be volume down, my available documentation for this does not specify) button and power button at the same time.
    7. When the HP logo appears on the screen, release all the buttons.
    8. When the Android system recovery menu appears, use the volume down button to highlight "apply update from external storage".
    9. Press the power button to validate "apply update from external storage".
    10. Use the volume down button to highlight the software recovery file, update.zip.
    11. Press the power button to select the update.zip file and launch the recovery.
NOTE: Wait until the entire recovery process finishes. The device might seem unresponsive at times (multiple reboots and black screens) when it is performing the update.

  • Macbook turns on but won't charge.

Ok, so here's my quick story. Iced tea was spilled on part of my macbook about 2 weeks ago. It turned off and wouldn't turn back on. Later that day it turned on for about 30 mins and then turned back off. No noises were made, it turned off quietly. Macbook would not turn on for over a week, battery still showed power. Mac turns back on today, appears to be working normally. My personal charger will not charge the mac, my friends charger also does not work. The light doesn't come on the charger and nothing happens. What is wrong with my mac?
It also will not power my macbook, it doesn't recognize that its plugged in.

    Welcome to the forums.
Anytime liquid is spilled on anything electronic. It should be turned off and the battery removed. Never turn it on until you give it a chance to dry out.
It sounds like your MacBooks circuitry has shorted out in the charger section and possibly other areas. It is hard to say without testing on the bench. You will need to have it serviced by Apple or another repair service. Do a search on the web and you will find some that does work cheaper than Apple and will give a quote before repairs are done.

macbook pro recognizes but won't print with hp desk jet 5550. Help!

Hi, I used the Mac setup instructions, not the PC ones.  The printer was automatically recognised in print and scan when I connected it with a USB cable.  I accessed the server's web-based page and followed all the instructions, but still no joy.  Thanks for the tip about posting.  I have just posted in the section you suggested, so let's see what happens.  From a quick scan around the apple forums, lost of other people seem to having precisely the same problem (and not just with HP printers!), but unfortunately, no-one seems to be offering a solution!  And trying to get through to the apple online support is a complete waste of time.  They've been 'not available' for two days now.  Christmas/New Year shutdown, I suppose.  Thanks for all your help, though!

    Hi Eslam El-Gammal,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that after resetting your iPhone, you are being prompted for Apple ID information that is not yours. This can happen if an iPhone is restored without turning off the Find My Phone feature. For more information on this, please refer to the attached article.

    Hi cybertoof,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing a startup issue with your Mac, it's booting to a gray screen with an Apple logo. Try the suggestions in the article linked below, they will resolve most issues related to starting up your Mac.

  • IMac with bootcamp and parallel boots into windows 7 but won't boot intoxc lion.

IMac with bootcamp and parallel boots into windows 7 but won't boot into Mac OS lion?

    Hi,
Thanks for your suggestion. Actually that was not the problem, because I had the Mcintosh drive set as my boot drive. The answer was that my Lion Os got somehow corrupted and I had to reinstalll Lion. This was all after I discussed the situation with the Apple Support people.

  • MacBook Pro Turns On, But Will Not Boot

I recently have had trouble with my MacBook Pro (2.4GHZ Duo Core purchased in late '07).  Last night before I went to bed I put my computer to sleep after normal usage of my computer.  I did not update anything such as firmware or progams in the past few days.  I had it connected to a WD external drive and an external monitor as I have for months.  When I went to wake up the computer this morning it would nothing appeared on the screen as it normally does.  I waited and tried different things, but no luck.  After a minute or two, I just turned it off by holding the power button down.  After a moment or so, I turned it back on.  The cd-rom drive spun up, but the computer did not post (chime), hard drive seemed not to be active, and nothing appeared on either the external display or the internal LCD.  I then turned off the computer again.  I disconnected everything, removed the battery for a few minutes and then tried to start it again.  The same result appeared each time: cd-rom spins up, no hard drive activity, no display.
I tried various things that was suggested in the Apple Support area such as resetting the PRAM & SMC, as well as trying to get it to boot in safe mode and entering the BIOS.  Nothing.  Before I take it into the Apple store to have it looked at since it is very far away, I was wondering if anyone had any input on what could be wrong and if I am able to fix it myself.  Thank you.

It's possible that you have the NVIDIA problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Not really sure why it won't boot at all. People have reported suddenly getting no video at all, but I think they usually do get the startup chime.
Probably the best bet is to make the trek to the Apple Store, as this sounds very much like a hardware problem. They should be able to test specifically for the NVIDIA problem.
    Good luck!
