Macbook typing rubbish instead of text

My wifes Macbook (new Jan2010) does not type text but a series of symbols instead. This happens on every key and regardless of whether she has it on English, Russian or Azeri language inputs. I have tried to change the language and text options but the system will not allow this. The only means of typing on the computer at the moment is via the character viewer option. Even when using the keyboard viewer symbols appear on screen rather than letters.
There is another problem encountered when hiding any page etc that is on screen (hitting orange tab). It drops to the bottom of the screen in slow motion.
We can not enter into safe mode as the password cannot be recognised etc.
I have loaded Sophos on the computer but all appears ok.

That means your machine thinks that both the alt/option and shift are always down. Sounds like damage to me, but the way to see for sure whether it is a keyboard issue is just try another keyboard (usb or wireless).
Of course your symbols will change with a different keyboard layout, because alt/option and shift do different things on Russian and Azeri than they do on English.

AAAAAs instead of text in the latest version of Safari

I'm getting strings of AAA's surrounded by boxes instead of text in my browser - primarily in ads and in videos that use Flash. I'm using the latest version of Safari on my 2013 model iMac 27 with Mavericks OS (latest update installed) and the latest version of Flash (all of this as of 11/14/14). Is anyone else having this problem, and if so have you been able to resolve the issue? I spoke with Apple, who, as they always do, spent a good deal of time trying to find a solution, but to no avail. After spending much time with a very gracious and knowledgable Senior Advisor, they suggested contacting Adobe, and if they didn't have a solution, they (Apple) would gladly continue to work on this issue with me.

If I had to place a bet on what this is, I'd put my money on a corrupted system font. It's not even really an A. It's a different glyph. It reminds me of the "missing character' box that you'd see when trying to display high-ascii text that isn't installed (like Korean on an english machine without font support), but this is even stranger.
The dialog itself looks like the "Do you want to allow this site to store some information on your computer" prompt, which is definitely Flash Player.

This is also a common problem when one installs Microsoft products. They duplicate a lot of the Apple fonts and cause all sorts of havoc with capital "A" in boxes.
If that is the problem then you'll need to run Font Book in your Applications Folder. There are commands here to check for corrupted or duplicate fonts.
You may also want to try Restore Standard Fonts (also in Font Book) to see if you can get Geneva back that way.

How can I display an icon, instead of text string, as a validation prompt?

OK, I noticed a bug in my validate method. This is updated to fix the bug, and to include the recomendation about background-image:

How can i use text only instead of text plus the folder icon in the bookmarks toolbar; older firefox allowed this.

I prefer using text only instead of text plus a folder icon in the bookmarks toolbar because it used less space and I can display more bookmark folders in that toolbar. I am getting strange numeric symbols or tiles instead of text when using Firefox. Repeated reloads and virus scans have not fixed it. I can't find a patch. Help! I hate IE!

Each time I open Firefox, I get blocks or tiles of numbers for each character instead of text. The tiles appear as composites of four digits, stacked two by two. At some websites, normal text does appear in boxes but mostly as this numeric gibberish. The functionality of the Firefox software does not seem to have been affected. But if I can't read it, I can't use it.

Try to set the pref gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.use_gdi_table_loading to false on the about:config page.
To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. 
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

As expected, cdm-git also works fine since DMs only work in the root mode as of now.
Just for the record, both type commands output "/usr/bin/startx" and pacman -Q gives "systemd 215-4".

I use Apex 4.0.2 and the theme is Builder Blue 2. When I click edit tab, I get "Tab Label" that is required field and a region called "images". As I got from you, I cannot utilize images in my case.

Helvetica Light Appears As An Image Instead Of Text

Earlier i was using "Helvetica" on my Adobe Muse website that i am designing. I had to change it from "Helvetica" to "Helvetica Light" and the text started to show as an image instead of text. I mean it does not remain text anymore and when i export the site it shows as a png file. Although i can still edit the text of course.
I have seen a question on the forum (HERE) that explains what is happening but there is no explanation how to correct it. I really want to use Helvetica Light instead of normal Helvetica. Can any one tell me how to keep it as a text instead of a png file?

Not all visitors to your website will have Helvetica Light installed on their computer, so the only way for Muse to give that exact look is to turn the text into an image.
If you want the text to stay live text and not become an image, you have to limit yourself to the fonts in the 'web safe' or 'web fonts' categories. If you use a system font, Muse will rasterize the text to give you the exact appearance you desire.

I think in the menu there is a point like infoprovider specific properties (or similar) in rsa1. Here you can decide what value is shown. Try this, but I'm not sure that this also work in portal.

In BeX only Key is display instead of Text in filter value

Hi,
Our company migrated from BW 3.0b to BI 7.0 Netweaver 2004s recently.
Before the migration, a value in the Filtersection of an executed query in the BEx Analyzer was displayed as text. Now after the migration it always displays the key instead of text.
If i put the same InfoObject in the Free Characteristics than it shows text like i choosed in the display section of the properties.
Do you have any clue why?

Try to be on the latest SP available as a part of sanity check.
Try first to download latest FEP from service.sap.com/swdc
Download>Support Packages and Patches">SAP Frontend Components">SAP GUI FOR WINDOWS">SAP GUI FOR WINDOWS 6.40>Win32>Bw700SP09P_904-10001615.exe.exe
download that file rename as .exe and execute it.

Officejet 6310 prints solid black line instead of text.

Good day. My officejet 6310 has started printing a 3/8" solid black line instead of text. I've replaced both color and black cartridges. I've also run align and clean cartridges. Does anyone have helpful suggestions?

This type of result is often due to errors in the HP printer drivers. Several things can be tried. Sometimes, using a tested driver for an older, but compatible printer will do the job. A lot of folks used the use the HPLJ2 driver even with HPLJ3 and 4 systems. Another option is to try to print as a graphic. At this point, I can only suggest playing around with things. A lot of folks like the graphic driver aspect instead.
You might also consider printing to the printer in a PS mode rather than PCL if that option is available.
I am only suggesting things I have seen tried by various folks. I don't have a good explanation.

Some prints have black stripes instead of text

Sometimes when I print a pdf, the printouts contain black stripes instead of text.
Acrobat X Pro was used to create the documents from Word 2010.
The Printer is a
HP Laserjet 4700
Driver: HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (61.118.1.11744); UDP Version: 5.4.0.11744
I also tried another drivers AND also another Printer (HP 4700 too).
Still the same results.
Do you have any ideas what could be the reason for that problem?

Symbols show instead of text in itunes (menu items only)???

Hi can anyone help me please? My itunes is suddenly showing square like symbols instead of text, does anyone know how to fix this please?

Whats happened is somehow the itunes program language settings was changed from english to another language thats not installed on your PC, therefore nothing but squares show (Usually some asian language like chinese). I will try to direct you on how to change it back to english even tho you can not read it.
1) Open itunes and at the top where you would normally see File,Edit,View ect ect. Goto the second listing from the lefthand side (This is edit) then on that menu pick the last thing at the bottom (This is preferences)
2) Select the first tab from the lefthand side (General tab) and at the bottom where you see a dropdown menu is the Language section.
3) Open the dropdown menu and select the 5th listing down (This is english)
4) At the bottom righthand corner where you would normally see "OK" and "Cancel", pick the first button from the lefthand side (This is OK)
5) Now for the language to take you need to close itunes, then reopen it
