MacBook unable to read leopard upgrade DVD

I have a MacBoook I purchased in early 2007, I am currently using Tiger 10.4.11. Yesterday I bought Leopard 10.5.1 with the intention of upgrading Tiger to Leopard with no success. When I inserted the Install DVD my computer self-ejected the DVD before anything even came on the screen. I can play regular DVDS, but for some reason the Install Disk won't read... anyone know what may be causing this?
Thanks.

Welcome to Apple Discussions:
The latest Leopard DVD is 10.5.4, so you have a very old version. Be sure it is a full install DVD and not an update DVD or one that came with a computer.

  • Macbook unable to read iDVD created DVDs

I've created a slideshow using iDVD. It plays just fine on my DVD player, but not on my Macbook. The computer drive reads commercial DVDs just fine, but also will not read DVDs I've made on a DVD recorder. The superdrive on the computer was replaced not too long ago as it was erratic, but it has been working fine since. Suggestions would be welcome.

what media brand and type are you using? Please tell me you are not using Memorex plus. I recommend Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R only for troubleshooting on this forum and burning to a disc image from the file menu within iDVD6 prior to burning to this recommended media at 4x or slower. Test said image with apple's dvd player app prior to using apple's disc utilities or toast to lower the burn speed. You cannot lower the burn speed with apple's iDVD6 alone. Good luck. Hope this helps but if not, come on back.

  • Cannot upgrade from Mac OS X (10.4.11) with  Mac OS X leopard upgrade DVD

I tried to install the Leopard today and I was unsuccessful. I was kept from proceeding to the initial install with a box that said Mac OS X cannot be upgraded to V 10.5 on your computer- Mac OS X v 10.4 or later cannot be found on your computer. At this point I can proceed and I had to quit. I brought my Macbook Pro last October just as the Leopard was being released. I purchased for a very small sum the Mac OS X Leopard Upgrade DVD but i used it today and no success. If anyone can assist me in this matter I would appreciate it. I am up to date with firmware and all other soft ware updates etc. I have also have v 10.5.1,2,3 in a folder ready to be added once I can install the my Leopard DVD

I posted a few weeks ago stating that I was unable to upgrade.
I ran Utilities and tried again to no avail.
I called Apple and they told me to backup everything and do a fresh install. Before doing that, I decided to see if the Leopard Upgrade DVD could see my backup because I created it so that it would be a bootable hard disk.
It did recognize my external disk, so I clicked on the Utilities application to see if it could see my hard disk and it couldn't. When I got back to the window that allowed me to select a hard disk, suddenly my internal hard disk appeared.
It worked, and now I'm using Leopard. I don't know if it's a workaround, but it was a lot better than deleting everything off of my computer, installing the new system, and copying it all back onto my internal hard disk.
I hope someone else will find out that this works for them...

  • How to install a clean install with leopard upgrade DVD!

Does somebody know how to do an clean install with a Leopard upgrade DVD?
I bought my MacBook for 1 week ago, and them said that i would get leopard sent later. And when i get it, its a upgrade cd that i cant install only leopard on my ny frsh hard-drive. *** apple?

First, there is no such thing as a "clean install" option in OS X. But the "cleanest" install is to start with a reformatted drive (using Disk Utility's "Partition" tab), followed by an install of the OS that will be cleansed of any traces of OS or file system corruption. (The "unclean" options, "Upgrade" & "Archive & Install" won't be possible, & the erase part of "Erase & Install" is at this point redundant.)
However, if you use Setup Assistant (which runs after rebooting) or Migration Assistant to bring over copies of old system components, applications, & settings, you may be reintroducing something "unclean" from the old versions.
This said, if your up-to-date disk is just an updater (nobody seems to know yet), you can do a "cleanest possible" install by following the above with your original Tiger Installer disk, letting it reboot & not importing anything during setup, & then following the instructions supplied with the up-to-date disk to upgrade. At this point, you may want to clone the startup disk for future reference, before adding back in your apps & user files by whatever method(s) you chose.

  • Leopard Upgrade DVD unusable - Not readable

    Hello everybody,
I can't install Leopard on my brand new Macbook Pro.
I bought this upgrade DVD on Apple.com for $10. I purchased my Macbook Pro on October.
Each time I insert the DVD in the laptop, the computer tries to read it, but fails. No icon appear on the desktop. After a minute or so, the DVD is automatically ejected.
Can Apple send me another Leopard Upgrade DVD ? Or exchange it ?
    Thank you.

    Hi gobolino28-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
Problems have been reported with some installation DVDs. Is it safe to assume that you can read other DVDs?
You must contact Apple in France regarding an exchange. All I can offer is this starting point: Contacting Apple for Support and Service

  • Reinstalling using the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD?

This may be a stupid question, but I need to reinstall my Mac, however I only have the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD that was shipped to me since I the leopard dvd is stuffed somewhere in the back cupboard that I can't find for love nor money.
Can I erase the hard drive and perform a clean installation from the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD? I've a feeling that I can't but just wanted to confirm.
    Thanks!

    Hi thelongmile;
If it is the upgrade DVD then you can't.

  • Is it legal to buy a Leopard-Upgrade DVD?

I've seen lots of upgrade-dvds from Tiger to Leopard on ebay, but do not know if it's legal to buy those. Does anybody know this?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
I personally would not buy a Leopard DVD from eBay (read another post about someone who bought one that was scratched and thereby useless) but if it's not a full install DVD it probably will not work.
It might also be a scam: Someone selling the Tiger-to-Leopard DVDs that came out last last year, or possibly an "Up-to-date" upgrade disk.
I would also be very suspicious that they are not copies. Do they come with a real License?
And why would someone be selling it? They are certainly cheap enough from a legit dealer like Amazon. Saving a few dollars may actually result in losing a lot of dollars if your disk is defective.
Upgrade CDs are only for the hardware of the machine that they came with. They will most likely not work on another machine.
I am not sure it is legal unless you know how and why this disk is being sold. Was the other machine decommissioned?
Buy from a legit Apple outlet and be sure and know you have a product with a full warrantee.

  • Get new restore disks if Mac shipped with 10.4.x and Leopard upgrade DVD?

    Hi,
I am new to the forum and I have searched the topics for quite some time but have not quite found an answer so please forgive any redundancy.
I have a 9 month old MacBook Pro which shipped with a Leopard upgrade disk. I have tried to do a clean install using the 10.4 disk and then the upgrade disk again but I keep getting an error on install saying the disk is corrupted. I think it may have been scratched.
I am wondering if there is a way to get a Leopard restore disk without purchasing a retail Leopard? When I called Apple the lady said she did not know and they would call me back in 48 hrs. I have not heard yet and am wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Thank you very much!

    Hi,
Thanks for your response. I have tried repartitioning and zeroing the drive and I ran my TechTools Pro drive checker (which also repairs) to make sure it was not the drive. I am sure it means the disk and not the HD as well. I was hoping not to have to buy Leopard. One would think that if Apple already gave you Leopard once they should be able to give you newer restore disks. Anyway thank you very much for your input. If there are any other ideas I am all ears. Thank you!
Sometimes a copy of a disk is "better" than a scratched or damaged original.
You might copy the install disk. Copying reads and rereads marginal areas on disks and sometimes results in a disk that works when the original does not.
    It's worth a try.

  • Unable to read/write CDs/DVDs

I have a Sony DVD RW DW-U10A combo drive. I have been unable to write CDs for a few weeks now, but manage with my MacBook. Now however, the drive in the iMac doesn't see either blank or written CDs, or professionally produced CDs. This also applies to all DVDs.
The only, but major, change that I have made is to upgrade to Tiger. I cannot categorically link the problem with the upgrade.
Could this be the cause of the problem? What can I do to be able to read/write CDs while using Tiger?
How can I clean the CD lense if that is also contributing to the problem?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi All,
I reformatted my drive and installed TIger from the disks that came with my computer. I then tried to upgrade to Leopard with the upgrade disk that apple send me shortly after I bought my computer, but it says the disk is dirty or scratched. Is there anyway to get a new disk?? I sold this computer in order to get a new Macbook Pro and need to send it out.
I'm going to the apple store tomorrow, would they be able to replace it?
    Thank You,

    Welcome to the Apple boards.
The error "Scratched or dirty" is a catch-all and may not always be correct.
They should replace the scratched disk. They may charge you a nominal fee, since the disk is used and once worked. There is a chance that your optical drive scratched it, or that the problem is not the disk but the drive itself. Be sure your drive can read DVDs as well as CDs.
I would bring both the computer and the disk to Apple just in case.
You might also try cleaning the disk. Wipe it radially (never circumferentially) with a damp soft lintless cloth and let it dry. Then see if it works.

  • Macbook Pro Superdrive damaged Leopard Install DVD

I purchased OS X Leopard recently and after backing up my data, I did an upgrade installation of Leopard and during the disk verification, the Superdrive emitted a strange buzzing noise and a minute later I received an "Installed Failed" error screen and was prompted to reboot. I rebooted and ejected my Leopard DVD and found a ring of scratches toward the center diameter of the DVD. I decided to try the installation again and skipped the disk verification. It installed Leopard successfully but when I went into the OS and tried to preform certain functions or open certain apps, the Macbook Pro would either freeze, or I'll get the grayed out screen telling me to hold the power button. After that frustration, I just did a HD wipe and did a clean install of 10.4 Tiger. I wish to install Leopard and I also fear my Superdrive failing on me again (since then, I've only had one other disc scratching issue).
If I have to get my superdrive replaced, would I get a replacement Leopard DVD?

    Call & ask Apple.

  • MacBook Pro crashes after Leopard upgrade

Since upgrading to Leopard my MacBook Pro now runs at least 3 times slow than with Tiger.
Also Safari crashes like mad, almost every web site I visit it crashes (6 attempts to write this).
Plus if you try and search online ebay, istockphoto, click in the search bar then the pin wheel appears and Safari crashes!
I've also noticed how much more frequent the Mac now crashes almost like it's in a crashing competition with an under-powered Vista machine.
I think I will try a clean install to see if that makes a difference, if not it'll be back to Tiger and the land of not crashing every 10 mins.

As there is no "clean install" option, I can only guess you mean an erase and install:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
The crashing may be do to installed third party applications which aren't compatible with 10.5, permissions which are in need of repair, or insufficient disc space, or third party widgets which aren't compatible, or possibly RAM which has gone bad.

  • Macbook Pro Installing Snow Leopard without DVDs

I want to install a SSD into my MacBook Pro (mid-2010).  So, after I install the new SSD, I need to reinstall my OS (Snow Leopard).  But the internal DVD player is broken.  I have an external DVD player, but I am afraid the Mac will not recognize it because when I plug the external DVD player to the mac with USB cable, there will be no operating system on the mac.  Am I just worried too much?  Can I just install OS x from an external DVD player?
Please someone answer this question.  Thank you,

Can't you temporarily install the SSD in an external enclosure and install the OS onto it that way, while you still have a bootable drive in the computer? After you verify that it works, you can install it in the MBP.
