MacBook Unibody (late 2008): audio + video to HDTV

Have a MacBook Unibody (late 2008), and after reading forums, purchased a miniDP -> HDMI cable as well as a miniToslink to Toslink cable (3.5mm jack to Digital Audio Output).  Video works fine, but unfortunately, even with the red LEDs shining bright, no sound comes through to my 2009 Samsung HDTV.
In preference -> sound -> output, digital out / digital optical-out port is selected, but it does also say "the selected device has no output controls."  iTunes music does not play with the Toslink cable in but will resume after the cable is removed.
Is it a setting on my MacBook or Samsung TV that I need to adjust?  Is it a specific HDMI port I need to use with the Digital Audio Output (Optical) line to audio in sound (no number appears)?
Really appreicate any insight you might have!

I was going to do the same thing then after reading my TV manual I realized that the Digital Audio on the TV was an OUT not an INPUT. In other words it is used to connect your TV to sound system for a better experience. Not a digital input from a connect device.
Check your manual and see what the function of that plug on your TV is for. If it is for both INPUT and OUTPUT then there must be an audio setting.
Cheers,
Andrew

I have done some research on line and I have the following questions:
    RAM
    1) What is the maximum RAM my mac can take without causing problems. Apple mentions that the maximum RAM is 4GB (2 x 2GB) but I have seen mentioned in threats that up to 8GB have been installed.
    2) The RAM quoted in the specs from apple is DDR3 PC3-8500/DDR3-1066. Could I use a faster chip such as DDR3 PC3-10600/DDR3-1333 or is this upgrade not advisable.
    Hard Drive
    1) Is there a limit to the maximum capacity re hard drive. The maximum apple used to offer this model was 320GB. I would ideally would like to go up to 500GB to 1TB.
    2) The specs of my existing drive are: 160GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive. Could I get a faster disk, say 7200 rpm to increase performance and will this have any significant impact on battery life and heat?
Further more any recommendations in terms of any of the above welcome.
A lot of information but I wanted to offer all the info needed for meaningful advice.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Christos77,
I also have a late 2008 13 inch unibody MacBook - mine has the 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a 250GB Toshiba hard drive.  At the beginning of January I upgraded my RAM from the original 2GB to 8GB from OWC and it made an enormous difference to the functionality of my machine.  In fact, it turned it from being almost unusable to working in a reasonable way.
The recent death of my Time Capsule has prompted me to re-think my setup and, basically, what I need is a drive with greater capacity than my original Toshiba 250GB that the MacBook shipped with.  I'm currently working with only 11.65GB of Available disk space so I need to do something pretty quickly.
I've been researching over the past couple of days and decided that my need for storage is greater than my need for speed so I've decided to replace my existing HDD with a new HDD instead of going down the OWC 'Data Doubler' route.
I, too, thought that the 750GB WD Scorpio Black 7200 rpm drive would be the best (and most cost-effective) solution but I've read reports from some users that it was either noisy and/or hot.  However, none of these comments came from users with a late 2008 MacBook.
I would be very grateful if you could confirm that, after almost twelve months, you're still happy with your WD Scorpio Black drive in your late 2008 MacBook?
One last question ... when you now check the Serial ATA details in the  System  Report, does it still show your new WD hard drive having a 'Negotiated Link Speed' of 1.5 GB or is it now SATA 2 (i.e. 3GB)?
    Many thanks for your help.
    Cheers
    Tricia
BTW I've been running OS X 10.7.x on my system since it came out - no problems at all with it - am thinking of upgrading to 10.8 because I've read that it takes a little less space and is more efficient in memory management - but will have to check a few more things first before I decide to do that!

  • OS X Yosemite on Macbook Unibody late 2008

    Hi Good People
When i install OS X Yosemite i have something annoying me after install it.
    Macbook Unibody 2GHz RAM 8GB 1333MHz HD 500GB
    1. iTunes goes to delay when i play on bluetooth speaker, and much much delay when Safari also open (just open, not in browsing),
    2. all video Player also delay, voice with video isn't syncronize.. i use VLC, Quicktime, all format video, any MB or GB size of video.
    3. after turn on my Mac, why is slow response ( when i open application folder on dock, then i scrolling up and down delay too)
BUT, if i restart my mac then do PRAM twice, everything is normal and work fast then before..
are Processor on my mac is not on requirements?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • MacBook Pro Unibody (late 2008) crash when using GeForce 9600M GT

Every time I do heavy 3D rendering or play 3D games (such World of Warcraft) with the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, after few minutes my MacBook Pro (unibody, late 2008) freezes, black screen and audio looping, no actions possibile, only hard shutdown... No problems with the 9400M.
What should I do? Get a replacement?

I've had mine for a little less than two months and I noticed the overheating shortly after I got it. I think it's mostly because the fans don't spin up soon enough because the SMC controller on mine does not work properly and even if you reset it, it reverts back to only spinning the fans after a cpu/gpu temps over 90 degrees Celsius (almost boiling point!).
Mine is currently in for service but I'm being told that they haven't been able to duplicate the issue so I don't understand what method of testing they are using. I hope they don't keep my computer in repair for a long time. I know that if I fire up the Black & White 2 Demo, Call of Duty 4, or Spore and play for about 10-20 minutes the computer crashes if the fans don't spin up... Apple released a firmware update for the SMC controller but it doesn't apply to my model which is a MacBookPro 5,1 , maybe Apple doesn't realize yet how widespread the fan problem even on the late 2008 model is but it needs to be resolved and a third party utility to control the fans should not be necessary on the finest laptops available on the market. I'm confident that they will come up with something...

  • Audio Issues with MacBook Pro (Late 2008)

I am seeing an occasional issue with my MacBook Pro (Late 2008). The Audio will go out... and instead you will just hear static-like clicking sounds when and audio even happens. For example... when you have the up/down volume notification on... and you change the audio volume.. you hear clicks. Or... when you open up a file that has audio.. you will hear the static-like click when the audio starts to try to play.
The work around per-se is to completely shutdown and turn the notebook back on. A simple restart does not seem to fix it... it looks like the system needs to have a bit of energy drain first. Which... worries me that this is a hardware issue and not a driver issue.
Wondering how many others are seeing this???

I went to and Apple Support Center last week and I asked some questions about audio because my MBP was having troubles too. The tech told me audio issues are very frequent on these machines and sometimes you have to change a part of the soundcard. He also added you have to bring the MBP to a support center if you're having the problem several times - in my case I'm waiting the next "crash" since I had only 2 issues so far... If you're under warranty go for a check up and see if it really needs assistance. Goodbye

  • Macbook pro late 2008 (unibody) backlight not working, trackpad issue

    Hi,
My wife is running 10.7.4 (Lion) on a MacBook Pro late 2008, first gen unibody. There is two issue with her computer.
The first issue is that the backlight keyboard is not working correctly. In fact, it is not working at all. My assumption is that it stopped working when it had a a display assembly replacement in 2010. My wife not behing to technical realized she did not had this feature when I bought a MBA 13" last year. It could be something with the system (OS) but I'm pretty sure it is not. I open the back of the case to see if something (a missing wire connectivity) could be found, but none step to my eyes. I did not want to dismantle everything in case I'll be making it worst!
The second issue is the trackpad. She told me many times that her mouse was not working as expected, and when I looked at, I finally found that the problem was not the mouse, but the trackpad. What I found is that the trackpad button, sometimes, stayed pressed. If that happen, eventually, the mouse is acting very trangely! My wife never uses the trackpad, so I can't figure out it is an abuse of it. To temporaly resolve the issue, I dissabled the trackpad when a mouse is connected in the Universal access system pref.
I plan to have it send to the Apple store next time I go near one. The Apple Care is expired...
    My questions are:
any idea of what may be the problem and is it repairable easily by myself?
Could it be that the trackpad is broken in anyway?
Could it be possible that the technician forgot to reconnect a cable near the keyboard (under the motherboard) that prevent the backlight to work?
    Thanks

  • Bootcamp 3.1 Macbook Pro 15 Unibody Late 2008 fans working now?

I just upgraded bootcamp to 3.1 on my macbook pro 15 unibody late 2008. I ran Windows Experience Index under win7 Pro 64bit and the fans were humming loud and clear during the test which is a good sign. It runs about the same as when using 9600 in Leopard (very warm). Two finger right click is still a little sketchy, but at least I won't be using my macbook as a frying pan any time soon.

Resetting SMC could solve the problem.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
And you need to install more RAM, I think.

  • MacBook Pro Late 2008 (Unibody) doesn't boot

    Hello,
my good old MacBook Pro Late 2008 running Mountain Lion won't boot anymore. The sleep light does not light on, the green battery status indicator light is showing that the battery is full. I had this problem two or three times, and usually my Macbook comes magically back to life after one or two days.
At the Apple store they said I'd have to make a SMC reset, and when they did it in the store, it worked. But it doesn't work for me (and I am sure I am doing the same thing, so maybe the Apple guy was just lucky – or is there another special trick?). What could be the solution to my problem?
Unfortunately, I can't really tell the exact specifications, but it is the standard model, and I didn't change anything since. I just had the problem that it was getting really hot like half a year ago, but then I cleaned the fans and since then it was running rather fine (just sometimes froze).
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Julian

I've got the same, or almost the same problem on a MBP 2008 (late).
MBP 15.4/2.53/2X2GB/320/SD/512VRAM upgraded to 8 GB 1067 DDR3 (OWC memory)
In my case the computer works fine when I'm able to get it on. If it is turned off and the MagSafe charger disconnected then left that way for a few hours, and the MagSafe is re-connected, let it charge for a bit, it can often be turned on via the power button. HOWEVER, .....
If it is left OFF overnight (Apple > Shut Down .... ), and the backlit keyboard goes dark, then a little pause before closing the lid, and left overnight, it will usually not be able to be turned on. The battery is in reasonably good condition (~+3500 mAh) and the newer battery (~ guess +5000 or more mAh) it doesn't do any better, and it won't turn on. Cycle count 183.
Take the battery out, (disconnect the MagSafe first! Never have the MagSafe charging without a batter in the computer) wait half a minute, reinstall battery (I like the 5,1 because the back section can be easily removed to access the battery and the hard drive), attach the MagSafe charger then wait a bit (few minutes), and the computer can often be turned on the first time. If not the first time then repeat the process. Tried hitting the Power button with the battery off but that doesn't seem to change anything.
Erased the HD (Hard Drive) and reinstalled Yosemite, have Fire Vault turned off, did a Utilities (Cmd + r ) check of the hardware (no problems), also did a few other tests - no problems. PRAM reset. Investigated BONJOUR - haven't gone into the Terminal yet. Would be nice to disable Bonjour without disabling DNS. https://www.apple.com/support/bonjour/ and http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/151485/how-do-i-disable-bonjour-visibil ity-after-yosemite-install and http://forums.obdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6106
The Genius Bar tested it and couldn't find a problem. Suggested the Logic Board be replaced and that i$ expen$ive! I've investigated having the Logic Board repaired and that would cost around $150 + shipping. Won't do the oven trick. Other problem sources I've come across is the graphics chip (mainly on the 2008 (early) MBPs.
Since erasing and reinstalling OS X Yosemite the computer really screams but I've started to reinstall some of the applications (FCPX & Motion), Documents, and Movie files. Still screams though! Nothing like a real cleaning of the hard drive. Didn't do a Time Capsule-type backup because I wanted to minimize "junk". The CanoScan LiDE 90 scanner won't work because Canon won't come up with a driver to work with Yosemite. Won't buy a Canon scanner again and didn't want to buy it to begin with due to a previous Canon problem. Bought a new Canon camcorder, $1,600 + tax, back when they had mini-tapes, it at the Maxwell tape but just outside the warranty period and wanted something around $500 to fix it. Turned out that was a typical problem.
Really running out of options and ideas at this point. Hate to send it off to repair the Logic Board. Still looking for a software or setting fix.

  • My macbook pro (late 2008) shuts down but battery is at 25-30%

My macbook pro (late 2008) shuts down but battery is at 25-30% and I don't get a low power warning box before this happens.  This only happens when the power chord is not connected, and it restarts with no problems once I put the power chord in. Does this mean I need a new battery, or is it an indication of something else? Using osx 10.5.8

Mine is Unibody 15" MBP late 2008, with the exact problem as yours. It can be a sudden shut down at 25-32%, or, after upgrading to OS 10.7.2, can be hang all of sudden on battery power.
Condition on, "Replace Soon". From 4.5 - 6 hours when new, goes down to 1 - 2 hours on discrete graphics.
But after 'abusing' it for the first year in the heat of Jakarta's climate in a non AC room when doing a video editing, before moving back to a comfort AC room at home sweet home, the battery performance is still top notch comparing to other kind than Apple. Also, it caused me to replace the right fan, after a lot of hard work on that first year. Oh, and by the way, I regularly done the battery calibration, at least once or twice between 3-6 months.

  • Macbook Pro Late 2008 Boot Issue

    Hello All!
So I have an issue i would like to throw into the ring and see if I get any responses I have not thought of yet. Let me give you a quick backstory to my recent macbook adventures.... I will start with a quick prelude story.
    Chapter One:
Purchased a used Macbook Pro, Late 2008 2.53ghz, 4gb DDR3 ram with no charger off ebay. And yes, I should know better. But honestly, it only had a cracked screen but still worked perfectly connected to an external monitor and i could not pass on the price of it.
    Chapter Two:
After recieving my purchase, I determined that it was just a cracked cover over the LCD screen which is easily replaced, but the backlight was out on the LCD. So i ordered a new LCD. The new LCD did not fix my issue, which then pointed me to a problem on the motherboard. I then sent it out and had it repaired.
    Chapter Three:
Upon recieving my newly repaired macbook, I installed a new SSD drive, battery and replaced the screen cover for the newly installed LCD. It looks Fantastic if I do say so myself! I then proceded to install lion and I have a perfect running Macbook Pro for less than 700 bucks after all was said and done.
    Chapter Four:
Now, at this point you should know why I bought it... I use it for djing. That is it. There is nothing else on this. No apps, programs, or scripts. It has an updated lion OS on it and my serato itch Djing software. There isnt even any music on it as i store that on an external 3T WD elements drive. (I only installed an 80gb SSD for the OS system). Unfortunately i have had some instances where the Mac Pro has just shut down completely while im spinning! Not good for business!
    Chapter Five:
Over the course of the last year I have noticed some things happening. Longer than normal boot times (especially since it has an SSD in it this seems wierd to me) and crashing of the Itch software while trying to analyze music or just not closing itch at all when im done playing a show and having to press and hold the power button to turn off the mac. Now for the kicker... Unbeknowst to me, apparently you cant use a 65W charger on a macbook that requires an 85W charger, this i just recently learned. The charger i was using was a 65W from a white 13 inch macbook 2006. I just recently aquired the 85W charger.
This brings us to the present.....
Here is the issue. I was analyzing my music files using itch, when suddenly & randomly one of the 2 analyzing indicators would just stop analyzing the track it was on... This leaves only one analyzer bar going and the other just stuck where it is (16000 songs will take awhile with only one analyzer going). If i stop analyzing and restart it, it picks up where it left off and continues for a bit and stops again, but its never the same track or same length of time before it stops analyzing. Now I have tried this with both Lion and Snow Leopard (the white macbook 2006 has snow) and it appears to happen with either OS.
So I decided to install Snow on my Mac Pro 2008. For some reason, and I dont know why, it would not let me install snow to the partion I made on the drive. The disc would just keep rebooting the Mac pro over and over again. I know for a fact that snow works because I took the drive out of the white Macbook 2006 and put it into the Mac Pro 2008. Booted right up.
So, I have re-installed itch on lion... Still has the same problem with lion.
I have restored a copy of snow to the partioned hard drive of my Mac Pro 2008 from my white macbook 2006. This seems to be the only way to do this if i want snow on my Mac Pro 2008 since it won't boot Snow from disc or USB. Installed a new copy of itch, still the same problem.
So my question is this.... Is it hardware or software?
And to stop those from putting the obvious, I have done all the PVRAM, SMC etc resets!! I am not some 12yr old trying to make daddys computer work again because i used it like i shouldn't have. Im looking for something besides the obvious!
Sorry, but I felt the entire story needed to be told in order to get the responses I'm looking for....
And thanks for taking the time to read about my issues! Hopefully someone can point me in the direction I need to go to get this to stop doing what it's doing. I will be more than happy to answer any and all questions concerning this issue as best I can.

The heat generated may be a function of what you are doing on the Internet.   Watching videos will stress the CPU/GPU and create heat and result in faster fan speeds.
First try a SMC and PRAM resets:

  • Stereo Out Problem with Macbook Aluminium(Late 2008) Debian OS

Hello. I'm using my Macbook Aluminium(Late 2008) with 2 operation systems: Snow Leopard(10.6.8) & Debian Squeeze (6.0.4). I've no problem with OsX side, works fast & great. But I've got a interesting problem with Linux side. Everything works but Stereo Speaker. I realized that my macbook uses only one output(right speaker works, left doesn't), so I can't listen stereo music on Linux side. Debian uses ALSA Audio aoutomaticly. I've already asked Debian forums but noone able to solve my problem, so I decided to ask here with my last hope.
    What I tried:
    1- used ''speaker-test -c 2'' terminal code & I've seen this message
    speaker-test 1.0.23
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2048 to 8192
Period size range from 1024 to 1024
    Using max buffer size 8192
    Periods = 4
    was set period_size = 1024
    was set buffer_size = 8192
    0 - Front Left
    1 - Front Right
    Time per period = 5.823448
2- Checked Debian's Audio Settings, everything seems normal.
3- Installed Pulse Audio, but it used Alsa base so nothing chanced. In Pulse Volume Control Panel, I saw I've got only Mono Output. But I there is no section for change to stereo.
4- Uninstalled ALSA & installed OSS4 but OSS4 simply doesn't work. So turned back to ALSA.
5- My stereo works only with headphone on Debian.

  • MacBook Pro late 2008 no longer working with Airport Express

    Hi,
since a few days I have big problems with my MacBook Pro (late 2008) and my Airport Express. The MacBook can't find the airport express anymore, even not with the airport utility...
The Airport Express is correctly configured as my Ipod, Blackberry and Dell pc are connecting to it and do have internet access...
I can only manage the Airport Express when I'm directly connected to it with an ethernet cable.
My brother has an airport expreme, I tested it with my MacBook Pro and there it just works fine...
Can anyone help me? Has it something to do with an update for Mac OS X or the firmware from the Airport Express?
    Many thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the response,
    1. I live in Atlanta, close enough to an Apple store. But I just know that going there will probably mean I'll have to get the logic board replaced.
    2. The only thing I noticed before the first USB port started acting funny was that my battery status changed to "Service Battery". I plan on replacing it this week too.
    3. Nope only difference is that my battery drains kind of fast. After about 3-4 hours of my normal usuage with it (Internet, music, videos, and sometimes using Logic) it will be time to hook up the charger.
Would replacing the battery do anything? I'm not thinking it would but figure it'd be worth a shot since I've got to replace it anyway.
    And to goofyziggy,
I too noticed that most people who had this problem had some version of OSX 10.8.x

  • My macbook pro late 2008 randomly freeze

Hi I recently upgrade my macbook pro Late 2008 by adding a 250 go Crucial SSD drive in the main harddrive spot. I also put a 1 To HDD in the place of the super drive.
Since then, my macbook randomly freeze. I can't see any link to any specific usage. It just happen for no reasons. I had to reboot by holding the power button.
    Thanks for your help!

Hi r.w.p & welcome to the forums...
Some or all of the following may be necessary - try in this order:
    1. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US ). If everything isn't fixed, then continue to follow the steps here including resetting your SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 ) if necessary.
    2. Use Font Book to eliminate all bad and duplicate fonts.
    3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
    4. Reinstall 10.6 using your Snow Leopard install DVD by installing Snow over Snow using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to re-install the.6.1 & .6.2 updates - if you do, then use the combo updater again ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
Still no joy, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.

  • Focusrite Saffire 6 USB (1.1) with Macbook Pro late 2008

    Equipment-
         Macbook Pro Late 2008 w/ Yosemite 10.10.2
         Focusrite Saffire 6 USB (1.1)
The Saffire 6 is a audio interface using USB 1.1 to connect microphones to my Macbook. It has 2 inputs and 4 outputs. I've had this unit for years and has worked fine. I realized today that I haven't used it since upgrading to 10.10 (Yosemite) and wasn't able to get it working. When I try to set it within Sound Preferences, all devices, In and Out, go blank, then come back constantly. It will even change Built-In Mic to "Unknown".
The Saffire website (http://global.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/saffire-6-usb/downloads) lists two different driver choices to use, but one is labeled specifically for 10.8.5. The other just says "Mac". I'm certain my device is USB 1.1. If it were 2.0, I wouldn't need a driver. According to the website, I should use the 2.9 version.
How can I check to see if all previous driver installations are clear?
Is there anything I can check to make this thing work? The Focusrite website (http://us.focusrite.com/answerbase/are-focusrite-products-compatible-with-osx-yo semite) says that the Saffire 6 USB is compatible with Yosemite.
I've emailed Focusrite and I'm hoping between them and this forum, I can get this working again.
    Thanks!!

I've spoken to Focusrite. They had me try a number of things. I tried some of my own things.
    Different USB cable
    Deleted VodBurner device
    Repaired Permissions
    Installed/Uninstalled 3ivx codec
    Reset PRAM
    Performed Safeboot
    Removed Startup items
Growl, Sizeup, Crossover CD Helper, Dropbox
         Disable MagicPrefs from Autostart
Still not able to get it to work. The device will work on an XP computer but I don't have another Mac to try it out on. Any suggestions?

  • Macbook pro late 2008 13 inch won't run 8 gb ram

Hello, I have a question that has been bothering me for a while now.
I bought a 4gb Ram Module at best buy, it is 1066GhZ DDR3 SODIM.H from PNY to upgrade my macbook pro to 8gb of RAM, everything was going well, I got home and opened up my macbook, inserted the module and turned on my mac.
Everything started working fine until I tried to open google chrome, my machine went into a kernel panic and restarted itself.
Being as I am, I decided to wipe my machine and re-install mountain lion (I run it because mavericks slows down my computer) but my machine wouldn't let me install it.
I opened my computer up again, re-installed the 1gb module from the fabric and the computer worked well.
Now, my question is this: Isn't my computer able to run 8 gb in RAM? I already upgraded my firmware and read a bunch about it on the internet and have done everything necessary but my computer won't accept the module!!
I really would like to know what is going on :/
    My specs:
    Macbook pro late 2008 unibody
    Version 10.8.5
H2.4 GHZ Intel core 2 duo processor
    5 gb 1067 MHz DDR3 memory
    Model Identifier: MacBook5,1
    Boot ROM Version: MB51.007D.B03

According to http://mactracker.ca database (free download) the MacBook Pro
13-inch model identifier5.1 you've stated that you have, is Not as you've said.
However, there was a 15-inch with the 5.1 model identifier.
•How to identify MacBook Pro models
Be sure to correctly identify the MacBook Pro model, and then get high quality
RAM of proper specification of known good brand for Apple portables.
Find an Example of correct spec RAM, by model & identifier; display size, build year:

The budget name brands seldom work well in Apple products; they do OK in some
models of old computers or loose-spec PCs. OWC/macsales and crucial.com are
two better known reputable suppliers of upgrade parts for Macs. Be sure to match
the correct part to the exact spec for your computer.
