MacBook Various Problems

Hi, I have a Mid-2007 MacBook that is having some problems.
- Cracking plastic on front palmrest
- Worn trackpad
- Non-functioning Optical drive
It runs OSX 10.6.8 and it's on its last legs. I would like to sell it back to Apple and put that money towards a new MacBook. I also have a Mac Mini 2006 (Refurbished 2008) that I am willing to sell. I have the specs of both below:
MacBook:
- 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- 2 GB 667 MHz RAM
- 320 GB HDD
- Intel GMA 950 Graphics
- 3 hour battery
Mac Mini:
- 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- 2 GB 667 MHz RAM
- 160 GB HDD
- Intel GMA 950 Graphics
They are both very similar in specs, but the Mini is in perfect condition and I have all of the original accessories (Keyboard, Mouse, Power Supply) That I could include with it. If anyone could tell me if I could sell these Macs to Apple and just their general value together. Any help is appreciated!
-Luke

Apple doesn't buy back or trade in old macs. Sell them on ebay.

• Various problems on Macbook Pro

Hello everyone. I know this is a long write up but I would really appreciate any help. I bullet pointed the problems to make it easier to follow. I have a Macbook Pro which I bought in August of 2010. Lately I have had various problems that become very frustrating. Here are the problems:
-The first problem is that when I shut my computer and then reopen it, the wifi display on the top has no bars. When I open up network prefrences, it shows my home wifi as available but when I click it, it says "cannot connect because the connection timed out." I try turning the wifi off and then back on but this doesnt solve the problem. My only resolution is to completely restart my computer. I know it is not my router because all the other computers in the house run fine.
-Another problem is that many times I cannot open firefox. I click on it and it says "Cannot open firefox. The application is already open." but it is not open because I had not opened it the whole time and if I go to force quit, it doesnt even show up in there.
-iTunes will not open up many times also. This error message says "The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occured (13014)."
-If I try to throw something in the trash, an error message pops up saying "An unexpected error occured (-50)." This message also shows up if I try to create a folder.
-Safari will open up with a random page that was viewed earlier, but not the latest page viewed. For example, if i read a couple articles on yahoo, then watch a couple videos on youtube, then go on facebook, and then quit safari, if I open up safari again, one of the yahoo articles will pop up. I disabled that setting that opens up the last viewed page but its not the last viewed page that opens up anyways so thats not problem. Also when I open safari, it wont remember any changes that occured like new bookmarks or any of the history that occured after the site that pops up. Going back to the previous example, when it opens back up on one of the yahoo articles, it wont have the history of the youtube videos or facebook pages that were opened after the yahoo articles.
-Google Chrome will open but it wont go to any websites or anything, just a blank screen.
-When firefox and chrome arent working, safari will open up any page except Apple Help pages. Its as if this problem is keeping me from trying to fix it.
-When 1 of these problems occur, all the others occur. If none of the problems are occuring, the others arent either so I believe the problems all come from one source. Possibly a virus?
I have found online some solutions such as restarting the computer and holding control+command+P+R. This did not work. I brought it into the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store and this is the first time ever I have been dissatisfied with my visit. The guy just told me a possible fix and was done with me in 5 minutes. It would have been more helpful if he actually did the fix and see if it worked. Anyways, he told me to restart and hold Command+R. I had all my music and pictures on a flash drive so I was fine with clearing out everything. So when I did this sunday night, I cleared the hard drive and reinstalled Lion. I was surprised that it actually worked like normal that night. It worked perfectly fine this morning also but when I came back to use it again around 5:00pm, the same problems occured. I will probably end up bringing this back to the Apple Store and I hope this time they take it in and try to fix it. If anybody has any resolution at all, please help. Thank you.

With the Finder active, press the following key combinations, in this order:
Shift-Command-H
Command-3
Command-I
The Info window for your home folder will open. Click the lock icon to authenticate. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you should have read & write access. If not, make it so. Select "Apply to enclosed items" from the action (gear icon) menu.

• GeForce4 Ti4400 - various problems

I have been having various problems with my card.  These include:  Pausing for several seconds (like a lock up) then reverting to vga mode;  complete freeze where I have to reset the computer;  red lines and dots that fill the screen sporadically;  a blank screen appears for 2-3 seconds and then back to normal.
In all cases I have to reboot to correct.  Sometimes rebooting does not help.  The red lines and dots return even on the posting screen.  When this happens Windows/XP doesn't even start.
I have to powerthe machine off and let it sit for awhile and then turn it back on.
I'm using the latest driver from the MSI website:

I have 98SE so I don't know much about XP, but the artifacts you're seeing and the way it sometimes needs to be left off for a while makes it sound almost like it's overheating, because I had similar screwups when I overclocked another vidcard a few years back too much.
Check the fan on the card to see if it's running and make sure it's getting good ventilation (the card might be too close to another card on the board). If you have access to it, some of that cooling spray they have for testing electronics (might check Radio Shack or a PC store) might help show if it's temp-related or not.
And if you're running an overclock utility, try resetting to card defaults for a while. Running it past a certain point will screw it up even if you have it sitting in a freezer for cooling! :^)
Good luck.

• Macbook Battery Problem

Hi all, this is my first post, but something weird happened to my macbook that I have to share with you.
Ok, my Macbook Core Duo 2.0GHz (1st generation) have had no problem during its first and half year. Then I left the notebook sitting at home for one month as I was away on business. Came back, the machine won't start, used AC adaptor and showed the battery not charging, "x" and everything. My warranty expired, so I bought a new battery. Once I got that, it worked fine for almost 7 months.
Another business trip left my macbook for 1 month, I came back, the battery is dead again!!! So I went to apple support and bought another new battery. This time I installed it at home, and it doesn't charge what-so-ever. I tried everything from SMU reset, PMU reset, P-RAM reset. NOTHING WORKED.
So I took a friend's macbook battery to try, and it worked! I can charge that battery with my macbook, and my battery won't charge on his macbook. So scientifically I thought its the battery defect. I went to Apple Care and they say they will replace it for me, but think that it should be my macbook's problem. Must be the Logic Board, I explained why I disagree, and that the battery came with only one LED blinking when I got home to charge, the current was already too low to charge.
Anyways, I was able to buy a second-hand battery really cheap but with limited life-span and use it until my replacement battery returns. Everything seem fine and I can charge it up to 100% although it will only last me 50-mins, still not bad, right?
I was reluctant to completely drain this battery now since I am afraid it will drop to zero and won't recharge like the other ones.
I am using Boot Camp, and Vista as well as OS X. Suddenly today, two days after I bought the 2nd hand battery, I was using Vista to show my friend the battery problem is fixed. But suddenly out of nowhere the battery dropped from 95% charged to 0% in seconds. It shuts down automatically, and the battery was flashing one LED indicating it's dying.
I started back in Mac OS X and found the charger able to recharge, but it fixed at 0% for 20 minutes. I thought I am screwed and went out for a smoke. I came back to see the battery charging back to 5% and then slowly to 10%, and 20%, suddenly it went back to 85% in seconds, and then 100%. I try to unplug it and it seemed fine. I left it on without the adapter for 20 minutes, the battery drain normally, to 70% (it's fine considering the battery was 2nd hand) My friend thought I should try to switch back to Vista to see if the same thing will occur. So I did, and before the Vista screen came up, the macbook blacked out. I checked the battery indicator and it's flashing one LED again!!!
So I switched back to Mac side and re-do the charging, this time it took longer to get back to +90%, I thought this is normal, 'cause I did use the battery longer on the Mac side before switching to Vista for the test.
I thought to myself, why Vista drained my battery, and then I remember the first battery that died on me was about the time I switched the PC side to Vista. Prior to that, the PC side was using XP. The second time it died it was in Vista as well. I also remember I wanted to reduce the size of my PC partition, so I trimmed off unnecessary features like hibernation by (Powercfg -h off). It saved 2G in size but it may be causing some problem to the charging circuit for the Mac-hardware??? Don't know for sure.
So I erased my Vista partition, and re-installed XP. Since then I tried both sides without adaptor, usually for 10-minutes or less, and no sudden dropped to 0% occurred since.
Everything else is working fine with my macbook, except the power features. Right now at least I can charge the battery, but I am always worried about when or IF the battery will dropped off and kill itself.
I am waiting for the replacement battery to return from APPLE, and hopefully when it returns, my Macbook will be able to recognize the DEFAULT low-charge of a new battery. I'm still not sure if my macbook is defective, and if it did killed the first battery replacement they gave me a few days ago. If it did kill a decent battery, will it kill this new replacement as well??
I know for a fact that the reason why the machine won't charge the battery is because the current of the battery has become too low for the machine to be able to charge it. If the current becomes lower, the "X" will occur suggesting that the machine doesn't even recognize it's a battery. But what I want to know is what caused the battery to drop to such a low current if I turned off the macbook during storage.
Sorry for the length of this post, but I have to be clear on all the details if I want help, I suppose. Right now my question is (1) Why is this occuring?? (2) Am I right in assuming that by removing Vista with XP, the problem will not repeat?? (3) Is it likely for any new or 2nd hand functioning battery to drop to the state of the other battery any time soon?? (4) Am I doing proper care for my Macbook, and what should I do in the future to avoid the same problem from occuring??

gpotts,
Thanks again, here's my battery profile: (keep in mind this is the 2nd hand battery I am profiling) BTW, something happened when I was doing this message, I left the notebook on for about 20 minutes, it dropped from +90% to 48%, macbook prompted me that the battery is running low. I plugged the adaptor and it went back to +95% within minutes...
Good thing is, I haven't seen the sudden drop to 0% ever since I removed Vista, and also I am able to charge my battery everytime I try now, no more "NOT CHARGING" or "X" indication.
Any clues??? Thanks in advance.

• Macbook airport problems linked to battery power?

I too have experienced the macbook/airport problem, specifically since 10.5.8 came back. When I upgraded to 10.5.8, it was so useless that I just reinstalled tiger. Then Snow leopard came out and I upgraded only to experience the same problem but not as severe.
I have just been able to pin/point the problem today (mainly because I just grew so frustrated and spent considerable time trying to figure out). I have tried all the other potential fixes posted on here to no avail (changes airport settings, replacing card, changing dynamic IP to manual, encryption etc).
This is what I have determined and was able to reproduce it:
When macbook is running on power (plugged in):
If battery power is below 60%, connection is spotty - the lower it is, the worst the problem.
If the battery power is above 60%, no problems at all, runs fast and no drops.
When macbook power is not plugged in and running on battery:
Below 60% almost useless
Above 60% spotty and worse as the battery drains
Can anyone else test this out? I've sent Apple an e-mail.

I've gone down to maybe 15% without any noticable difference in connection.

• Macbook wifi problems

I have a 2.1 c2d macbook and a network based around a d-link dsl-g604t. I have the macbook since christmas and it connected perfectly for the first few days but now it won't connect at all and it gives the error code '88001006' and says 'There was an error joining the airport network "the_ether"'. There are also a g4 aluminium powerbook, a g3 powerbook, and a clamshell iBook which all connect to the network fine. Is the macbook the problem and if i change to 10.4.7 will this fix it?

Hi, I had similar problems and eventually the Airport card just disappeared from the system.
At first I thought it was dead but I reset the P-RAM, and it came back.
This is from Apple support:
# Shut down the computer.
# Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
# Turn on the computer.
# Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
# Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
# Release the keys
You can also try holding down the on button til the computer beeps. I did that too, which of the two solved my problem I don't know.
If the above doesn't work it could be a loose antenna on the airport card, check that the antenna is properly fastened (unfortunately, this isn't as easy as on the early macs)
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Airport-Card/519/1
If this doesn't work you probably need a new airport card.
I'd take it in for repairs if you're not comfortable or very able at fiddling about with the internals of a computer.

• Huge MacBook Pro Problem - Please Help!

Okay I have so many problems I don't even know where to begin.
I bought my 13" MacBook Pro in August of 2009. Two days after I got it, it completely stopped working. I took it to an Apple authorized repair shop, who told me I had spilled iced tea all over it and it was ruined, never to be fixed again. Long story short, I took it to a different Apple authorized repair shop, only to find out that the battery had leaked inside of it. When I got the computer back two months later, it would only remain powered on as long as it was connected to the charger. I took it back and had it fixed. All said and done, I finally had a working MacBook Pro in January of 2009. (Although much of the delay had to do with me living hundreds of miles from the repair shop).
Fast forward to July of 2011. Mountain Lion, I believe it was, had been released, and I was going to upgrade from Leopard. I worked in a Museum and my boss said that I could use their DVD of Snow Leopard to upgrade, so I could download Mountain Lion through the App Store, since I was using my computer for work a lot and they had a license. I upgraded and I have had nothing but nightmares since. For the past year and a half, my computer is constantly freezing, applications quit unexpectedly, and if I have more than one tab open and happen to do something safari doesn't agree with, I get a notice that "Webpages are unresponsive. Please click continue to force reload" or something along those lines which then forces every site in all tabs to reload but often just causes safari to crash. Furthermore after Safari crashes when I open it again, I have to leave it for AT LEAST ten minutes before the app becomes responsive. However, if I force quit safari immediately after I open it (post-crash), then open it again - it works fine. Weird, I know.
Now I have some really big problems. My computer is constantly going into a kernel panic, where I get the grey screen informing me to restart (and by constantly, I mean I'm shocked I've been able to type this much and not lost it all to a restart warning). Sometimes when I restart as soon as I log in and get the "you had to restart because of a problem, send a report to apple" dialogue, I immediately have to restart again. Sometimes when I restart, I get the circle/slash and it won't turn on. And lastly now, in the last hour (of which I have had to restart twice), it refuses to boot in anything but safe mode. I'm not holding down the shift key.
Oh and another thing of note - it refuses to open some programs, giving various errors; it refuses to allow me to move around files (error code -50); and it refuses to let me empty the trash (error code -50 again). I'm trying to free up a ton of space on my harddrive but it's proving difficult because of my MacBook's refusal to cooperate.
It's all backed up so I can do what I need to do to fix or alter this situation. My boyfriend wants me to just rescue everything from my harddrive and buy an air, but I'm having a lot of trouble considering that because of the amount of issues I've had with both this computer and my iPhone Bring back the iBook! They were the best.
NOTE: I had to restart my computer twice since I started writing this. Thank goodness for autosave on the apple communities.

Thanks.
This is what I'm getting for my most recent:

• Fake MacBook Pro problems?

It boggles my mind that some of the people here think that others may actually lying about the fact that their computers have problems.
Do you genuinely think people have nothing better to do with their time than to make up fake problems and post about them? What in the world would anyone gain from doing that??
I wish those of you who happen to be lucky enough to have MBPs that work well would stop attacking those people whose don't.
Various Macs and PCs   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Well, I have a fake problem with my MacBook Pro:
I can't see it. I've looked all over my desk, and the thing must be invisible.
It must be quiet, because I can't hear it either. I wonder if the fans are working.
I sure wish I could see it, it would be much easier to use then.
Maybe it would be visible if I purchased one first. That might be the ticket
Just having fun
But, seriously, I've had so much trouble with the two iMac G5's that I used to own (sold them because they spent more time being repaired than being used), that I am just waiting for the design problems to stabilize before jumping in again.
In the mean-time, I'll keep using my old Mac Mini.
I am hoping that the design issues get worked out in the next revision. Hopefully that will be coming out soon.
I did stop in at a local dealership to look over the MacBook Pro that they had on display. I wasn't thoroughly impressed. It was great while it was sleeping, but when I woke it up, it was louder than the iMac G5 with it's fans running at high speed.
And, to clarify, no I'm not one of the ones who wined about the noise from my iMac's fans. I tolerated that. It was the actual hardware failures and dying that I couldn't tolerate.
Anyway, hope they get things stabilized soon. When they get things going smoothly, maybe that MacBook Pro will show up on my desk.

• MacBook charger problem/Issue with charging

I've got the newest revision MacBook and there's a big problem with my charger. First, let me note that I've got the newest battery update, and have recently reset my PRAM and PMU. Inn addition, I've installed the new firmware update, and that has only seemed to make it worse. The trouble is that when I plug the MagSafe into my MacBook, it either:
a) shows me no indication that it the power cord is connected, or;
b) a dim green light appears where there should be a brighter green one that turns orange.
Now, I can sometimes stare at the little prongs coming out of the MagSafe connector to see how to best align the male and female ends. However, this still takes 5-10 minutes to do if it works at all, and the slightest motion disconnects the power. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this a software problem, an issue with the charger, or one with the computer itself? If you need to see pictures to tell, I can post them on flickr and give you a link. By the way, this is bad enough that I am typing on a Windows PC right now, against my will.

I have exactly the same issue.
In when i connect the macbook to the power adapter, there's no bright light showing (only very vague green in the dark) , and it shows in the system profiler that its connected but not charging.
i changed the power adapter but the problem still exist, tried to change the battery as well, but didnt work as well, what is the part which is having a problem in this case?!
By the way also completed al restds (SMC etc).
It is time that Apple provides a solution I figured out is is a common problem.
any solutions?

• Macbook Pro Problems. Please help!

My computer has recently been experiencing some problems. Less than a month ago I had about 5 kernel panics. Suddenly, they went away, but other problems have arose. Finder keeps on relaunching and nearly every program unexpectedly quits. I have no clue why this is happening, please help. I am using a Macbook Pro, 15" screen, 2.33 Ghz, 2 GB RAM.

and, i might add, since it appears he is still running 10.4.8 and may not have done the 10.4.10 update, it would seem to narrow down the problem to possibly bad airport firmware or bad airport driver. something that apple needs to address. i suggest you call appleCare and get a case number started and join the club.

• ICal: various problems

Hello!
I already twice updated my system (lion/mountain lion) hoping for better performance in iCal - without real success.
I am using Googles Calendars, the aim is to synchronize between android phone and macbook pro 13".
I often have the following problems, that espiaccially in an calendar app are really annoying:
-cannot syncronize: the spinning wheel lasts forever, evetually a message pops up.
-deleted entries/double entries: it occured, that some entries showed twice in ical. when i deleted one of them, both were gone in google calendar (without a way to restore them)
-cannot access settings: ical hangs when i press cmd, - i cannot change any settings.
-calendars of friends show notifications in activity center: how can i disable alerts (new in mountain lion) for calendars that are not mine but somebody elses?
these are my main problems that make it really hard for my to use iCal in a productive way, since you always have the feeling: do i have everything? did the system delete something? did it synchronize? and so on. am i making a mistake? do i have to switch to iCloud? (but what about android phone then?)
or could little snitch be the problem?
thank you!
florian

• New macbook pro problem, plz help

hey everyone.i just bought the new macbook pro last week, 15" i7core 2ghz. i am a very serious musician, and im going going to university next year to study music, the whole reason i bought this computer is for recording, all the musicians i know who are serious/professionals use macs. when i first turn on my computer everything is fine, but once i plug my guitar in through my zoom g2.1u pedal, garageband freezes and i have to force quit it, this just started happening within the past 2 days.for the first week i recorded with it fine.  it was also happening yesterday without even plugging in my guitar at all. when this happens the internet also shuts down. when i open safari it doesnt say you are not conncted to the internet, it just has a blank white page. when this happens everything else isnt working right either, everything is slow and laggy. i paid alot of friggin money for this thing and i wanted to keep it clean the only things ive done to it were, i took some mp3, pdf and guitar pro files from my old windows xp onto my mac through a usb stick, downloaded a mp3 from online and set a cool backround as my desktop. I thought macs were supposed to be resilient? or do i just have a defective one. these problems are quite specific but if i cant use garageband/record with my mac theres not a rly a point of me having one.
i hope someone can help me out here.

• My macbook has problems streaming video when using an external monitor

I have a MacBook from 2007.  I have a converter so that the MacBook can be connected to an external monitor, and have connected it to my TV.  This works fine, but if I am streaming videos and trying to watch on the TV, the streaming becomes very choppy, almost like the wireless connection is too slow.  If I unplug the computer from the TV, however, the streaming returns to normal.  I previously connected to a TV with an S-video connection and the problem did not seem as prominent.  Now I am connecting to a HD tv using an HDMI connection.
Any suggestions for how to alleviate this?  I haven't updated or upgraded the memory or RAM, possibly that would help?  Would the amount of files I am storing be causing the problem?  I currently have 50 GB available.
Thanks for any help!
Conor

Make sure your Mac is set to a resolution and frequency that your monitor supports.
The other possibility is that your graphics card is fried, but that seems unlikely since your computer is new. Before too long, you should make sure your graphics card is OK using the Apple Hardware Test, but I'm not sure how reliable that is because it claims that my partially broken graphics card is OK.

• Recently I am having various problems on various pages.

In the last few weeks, I have noticed some odd problems. Some of them are.
On Google, or any other page where I do a search for images, or there are numerous images, the firts few load fine, but most don't load at all. For instance... If I do an image search on Google, the thumbnails for the first 50 or so show fine. Then there are rows of image placeholders with only an occaisonal image displayed. I have tried in other browsers, and both Chrome and IE have no such problems.
Also.
On some sites that require Adobe Flash Player to be installed, I get a window saying I have to download and install it, even though I already have the latest version installed. I have tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling it, but it hasn't fixed the problem.
And on a lot of pages, I am noticing formatting errors when they display.
I also have major issues installing web apps. Lke the Automatic Troubleshooter here, it will not install. I can click the button, but nothign happens.
I have tried doing a complete reinstall of Firefox, as well as all of the various Adibe players, Java, and MS Silverlight. But the problems are only getting worse. And I have already disabled all but the most important plug ins and extensions.
Any help is appreciated.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
Please report back soon.

• MacBook Pro Problems at Start Up: Please Help!!

Hellos and Saluations,
Lads and gents: I first want to say what a brilliant board you all have here. Congrats to the admins and mods for a splendid job!
My new friends, I have a MacBook Pro (Intel) that I purchased a little over 1 year ago. I was still running Tiger when, about 6 weeks ago, upon opening the book, I started getting a gray screen that would stay there for a few seconds, then allowing me to start working. Fast forward to 4 weeks ago. The same thing happened, but it got stuck on the gray screen. The next morning it had the same symptoms, but eventually after messing with the mouse pad it came back on. Unfortunately, today it's doing the same thing, and it's stuck on gray.
Being a noob to this forum doesn't make me a board noob in general. I did some searches on this and have tried a number of things from other thread suggestions.
Things I've tried:
A. At start up, holding the Option, Apple, P, R buttons.
B. At start up, holding the Shift button
C. At start up, holding the C button (this produced an audible sound only)
D. There is no Apple icon on the screen, just gray/blue
E. There is no spinning wheel of death
F. I haven't spilled any liquid on it, nor dropped it
A couple of weeks ago, I took the computer to the Apple store. They ran a stress test and tried to replicate the issue, but couldn't. I was advised that they determined the issue to not be hardware/hard drive related; but that the problem was most likely software based. At this time I took the opportunity to upgrade to Leopard. For a little over a week the book was good to go -- no issues at start up. However, not even a week later, when I returned home from work the issue reared it's ugly head again. After a couple attempts at hard shut downs I gave up. The next morning, same thing except that it eventually came back on...
Fast forward to last night.. the MacBook Pro has been on the gray/bluish/greenish screen for close to 24 hours now. I've tried re-booting several times now; pulling the battery then restarting, restarting in safe mode, letting the battery go completely dead then powering up after plugging it in, etc. NOTHING works...
This really fails. The book is only 14 months old and only used for a couple of hours/day. The "genius" at the Apple store advised me that this issue isn't hardware related, but I'm beginning to think that it's a video card issue, which, if I'm not mistaken, is incorporated into the motherboard -- making it a hardware issue. I'm gonna be hells p!ssed if they tell me it's the video card or the screen. Both will be stoopid expensive and, after only 14 months of light use, very very disappointing to their quality.
Anyways, sorry if this is long winded, but I don't know any other way of explaining..
Thanks in advance for any help that people can provide! Again, great forum too!
Darren

So yea. Just returned from the Apple store. They've deduced that the culprit to this issue is my video card. Whilst they were diagnosing the problem, I let the genius know that this is my first Mac product; that I run an international mail order business with 45 windows based pc's; that this book was somewhat of a trial to determine whether or not we would switch to Mac for our network; that we have a deal with Dell on the table to provide us with all new Dell computers; and finally that, given this catastrophic qc failure, we would more than likely be going with Dell (depending on if Apple was going to take care of me on this or not).
Apparently this got through to the genius, as he advised me that, given the book was only 1 month out of warranty, they would be replacing the motherboard pro-bono. This was greatly appreciated by me (and my company) and we will be in talks with Apple to have them provide us with our new network. This whole ordeal, while somewhat insignificant to the overall day-to-day issues of my life, still had me rather concerned about the quality control, and especially customer service of Apple/Mac. I have a new found positive outlook on their service at this time and will report my dealings on all of the international forums that my company is a prominent member/vendor on.
Last,I will continue to update this as it still offers to add to the comprehensive knowledge base of MacBook issues and Apple customer service.
Darren
