Macbook very slow, Beach ball !!!

I've tried disk repair and alsorts but to no avail.
Is there any way of curing the beachball and speeding up my Mac ?
Thanks

very welcome .  Now how often does the beach ball appear?  You will see it sometimes, but shouldn't see it frequently.  This is why it appears:
"the spinning wait cursor is displayed automatically by the window server when an application cannot handle all of the events it receives. If an application does not respond for about 2 to 4 seconds, the spinning wait cursor appears."

  • 15" Macbook Pro running very slow: Beach ball of death

Hey guys, well i have a 15" macbook pro from 2007 and recently it's been very very slow. Before last night, it ran fine, and had its moments, but right now, i get the beach ball about every few minutes. Don't know what it is, help please! Running 10.6, not sure if it's the hard drive or maybe i just need to update?? Also maybe overheating??  I'm not that tech savy, so make it as simple as possible please:) Thanks

Well, you are stuck then. I think more RAM will help depending on what you do with your Mac. I have 4GB installed.
Here's a Spinning Beachball faq. But you'll need a repair disk, most likely, to get anywhere. The Snow Leopard disk is fairly cheap at Apple Phone Sales.
    What I use....
If you don't have Disk Utility's Disk Repair you'll need a more robust utility to repair it.
I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy.  It also has File System repair now and hard drive S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics.
Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way. But sometimes a badly damaged system can be deemed unrepairable by the installed version, but if booted and repaired from the DW disk it may be repairable. This has happened to me.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. It has repaired every little and big issue I have ever had with my  three Macs.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • 10.6.8 still very slow/beach ball after v1.1

    I have a 17" 2010 macbookpro, 8gb ram, 500gb hdd.
I had previously upgraded to 10.6.8 and experienced a completely locked up system. Ultimately had to reinstall from OS X Disc and patch back to 10.6.7. Everything has worked normally since. I also patched Parallels to address the issue related to 10.6.8. On Saturday while updating other items I inadvertently updated to 10.6.8 again (I know, i know...). At first everything seemed to be operating fine, but now the system is exhibiting the same decline in performance again. After a few minutes of doing any normal activity the system eventually hangs with a beach ball. Rebooting is slow on the blue screen but eventually loads.  I applied the 10.6.8 v1.1 combo update but it does not seem to have had any positive effect. Before I begin the OSX reinstall process all over again, is there any other potential workaround I can try? I'm not prepared to migrate to 10.7 at this point either.
    Thanks

Please boot in safe mode and test. Same problems? After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.)

  • Yosemite slow, Beach ball always spinning when changing windows, doing activities

After upgrading to Yosemite the finder is very slow, when switching programs or selecting items get the spinning beach ball all the time.  Today when using Excel when delete a cell would get spinning beach ball for a few seconds.  On activity monitor seems to be seeing Kernel_task frequently and once in awhile WindowServer.  Kernel_task is allows getting to top on activity monitor.  Any help would be appreciated.

here is the info from EtreCheck.  I have 2 portables which are running fine.  The difference is I have parallels and crash plan installed which are not on the other machines.

  • My MacBook Pro constantly beach balls (freezes) when I start any activity (click open)?

My MacBook Pro constantly beach balls with every activity.
    4.5 years old.
    Version 10.6.8
processor 2.66 GHz intel Core i7
    memory 4 gb 1067 MHz DDR3
Started about a week ago, unusable.
    Just out of its warranty.
    Not particularly computer literate.
    Help please?

I like to clean install the operating system at least once a year. It keeps the machine very 'snappy'. Before I clean install the operating system I make sure that all of my data is backed up.

  • New - Macbook Pro - Running slow, beach ball spinning all the time

I've had my Macbook pro about 3 weeks and the beach ball is constantly spinning and I'm constantly having to force quit programs. Between Mail, Safari, and Aperture. Any ideas?
    Robin

    ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
I've recently had the beach ball appearing every 30 seconds or so and then the Mac totally freezes.
After trying all the suggestions online, the solution that fixed my problem was to reset the SMU. It basically forces the fan to maximum power and cools your mac down. The problems I had were being caused by an overheating Mac, even though it looked like a system software issue!
    The reset the SMU:
    Shut your Mac down.
Unplug the power cable from the back of the mac and any other devices (keyboard, etc).
Leave the mac for at least 10 seconds.
Hold down the power button on the back of the mac.
Keep holding down the power button and re-attach the power cable.
Once the power cable is in place, release the power button.
Now press the power button again to start-up your mac. (You can plug your devices back in now).
You should now hear the fan at maximum levels (it's very noisy!).
If you have the same problem that I had, your mac should start to cool and your mac should start operating preperly again (it may take a few minutes).
If this works, you'll then need to download FAN CONTROL FOR MAC.
It's a control panel that better regulates the temperature of your mac than the standard settings.

  • Imac runs slow  beach ball all the time, imac runs slow  beach ball all the time

can any one help imac runs very slow and every click the beach ball is at hand  is this thing going to crash

    Hi DylanLauren,
From your post I see that your Mac is running slower than it should be.  There are several things that may attribute to this slowness, of which you can find troubleshooting in the article linked to below.
OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly
    Take care,

  • New MacBook Pro is "beach-balling." What's going on?

My 15" Retina MBP w. NVIDIA & 16GB RAM has started lagging in performance, often beach-balling for a few seconds whenever performing simple app and Finder tasks.
Checked Activity Monitor and noticed something I never saw on my 2011 Mac Mini (Lion) when running the same programs -- "kernel_task." It's the largest Memory, CPU and Network user of all the active processes. Another big user of CPU is "sysmond."
What are these processes and could they be the cause? NOTE: I keep my MBP on all the time, hooked to two external monitors. Would this eventually use up resources?

  • 15" i7 Core MacBook Pro + Spinning Beach Balls of Death = What's going on?

As the title suggests, I bought a 15" i7 Core MacBook Pro about 3 weeks ago, but I notice that it has many beach balls (or spinning colored circles) when trying to use applications such as iTunes or Safari on my up to date Mac. Most of the time it happens when I try to open something, but I noticed slow loading times for some applications as well as them being non-responsive to where I have to force quit them (or in iPhoto '11's case, it one time crashed and I had to relaunch).
I did some research, and I found that this issue has affected other Core i7 MacBook Pro and iMac users. I already did a fresh install of Snow Leopard, updated all of my software, and I next am going to run Disk Utility and TechTool Deluxe to see if that will help at all (doubt it will as I still had this problem after running Disk Utility before the fresh install with a temporary improvement before the problems came back).
So, what's going on with my new Mac? I could always bring it into the Apple Store and have the Genius Bar look at it (as it's covered for 3 years under AppleCare), but I wonder if there's something I can do on my end which could perhaps avoid that. Any and all input is appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion, Dale, but the SBBODs come across multiple applications, so it's hard to tell what may be causing it. I can check Activity Monitor the next time I see a SBBOD and see if terminating it helps. I hope it's not (and I don't think it is) a hardware issue as my MBP is only 3 weeks old!
Also, as I think about it, I read on that handy dandy SBBOD FAQ that having the option to put hard disks to sleep whenever possible unchecked to speed up hard drive access time. I also noticed that it stated to do this if I notice lag when accessing a hard drive. I have SBBODs when trying to open a file in programs such as iPhoto, Pages, etc. Also, I notice that programs, iTunes comes to mind, can become non-responsive when trying to do certain things (like using the iTunes store, accessing a different pane like music to iPhone, etc.). Could this be a possible culprit?
Speaking of hardware, I have 4 GB of DDR3 RAM installed. Additionally, I have a Core i7 2.66 GHz processor, just to answer an asked question.

  • Mac Mail Very Slow (Spinning ball)

    Hi -
My Mac Mail has gotten very very slow lately when first opening the app, or returning to the app after a long rest.
The ball starts spinning and it takes about 2-3 mins before I can use mail.
My mail database is very very large.  20GB, so I assume that is part of the problem.  I did rebuild but that didn't seem to help.
Any ideas on how I can handle that, other than dumping my archive?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Quit Mail.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services > Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

  • Running slow ,beach ball, cursor jumping?

Took forever to start up , typing doesn't show till you are well past it. Running like it has a virus.

  • Sharing Preference Pane loading up REALLY slow, beach ball

I'm getting this message in the Console Log:
    System Preferences[431] ### Error:268435460 File:/SourceCache/SharingPref/SharingPref-106/FileSharing.m Line:348
The Sharing Pane will keep on beach balling, for a couple minutes, then when it loads, if I make any changes (uncheck something) it will beach ball again for minutes.
Anyone else been able to solve this?

fresh install of Tiger about 4 days ago, and it started happening yesterday.
I think it might have something to do with "Personal File Sharing" ... since that's the only service on the list that won't turn on.
Each service will turn on, but it just takes a couple minutes after I click on each one for them to turn on.

  • Macbook very slow when estimate time for indexing

    Hello,
Spotlight is often trying to index my macbook. I always see the message "estimate indexing time".
I never see Spotlight actual indexing.
When Spotlight is doing this, my macbook runs extremely slow.
Spotlight is doing this once a day for at least a half hour.
    It's very annoying.
Can somebody help me? I can't imagine this is normal.
    Roy

    Bob -
Was wondering if you can elaborate on your response and perhaps help me? I apologize if I have missed this topic covered elsewhere.
I am using a N-capable Time Capsule and an older model G-speed airport express. My biggest issue is that my wireless speeds are 1.5 download and 1.9 upload when in fact my cable modem pumps out 15! In reading your posts I see that my network is likely dropped down to G due to my old express, and in fact my computer may be running of a spliced version of that if using WDS settings?
I think i'll end up calling apple support at some point but was curious if you can go over the facts of using N and G together, and if i can have my macbook pro speak to my N network only and my iphone 3G speak to G airport express only?
Last piece of info is I use the airport express for my music.... not sure if this means they must be WDS or not? I'm just looking to get my N devices as fast as possible while continuing to use my G express. If you tell me i need to upgrade to a N express I can live with it.... but if i can avoid the $100 and work with what i have...all the better!
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

  • OS X Yosemite has made my MacBook very slow

    Hello all.
The new OS X Yosemite update has made my MacBook (13-inch 2006-2010) really slow. Has anyone else had this problem and how do you resolve it? I would have thought Apple would bring out another update by now to help the slowness it has bought to my Mac but I am still waiting and to be honest, getting very fed up with how slow it is.
    It is a MacBook 13-inch late 2009 (I believe).
    Any help is welcome

    Hello,
Thank you for all your replies.
Linc Davis- I was not using Yosemite before the upgrade I was using which ever operating system was before that and it was running fine.
Etresoft- I have downloaded Etresoft and the results are as follows:
