MacBook very very slow, crashing from time to time

Today I found my mac freezing with safari. So i decided to restart my computer. However, when I did, my mac took quite a while before it started up again. It would stay on each stage for ~5 mins each (white screen apple loading, blue screen, desktop loading). At the blue screen stage, I can see my mouse cursor and I can move the cursor around. At the desktop loading stage, the mouse cursor would change to the rainbow wheel. Opening applications like Mail, Safari and Word would cause my mac to freeze and hang for a while before fully loading it up. I've downloaded programs like Onyx to try and clean up my computer and even tried to follow other forum posts in terms of cleaning up my hard drive like the one where you go into terminal and type diskutil repair Volume.
I've done so myself but I get this message in response:
w47:~ ****$ diskutil repairVolume
Usage: diskutil repairVolume MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
Repair the file system data structure of a volume.
Ownership of the affected disk is required.
w47:~ ****$ diskutil repairVolume /Volumes/"Macintosh HD"
Started filesystem repair on disk0s2 Macintosh HD
Error: -10000: Could not unmount disk
I'm currently at University right now and my macbook disc that i bought my macbook with is at home. I don't have access to an Apple store in my town (aka going in for help at a genius bar).
Bottom line, I'm just wondering is there anything I can do now to fix this problem? I'll probably have to take it in to get it checked out when I have time.

Step one is to repair the HD. Reformatting is normally not required. Reinstalling the OS after the disk passes that repair cycle might be. Additionally, see:

  • Macbook very slow when estimate time for indexing

    Hello,
Spotlight is often trying to index my macbook. I always see the message "estimate indexing time".
I never see Spotlight actual indexing.
When Spotlight is doing this, my macbook runs extremely slow.
Spotlight is doing this once a day for at least a half hour.
    It's very annoying.
Can somebody help me? I can't imagine this is normal.

    Bob -
Was wondering if you can elaborate on your response and perhaps help me? I apologize if I have missed this topic covered elsewhere.
I am using a N-capable Time Capsule and an older model G-speed airport express. My biggest issue is that my wireless speeds are 1.5 download and 1.9 upload when in fact my cable modem pumps out 15! In reading your posts I see that my network is likely dropped down to G due to my old express, and in fact my computer may be running of a spliced version of that if using WDS settings?
I think i'll end up calling apple support at some point but was curious if you can go over the facts of using N and G together, and if i can have my macbook pro speak to my N network only and my iphone 3G speak to G airport express only?
Last piece of info is I use the airport express for my music.... not sure if this means they must be WDS or not? I'm just looking to get my N devices as fast as possible while continuing to use my G express. If you tell me i need to upgrade to a N express I can live with it.... but if i can avoid the $100 and work with what i have...all the better!

  • HT1338 My MacBook Air is very slow. Every time I click the mouse, the spinning wheel appears and remains for up to 30 seconds. Can you help me?

My MacBook Air is very slow. Every time I click the mouse, the spinning wheel appears and remains for up to 30 seconds before the screen changes. This has been happening the past 24 hours. Any ideas?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

One possible solution would be to organise your inbox into folders.
Its never relly good on any system to have one folder that has everything in it.
Try going to you web gui for that mail account and organise your folders and move mails from your inbox into corresponding folders for better organisation.
Several folders containing the same amount of one folder will usually load a little quicker as the folder may not be accessed to download its content unless veiwed.
So having 10 folders with organised content, and you inbox as an area thats to hold only new emails would work much much quicker with imap.
Most imap servers will only update the contents of a folder when its veiwed.

  • New OIF installation - Very slow response from OHS

    Hi,
I've installed two instances of OIF 10.1.4.0.1 in order to create a test configuration to test XASP Attribute Sharing (i.e., we are not doing any other profiles).
Both OIF instances are using a separate instance of Sun Directory Server as its User Data Store, and both are using in-memory for Transient Data Store and have no Federation Data Store. Both OIF instances were installed similarly, using the "BASIC" installation choices, and are running on separate Redhat Linux servers.
The problem that we're seeing is very slow (10+ seconds to 30+ seconds) responses, even when we try to access a static HTML test page that we've placed in the OHS htdocs directory.
We've eliminated any networking problems as possibilities by a couple of tests that we've done, including shutting down the OHS and running a small, different test web server listening on port 7777. When we do that, response time for requests from that web server is almost instantaneous.
We are also seeing the same slow response when we try to access the test HTML page from the same server itself.
We have an SR open with Oracle, but so far, we've not been able to identify what the problem might be, so I'm hoping that perhaps someone else may have encountered this problem and have a resolution.
It is really puzzling because, as I said, this is a pretty vanilla default OIF installation, and it is doubly puzzling because even getting a tiny static HTML page is taking 10+ seconds. Also, I had installed OIF 10.1.4.0.1 on a Windows machine previously, and I don't see this problem on that earlier installation.
If anyone here has any insight into this problem, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi,
I think I was able to temporarily eliminate this slow response problem. I think that the slow response problem is related to another problem that I posted about in the "Application Server - General" forum (see below, and Port 7200 conflict?
    Jim
======= POSTED to Application Server - General forum ============
I think that I was able to temporarily work around this problem, plus another problem that I think is related (see: New OIF installation - Very slow response from OHS
What I did was to just comment out the "include" line for "dms.conf" in the Apache httpd.conf.
Doing that got rid of the "Address already in use" errors I was seeing in Apache error_log and also eliminated the slow response I was seeing from Apache/OHS (see that other post in "Identity Management" forum), BUT I am getting new errors about Apache not being able to find "htdocs/dms/Spy0".
I have the impression that dms is some kind of process monitoring system that Oracle has in 10gAS infrastructure? So, I have some questions:
    1) What's the effect of dms not working?
    2) Is it possible to just disable dms?
I hope that Oracle support can come up with a "real" fix for both problems, but in the meantime, as long as what I did doesn't break anything else besides dms, we can at least test the OIF stuff.

I want to get a new iPhone to replace this defective phone. I am gonna be crazzzzzzzyyyyyyyy with anger,!!!,!,,,!  I takes2 hours to go to Regent street apple stores for three times!!!!!. It is a lot of transport fees !
PLz tell me why! How to deal with it !

Unless it's confirmed officially that your phone is defective, then you can ask for a replacement. Or you have to live with you. However you can trade it for a new one if you don't care the price drop.

You could just disable updates. Change these settings in about:config.
    * app.update.auto - set to false
    * app.update.enabled - set to false
You can still check for updates with the "Check for Updates" button in the About Firefox window, but it will download the update file anyway if there is an update available. You can also check which is the current release from here:

Should I reinstall Safari? Mac OS 10.7.5, Safari 6.05. Safari freezes, crashes, or is very slow much of the time. This is becoming an increasing problem. Firefox works fine. I have a highspeed cable connection. Any help much appeciated.

    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Airport express very slow when extending Time Capsule

I'm trying to help my father solve a networking problem.
For the past several years, I had him using an airport base station and (2) Airport Express units as extenders.
He was using a circa 2004 Powerbook G4 17" and a MacPro Dual Core tower unit.
I finally got him to upgrade the Powerbook to a the new Macbook Pro i7. With the older computer out of the loop, I also upgraded him to Time Capsule.
Everything is installed and running now. However, the network speed in portions of the house where the Express is supplying the signal is very slow. A test on the laptop with DSL Reports gave an average upload speed of about 200.
When I move the laptop right next to the Time Capsule, I got a DSL Report speed of 22,000!
This issue is not laptop specific (it shows up more on the MacPro because it's in a back room), but seems directly related to the speed passing through the Airport Express.
What did I do wrong or do the Express units need to be upgraded (they are on firmware 6.3)?
    Thanks!

  • Very Slow Wireless Over Time Capsule

The background: I set up a Time Capsule for my wife's Mac Pro. It is set on full-time 'N'. And on the Mac Pro, it blazes (She gets wireless downloads of 8,000 to 10,000 kbps).
I have an old Powerbook G4. In order to keep that machine on the internet, I plugged our old Linksys 'G' Router into the back of the Time Machine via ethernet. Worked perfectly. We have two networks in the house one 'N' one 'G'. Both work beautifully.
The Issue: My new iMac arrived today. I immediately connected it to the Time Capsule via wireless and the internet connection was very slow. I then changed the iMac's network to the Linksys 'G' router and suddenly the internet connection was fast.
I did some tests using speakeasy.net (a free on-line speed test). They confirmed my subjective experience. My wireless 'N' Time Machine downloads were around 490kbps. When I connected to the Linksys 'G' router, my download speeds jumped to 11,000+ kbps.
I am perplexed. Since this problem is only on the iMac, not on the Mac Pro, it seems like it must be some setting deep in the bowels of OS X.
One last detail: the only reason I care is that our living room stereo is connected to the Time Machine 'N' network via an airport express. I need to be on that network if I want listen loud.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have a similar problem with the wireless function of my new Time Capsule. I have replaced an older Airport Base Station (802.11b) with a new Time Capsule, moved an Airport Express (802.11g) from Air Tunes use to remote printer use, and added a new Apple TV, all in the same network. I have high speed cable internet service (suitably fast through the old Airport Base Station) to the WAN port of the Time Capsule. My problem is that I am repeatedly having to perform a software "reset" on the Time Capsule in order to keep the wireless internet throughput above dial-up performance speeds. At the same time, speed is not a problem on my iMac, which is attached to the Time Capsule by an ethernet cable. Internet speed is also not a problem on the Apple TV. Performance on the Epson Stylus CX7400 attached to the Airport Express is also very slow, taking 2-10 minutes to print a simple page of text.
I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

  • Very slow transfer to Time Capsule (Ethernet)

I am trying to transfer 80 gb to my Time Capsule (Ethernet) but transfer is very slow (100 kb/s). How can I fix it?

Plug the TC into the Computer by ethernet and make sure the computer shows the link is running at gigabit.. if not replace the cable.
Turn off wireless.. there should be only one data path.. ethernet.
Turn IPv6 to link local only in the computer network setup for ethernet.
