It may not be a good soloution for a novice, but I have been using hosts files to block unwanted URLs for many years with zero disasters and lots of positive results.
As I noted, whenever I find a new "bad" site, I simply add the name to my hosts file. It takes a few seconds and then it's gone forever. I find no difficulty whatsoever.
No, it's not for everyone, which is why I gave no specific details; but for those who are interested and have the desire to learn about these hosts files, it is a very good way to avoid "bad" websites.
I also enjoy the "clean" view of a webpage when there are no ads showing at all. The page loads faster and  the distractions are gone.
I never realized how much junk I am supressing until I got my iPad and saw all those horrid ads that are blocked on my other computers.
Here is a typical result of properly using a hosts file:

  • MacBook virus?

Yes, I know IOS systems don't get viruses but, while using google, I got one of those virus messages that my computer was infected with a virus
and to call a phone number provided to have it removed. Of course I didn't call the number, but once I shut down the MacBook I can't restart it past this screen:
    Thank you for any help!

There is no official call-in support popup in OS X that would take you to an Apple Support
answer to your issue; so whatever you did see, likely would not be helpful. On the other
hand, there are scams that you may find allow untoward and bad access to your Mac and
also give some pretenders access to your personal information. Some want you to pay a
huge fee while they (not Apple) meddle in your computer. Usually they do not fix anything.
You may need to see about starting the computer from an OS X Recovery and run the
OS X Utilities to access Disk Utility, and see if that can repair the hard disk drive. Also
there should be a startup manager so you can choose your installed OS X as boot disc
for the restart. You may also need to check & be certain the icon of Mac HD highlighted
to confirm it is selected as the Startup Volume, in system preferences in the running OS.
Sometimes a faltering Mac can be restarted with the Shift Key held down, so as to get
it to start in SafeBoot, you may have to login to your admin account, then hold Shift key
again until you see a desktop appear. Some users suggest you can let it sit and it may
actually boot into safeboot mode, sometimes this requires you to be there & hold Shift
key down until the actual event occurs. Either way, SafeBoot also tries to repair the
startup volume. Then with the system running (in SafeBoot) you can try & see if the
Disk Utility from Utilities folder (see GO in finder to locate that folder) can repair disk
permissions, and then see if you can get the computer to restart normally.
Be wary of any outside interests that appear in your computer that ask or tell you to
call some phone number, or give up any information, as that may be a wrong turn.
There are several ideas and a wide amount of information to be gained by reading ahead
of issues, some sources are in Apple Support, others in places where users of good
reputation have offered advice online and who also contribute to these ASC discussions.
One of these is TheSafeMac site. Note Tech Guides, there are three. And other stuff, too.
    http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/ - adware, malware, & performance guides
A problem may arise by exposure to adware, from visiting web sites and/or clicking on
links that are compromised; some offer 'free download' implying one item, yet another
may be installed in your Mac. These items are sometimes hard to remove. Some basic
identification, ideas & removal processes are covered in Tech Guide for adware/removal.
Apple support offers this information on general to specific adware, etc removal:
•Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support
There are several items out there which may affect a Mac OS X, but most of them are up
to the user to determine a safe course; the system itself tries to avoid trouble, but a user
may still go to places the system would never go, and get a 'free download' or whatever.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Late 2012, 13'' Retina MacBook Pro, Display bug

Hello, I am having a late 2012, 13'' Retina MacBook Pro(i7, 8Gb). Last year I upgraded to Mavericks. Immediately after upgrading I notice that my MacBook is bit slow. I always keep my OS X up-to-date. Last month I noticed something really strange.
    1. Whenever I manually put my MacBook to sleep by clicking sleep command under the apple logo (top left hand corner of the screen) then the way the display turns off is not normal. I mean its not smooth as it was earlier. I have compared this with the new hardwares (MacBook Pro's) in the apple store.
    2. After I put my notebook to sleep, when I try to wake it up within 5-10/15 mins, the screen flashes very quickly before entering password.
These issues are bugging me a lot. I also have apple care. I called senior adviser and described the issue. I got scared when he mentioned that there might be some issue with my logic board/graphic card.
I also performed Apple Hardware Test by myself and also booked an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar guys but everything came up normal.
Is there any particular test I need to mention to the Genius bar guys to test with there unique hardware checking tool?
Note: I did clean install of OS X couple of times, also did SMC reset & PRAM reset.
Recently I updated with latest OS X update 10.9.4 hoping that this issue will resolve but no luck.
I am wondering whether any of you guys have experienced similar issue or I am the only one. Is it something I should worry about because I still have apple care and if it requires major hardware change then I can easy get it done without paying any $$$$. I know logic boards are pretty expensive.
    Thank you!

The screen glitches that have been most likely when upgrading to 10.9.3 are quick, brief flashes of yellow, pink, etc., light on screens immediately before login. It doesn't sound as if you're having that problem.
If QuickTime won't record the glitches, then it's unlikely to be a problem with your GPU - most likely a screen glitch (if that) or a OS X glitch, nothing related to Flash Player.
However, if I were you, I would take the machine into your local Apple Store and have the techs run some tests. They may want to install OS X anew, so I would make certain that you have a backup before taking your machine into the techs.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Virus? Bug?

I don't know why this is happening but when I go to some sites (i.e. myspace or yahoo) occasionally it moves really slow and then this little drop down window comes out from the top of the browser. It says something about "Your computer may be at risk for viruses" or something like that and then it redirects me to another site and starts to run some faux virus scan on my system and says it ahs a trojan.something.something and a Backdoor.something.something.... I'm worried that there may be something on my computer. Not a virus per say but a bug perhaps and its ******* me off. I want it to go away!

An .exe file is an executable Windows file that cannot work on a Mac.
It cannot force you to download itself, as you can stop a download at any time. And of course you wouldn't try to install it, would you?
    If you're nervous:
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
    http://www.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X. Called DNSChanger Trojan and also known as OSX.RSPlug.A Trojan Horse the software attacks users attempting to play a fake video file.
Upon attempting to play the video, the victim receives the following message:
“Quicktime Player is unable to play movie file.
Please click here to download new version of codec.”
Upon running the installer, the user's DNS records are modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
SecureMac's DNSChanger Removal Tool allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac. A white paper has recently been published on the subject by SubRosaSoft, available here:
    http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
    Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008

  • Macbook Virus protection

I want to get a virus protection just to be safe and i wanted to know which virus protection is best
    1.norton Antivirus
    2.Intego VirusBarrier X5
Also i wanted to know which takes up less space?

Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.
For additional information on viruses, trojans, and spyware visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on viruses and spyware.

  • HDR Interface CS5 MacBook Pro Acknowledged Bug ?

When using the HDR interface the bottom portion of the interface is not visible. The portion containing the OK and Cancel buttons can not be accessed, also only the top half of the negatives are visible in the film strip. I realize that if I hit return after making adjustments it will save or esc will cancel. Question is - How do I get the window (Interface) to fit on my screen ? 15.3 in MacBook Pro , 1440 X 900 resolution.
    Thanks

    Same problem here.
    I have a MBP 13" (1280x800).

  • IMail bug in MacBook Pro Yosemite, et al

I have a MacBook Pro (mid 2012) which has always had bugs in the iMail program.  Things like "sent" mail showing up in "Drafts" as well as showing up in "Sent".  No matter how often I delete them from the Drafts folder they reappear. Over the years I have worked with various Apple Tech Support (levels 1, 2 and 3) and the problem gets resolved for a short time before it reoccurs.  This is getting tiresome.  I am running Yosemite (10.10.1) and it is still happening with the added problem of now having my typing corrupted too.  When I type any word with a possessive " ' " and then an "s" or "t" or "ll",  "d", etc. the curser jumps to the next word and adds the first letter of the next word to the possessive noun.  I have to double space and often move to another section of the text to get out of the corrupted typing loop.  It ONLY happens in iMail and not on any other program such as Pages.
Although I don't want the hassle I am considering re-formatting my external hard drive so that I don't "save" any viruses or bugs/corruptions and then backing up only my photos and music, which are HUGE files to the G-Tech hard drive. Over half my music is from CD's I have personally installed so are not purchased through iTunes.  I need to save them.  Also, I have over 15.000 photos. Then I will back everything else up to iCloud and return my computer to factory settings.  Once done I should be able to restore the music and photos to the MacBook Pro and all hopefully will be in fine working order.
If I do this, will I have all my purchases such as Aperture, etc. or will I lose them?  Will I be able to save my bookmarks and reader pages?
Is this a sensible/feasible way to solve the problem?  If not, can any one please advise.

Please note, I am running Yosemite (10.10.1) not Mountain Lion as marked at the bottom of my post.

  • If 'Verify Disc' states that Mac 'appears to be ok'. Does that mean there are no viruses/bugs on my system?

I had a pop-up on my Macbook Pro (OS X Yosemite) and something downloaded onto my laptop. I did not open it, I simply put it in the trash and emptied my trash. Another pop-up come up from the same website stating that my MacBook was infected and offered to get rid of it (of course, I clicked straight off it).
I checked online at how to check your Macbook for viruses and it said to Verify Disc through Disk Utility, I did it and it completed with one line in green stating "The volume ..... Appears to be ok."
Does this mean that I do not have any viruses or bugs on my laptop?
    Thanks.

No. Repairing/Verifying a disk with Disk Utility does not have a thing to do with malware on the computer.
You are getting phishing scam pop-ups in Safari. Ignore them, don't click on their links or call a telephone number.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, remove adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac, and AdwareMedic. If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.) You might consider adding this Safari extensions: Adblock Plus 1.8.9.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • Macbook acting wierd even after fresh install of OS

i've got a 13" macbook i've had for a couple of years. i've had no problems with it until about a month ago when it started acting weird. it was becoming very slow and crashed regularly when i tried to run simple applications like itunes or safari. even when i tried to shut it down, it sometimes gave me that message on the screen where it informes you to hold down the power button to shut down.
i decided to do a complete re-install of my osx to give it a fresh start. so having re-installed leopard, and with nothing on my hard drive apart from the pro tools and cubase programs i've re-installed (it won't be these as they're both legit programs that i've been using on this mac for 2 years), it still seems to crash and not shut down properly.
i've actually done another clean re-install a couple of days ago to see if this made a difference, but sti ll the same problems.
i was under the impression that any viruses or bugs that we're making my mac act weird would have been wiped when i done a fresh install of my os.
can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong?
    thanks

    It's not a virus.
The screen you see (that requests you to restart your computer) is referred to as a kernel panic; these are often hardware-related.
What you're describing sounds like a possible hard drive failure.
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? Is your computer still under warranty?
Get your data backed up, if you haven't already, just in case!

  • Why does my MacBook Pro 13 freeze with the samsung p2770 monitor?

My MacBook Pro 13 (late 2010) works fine, but when I use the Samsung P2770 external monitor through the DVI port is will suddenly freeze.  The display goes black, the keyboard lights up, and only a hard reset will bring it back.  Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

Try unplugging your charger from your MacBook.  Weird bug but that fixed it for me... Kinda stupid though.

  • Virus Scan for  Windows Viruses on Mac

I am new to discussion group since my Apple Care subscription expired and they don't renew it.
I hope this is the correct Forum for this topic----if not, please advise which of over several thousand threads might it be associated more closely with?
I'm Looking for a virus scanner that will scan windows materials (CD disks with program files on them) while in a MAC 10.3 OSX environment.... (sorry haven't yet updated to either TIger or Leopard 10.4 or 10.5 as of yet).
Can use or buy either an online scanner or resident virus scanner within the Mac. As this discussion group concerns the PowerBook G4 15 inch screen, that is what I chose to post first within.
    Thanks for reading this!

    Hi eww:
Wow! You are correct for most of your assertions and observations...but unfortunately for you, I am employed and live in a PC Windows world that makes no excuses or time for the few (to the IT managers) Apple/Mac users out there. You do have a fan here in those multitude of PC vs. Mac advertisements, which clearly point out the folly of anyone using Windows on a PC.
I am employed by a 21 college University, which, at my last estimate, currently is funding Microsoft to the tune of $42 million dollars a year for its Windows Licenses across the University platforms which are almost 100% Windows based (or mainframe Unix for computer science classes of course). I consistently get emails with unopenable "windat" files and "PowerPoint" "excel" etc files and CD's that are totally unusable in the MAC, and for which I maintained the PC. Currently offline, its a two step dance to get them off line to the MAC and then save to a jump drive and thence recopied over to the PC to be opened there. They will not normally spend college money duplicating 100 page endless documents for the one user who has a "pc" problem, and they are just as enthusiastic about their PC's and Windows and hide any defects under the general phrase "computer or internet system is down---sorry for the inconvenience" broadcast over the old fashioned "telephone answering machine" network we still have functioning after 20 years! Also, unfortunately, after having spent monies for many expensive computer programs and their proprietary methods of "saving" files so that only their program can open and utilize them.....I am not about to buy all "Mac" versions of the programs (if there are any in the same company---usually they are not), or spend the time and money buying brand new Apple created or third party created programs, learn how to use them, and then save to their unique proprietary methods of saving files, all the data and files which are saved now on the PC. That unfortunately is simply not an option. Unfortunately for timing, after investigating those programs that claim to convert the Mac into a "Windows friendly" platform also run afoul of many issues, including the program cost is just the beginning, as now one has to purchase all new versions of the programs to run on a different computer with its new unique CD product key, not to speak of the difficulty of deciding if I go with XP which can run and share the files as they are, or the new VISTA program, which as I've explored this issue with some of the major programs I use and no longer can access right now on the PC---they say that (in typical Microsoft computerspeak) "sorry, but you may find that older programs no longer run in the VISTA environment, so new programs and files may have to be created" (that sentence is a simplified compilation of the programs that I've investigated..... The simplest one to show you this on is the fact I'm a WordPerfect User in a "Word" world. Even the MAC I have has Microsoft's version of Office on it with their terrible Word program on it. Fortunately for me, WordPerfect realizes this is the issue and creates keys that allow one to change the way a file is saved so that those people with Word, or a dozen other word-processing systems can read and correct those files. Unfortunately, that does it for WordPerfect as the other companies I use and have used for years through many versions on the Windows based systems, do not care if their programs would be readable by people using similar systems on a Mac.
But enough about why I still cling to the PC.
You brought up interesting points that I didn't stop to think about when I went searching for AV software that would check up on the Windows based CD for malware, spyware, and viruses. I've installed CD's from reputable companies that have had "issues" where people do insert such spyware etc unknowing to the top bosses into their production of the CD's in order to create havoc and upset the end user. Of course normal AV software on my PC has removed those programs for years. My difficulty is clear now, that I cannot use the older versions of the software as they do not install on my machine anymore with the "larger" Hard Drives and it detects that and refuses to scan for it....which takes care of the pre 2006 versions of the AV software.... Post 2006, AV software, must be "activated" using the internet and updated frequently else the AV software shuts down as a precuation against piracy. Of course turning on and connecting to the internet for even a few minutes of registration invites in to my computer a trojan horse which can do its damage before the AV software has been activated and the "Internet" scanning part of the software activated. I've discussed this problem with the software company at length and they assure me that they never thought of the problem, as most people like myself are installing "upgrades" not from "zero" so the older AV software is kept functioning until its removal is requested by the "Wizard" installing the new one, after confirmation of the CD product key allows for the installation and registration of the software.....I know I know too much details but you did respond to me as if I did not know of the detriments of having a PC and now I've explained the problems that led me to this course of action......its not the patience of a saint, but the business (education) that I'm in and to which Apple did not have enough of a clout when they were choosing which platform will run University-wide several decades ago, so now we are stuck with Microsoft whether we like it or not!
Back to the AV problem and thanks for pointing out that without the ability to download the program into the computer for the AV program to not only check up but eliminate any malware and viruses, the CD is essentially unchanged and would have been inserted into the PC and transferred its virus to the PC (if it did have one, as even a small virus would seriously hamper my continued discussions with these companies as they are searching for a solution, and coming up empty, of course they ask: any new software or viruses, and that I have until today answered "no"....
So therefore I am between a rock and a hard place not having the ability to install a MP3 creation program into the PC, nor being able to use the latest GarageBand with the parts of the program that had "defects" (we don't call them bugs in Mac, of course Mac's don't get things like viruses or bugs I've found out over the years!)...which have been long rectified with the newer iLife and newer Tiger/Leopard operating systems. Unfortunately, that accident and lack of willing and patient people to carry the computer to where the store is located has been the cause of the delay in upgrading...until now its deadline time and too late to do anything about it....
Of course the Garage Band would be updated when I get to have Leopard installed, but as someone here already pointed out, I have to buy from a store not via mail since I would not trust myself to install something on the Mac simply because I do not have the experience installing stuff on the Mac as except for a font program MacFonts, the Mac PowerBook is essentially the way it was when purchased in 2004.
Thanks again for your patience in reading all of this background material---any suggestion from you or anyone would be appreciated as I’m forever barred from posting my question on the Windows help Forums as the price of entry is too high (another “free” installation of the Windows Genuine Advantage” program!)

  • I've been hearing in todays news about a virus that can affect mac computers.  When purchasing my Mac computer I was informed I didn't need virus protection.  What do you advise now?

Currently my mac doesn't have additional virus protection software.  When purchasing my mac 4 years ago I was told it wasn't necessary because it was so rarely needed due to Mac's Encryption etc.  With today's news I hear that it possible the current virus or bug that is out there is aimed at Mac's especially.  What is the advice now?

It's not a virus. It's just the latest scare tactic promulgated by popular media outlets to ensure the uninformed among us remain uninformed. The fact that you (or they) characterized it as a "virus" is proof of that, on its face.
    What is the advice now?
If you are running a web server, apply the patch by downloading it from the GNU project archive. If you don't know what that is, how to obtain it, or how to apply it to your server, then you are not affected and there is nothing you need to do.
Apple announced they are "working to quickly provide a software update for our advanced UNIX users."
There are plenty of bad things that could happen to a system due to existing vulnerabilities, known or unknown. There is no reason for any more concern today than there has ever been. Bash has been included with OS X for years, perhaps since its inception, and the particular flaw that was just discovered may have existed for years prior to that.
Similar vulnerabilities may also be discovered and exploited, now or in the future. The resulting effects, if there are any, cannot be accurately predicted.
    Until then:

Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
