MacBook vs. 12" Powerbook

I currently have a 12" 1.33 Ghz powerbook. I am considering a new MacBook to replace my comp. I want to use my nedw comp to edit video in iMovie (just home video.) Will the MacBook be more capable than my powerbook? I would get at least 1GB of RAM (currently have 768.)
Thanks!!
G4 PowerBook

Having owned both computers, I would say that the MacBook, despite not having a dedicated video card will does just fine for iMovie.
Though it is a bit larger than the PowerBook, it feels just about the right size. I was originally using a MacBook Pro and that thing felt huge by comparison esp when compared to the 12 incher.
I would suggest getting a 2GB of RAM if you can as it has made a somewhat notable difference for me over 1GB.

  • Connecting a MacBook to a PowerBook, just isn't working

    Hello
    Here's what I have:
a new shiny MacBook, OS 10.5.5
an old PowerBook G4 OS 10.3.9
From reading other posts, I've tried to connect the two using an ethernet cable to allow me to transfer stuff from the old to the new, but just no luck.
On the MacBook, in Sharing, I turned on File Sharing and gave everyone Read Write privileges
I turned on Remote Login and allowed access for All users
I turned on Remote Apple Events for all users
Under Network in the system prefs the ethernet is configured using DHCP.
But it says the cable is unplugged - when it isn't.
    Clicking on advanced:
    TCP/IP is configured using DHCP
    Apple Talk is active
Ethernet is configured automatically and there's an ID number.
    On the PowerBook:
    Personal File Sharing is on
    Remote login is on
    Remote Apple events are on
    Firewall is OFF
    Under Network:
Built-in Ethernet shows TCP/IP is configured using DHCP
    Apple Talk is active
    Ethernet is configured automatically
If I try to connect to server and browse there's nothing coming up under the network.
If i try to type in the computer name or IP ID, nothing. It fails to connect.
    I'm stumped.
Can't use migration assistant as the old 'puter doesn't have it. Can't use firewire as the new 'puter doesn't have it! It's all a bit pear shaped.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Happy new year.
    nicole

Thanks. I've tried that and my old computer isn't being found. I've:
connected both old and new computer to my wireless network
opened Migration Assistant on my new machine
    Chosen Transfer from another Mac
And the next screen says "On your other mac, do the following: open Migration Assistant"
Which I can't do because Migration Assistant isn't on the old computer. It's looking for other computers but isn't finding anything.
I'm really stuck by this (which is embarrassing as I'm the techie geek in the family and my sister wants to play with her new 'puter!)
    Thanks

  • Can't boot from external HD with Leopard on MacBook Pro or PowerBook

I can't boot from an external HD with 10.5.5 Leopard on either my MacBook Pro or my PowerBook G4. I had a PowerBook G4 from which I could boot from either an external FW400 drive or an external FW800 drive. At some point, I stopped being able to boot from any HD, but I'm not sure if it was after upgrading to Leopard or not? Recently I just bought a MacBook Pro 15" and transferred all my files over from the PowerBook to the MacBook Pro during the install. However, even with the new computer, still cannot boot from an external drive. I have Leopard 10.5.5 running on both the external HD and the internal HD.
Is this a common problem? Anybody know how to fix it?
    Thanks!

That probably wasn't very clear was it? I have several ext. HD's, some with bootable systems and some just backups. One bootable disk was made with CopyCloner and the other was a clean format and only had an original install of the OS just to use for an emergency boot. They both booted just fine. Then at some point, they stopped being bootable. I have used the Control Panel "Startup" and also used the Option key boot and picked the bootable disk. Neither one boots anymore. It started doing this on the old PowerBook and then also refused to boot on the MacBook Pro. This is not the problem with the HD since it happens with any bootable HD. Something is going on at the system level and it was transfered from the PowerBook to the MacBook.
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • Can I upgrade to the new MacBook Pro from PowerBook copying the hard disk?

I have a Power Book G4 17", now I'm going to buy a new MacBook pro 17" and want to transfer the same software (I mean the whole content of my actual HD) to the new MacBook Pro using SuperDuper!
I want to know if the Intel based MacBook Pro can run the same operating system configured in the PowerBook or I must install first the Mac OSX on the new MacBook pro and then reinstalla manually all the applications/documents?

    Hi Marcello,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
No to both of your questions:
No, you cannot clone the PPC hard disk to a new Intel disk. The systems are completely different.
No, you don't have to reinstall all your software manually.
You have to install Tiger from the install DVD that shipped with that MacBook Pro. You CANNOT use any other install disk, so take care you don't damage it! Once this is done you can transfer all your data, applications and settings from the old computer using the migration assistant in /Applications/Utilities.
Be aware that there might be problems with applications that are not universal binaries and require Rosetta emulation: Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated.

  • MacBook vs. PowerBook G4

I've owned a 12" PowerBook (867 MHz / 640 MB RAM) for a few years. I was perfectly happy with it until I upgraded to Tiger which makes it seem inadequate.
I was wondering how the specs of the 13" MacBook stand-up to the PowerBook I own? I can't find the specs for the laptop I have now. I'm mostly interested because the only way that the MacBook is inferior to the MacBook Pro (in ways that concern me) is in the graphics.
Basically, if the MacBook's graphics are an upgrade compared to what I currently have, I'd be happy.

You are correct, the Macbooks Intel GMA 950 is in fact a downgrade compared to the Geforce FX Go5200 in the 12" Powerbook (for 3D work).
So the only situation you're going to notice the difference is in 3D gaming. Core Image and 2D acceleration will be faster.
Video editing and rendering will be much faster, as will photoshop and any other apps but not some tasks on Motion 2.

  • Wirelessly networking Macbook Pro with Powerbook G4

I have a Macbook Pro, and a Powerbook G4. Both running Tiger. Both connected fine to the internet via Dlink wireless router. But when I click in Macintosh HD -> Network, neither of them show the other in the list. I want to be able to move files between the laptops but I'm a network dummy.
Anyone out there who can help?

Did you turn on file sharing? In the filesharing preference, the name of your computer is listed along with "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: xxxxxx.local"
In one computer, you can go to the other (filesharing = on) by finder > Connect to server yourcomputer.local
Don't feel bad about not seeing them in the "network"; I never saw my computers there either.
You can also go to the network pref pane and go to airport > tcp/ip and look at the number 192.... and enter that. The name should work though.

  • External Drive Mounts on MacBook, not on PowerBook

    Situation:
I own a Powerbook G4, and recently bought a Macbook from a friend, along with a Hitachi Travelstar external hard drive that he used with the Macbook.
When I got the hard drive, I plugged it into my Powerbook and copied some files to and from it, then plugged it into my Macbook and moved some files over to the computer.
I then used the Macbook to format the Hitachi drive.
Now, the drive works perfectly fine with the Macbook, but when I plug it into the Powerbook, it doesn't mount, and makes a slight clicking noise.
I tried plugging it into a different Powerbook, and the same thing happens.
I'm thinking it has something to do with the way the drive was formatted, but I'm not sure of this, and I'd like the advice of you wiser, more experienced users. I'm willing and able to do a reformat of the drive using the Macbook (since I can't format it on the Powerbook), but I need to know what settings I should be using to prevent this from happening again. The drive is intended to be used as a backup media drive, so ownership and permissions shouldn't matter. (I'm not even sure if that's relevant to this problem, but thought I'd mention it anyway)
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
    Joe

If the Powerbook has 10.3.9 or later it shouldn't matter how it was formatted. If it has 10.3.8 or earlier, you have to partition it for Apple Partition Map to be readable on both Intel and PowerPC Mac. Unfortunately as Apple Partition Map, it won't be bootable on an Intel Mac. You can do a dual Apple Partition Map/GUID (the format used by Intel Macs), as documented here:

  • MacBook wireless slow; PowerBook not...

My wife's MacBook is having some weird wireless slowdown issues that I can't isolate. Her MB sits on a desk next to my PowerBook (G4 1Ghz 17inch). We're both connected to the AirPort Extreme (Base Station with no modem - model M8930LL - which is connected to the cable modem) and have the same signal strength. However, my PB loads webpages as fast as it ever has but her MB loads pages incredibly slowly. We're both running 10.4.10 with all the latest relevant patches.
    Anyone got any ideas?

The problem is with the 10.4.10 update - look around the forum here.
I have sitting on my desk in front of me two Macbooks.. Both have 2 gigs of RAM, and both are connected to the same linksys access point. The only difference is that the black Macbook is running 10.4.10 and the white one is running 10.4.9.
Pinging the same machine on the local network, the black Macbook is getting ping rates as slow as 1500-2000ms where the white one is getting 1-2ms.
    Something is definitely wrong here.

  • Mac mini/macbook/mac pro/powerbook ...speed difference ???

    i have a powerbook g4 1 Ghz and i would like to know once for all the difference of speed between my computer;
    1/ and a mac mini
    2/ and a macbook pro 2.5 Ghz
    3/ and a mac pro 8 cores .
    thanx a lot

There are people who have tried to do so, but often they are "synthetic" benchmarks (take with Tequila and grain of salt... )

    http://www.geekpatrol.ca/2006/12/eight-core-mac-pro-benchmarks/
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper.html
A Ferrari won't help much getting to work in the city or for off-road camping, so it really is "speed to DO what?" that people want.
There are even times when 8-cores isn't necessarily the best, some users opt for single 4-core Mac Pro config.
You could be asking for cpu (MHz myth), front side bus, memory bandwidth, floating point, or any number of other factors.

  • Fan use and MacBook Pro vs PowerBook G4

    Hi there
Can anyone give me any idea if the new MacBook Pro (any model) is much louder than the last PBook G4 model. The Fan inside my current PBookG4 (1.67Ghz0 is barely audible. Will I have a jet engine on my lap with normal use?
    Thanks a lot

no...i have a 1G MBP and it harldy makes any noise at all. the only thing i can ever hear is the cd drive spinning a cd or when the mac is accessing the hard drive. it definitely won't sound like a jet engine

  • Migrating FireFox passwords to Macbook Air from powerbook G5

Planning to buy macbook air is possible to migrate saved passwords form firefox using the assistant?

Local backups are just that - local to the computer. When your computer backs up to TimeMachine it saves what has been changed since the last backup - not including caches, etc. and that would include local backups.

  • Migrating from Powerbook G4 to MacBook (late 2008)

Just got a new MacBook. I'm wondering whether I should use Migration Assistant or just copy my old files manually to the new MacBook.
My Powerbook has been through many OS upgrades that I'm thinking I should start "fresh" and just copy old files. I know that I'll have to reinstall all my third-party applications if I go this route. Which may be a good thing since I can then not install apps that I haven't used in a while.
    Questions:
    1. Does it really matter whether I do the migration manually or through the Migration Assistant? i.e., do I really need to start "fresh" without all the "junk" (if there really are any) from all the OS upgrades through the years on my old Powerbook?
    2. Has anyone done a manual migration? If so, perhaps someone can share what they did -- e.g., how you moved things like email (POP), calendar, address book, etc.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I just plugged an ethernet cable from my two notebooks and started the Migration Assistant and it just transferred everything over. Remember to create a temporary user instead of an actual user that has an identical username as on your old system because I have ran into issues.
Only settings and software were migrated. No system software components were moved over for obvious reasons.

  • RAM from Powerbook for Macbook

    I have a Powerbook G4 Ti 15"
Can I use the RAM from it to replace the RAM in my Macbook?
    Andrea

The Powerbook Titanium does have SD-RAM and the Macbook DDR-RAM, you can not exchange them!
    These are the exact specifications:
    Powerbook Titanium:
    PC133 SO-DIMM SD-RAM 133Mhz
    Macbook:
    PC-5300 SO-DIMM DDR2-RAM 667MHz 200 Pin
So it is just not possible! Only way to add more memory in the Macbook is to buy it with exact the specifications i mentioned above! Otherwise it will not work and fit!

  • Replace powerbook G4, 1.5GHz, 15inch with Macbook 2.0 GHz?

    Hi folks,
I'm actually thinking to replace my powerbook G4, 1.5ghz, 15inch,1GB Ram with a macbook 2.0ghz, 1GB Ram. Do you guys think it's a good idea? I don't mind the smaller screen and the less luxury enclosure. What about the difference in performance between the two? And yes, I don't have the money for a macbook pro.
    Powerbook G4, 1.5Ghz, 15inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm using a Macbook right now and I've upgraded from a Powerbook G4 15". I was initially concerned about two things: 1) Display resolution and 2) My ability to use an external monitor.
I have not been disappointed. The Macbook's resolution is very nearly as good as the Powerbook's was, but the screen is so much brighter and clearer that there is simply no contest. Moreover, this Macbook now lets me run an external display with a separate desktop area, which is something I loved about my older Powerbook and was lacking in the iBooks, the predecessor to the Macbook.
I feel the keyboard was better on the Powerbook, but I've adapted well to the Macbook's keyboard and am no longer bothered by it.
Performance wise, there is simply no contest. You will be BLOWN AWAY by the performance you get from a Macbook. But do yourself a favor - you MUST upgrade the RAM beyond the stock 512MB... 1 Gig is the minimum. I'm running 2 Gig and this is easily the fastest computer (desktop or laptop) I've ever owned.
Oh, and I bought the cheapest Macbook at $1099. Add $168 for the 2Gig of memory and you've got one powerful machine.
    I'm in love.

  • Difference between PowerBooks and MacBooks

    Hi there,
I've been looking at the MacBook 2.1GHz new from Apple. A friend who has had quite a lot of experience with Apple computers and laptops mentioned something about the PowerBook (1.something GHz) being better than the MacBook above. Is this correct? I will be using it for internet browsing, word processing, music, videos & movies and a little bit of Photoshop. He said he used one and even though the processor speed is slower on paper- it's overall much better.
Thats just from one person, he could be wrong.
Any advice from an even more experienced person?
    Thanks.
Message was edited by: Im not sure

    I guess it depends. I have both a Macbook, and a PowerBook G4 1.5Ghz 15".
    Specs on the Macbook:
    - 2.16Ghz Core2Duo
    - 3GB RAM
    - 120GB HD
    - 13" Screen
    - OS X 10.5
    Specs on the PowerBook:
    - 1.5Ghz
    - 2GB RAM
    - 80GB HD
    - 15" Screen
    - OS X 10.5
The PowerBook is used at work, the Macbook is my general use personal system. Which do I prefer? The PowerBook. WHAT? Yeah, I said PowerBook. My reasoning? The PowerBook runs plenty fast with Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Coda, Firefox, etc, just like the Macbook. However, I like the 15" Matte finish screen better than the 13" Gloss screen. For work viewing it makes life easier. The USB port placement on the PowerBook is better. There is 1 USB port on the left, 1 on the right, making it easy to plug in 2 devices. On my Macbook, when I plug my USB wireless mouse in, it leaves no room for a USB key, etc.
The aluminum on the PowerBook G4 seems cleaner than that of the Macbook. I got my macbook in October, and my powerbook which I just got was used by faculty at my college since 2005 I believe. Having said that, the PowerBook looks cleaner than the white Macbook. I am not a dirty person, however the color white is just not friendly when it comes to daily use at work and home. Also, the PowerBook is said to come with a backlight keyboard (mine doesn't work however :/ ). Finally, the Macbook's speakers are weak to say the least. They face backwards, and are by no means loud. For DVD viewing, I need to have volume at 100%, however with my PowerBook having it at 75% is just like the Macbook 100%, and the PowerBook has a deeper, richer sound.
And the PowerBook just looks more elegant (like the Macbook Pro). Thats just my 2 cents. I still love both.

  • Macbook can no longer "connect to server"

I have an iMac connected to the new Airport Extreme using ethernet (and wireless).
I have a macbook connecting to the new Airport Extreme using wireless.
The macbook cannot connect to the imac using 'connect to server' WHY? And the imac's itunes library no longer shows up on the macbooks itunes as a shared library? Why?
All of this used to work before my upgrade to the new Airport Extreme. Can anybody help....

    Here's my setup:

Macbook connecting to Airport Extreme via 80211n

Macbook Pro and Powerbook and 2nd Express (relay) connecting to Express via 80211g
iMac also connects to Airport Express via 80211g (in addition to direct ethernet connection)

Macbook and iMac cannot speak to each other. Macbook can see iMac's itunes but gets an error when tyring to connect (unspecified error - make sure port 3689 is open)
Cannot do a 'connect to server' either way between macbook and iMac.
