Macbook vs. Dell

Interesting article pitting the MB against the dell latitude regarding which machine runs hotter.
MB vs Dell
Basically it seems the MB runs just about as hot as the dell does. I think one exhibit shows it 10f hotter then the latitude which isn't that much all things considered.
So (and I include myself here) for everyone who thinks the MB is too hot, that its a design issue, or that other companies don't have hot laptops, here is proof positive.
Mike

...I must
say that my Dell Latitude D620 runs MUCH cooler than
my MacBook did. I can use my Dell for hours on my
lap without feeling any discomfort.
My old three year old D600 ran easily 1/3rd hotter than it does now. It was so hot on the left palm landing zone, than I typed a small pot holder to that location. The left bottom of my Dell, back then, was intolerable. And, just like here, I was rather vocal about it in the Dell forums. Go there, search for ''rymal'' and you'll see what I mean.
Well, after about 1 1/2 years, the Dell D600 started cooling off quite a bit. I have no idea, unless updates put a bit more intelligence in the fan setup.
This Dell D600, in spite of its heat at the time has TWO fans in it. One is by the hard drive, and the other is next to the CPU. Just like the MacBook, there is no intake vent, but there is a rather well-ducted exhaust vent. The intake is coming through the keyboard. The exhaust vent is in the back, below the LCD hinge.
Now, this Dell D600 is rather comfortable to use and quite cool in temperature. I'm hoping Apple can cool the MacBook down just as good, but since its exhaust blows in FRONT of the lower LCD by the hinge, I don't see how.
You Mac newbies also knock Dell and the blowing up notebook. How well, y'all forget things. Several years back, Mac 5300 (????) notebooks had batteries that blew up and some were subject to a recall.
Finally, before thoughts go otherwise, I prefer my MacBook over my Dell any day, but let's keep the criticism factual. The Mac honestly is ill-designed in chassis design for thermal evacuation in that the human will have hot CPU exhaust air blown on the fingers by the function keys. That is where the exhaust is. When that LCD screen lid is opened to an operational angle, the exhaust blows in front of the screen.

Al intentar descargarlo me aparece el mensaje "El sistema OS X Mavericks no se puede instalar en este ordenador.", pero no especifica el motivo concreto.
No hay ningún modo de instalar una version más actualizada de OS X que Snow Leopard en este equipo?

Mavericks requires a MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008) or (13-inch, Early 2009 or later).  Your’s is from 2010 so it should support Mavericks.
Before you attempt to install any version of OS X make sure your disk is healthy and make sure you have a backup.
Run disk diagnostics with Disk Utility.  Look in the Applications/Utilities folder and run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.

Grazie

The fastest way would be Target Disk Mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725
You would need a Firewire cable and an adapter for the retina Macbook.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
Not fast, but perhaps more practical is to use an external hard drive with USB as an intermediary.
    Ciao.

A DVD (mpg file only) comes up on my MacBook and Dell PC but not my iMac.  Aren't all Macs alike?  I was told by a couple of experts to copy the file on my MacBook and then send it to my iMac.  But shouldn't my iMac show it now if my little Mac does?

How do I install iDVD on my iMac os x 10.7.5?
this version is no longer available and it is necessary to write the projects made with iMovie or iPhoto.
If you have an older Mac that came with iDVD preinstalled you can use the Software Install disk that came with it to install iDVD on your new iMac.  It might look like one of these:
If you don't have those disks you'll have to purchase an iLife disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com  to install iDVD.
If you have to purchase an iLife disc remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides iDVD 5-7 themes.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Connecting Macbook to Dell U2312HM Monitor

I'm interested in connecting the Dell U2312HM monitor to my Macbook OS X Version 10.6.8.
How do I do it? What are the parts that I need to buy?
    Thank you.

That monitor has Displayport and DVI ports.   Not knowing your age of MacBook it is hard to say what connector you can use.
Go to System Profiler and lookup your machine identifier.
It should say something like MacBook 4,1.
For these models, you'll need both the cables linked below from Apple and Staples:
MacBook 1,1 through 4,x and 5,2 use a mini-DVI connector and will not directly connect audio to it.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B/apple-mini-dvi-to-dvi-adapter
    http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/StaplesProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catal ogIdentifier=2&partNumber=972599
For these Macs, use the cable linked to below their machine identifer:
5,1 and 6,1 have mini-Displayport connector but no audio directly over it.
    7,1 has audio over mini-Displayport.
    http://www.cablesforless.com/15-Foot-Mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI-Cable-P7063.aspx
USB connectivity on the display may not work, unless you can find a cable that includes USB support with the other ports.  Often dual link connectors have USB cable support, and are more expensive.
Note: If you have an Air or Pro, please specify that as the connectors are different for those models.

i just purchased the newest macbook pro with the thunderbolt port.  i have a Dell 2407 wfp monitor.  looks like a 2008 model according to the serial #....
The monitor has a VGA port and a DVI-D port.
what adaptor should i buy to get the best resolution??  will it work with the thunderbolt port?

ok, and that will plug into the thunderbolt port?  i thought thunderbolt was different than mini display...

  • Connect macbook to dell monitor

I just bought a dell monitor s2240L. When i connected my macbook pro (not retina display) to the monitor with hdmi cable, it doesnt show anything on the monitor. After they are connect with hdmi cable, the monitor went to sleep mode automaticly. I tried to download the driver from the CD it came with but it can only compatible for windows. Can anyone help me?

Does this monitor auto detect the HDMI connection, or do you need to pull up the monitor preference to get it to use the HDMI port?
Does the Mac recognize that an external monitor is connected?

  • MacBook and Dell 1801fp monitor... not agreeing

I have a MacBook running OS 10.4.11 Work bought me a Dell 1801fp and I can't get the monitor to pick anything up. I can see it in my System Preferences. I have tried using the F7 key but no luck. Any suggestions? I'm not expert but I thought I'd be able to get something this simple working.
Please help... I get so tired of all the PC "experts" telling me if I just switched to a PC all would be well with the world.

Are you using DVI? What resolution does that screen default to in System Preferences? Is that a current model Dell monitor - I couldn't find specs for it on Dell's site.
I've used quite a few Dell monitors with Macs, and never had a problem.
If that Dell has both DVI and analog (VGA) inputs, you'll need to push a button on the front of the monitor to tell it which input you're using. I suspect this is your problem.
Note: the F7 key toggles between 'extended desktop' and 'mirrored' modes. With rare exception, you don't want to use mirrored - it's basically for projectors.

  • Run both Macbook and Dell desktop audio?

I just got a macbook...and also have a Dell 8400 desktop with their subwoofer and audio system. Is there some kind of a/b box I can get to plug both the mac and the dell into that will connect to the audio system? ARe there compatibility issues?
    TIA

hey there tmenyc, welome to Discussions
i use an old switch box i puchased @ Radio Shack about 15 years ago to switch between my DP G5 analog out & my HDTV monitor audio out to feed my desktop computer speakers. box uses RCA connections. i think you could use any of several styles of a-v switch box w/ RCA connectors, such as those sold @ Wal-Mart, Target, etc... you just need the proper connecting cables. i can't imagine there would be compatibility issues.... speakers & amps don't really care about OS's.
    good luck.

  • Should I get the 17 inch MacBook Pro, Dell Precision M6600, Lenovo Thinkpad W520, or the HP EliteBook 8760 W

I already own an old MacBook Pro running Core 2 Duo processor and have no problems with it. I was told by my friends not to go with the new Snow Leopard Operating system as they crash often and produce very slow performance. I am not sure if they will resolve all these issues in Lion. I do intensive work on Adobe and Autodesk products and I require an extremely fast processor, best display, and graphics card. If I choose MBP, I will take the anti-glare screen as I also do desktop publishing. I also don't understand why Apple doesn't ship their MacBook Pro's with Nvidia Quadro or ATI FireGL pro graphics cards. I was told that they are better cards for working with Pro apps. Are there any benefits of choosing Quadro or FireGL instead of GeForce or Radeon. I also saw the comments at Apple store and almost all have given the least possible rating to Quadro cards for Mac Pro. I don't wanna spend money unnecessarily if there will be problems with compatibility and I am also considering if I should switch to a PC as Snow Leopard is very slow. I also wonder how the gaming performance is in the Pro GPU's.

Your friends don't know what they're talking about.  SL is quite good...  far better than Leopard in my experience.  The issue is that many people have systems that get screwed up a little bit, and then they install some major update, and suddenly a slightly screwed up system becomes badly screwed up.  (Imagine building a second floor on a house with undiscovered structural defects.)  This is often unfairly blamed on system updates...  if you rely on word of mouth, every version of the Mac OS ever has been the worst ever.
Of course, I've got no experience with Autodesk.  Perhaps Autodesk has issues with SL, if your friends are all using it and having problems.  SL did change a lot under the hood, so older software may be incompatible with it.

  • Setting up new printer with MacBook Pro AND Dell?

Need a printer, want an AIO, any work better than others with MacBook and Dell?  Purchased a HP Officejet 6500A Plus, any problems using both systems togehter?  Also, should I set up the Dell first then the Mac, or viceversa?

Thanks for the help, I'm definitely getting there
I changed the settings as you've described and can now print from my MBP. The 3 Dell laptops are another matter. Would you have any idea what the IP address of the printer would be? Or the AirPort Extreme? I'm following this tutorial:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1004.html
without much success but I'm really guessing at the IP address. I've tried 192.168.1.1 (my router) and 192.168.1.101 (the IPv4 address) with no luck. I suspect it's the IP address that's the problem ...
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
