Macbook vs ibook

I am thinking of upgrading. I am looking at refurbished laptops. I am trying to see what the differences are between the macbooks and ibooks.
I currently am using a very outdated imac. I use the computer for e-mail...shopping..research on various topics...create documents and want to get a little more into graphics.
I have been reading up as to what to buy but am still not sure of the differences between the 2 types of ;aptops.
I am also curious. If these machines come with 10.5 what is the upgrade cost to 10.6 and where do I find info on applecare and its cost? I think this might be a good idea.

The MacBooks are much faster in start-up and all applications. With a MacBook you can start-up, open your browser and load a web page while the iBook is still starting up. The ibooks will work fine if you aren't concerned with speed.
With iBooks you can run 10.5 only on a G4 iBook with a 900Mhz processor or better. You Can't run 10.6 on the iBooks. That requires an Intel processor which is only found on MacBooks. OS10.6 costs $29. For a 10.5 retail disk that will work on any Mac you'll have to go to eBay.
Applecare can only be bought for a MacBook that's less than one year old. It has to be bought before the original one year warrenty expires.

MacBook to iBook - Networking ethernet/firewire/IP/Sharing - This is the problem:
1. Firewire : I setup with firewire a MacBook to iBook IP network hub to use my MacBook over the iBook the net. Works 4 times without a problem, easy to set up, great ! External HD not detected in MacBook but iBook

Hi All:
I have below systems with me >
* iBook G4 running Tiger with 1GB memory
* Previous MacBook running Tiger with 2GB memory
* New MacBook running Leopard with 4GB memory
* New iMac running Leopard with 4GB memory
I have a 100GB external HD connected to my iBook for 2 years now, via USB. And my Previous MacBook used to read and access data from the same HD too. I dunno if I have changed any setting or any software update technically forbid the access from any other Mac systems except iBook, which I bought with.
In iBook, the external HD works perfectly. I eject it, connect it to any of my MacBook now, the light on the device is turned on but nothing moves in Finder. There's no icon, unlike in iBook where a USB HD icon appears below Macintosh HD. I tried to partition and erase everything, remain Mac OS (Journaled) format, but no luck. It's properly detected and accessible by iBook but not any others.
Have I possible changed anything without knowing it ? Can someone share with me what to do next ? The external HD works well but I dun understand why none of other Mac systems recognise it, except the original iBook. Thank you.

I am using a 100GB from Samsung. Should have mentioned earlier. It's USB-powered. I never use it with any adapter. I just plug it into iBook G4 and in less than 2 seconds time, drive pops up in Finder perfectly.
However with MacBook running either Leopard or Tiger, the light will be on and you hear it spinning. I tried to plug in adapter last night, still no luck.
I re-partitioned to GUID or Master Boot or Apple, either Mac Extended (Journaled) or MS-DOS, none of them works.
Then, last night I tried to boot-camp Windows XP and to my surprise, it was detected without any problem ! Oh...... So now I think the problem is not in USB port, not in the power adapter (which I never use), not in the format, it's in Tiger or Leopard for MacBook.
Tiger I use on iBook G4 is 10.4.11 (no problem at all)
Tiger I use on MacBook is also 10.4.11 (not detected but light is on)
Leopard I use on MacBook is 10.5.2 (not detected but light is on)
I spent so much time transfer data from external HD to iBook then to iPod then to MacBook. I just dun understand. Thank you for all your posts. ^_^

Time Machine and New Macbook, old iBook problem.

Hi there. I was using a G4 iBook until about 1 month ago. I had been backing it up with time machine. I then bought a new computer. Upon start up, I used time machine to move my applications and files over to the new Macbook. Everything has been dandy with the new Macbook.
Today I tried to back up the Macbook using time machine but it appeared to freeze about halfway through. I investigated the boards for advice. Since my iBook was a Power PC and the new Macbook is an Intel computer, I understand that I needed to reformat the external hard drive. Okay, I did that. I then tried to run a backup but it again froze, after only 60 MBs of 37 GBs. When I try opening the external hard drive I notice that it still refers to my computer as my iBook rather than the Macbook. Does this explain the problem and if so, how can I rename my computer to reflect the change? I don't get it.

To the extent that Time Machine uses a computer's "name" in naming its backup files, that could be the explanation.
Have you renamed your MacBook to see if that helps?

ITunes performance on MacBook versus iBook

I'm thinking about upgrading my 3 1/2 year old iBook for a new MacBook and I'm wondering how much of an improvement I'll get using iTunes. I've got about 23,000 songs on an external Firewire drive and there's typical an annoying delay loading my library and then occasional spinning multicolored orbs when I'm navigating the library.
Since using iTunes with AirTunes is one the main functions I use the laptop for, I'm wondering if the increase in processor power (1.07 to 2.4 GHz) and RAM (768 MB to 2 GB) on a MacBook will result in a significant improvement in performance.
Also, since my iTunes library is housed in an external drive, I'm wondering to what degree the slowdowns are caused by the speed of the Firewire connection. Would connecting my external drive to a laptop with Firewire 800 capability play a significant role in improving the overall performance of iTunes?
Yeah, I know these are subjective, largely unanswerable questions. I'm just looking for some comments based on everyone's experiences.

I think you'll find that the new MacBook will be dramatically faster.
I have a 10,000 song library and recently upgraded from a 1.5 Ghz 12" PowerBook. There is no longer a delay while loading the library, zero blips while browsing it, and even coverflow works perfectly. You'll be very impressed.

You didn't mention what you are planning to do with the laptop. If you're looking for a basic system to do word processing, email, and web surfing, the ibook is more than adequate, runs cooler, and is much less expensive. If you're wanting to do more with your system, especially things which require more processor power, then you simply can't beat the new intel systems.
As for pro vs macbook, there are plenty of other threads on this list that can give you some tips. A quick comparison:
MB ram max is 2GB, MBP is 3GB
MBP has faster processor options
Screen on MBP is larger - up to 17"
hard drive in MB is user-upgradeable, not in MBP
MBP graphics are faster than MB
MBP has expressCard slot for future upgrade options
MBP has a back-lit keyboard
Some people really don't like the keyboard on the MB; it's a bit different than most folks are used to, though in actual use it's pretty nice.
Try to visit a mac store or other retailer and check out the differences yourself. The differences between the MBP and MB are relatively minor; for most users, the MB is more than adequate. Kind of depends what you want to use it for.
To Alan E: Interesting observation about the temperature of your MBP - every C2D MBP I've gotten my hands on gets uncomfortably hot during heavy processor use. Try running an app like the Prey demo available on the apple software site - it will warm your machine up. Guaranteed. I agree about the speed of the laptop, though - it's really fast.
Oh, and madeMacx: you can disable the keyboard backlight if you find it annoying. It's nice when you actually need it, but the novelty wears off pretty quickly

Can't be done without stripping the DRM. That is illegal, and can't be discussed in this forum. If you have no DRM that's one thing. There are several services that will convert the book format. I've found a few on Google.

The iBook and the MacBook/Pro are three very different computers, the most obvious difference being the Intel Core [2] Duo and the G4 processors. The best laptop would of course be a MBP, with the larger screen, more processing power (over 2GHz), and dedicated video card.
However, the best laptop for you is up to you. What would you be using it for? iBooks are best for less CPU and memory intensive processes, like internet surfing, music, maybe light photo editing or simpler games, etc. MacBooks are best for internet, photo editing, light video editing, some games, etc. If you think you'd ever get into heavy video editing or gaming, the MBP is the way to go with the dedicated video card. MacBooks are best for today's consumers, MacBook Pros are best for today's professionals, and iBooks are best for today's kids (or adults who don't need the computer for much more than internet and email).
Like Nick A said, Intel-based Macs are the best. PPC Macs just don't compare, and they're best for kids, like I said above.

Big dilemma... MacBook or iBook?

Here's the situation. I need a laptop. It will be used as a secondary computer while I am on trips. I'll do graphic and web design work, some Flash, using Adobe Creative Suite 2 and Macromedia software. None of them are Universal Binaries, therefore they will run under Rosetta on Intel Macs.
I'll do all my heavy tasks on the PowerMac, so I don't really need a "Pro" laptop. My choices are: iBook and MacBook.
Have anyone tried to work with Adobe CS2 apps on MacBook? How are they performing?

If you need the fastest performance and best battery life I'd seriously consider finding an iBook on eBay to hold you over until these apps are UB. On my MBP versus my PB G4 photoshop loads slower, but once in it tends to be on par, but it's not faster. Also battery life isn't too hot. The macbook is said to have an hour or two more battery life than a MBP, but using those apps via rosetta on battery may kill it quicker than just using a iBook. If you do the eBay thing you may wish to get a powerbook instead, though they also have less battery life, but they do have faster ram and processors.
Again I believe buying a macbook is the best choice as it will be much faster once these apps go UB. If you need a new book and want one with a G4 just do yourself a favor and don't buy it new as you'll be wasting your money away.

Transferring data to Macbook from iBook

I have transferred lots of needed files from my old iBook to my new Macbook but can't get them to open. They were done on Appleworks 6.2.2. Is there any hope of opening them? I purchased Office for Mac with my new laptop.

ok. I enabled Appleworks 5 and 6 in the Word menu. The same thing happened as before when I tried to open a transferred document: a box popped up with options to get iWorks...I assume for a price. There was a trial for 30 days but don't I need it for more time if I am to be able to continue to open these documents as I wish?

Upgrading to Macbook from Ibook - software conflict?

I'd like to mirror my current system and sofware across to the a new-to-me Macbook.
How can I do it - if indeed it's possible? Ideally, I'd like to burn a disc image of my entire machine and copy that across somehow.

To build a little on what Michael just said. You simply can't do it. While the OS for your iBook looks pretty much the same as it does on the new MacBooks (or any new Intel based machine), it is very different under the hood. The version of OS X that you have on your iBook "speaks" PowerPC. It wouldn't have the slightest idea what to do with an Intel processor. You can move your personal documents and applications over, but you can't simply move over an entire image.

Need help moving cursor from MacBook to iBook G4 together...

using my mouse. I bought a new MacBook, but still use my old iBook G4 and it works great too.
I just can't figure out how to have the cursor go from one to another. I tried Synergy, but it became confusing when I tried to install and have now given up.
Anyone have any solutions to this?

In my case I use my iMac's keyboard and mouse to tell my PowerMac G5 and my MacBook what to do.
The PowerMac G5 and MacBook Teleports are configured to share, and the iMac is setup to control the other 2. It works very well for me. At worse, when I move my MacBook out of the office and back, I sometimes have to tell the iMac to stop using Teleport and then start again to re-acquire the MacBook. Otherwise it is great.

All the software on the MacBook will be universal binary based so that it will run on the Intel processor without issue. The iBook has a G4 processor. That was the latest PowerPC processor to go into a laptop, but not the latest PowerPC processor. The G5 processor apparently turned out to run too hot to put into a laptop.
If you already have software that needs a PowerPC, that would be the best reason other than price to stick with the older technology. If you do not have old software, you should go with the newest technology, the MacBook. Especially if you already have windows software, some of which can run on the Intel MacBook.
Not having a MacBook myself, I'd be reluctant to comment much further. However, the iMac Intel I purchased was not new, but runs like new, and I'm extremely pleased with it. My iBook G4 was purchased new two years ago before I learned the advantages of buying a refurbished Mac from Apple. Since then I steered someone else in the family into a refurb iBook, and they've been very happy with it. It was just as nice as mine was when it was new.
By the way, I'm pretty sure that any iBook will have iLife included with it, but it won't run as fast as it will on the MacBook.

Dual screen with MacBook and iBook possible?

Hi,
I was wondering if it was possible to have the MacBook and a iBook G4 hooked up dual screen?
If so what are the things I need to make it happen?
I am doing photo editing and just got a MacBook and I need the extra screen space and I have my old iBook laying around my house and thought I could use it for extra screen space.

Unfortunately you can't, and there really isn't anyway to do it. You would be best of buying a cheap LCD monitor.

Buying new Macbook, Selling iBook - What to do about files?

Hi all, I heard there is a program where I can transfer all my files from my iBook to other laptops..is this true? If so, what is needed in terms of hardware/software?
Also, since I am selling my old one, do I need to wipe out the harddrive? How would I do that?
If there's any other tips you guys can give me concerning what to do when buying/selling a laptop please advise!

You can transfer certain files and folders using Migration Assistant, but because you are moving from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac this is not the best solution. Instead you should only move your personal data files. You'll find most of the movable items here:
Here is a list of where your important data is stored ("~" stands for "Home"):

You can transfer between computers by connecting the two computers with a Firewire cable and using Target Disk Mode.
You would be advised to zero out your old drive before sale if you have sensitive data on it you prefer not be accessible. Here's how:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. Select the startup volume and click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
4. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
5. When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now install a fresh copy of OS X.
After completing the installation of OS X do not restart the computer. Merely shut it down. The next owner will then be presented with the startup assistant when they first power up the computer. It will be as if the computer were new.

If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC
System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies
Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
Kernel extensions

In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
