Macbook Vs iMac

I know this sounds mental, but with the same speed hardware and memory is the iMac slightly faster then a Macbook because it's a desktop computer?????

While there is a low end iMac with the Intel GMA 950 (model MA710LL), you are still dealing with a faster and larger internal hard drive than found on the MacBook. Thus "the same hardware" is a bit of a misnomer. The 3.5" hard drives invariably are faster than their 2.5" counterparts. Not to mention you have an extra Firewire port the MacBook does not have, and an extra USB port for additional faster drive access externally.
The only difference is that MA7210LL has a slower processor than the current MacBook or the rest of the iMacs. That in of itself may have bearing if you have a completely processor dependent application. Most though depend on hard drive, RAM, and processor.

    I have installed OS X Mavericks on macbook pro, macbook air & iMac but I am having terrible trouble with apple Mail. I need to take all accounts online frequently OR worse I have to quit mail and restart computer. Is anyone else having problems?

    I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
    My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As".  So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail.  I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Here's what I know:
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
    The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
    I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update.  None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them.  This is maddening!  What can be done?  Apple?? Anyone???

    When I transferred my iPhoto from macbook to iMac it created double events for each, how do I correct this?

    How did you do it?
    Here's what should work:
    To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
    Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
    But however you do choose to link the two machines...
    Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
    This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • HD content between MacBook and iMac

    I searched around the forums and I couldn't find anything that answered this exact question. Its a bit of a tough one im sure, so here goes.
    Recently I purchased a new 13" MacBook Pro and used the automatic data transfer to set up the machine, so it has the the exact same programs as the iMac that I purchased a year ago or so. Now, I purchased a few HD TV shows on the macbook to test a way to transfer the shows between computers. I know how to do the iPod transfer method (moving content to iPod and then switching machines and checking for purchased content) But that method only worked for the standard def version of the show.
    The Question: How do I get the HD version to move from macbook to imac and vice versa? Is there a method or will the standard just have to do? This is not urgent, Im just curious.

    The HD version is not synced to your iPod as it cannot be played there.
    You'll have to connect your two Macs together or use an external HD or flash drive to transfer the HD version.

  • Connecting WCG200 or WRT150N Router w/ a Macbook Pro & iMac

    I plan to buy either the WCG200 or WRT150N router (recommendations welcomed!) for use with Macbook Pro & iMac computers. Could someone please direct me to a set-up & configure guide? I assume this info is not included with the router. Thank you for your help.

    Both routers come with a CD which contains the manual which explains the configuration interface of the router. You can also download the manual from the linksys support website. On the support website you'll also find articles how to setup the router in various scenarios.

    Used the right memory according to page, both for my iMac and MacBook Pro, iMac worked, MacBook Pro didn't start (warning tone).
    Any idea?

    I suggest you buy your memory from OWC or DataMem. Both guarantee the memory works or will replace it if it does not, no questions asked, within their 30 day return period. I've used both for over 20 years, and no complaints.

  • Transfering Aperture Files from MacBook to iMac

    I have Aperture on both a MacBook and iMac. I want to transfer photos, as aperture projects, from my MacBook onto my iMac. I can't seem to make this happen. Currently, I connect the 2 computers, use the MacBook as an external drive and drag the projects onto the iMac desktop and then import them from the desltop into Aperture. Very, very slow. Any suggestions on how to send Aperture projects on the MacBook straight into Aperture (as projects) on the iMac. Thanks very much for any advice. Anthony
    iMac5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    There is a very big difference in speed depending on whether you transfer projects with referenced images, or managed images.
    Saving/exporting projects with referenced files is really fast! (but of course you need to reconnect the master files if you haven't stored them on an external drive while importing).
    I could be wrong but I believe almost everyone here waits for a solution to synchronize a laptop and desktop seamlessly. since most user seem to have adopted the paradigm "laptop: use while/after photoshoot" --> "desktop: edit and adjust"....
    my temporary solution is to use the same external disk in most cases for masters, and export import "approjects". It's tricky, but works as a temporary compromise.

  • I transferred files and photos from MacBook to iMac via ethernet cable and using migration assistant. However every time I transferred, it created a separate user and it transferred all files and photos again and again. So now I have 3 users accounts ?

    I transferred files and photos from MacBook to iMac via ethernet cable and using migration assistant. However every time I transferred, it created a separate user and it transferred all files and photos again and again. So now I have 3 users accounts with all files and photos saved 3 times on same iMac !! Any idea how to avoid this ?

    Yes, you ran into a very understandable problem.
    When you use Migration Assistant, it cannot over-write the account that you happen to be using at the time. Upon migrating accounts, it will tell you that it is going to create a new one, but that message is easy to miss.
    If you have three identical accounts, log in to the account you want to keep, and delete the redundant ones in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
    Now that you know, the easiest way to migrate accounts is to use Setup Assistant when you first get a new Mac. That eliminates any possibility for this to occur, but most people are so eager to use their new Mac that they elect to migrate later.
    That's OK too, but in that case you would want to create a temporary account whose sole purpose is to run Migration Assistant so that you may migrate your old one with an identical name. Be sure to give the new account Administrator privileges. When that finishes you would log in to the newly migrated account, and delete the temporary account.

  • HT4783 I cannot AirDrop files between my MacBook Pro & iMac.

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    You can only write in NTFS drives in Windows, not OS X or Linux or any other UNIX-based system. If you want to write in NTFS drives, you have to use a third-party application as Paragon NTFS.
    Another possibility you have is to format the external drive in a format that OS X can read and write in it, like HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), FAT32 (MS-DOS (FAT)) or exFAT, but this is longer and you need a lot of time to back up your external drive files

  • Lion designed for MacBooks and iMacs, not Mac Pros?

    Seems to me that most of the major features of Lion only benefit folks using trackpads, which means mainly MacBook and iMac users. If you're a mouse-user all that built-in swiping and tapping is useless. To some degree, the same is true with Air Drop,great if you're mobile, but not so necessary otherwise. So, since I do 95% of my serious computer work on a Mac Pro, I see no benefit in upgrading to Lion. The only features that seem relevant are some of the lesser touted features like auto-save and maybe Mission Control, although that seems a bit meh to me.
    Anyone care to tell me why I should invest $29 in this alleged upgrade?

    Nostatic1
    I upgraded, had a look and then decided to go back to Snow Leopard. Lion was a bit buggy for a start, but like you I have a Mac Pro, and do a lot of design type work, not as a profession though. Auto save worries me, as I want full control over when I save when designing stuff. To have to go back through lots of saved versions to get to the one I want to keep would seem to me to just be creating more work for me. As I understand it, it only works in apps that are adapted to use it, so my old CS3 would not do it, but that direction worries me if I don't have control over it.
    A lot of the new features can be switched off if you don't like them, which is what I did, so why upgrade? The new iCal and Address Book are horrendous looking too!!! Gaudy is the term that comes to mind. So is the full screen version of Photo Booth. Those types of apps look OK on the iPhone, but look horribly out of place on a Mac, where they have already taken all the colour out of the program window borders to leave a pale grey. I couldn't bear to look at them, and had to replace those bits of the apps with graphics of my own.
    My advice is not to do anything for at least a while. It seems that an awful lot of posts in this forum are people wanting to know how to alter Apple's defaults and to switch things off. I am hoping Apple is watching and taking notice.
    It seems to me that Apple has taken the success of the iPhone and iPad as its inspiration to change the Mac. I have an iPhone and I find the apps like address book that reopen where you closed them a pain. Usually I don't want that same person again, and I have to navigate back to my groups, then out again to get to the right person. It would be much simpler to always start at groups. I cannot imagine doing serious design work with my finger on an iPad. The two should remain separate entities.
    This is the first upgrade that I have reverted from in 18 years as a Mac user, and the first time I am really getting worried that Apple is going off in the wrong direction - and the first time that Steve Jobs is not at the helm. I don't have a good feeling for the future.

  • Mail is sluggish on macbook and iMac - on iPhone it is quick to send. What's up with that?

    Mail is sluggish on macbook and iMac - on iPhone it is quick to send.  It sometimes will take the better part of a minute to be sent out.  On the phone it is quick.  Could it have something to do with the phone being on 4G while the laptop and desktop are wifi?

  • Networking MacBook and iMac

    I have gotten my MacBook into the iMac Network, but can't transfer or share files. If I drag a file into the MacBook , I get a window that asks to "Select the volumes to mount" and the choises are all ghosted, I can't do anything with this window. Can i create a MacBook Dropbox on the iMac? Or how do I transfer files. They're connected via firewire. Thanks, JM

    Bob, thanks for your interest. When I went into Sharing on the iMac, and enabled Personal File Sharing, with a computer name of "karen"(it's my wife's iMac) it put "karen" into the Network, and created a Public folder which contained a Dropbox. With this I can drag files to the dropbox, and retrieve them on the MacBook. However, when I do the same in Sharing on the MacBook, no Public folder and Dropbox appear. So, so far I can't transfer files from MacBook to iMac. Any help is appreciated. Jim
