Macbook vs Macbook Pro - confused

Was going to buy my daughter a Macbook. Bump it up to 4GB of RAM and add Apple Care. Total cost: £1,020.00
Then I checked out the 13" Macbook Pro. Comes with 4GB of RAM by default. Comes with 320 GB storage by default (Macbook comes with 250 by default). Cost of the Pro with AppleCare is £1,107.60
Now here's why I'm confused. For just £87.60 more I get a more powerful machine but is also lighter?? It's the lighter part that's really surprised me. I would have expected the Pro to weigh more. The Macbook weighs in at 4.7 lbs. The 13" Pro weighs in at 4.5 lbs.
I would have expected the Pro's casing to be heavier than the standard Macbook. Just trying to figure out why anyone would go with a Macbook if for such a small amount more you get a better machine all around. Am I missing something or is this just all by design, ie Apple's way of getting those who compare to pony up that little more?

Lucky daughter, indeed.
There are two other differences between the two machines that are worth considering. (1) The video quality of the MBP is significantly better than the MB, with an image that's brighter and seems to have more detail. (2) The MBP's aluminum casing is thinner and lighter than a polycarbonate MB, and the aluminum resists dirt and scuffs somewhat better.
If you purchase a '10 generation MBP on refurb on the Apple Store, you should be able to save even more, while avoiding the heat issues of the '11 generation MBP. And you get a full warranty.

Sometimes deleting the account and then re-creating it can solve this issue
Write down all the information in accounts before doing this
Highlight the account on the left and click the minus button
Then click the plus button to add the new account and follow the prompts

I am confused about something.  How do I read a book on my MacBook Pro?  I can't find the iBook app anywhere, which is what I use on my iPad.  The book I want to read is in my iTunes but I can't click on it.  Some of my iBooks show up in my iTunes but they are "grayed" out.  The only books that respond in iTunes are audiobooks and that's not what I'm looking for.  Is this a stupid question?

Nevermind - I answered my own question, which is I CAN"T READ ANY BOOKS I purchased in iBooks on my MacBook Pro.  If I want to read on my mac I have to use Kindle or Nook.  Which means any book I've already purchased through iBooks has to be read on my iPad.  Kind of a drag because there are times when it's more convenient for me to read while I'm sitting with my Mac.

  • Issue with MacBook Pro (mid 2009) wifi multiple AP signal 'confusion'

I'll try to explain this as best I can, not being an expert in networking!
I recently upgraded my router from a Linksys WRT160N to an Airport Extreme, in the hope that it would do a better job of broadcasting a stronger wifi signal throughout my house. Whilst it is improved, it's still no good enough for streaming to my iPad 2 where I want in the house. Reading around on the web I discovered that I should be able to use the Linksys as an AP to extend the effective range of my wifi network, as long as it is hardwired into the base station via Ethernet (no WDS support on the Linksys model).
So, I managed to get this all up and running, disabling the dchp on the Linksys, fixed ip allocation etc and using the same SSID and passwords etc. All is well with the iPhone and iPad2 access - they just automatically switch to the strongest signal no problem when I move around the house. Cool.
The issue lies with the MBP - I have a favoured spot in the house where both the broadcast signal from the AEBS and Linksys are very strong, and the MBP gets all confused. opening up the lid from standby it searches for the wifi (bar moving up and down the signal indicator) and then just has an exclamation mark. I try to manually select the SSID but no dice. I have to switch the MBP adaptor off and on, rescan avail networks, and lo and behold two versions of my SSID are shown. Select one and then it connects. However, I have to go through this whole exercise every time I pull the MBP out of standby, which is very irritating.
I do have a workaround - if I name the SSID on the Linksys something different, the problem goes away. However, i effecktively now have 2 wireless networks & I then have to manually switch between the two SSID's to get the strongest signal depending where I am in the house. It's suffices for now but not ideal.
What I don't get is why is it only the MBP affected & the iPhone & iPad 2 are fine? Is this anything to do with the 2.4 ghz & 5 ghz being broadcast by the AEBS getting all mixed up with just the 2.4 ghz being broadcast from the Linksys??? Both 2.4 & 5 ghz are broadcasting the same SSID.
    Any help appreciated.

OK - fixed this now. By setting the 5 Ghz channel on the AEBS to a different SSID and putting this to the top of my priority WIFI connections on the MacBook Pro then it ignores the conflict between the 2.4 Ghz networks being broadcast by the Linksys & AEBS. No more hanging connection when I resume the MBP

A basic MBA will be more than adequate.  Take into consideration that storage may be a long term issue unless you are not averse to traveling with an external HDD.

  • Charging confusion of Macbook Pro

i'm really confused. and probably, there would be same topics as to this posted many times. my apology for posting this again.
i have read about Macbook Pro batteries from apple.com. i use to talk to many people and ask about batteries which brought me upto this confusion.
well, my question is, should i charge macbook pro when it's battery is completely drained or it's okay to charge at any time as long as it's not at 100%?
for example, i wanna start charging it while its 60% and make it to 100%. is there any problem with it?
one guy came to me and said that, don't charge it until battery reaches to 5 or 10 percent.

Back in the days, older laptops came with Ni-Cad batteries that needed to be fully drained before you charge them back to life to avoid what they call a memory effect - a very long explaination.
Then came NiMh type batteries that are a little better than Ni-Cad batteries and gave you better battery life but you must also charge it when it's almost fully drained.  Still have what they called memory effect - hence the " only charge it when it's close to 10% left.
Lithium Ion came a few years later that performed much better than both previous batteries and are still being used by PC notebooks and some older powerbooks.  But once in a while, you still have to do some battery maintenance to keep it in peak performance.
MB uses Lithium Polymer batteries that last longer and doesn't need as much maintenance as the above 3 batteries.  You can leave it plugged in or you can recharge then anytime you want and not have too much effect on it's performance.
That is the short version of it.
Hope that helps you a bit......

To check your model go to About This Mac (by clicking on the Apple icon, top left) and then select more info. If you wish to use mirroring you will need one from 2011 or later running OSX 10.8 or later. The alternative would be to use 3rd party software like Airparrot.

  • SSD setup for Macbook Pro 2011....confused!

    Hi guys
I have just got a Macbook Pro from 2011. (after being a lifelong pc user).
I want to upgrade the hard drives. Would it be better to get a 256 SSD for OS and programs as the main drive, and a larger SSD or HDD as a second drive in place of the cd drive. Or to get one of these new 1tb SSD's and put everything on it. As its SSD would it make a difference in performance to have one big one for everything?
Also, Im struggling with choosing a brand. I seem to be stuck between Samsung and Crucial, mainly the Samsung 840 EVO 1tb vs the Crucial m550 1TB. I have read some things saying that there are problems with the 840 evo on macbooks from 2011, but have read in other places that the 840 evo is better than the crucial.....so confusing!!
If anyone can shed some light on this I will be very grateful!!
    Alex

    robodelfy,
I've been using Crucial SSDs since I purchased my last MacBook Pro in 2012. I currently have a M500 960GB Crucial SSD in my machine and three Crucial SSDs in a Windows machine. Never had a problem with it.
Although the Samsung 850 Pro is the fastest drive available to consumers, your computer won't be able to take advantage of all that bandwidth. If I were you, I would look at the Crucial M550 1024GB SSD or the Samsung 840 EVO 1024GB SSD. There were some problems with the earlier releases of the EVO drive but I believe that they have been fixed now.
    Good luck,

  • Very Confused about Editing HD on a MacBook Pro!?!?!

    -Hello
I just recently bought a MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo like 6months Ago. I Then Went ahead and bought FCP 5.1.4 I was Importing Footage from a Camera's recorder and Everything was working well. All went down hill when I went out and Bought a (JVC-GZ HD7) Harddisk HandCamcorder and Began Recording Major Events... I was shooting(FULL HD 1920/1080)... Just about 2hrs worth of footage was imported into my FCP and THE RAW FOOTAGE TAKES **** NEAR HOURS TO RENDER... And when It plays THE RAW FOOTAGE It lags... what can i do to speed up the process? Some say I need an External Hard Drive, Some say I need more Ram, I SAY I NEED AN EXACT answer....
I NEED HELP AS SOON AS POSIBLE... Thanx...

    Hey Shane,
Well, Listen My Team Of Editors have gotten together and Followed your Instructions that you had sent me to Transfer the TOD files into TS files on the VLC program But I seem to be a little confused with the File/Stream options given. IF you do not mind a Step by Step Procedure would be very Helpfull. At your own convinence of course.
    thanx
THis is what was sent to me...
.....Note for Macintosh users using professional non-linear editing systems such as Final Cut Pro, April 28, 2007
If you are using Final Cut Pro or other professional non-linear editing programs on the Mac, you cannot use the camera's native .TOD format, which is basically an MPEG inside the .TOD container. Forget about following JVC's instructions: they are too time-consuming and don't allow batch processing. The easiest conversion method I've found requires two freeware programs: The VLC media player, and MPEG Streamclip, both available on the Apple Website (and elsewhere). You'll first need to use the VLC player to convert the .TOD into a .TS file, which takes seconds (you are only changing the container format to MPEG TS, not actually changing compression). Once you've changed the .TOD file to a .TS file, you can use MPEG Streamclip to change to a variety of file formats that Final Cut Pro can recognize. Of course since you are recompressing the file at this point, expect this to take far longer than the first step.
While you can use a variety of compressions, I use DVCPRO60. Files compressed using DVCPRO60 can be viewed in Final Cut immediately without a need to render. The quality of the final DVC PRO .MOV file seems identical to the original .TOD file.......

  • Confused: Bought a MacBook aluminium 2.0 with a MacBook Pro keyboard!

    Hello everybody!
Recently purchased MacBook aluminium. First thing I did was checking backlit keyboard. After tapping F5 and F6(signs of backlit are on them! They are not empty like on 2.0 aluminium.) I got crossed sign of backlit. I didn't know nothing about differences between 2.0 and 2.4 MacBooks, so I wasn't confused about these signs. After updating to Mountain Lion buttons are empty(after tapping - nothing happens). Appearence of Mac is perfect, so I don't have any doubts about keyboard replacement. So, I have a question: Maby Pro keyboard can be enabled for using backlit?(Sow, that keyboard is simmilar to MacBook Pro 2013). I used thirdparty soft for enabling it(LabTick) but nothing happened too. What a mistery, people?

Maybe its a secret concept of first Aluminium MacBook? Ha?

  • I just purchased a macbook pro and am trying to get itunes library and other documents from macbook 2.1 running 10.4.11 and migration assistant tells me to update but it tells me i am up to date...confusing...how do i fix this issue?

The camera must be plugged in to AC power (not batteries only). And generally, the camera should be set to Play mode, not recording mode.

  • MacBook Pro Location Confusion...

For some reason today my MacBook Pro (mid-2010, Lion 10.7.2) thinks it's in Hawaii.  I wish, but it's actually in Boulder, CO.  Any ideas/fixes?

Yes, and that means disabling the automatic feature.  It's the automatic location setting that isn't working for me.
To recap: When I enable automatic time zone selection based on current location, the computer sets the location and time zone to Kihei, Hawaii.  I love Maui, but I'm currently in Boulder Colorado.  I can disable the automatic feature and set the time zone to Boulder/MST manually, but that defeats the convenience of the automatic feature.
I haven't tried moving the computer yet.  That might be it, and I can try in a few minutes.
    Thanks, Erik

  • I cannot get both monitors to work when connecting my MacBook Pro to a VGA monitor using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter

Need help with 2 monitor set up on MacBook Pro.

I am sorry for the confusion.  The reason I asked about the speaker bar is that I can't find any information that shows built-in speakers on your monitor.  I have looked everywhere, including in the HP specifications.
Here is the Back I/O panel (Input / Output) for your computer:
    Figure 2: Back I/O panel
1 - Video Graphics Adapter port
    2 - USB 2.0: 4
    3 - RJ45 Network (LAN)
    4 - Audio: Line in
    5 - Audio: Front speaker/Line out
    6 - Audio: Microphone in
The way that I have always connected speakers is to the port labeled # 5 (Audio: Front speaker/Line Out).  This port allows sound to be sent to speakers.  The VGA port is for video only.  There is no audio capability.  The only connection that sends Audio and Video is the HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) connectors.
This is the type of connector that I would expect to see coming from your speakers:
The male one at the bottom of the picture.
Please check the monitor carefully to assure that there are actually speakers built-in.  I just don't want us to continue fighting a problem that doesn't exist.  There may have been some incorrect information in the advertisement that you read.
