MacBook vs MacBook Pro RAM

I have just got a new MBP and plan to replace the 2x1gb of official Apple RAM in it with 2x2gb of some other RAM that I already own (and used in my previous MBP, now dead).
I'm wondering if I can use the 2x1gb of official Apple MBP RAM in my friend's 2.1ghz Mac Book, bought last year. It currently has 1gb of the original installed Apple RAM, as 2x512mb.
Anybody know if the Mac Book Pro RAM should be compatible with a Mac Book?

the macbooks and the pros use the same kind of ram - should be fine.
they both use 667MHz DDR2 memory (PC2-5300)

  • MacBook pro RAM to new iMac ???

    G'day,
Does anyone know if MB Pro RAM is compatible with the new iMacs.
I know it is with the previous iMac's, but I can't find out off the OWC Wesite???
    Cheers.

The latest iMacs are 800MHz, I think the Macbook Pro is 667MHz.
You can check this in About this Mac, is shows on the dialog box the bus speed of the ram.

  • Using 13" Macbook pro ram in a 15" macbook pro

Hey Community I hope everyone is doing well.
I just put my 2009 13" 2.53 ghz macbook pro ram in my new 2011 15" Macbook pro 2.0 ghz.
I bought the 15" with 4 gb of ram so i upgraded it to 8 gb which i had in the 13".
The 15" stock ram has four nodes on it, while the 13" ram has 8 nodes on it. However it was a great fit.
    Now my question:
are there any longevity/performance issues i should be concerned about using this ram?
I'm a heavy ram user in logic studio so the ram is definitely needed, i'm just wondering if i should be concerned enough to buy another 8gb's from crucial.
    Thanks!!!

I apologize guys i didnt even specify the ram that i put in!
The ram is 1066 ghz ddr 3 also purchased from crucial.
The 15" takes 1333MHz. At the very minimum, you are creating a bottleneck. Buy new RAM.

  • Macbook air or pro ?

    Hi.
First, I apologise for my english, which is not vey good.
So, I'm thinking of changing my old (3 years) white macbook 13' this summer.
But I don't know if I have to choose the macbook air 13' or the macbook pro 13'...
I'm a student and my tasks are :
    - surfing on the net
    - watching movies
    - listening to music
    - doing work on Microsoft office or I'Life for my studies
    - using photoshop (a little bit, not for big works)
    - playing games. I'm not a big gamer. Most of the time I'm playing Football Manager, but Batman Arkham City, Fifa 12 or Assassins Creed could be games which I use.
So my question is simple : for these tasks is it better to buy macbook air (with 8GB ram) or macbook pro (but I don't want an HDD, I prefer SSD and it costs me 187 euros more if I choose a MBP) ?

    Thank's for your answer !
The portability of the air, is in fact more important, because of its weight in my bag !
In terms of graphic results, the MBP 13 and MBA 13 both have HD Intel.....etc   But is there any difference because of the processor during my tasks ?

  • MacBook vs MacBook Pro

I am vacillating between a 13" MacBook (just love the Black...) and the 15" MacBook Pro.
I've checked the specs out here: http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/comparison_chart.html
The one difference between them that I don't really understand the real-world significance of is the graphics card and video memory.
I don't play games on my Mac, but do enjoy using Photoshop Elements 4 for photo editing (which I know is not yet available as a Universal App).
Can anyone give me an idea as to the significance of the difference between the MacBook and MacBook Pro for non-gaming purposes? (With either notebook, I plan on getting 1 GB of RAM) Thanks!

    Thanks, all for your thoughts.
Since there's absolutely nothing wrong with my 15" PowerBook G 4, I have to now decide if now is the time to move into the new and exciting world of MacIntel, or wait longer. Ultimately, though, I think it's the cool black that's drawing my attention.
Once you go black, you never go back (or so I am told....)

  • My Macbook and Macbook pro are both sluggish this week

Is anyone using a macbook pro or older macbook with mobilme having these computers suddenly working very  sluggishly.  what might be worng.  ( Mail, address book, even the web is extremely slow suddenly)  Anyone have any ideas for me.  What should I do?

My free RAM has been bottoming out the last 3 days. It is at 32 MB right now with just iTunes and Safari open. 1 month ago I used to have about 3 powerpoint slides, 4 or 5 web pages up, and itunes running with no problems. In the last 3 days I've got the Low Memory window and it made me close out of my programs again and again and again. I've got the Lion software on my Macbook with 4 GB RAM. Pretty mad about the situation too, can anyone help?

  • Macbook and Logic Pro Information

Folks, I currently own a 1.8 dual G5 and run the latest version of Logic Pro on it and it runs fine.
However, I'm looking to get a laptop in addition, to make the whole thing more mobile and was wondering whether I would be able to get the latest macbook (not Pro) and effectively run the latest version of Logic Pro on it? I'd be putting 2 Gig of Ram in it and have at least a 120 gig HD.
Has anyone tried this yet? Will the saving over getting a Macbook Pro be a false economy or would it be powerful enough to do it justice. Any pros, cons, dos and don'ts would be much appreciated.
    Cheers all.

The processor in the MacBook and MacBook Pro is essentially the same with a slight edge in speed for the MB Pro, so you really shouldn't notice a difference. Where the MB and MB Pro differ substantially is in the graphics card-but that only becomes an issue with video editing and 3D apps.

  • Macbook vc Macbook PRO

    Hey all,
Been trying to put the puzzle together, but since i never had a mac before this is getting a little tricky for me!
From the comparison charts between the macbook and the cheapest macbook pro option, there is nt much of a difference is there?
Considering the 2.26Ghz cpu which is the same on both, what are the main difference between them?
Also, yesterday i saw a website (which a cant find again) that said that the latest macbook 2009, would support 8GB for further upgrade. When i find this website again i will make sure i post it here. But what it basically said it was the the latest macbook (not the pro) does support 8GB (2X 4GB modules).
Can anyone confirm this to me? Because if that is true i would prefer buying the macbook so i can later add more RAM and a SSD hard disk.
    Kind Regards,
    Denis

    Thanks Kay,
My main concern is price p/ performance. Since i would be between the macbook and macbook pro model which has the 2.26Ghz cpu.
I think i would be smarter to go for the latest unibody macbook model, so i can use the spare money (which would go for the macbook pro) to spend in this memory kit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226019
...and later on i can add a solid state 128GB (Any recomendations? CORSAIR, OCZ, CRUCIAL, KINGSTON?)
Thanks a lot for your help mate!
ps- hyperlinks not allowed here in the forum btw? link worked!!!
So you from Koln mate? nice city! Spend great days in the international design university from your city for a week! Great times!

  • Macbook or Macbook Pro? Help!

Ok so recently I ran into some trouble with my old laptop which was a Sony Vaio 1.73 pentium M, 1 gig ram, 128mb geforce 6200, 80 gig 5400rpm hd and I now need to get a new laptop. Right now I am currently leaning towards a mac or macbook pro but I cant decide which is best.
The usual things I do with my old laptop are just downloading music/movies talking on MSN and listening to music. I also play WoW a lot and most of the time I have MSN/itunes/WoW running all at the same time and my old laptop ran that fine (WoW at max settings too). For the most part my question is, from experienced owners of macbooks, how well would this laptop hold up to the things that I usually do?

    Hi ericm777,
The MacBook and MacBook Pro are very similar machines. Both have pretty much identical processors (the Pro has slightly faster variants, but that barely ever makes any noticeable difference); both have the same type and speed of ram (although the Pro can be ordered with 3GB instead of just 2GB like the non-Pro; and both have very similar hard drive options (only difference is that the 17" Pro can be ordered with a high-speed 7200rpm 100GB HD instead of the standard 5400- or 4200rpm variants). Those are the main components that will affect performance in a computer (other than the graphics card, which is coming up), so a MacBook and MacBook Pro are very similar in performance when doing tasks such as music, web-browsing, e-mail, and casual gaming.
The difference in the two comes in two factors: graphics and design. In terms of graphics, the Pro is much better than the basic one. It has a dedicated graphics card with either 2 (basic model) or 4 (other two models) times the video ram that the MacBook has. And, dedicated video cards are a LOT better than integrated ones. Also an advantage that the Pro has in terms of graphics is what it can display. The built-in displays are bigger (1440x900 and 1680x1050 instead of 1280x800 on the basic MacBook), and they can output to bigger screens (MacBook can output to 1920x1200, whereas the Pro can output to 2560x1600).
In terms of design, the Pro is slightly better. Its aluminum case is better-looking than the MacBook's white/black plastic case (IMO), and it has better I/O. It has an ExpressCard/34 expansion slot and a Firewire 800 port (and, one more USB on the 17").
So, yes, the MacBook Pro is better than the MacBook, but it's usually not worth it. It is significantly more expensive (if you configure a white MacBook to have the same ram and HD as a 2.13GHz Pro then it is still $550 less than the Pro (in Canada)). So, that's the price of improved graphics and design.
So, what do you need? Both laptops will download/listen to music/movies and talk on MSN just as well as the other. And, other common tasks like internet, e-mail, word-processing, iPhoto, and iMovie (to an extent -- the Pro is better if you're doing big projects, though) will be pretty much identical. But, WoW MAY stutter on the base MacBook. I have never played the game, but from what its system requirements say in the Apple store you should be alright with the standard MacBook -- it doesn't seem to be an extremely demanding game. Also, if it ran fine on the Pentium M, then it should be alright on the base MacBook (the MacBook's graphics aren't as good as the Vaio's, but its processor is better, which will make up for that). Also, if WoW runs fine, then it will also run fine while other non-demanding apps like MSN and iTunes are open.
One final comparison is portability and battery performance. The MacBook has slightly longer battery life, is lighter, and is smaller. So, if you need portability then the base MacBook is better.
So, if you can afford to spend an extra $500+, then get a Pro. But generally, it is not worth it unless you are doing intense video editing or high-end gaming.
    Hope that helps!
    -Eric

  • MacBook Air, MacBook Pro Retina, or Non- Retina for academic high school student?

I will be going into high school in September and am thinking of getting a MacBook for school. This is my first computer except for the family PC desktop. I am in all academic classes, and am taking business and exploring technology ( designing and building things) I would use the laptop for schoolwork as well as gaming ( nothing too intense, just stuff like portal and Garry's mod), internet, iTunes, and ilife. It will be a gift from at least 7 people, so price is important, but not a huge factor. I think a 13" screen in perfect for my needs. Would a MacBook Pro Retina, a MacBook Pro non- retina, or a MacBook Air be the best choice for me?

If you use DVDs and CDs more than often (most people don't) then go for the MacBook Pro nonretina. I would go for the MacBook Air or pro retina because their graphics cards are much better then get a $40 usb DVD drive to load movies and other content. The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro retina also have "flash storage" and haswell chips making them super fast at opening files and applications and boosts oversell performance. You sound like you're not going to be doing any editing or graphics intense work so I would recommend the MacBook Air with 8gb ram and however much storage as you want. For around $100 more you could get the MacBook Pro retina that has the amazing display and better graphics. In the end, if the retina display would be the only real upgrade for you and price is in consideration, I would recommend the MacBook Air (also apple usually releases new model macbook airs in June so you could get one now or just wait. I would wait).

  • Macbook or Macbook Pro - Please Advise

    Hi Guys,
I would normally not ask such a trivial question, but I really am in a muddle over this one!
I currently have a Macbook, 1.83Ghz, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD etc and have been using it for iWeb and iPhoto and plan to use photoshop on it when I got the RAM up to 2GB, as I am buying a digital SLR this Christmas.
I currently use an iMac G5 for photoshop as it runs native, and also store all of my music on here.
I have just been offered a Macbook Pro at about £900 ($1500 maybe) and it has 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, 1.83GHz processor and lots more programs installed onto it than my macbook (Aperture, Logic Pro) and I am wondering whether I should make the switch. The Macbook pro is actually being sold to me from a friend who works for a certain computer company, so he just had a brand new trackpad fitted and the keyboard air cleaned just because he can (for free).
What do you guys think? Is the 15" still portable? Would it be a real improvement over the macbook for photo editing and other tasks? Is the matte screen better or just as good as my macbook's glossy one?
Please let me know opinions or views, no matter how large or small as I am in a real pickle!
    Many thanks,
    Martin

some serious quotations from Matrix would be appropriate. Most of all "I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it"... anyways, if it's not the 2nd generation MacBook Pro with the Core 2 Duo but the first one, and especially with the same processor clock speed, i'd say you're good with the one you already have and upgrading your ram... I mean, the only thing that MacBook Pro has better is the graphics card, which would help you a lot in your photoshop, but i've had MacBook for few days now, the 2Ghz one and can't complain about running anything... the other xtra feature is the illuminated keyboard, but i'd say it's not worth it.. even with the graph. card MacBook has the Photoshop should run just fine, on MBP it would be a lil faster, but thats it. MacBook is great with the 4hrs it can run on battery, on MBP i guess you can make it 2hrs if you try hard... these are the facts... (plus, the MBP has more USBs and some other ports that are more or less for regular user not important)... So to sumarize, If you prefer faster way of handling your pics in Photoshop, and also want to play games smoothly and you are willing to sacrifice the battery time for that, MBP is the choice.... On the other hand, if you prefer portability, MacBook is the one. As I said, MacBook with even 1,5 gb you wanted would be almost as fast as MBP really, so I'd say your choice already lies on your table...

  • Recommendations: macbook or macbook pro?

im getting a heap of money in 6 months, and im thinking about getting a macbook or macbook pro. the 13 inch one.
id rather go macbook for price, but the macbook pro.. whats better about it??
i have an imac right now so i know how to use macs and hence the loyalty of wanting to stay within the family for a notebook.. but.. having trouble deciding.
    help me out guys. please
any and all answers are appreciated. x

Well... if you're coming into a "heap of money", I would suggest the 13" MBP. Performance between the machines is similar, but the MBP is slightly more powerful. You will also be able to add up to 8GB of RAM should you decide to in the future. There have been lots of issues with the durability of the plastic casing on the MB as well (cracks, etc).... the MB Pro, being an aluminum unibody machine will be more durable. You also get a longer life battery and an SD card. If it came down to penny-pinching, you might have a more compelling reason to go with the white MacBook, but if cash isn't a problem, I would suggest the MBP. It's an excellent machine and will probably last you a bit longer than a MB.

Apple does not guarantee that these links will be maintained or functional at any given time. Use the information below at your own discretion.
If you have Macbook or MacBook Pro, and have upgraded to 10.5.8, you may experience slower than normal airport connection due to a bug found in the original 10.5.8 installer. Apple has released this update for MacBooks and MacBook Pros to address the issue:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortClient_Update_for_MacBook_and_MacBookPro
To amend what Apple has stated, the System Profiler will indicate you have one of these three MacBook/Pro CPUs:
    o MacBook3,1
    o MacBook4,1
    o MacBookPro4,1
If you have certain third party routers the update above will not help. In which case, it is recommended that you contact the third party router manufacturer for a firmware update, and find out also if others have your exact same router, and have found a resolution with your issue.
Wireless issues can be caused by the following:
    1. Interference on the same wireless channel.
    2. Single channel connection from some third party routers not being strong enough to deal with interference. Apple Airport Express, Extreme, and Time capsule wireless routers all support dual channel connections, and also support networking with Windows as well as Mac.
    3. Bad router tables in your router.
    4. Power surges.
    5. Interference from microwaves, or 2.4 Ghz non-cell wireless phones, whose signal is not tempered with channel hopping.
    6. Distances less than 2 feet may have many overlapping wireless waves causing interference from the wireless router.
    7. Distances greater than 150 feet from the wireless router.
    8. Walls with numerous pipes, improper ground wiring, file cabinets with numerous papers between the computer and the router.
    9. Run the hardware test that came with your computer, it may indicate an issue on the logicboard which could also impact your wireless card.
    10. Improper security on your wireless connection. Setting up a WPA2 connection is preferred over WEP, which is preferred over no password.
    11. 802.11n is a draft standard, meaning not all routers support it the same way.
    12. Data corruption in the wireless cache settings, caused by improper system maintenance:

    13. Migrating wireless settings with the Migration Assistant from a PowerPC to Intel Mac, or vice versa. It is better to follow these tips to avoid those problems:

Which is better for music production: macbook air or pro?

The MacBook Pro has higher specifications, depending
on the model, and then CTO additional upgrades.
The Air does not have a Retina display, but has lesser
specs, so that may make a difference. They still offer a
    low-end MB/Pro w/ optical drive, w/o Retina; specs vary;
it may work in your instance. You'd have 14 days to take
a new Apple computer back, so keep that in mind.
