Macbook vs powerbook

Hi
Just bought a 12" powerbook the other day and now I'm kind of thinking of returning it coz maybe the macbooks are better (faster, camera, intel duo etc.). Not sure what to do. I love the 12' screen and the fact that it's silver.
Can anyone tell me in what kind the macbooks are better? Should I keep my powerbook or get one of the new ones?
Cheers

My wife has a 12-inch PB and just bought a MacBook 2.0GHz (black) to replace it. There are pros and cons:
- MacBook screen is noticeably bigger and much brighter; the non-anti-glare screen is crisper but definitely shows a lot of glare if there is a large light source behind you (i.e. a window); my wife likes the non-anti-glare screen; I prefer the anti-glare of the old PB (even though it does appear duller by comparison).
- MacBook boots incredibly fast: 25sec (from chime to desktop), 50sec for PB (although PB is not a clean install)
- For Apple iApps the MacBook is noticeably faster; but.. Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator) and MSOffice 2004 run noticeably slower (versions we have are not compiled for intel)
- Matte black finish of the MacBook shows every smudge of oil (from skin, fingers), but it wipes clean fairly easily too. Time will be the test, but instinct tells me that the PB aluminum is much more durable than the MacBooks finish (baked enamel??)
- MacBook does have some nice features: iSight is not as good as external model, but definitely usable; Remote is very powerful (works from 30+ feet away); FrontRow is very cool; MagSafe power cord could save you hundreds in repair costs; and... of course Bootcamp is a possibility if you want to go to war with Windows.
All in all, I think the choice comes down to proven durability of the PB vs the cool new features of the MacBook. If your portable needs to be small yet rugged, I would definitely choose PB12. If you are going to play movies and view lots of media, I think MacBook is better choice. The potential speed benefits of the MacBook are going to be a wash for the next year or so until all vendors update their apps.
Hope this helps. John

  • Difficulties playing iDVD's on my MACBOOK and powerbook

I have burned some dvd's and supervideo discs on my MAcbook Pro 17 inch 2,4 duo, with iDVD but they wont play on dvd player. They DO play on my dvd player on my television, but not on my MAcbook or Powerbook
any ideas why these discs are readable only on my external dvd devices, and not on my poer or MAcbook pro?
    thanks
    artguide

    Hi a
Yes this is a common question.
    a. DVD is burned with iDVD and burn speed is not set.
    b. DVD is probably x16
    c. DVD might be of a cheep brand
    Improve DVD quality in iDVD08
    • I use the Professional encoding quality.
    • The free space on Your internal (start-up) hard disk matters and should read 25Gb or more
    • Way to import movie to iDVD: Don't use "Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie = destructive
both to the final result BUT ALSO to Your original movie materials. If photos then You need to
re-import those and re-edit them. When iMovie renders it destroys.
I drop my movie project (icon with a Star on it) into theme window of iDVD.
    • I BURN at an as slow speed as possible eg x1 = less burn errors on disk
THIS CAN BE SET in iDVD08 but not iDVD 1 - 6 where You need to do a DiskImage and burn it
with Apple Disk Util tool or Toast™
    • I use Verbatim DVD-R (there are other brands but some are really lousy)
    • DVD-R (No +R or +/-RW)
Often I do a DiskImage first. Then play it with Apple DVD-Player to judge the result before burning.

  • Macbook or powerbook?

    Hey-
I'm going to get a free dell from my mom tomorrow that I intend to sell for $400-500 tops. I'd like to take those proceeds and put them towards buying a refurbished Apple laptop.
however, i'm torn between the refurbished powerbooks which are, shockingly, more expensive than the refurbished macbooks (not looking at macbook pros).
personally, I like the design and build of the powerbooks over the macbooks, but the macbooks (even the non-pro models) look more powerful than the powerbooks. I'll be using it for photoshop work (graphic design, photo cleanup, web design), and multimedia stuff.
so can i get a recommendation? macbook or powerbook? (generally looking for something 15 inch, at least 512mb ram, preferrably 1gb)
    thank you!!!
    chris

The refurbished Powerbooks you are looking at were the top of the line laptops before the Intel Macs were released. They are the predecessors to the MacBook Pros (not the MacBooks.) MacBooks are cheaper because they don't have most of the features that were available in those refurbed Powerbooks.
If you can't spend the money for a MacBook Pro or late-model Powerbook, then you have plenty of choices amongst refurbished iBook G4s or refurbished MacBooks. If you want a 15" screen, then iBooks and MacBooks are off the list. Only the MBPs and PBs have the larger screens.

  • MacBook vs Powerbook G4 opinions?

So I've had my Powerbook since December 2005 and it's feeling like it's getting long in the tooth - specs-wise, as well as the HD being nearly full.
    Specs are...
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15"
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,8
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.6f0
I was interested to know how a modern, high-spec MacBook (not Pro) stacks up against a) my Powerbook and b) the MacBook Pro. I wouldn't really miss the aluminium finish as, on the palm rest, it's poor quality and is shielding too much WiFi reception, so I'd actually value something sturdier (ie. MacBook plastic).
My Powerbook tends to be slow and the fan comes on for not very much nowadays (ie. several Firefox tabs and vids) in a way it didn't when new. How powerful would the new MacBook feel? Certainly the 2.12GHz would be quicker than my 1.67GHz - surely it's a negligable difference up to the Pro's 2.2GHz, and they're both Core Duo 2 4Mb shared L2, right?
    ie...
    * Would I miss the drop from 15" to 13.3"?
    * Question - can I run the MacBook (or Powerbook indeed) from an external monitor, with the lid closed, at a greater resolution than the machine allows, or just at the max?
At the same HD, same optical drive, similar CPU between the MB and MB Pro, main difference would seem to be the screen size and gfx card, right? Intel 64Mb shared vs Nvidia 128/256Mb dedicated. My Powerbook was never able to run, let's say, Second Life's 3d world without getting hyper on the graphics - would taking the basic MacBook pose similar problems re: gfx?
I'd certainly plump for the 2Gb memory if taking a basic MacBook. Am I right in thinking this could not be extended further?
And would I be wise to buy before Leopard is released? ie. Are there likely to be anymore hardware releases before then that render a new purchase now less current?
Just trying to size things up.

I replaced a 12 inch powerbook with my BlackBook and can tell you it's a much better computer than my powerbook was. It does run a little warm. For normal use mine runs between 55º-60º C. If I watch MLB.TV and run a few programs at the same time it runs about 74º-80º C.
    ie...
    * Would I miss the drop from 15" to 13.3"?
I set my MacBook next to my wifes 15 inch and they look almost the same. I can't tell a big difference.
    * Question - can I run the MacBook (or Powerbook
indeed) from an external monitor, with the lid
closed, at a greater resolution than the machine

The MacBook can run with the lid closed and the external monitor can have up to 1920 by 1200 pixels resolution. More than the internals display allows.

    See this test. https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/MemoryBenchmark/AppleMacBook/
The core 2 duo MacBook officially supports 2 gb but 4 gb has been used. It can only utilize 3 gb but using the 4 gb size allows the matched pair sticks for best graphics.
And would I be wise to buy before Leopard is
released? ie. Are there likely to be anymore hardware
releases before then that render a new purchase now
    less current?
I would get it now and upgrade later after Leopard is released. Only Apple knows if any other hardware releases will come about.
If you really need the graphics the Pro would be better but I must say I have been impressed with what my MacBook can do. I'm not a gamer so I don't need 3D graphics.

  • Networking MacBook and PowerBook G4

    Good morning,
I have been trying to network a new MacBook to my older PowerBook G4. Appletalk is on in both computers and the firewalls are off. When I create airport networks with both computers, my PowerBook continually shows an 'error when trying to connect to' the MacBook.
Any advice on where to go from here?
Also, when they network successfully, will I see the icon of the other computer under the Networks icon in the finder?
    Thanks for your help.

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have a question about the surface the "books" have been sitting on. What is that desktop surface in the pictures? I can't tell, but what I am thinking is maybe both computers have been overheating because they are sitting on an insulating surface, like a heavy cloth, so no airflow or heat radiation is being promoted. That's one thing I can think of that might be common to the two. I doubt any other environmental conditions would bring this on. Certainly not the Denon speakers. Maybe you are just unlucky enough to have gotten two defective Macs. The odds against it are high, but not impossible.

  • Macbook pro/powerbook G4 LCD

I have a 2008/2009 Macbook Pro (silver keys) and the LCD randomly broke the other day (I just opened it and there was a crack on the left bottom corner. It's made a giant white line vertically to the top and now a bunch of random colored lines) I have a powerbook G4 LCD, the same size as my macbook pro's. Would I be able to put the powerbook's LCD into my macbook pro and have it still work or are they different LCD types? I'd like to know so I don't take my MBP apart and have it screwed up. )': Thanks in advance.

    Nope. No can do.

  • When will the new 12" Macbook Pro / Powerbook arrive?

    Hi everyone,
Well, it seems that I have finally decided to get an Apple. Tough decision...I'm hoping it won't be a hard transition.
I was looking at the Powerbook G4 12". However, the new Macbook just arrived, and I'm worried the 12" is not too far behind.
When do you think it will arrive?
Is it worth waiting for, regardless of timing?
Also, are there any websites or books, etc, that facilitate the transition to Mac from a Windows environment?
    Thanks !!

    You're welcome cutnedge!
Yeah, it does takes a lil' time for the conversion. So much so that i'm used to this baby of mine and i had a lil' confusion when i used other Windows laptop. Weird huh..?
It's good that you'll wait for the revise version. Well, i have no idea if they are coming up with Macbook in smaller inch which i doubt. If yes, that might not be this soon (as in this year but maybe next or later)
Before this, i was cracking my head between PB 12" and iBook 12". Finally, i have a deep thought and decided PB is the one for me. Then again, being indecisive about the size of it (12" or 15"?). And because the outlook is the next i'm concern after performance and storage wise; i chose PB 12" as both the size works the same functions, however the price of this two size differs in 2grand. The thing is, i'm happy with my PB 12" and am lovin' it each day. So, do a survey and make a wise choice before hand okay..
    G'day =)

  • Gaming: MacBook or PowerBook?

I am an online gamer and is looking for a laptop that has good video card and 3-D processing speed. Which one, the new MacBook, or the old PowerBook, has better speed and graphic for gaming?

The macbook will definitely be a better Gaming laptop because of its faster processor and new Ati X1600 card. However, i dont think we'll see many games soon that will support the universal Binary.

  • Is there a difference in Airport between MacBook and PowerBook?

My husband has MacBook Pro and I have PowerBook G4. He is able to obtain wireless at times when I am not. Is there a difference in the Airport cards? I am considering purchasing the MacBook and wonder if this better technology, etc.?

We have the same problem at our house. My Powerbook connects with no problem while my wife's MacBook Pro loses the connection periodically. I've heard rumors that the latest Airport update may have affected the Macbooks but not the Powerbooks...?
I'm hoping someone fixes this, because my wife works from home and the unstable connection is frustrating!

  • I am having trouble moving mail and and firefox profiles to Macbook from Powerbook

I just inherited a cool late 2008 aluminum Macbook with Lion.  But I can't seem to get my Mail to move over or my Firefox preferences.  I tried the steps for moving mail:  copying and pasting the keychain, mail and mail preferences files.  Nothing happened. I've started now to set up the old way (ie setting up the accounts as if they were new) but know this is not a good idea.
Trying to get something to work, I tried to move over my Firefox profile by copying the file into the same place on the new computer as old. Nothing.
In both Mail and Firefox, I can see the new files, but they aren't being read.
Stupidly, I did not copy the old files before I pasted the new.
Should I just start over and reload Lion??
    I'm so frustrated!
    Thanks for any help.
    Anne

I also see that it seems to be moving all of the mail over from my gmail account.  I didn't mean to move everything out of gmail to this computer!  Now what do I do??

  • MacBook and Powerbook knocking each other of WiFi

    Hi
I Have just purchased a 17 MBP and have discovered that I cannot have my old 17 inch Powerbook connected to the same wf fi network at the same time as the 17 MBP. Both are running the latest version of leopard.
Once one is connected the other one just timesout when trying to join.
I have a Belkin N1 Vision router which works fine with one or other but not both.
Anyone else have this type of problem?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    1) How are they getting their IP number, did you set DHCP on both or have you set a manual number ?
    2) What sort of security are you using ?
    3) Did you copy the settings from the old to the new using Migration Assistant ?

  • Macbook vs powerbook 12"1500 1,25 Gb

    Hello,
I am about to buy my first mac, well actually my second. My first one was a quadra (very old!).
I am not sure wich notebook wil fit me. I am about to begin my study audiovisual design and I want mac because that's the standard. I want to work with audio editing programs and also Ableton Live, adobe after effects, premiere, photoshop and maybe final cut. I read somewhere else that the macbook isn't that good for working with final cut pro.
I could buy a 12"PB1,5 Ghz 1,25 Gb for 1100 euro, but a NEW MB is about the same price and a lot faster (I suppose). But I read that the MB will not run adobe programs until next year.
Can anyone help me make my final decision??
    I really appreciate your posts,
    Jurriën

If you really serious with your carrier, than take the higher specs, which is Mac Book Pro, from $ 1999 to $ 2799.
Better GPU with dedicated memory, bigger and better screen view, and more future expandable option, like upgrade the HD to 7200 rpm not to mention the express card.
Mac book is for beginner or an advanced user with semipro or light usage application like Photoshop element, ilife, etc, but for serious application go with the pro, forget the PB 1.5 Ghz G4, it will become obselet within 1 year, while the big software design and music developer will port their newest software and or updater to universal to support intel mac.
And don't be ashamed with your quadra, I still have my pizza box (LC475) up and running.

MacBook Pro is 15.4" SIG. Though the MacBook non-Pro itself is 13.3 inches.
Photoshop was the key word here. Photoshop has not been fully optimized for use with the MacBook or MacBook Pro, but with maxing out the RAM, you can avoid too much of a slowdown. Get at least 2 GB of RAM, and you'll be doing very well. For most everything else, MacBook Pros are definitely more powerful. Read the specs and you'll see almost everything is faster and better on the MacBook Pros. The MacBook non-pro is really a consumer machine and not a machine for serious Photoshop work, though for regular non-serious Photoshop work it is fine.
Watch out about refurbished Macs, you often get less than you would when buying new, and many try to cheat you out of what you would get when you buy new. See my FAQ* http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html

  • Mini DVI port on MacBook changed

I have been using Mini DVI to VGA on my PowerBook (12 in) for several years, now. I just purchased the new MacBook (Black) and find that the adapter does not fit into the DVI port! When looking on a couple of retail website, including Apple, I find only the adapter that fits MacBook and PowerBook 12 inch. How do I find the proper mini DVI adapter?

That's kinda strange that the adapter for your Powerbook (12 inch) doesnt't fit on your Macbook, since the description says it does. Is your Powerbook one of the last that was released?
You can get one from BestBuy (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8424378&st=dynexmini-dvi+dviadapter&lp=3&type=product&cp=1&id=1181832624276) or the Apple Store (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=520 F02E0&fnode=home/shopmac/macaccessories/displays&nplm=M9320G/A).
