MacBook Waking From Sleep Inside Case

Hello all,
Three times now my wife has opened her notebook case to find her new MacBook running with the lid closed, incredibly hot, fans blowing. I have read various reasons on the discussions, from System Preferences to faulty logic boards, with no clear winner.
Anybody care to weigh in on whether or not the movement of the MacBook in the carrying case coupled with a screen protector wedged between screen and keyboard could open the lid just enough to wake it from sleep without allowing it to return to sleep?
Just a thought. In the meantime, its back to the genius bar...
Thanks all,
D
MacBook 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

actually something similar happened to me too when i walked out of the apple store. i noticed my bag was getting hot so when i investigated i found my white macbook cooking in the bag with the fan blowing, but the strange thing is that i could swear i turned it off, but i noticed that sometimes i close the lid too soon while its closing and it doesnt turn off completely and the light stays on. but since then it hasnt had this problem when i carried it around. i recently replaced it with the black macbook and so far so good on this. but with all these constant threads regarding random shut downs and logic board problems, im starting to get a bit worried, especially since i have my mac running dual operating systems. but anyway, see if the macbooks indicator light comes on after closing when it supposedly shuts off, i always look for it now.

  • Mid 2009 17" MacBook Pro battery shutdown issue when waking from sleep.

My unibody 17" MacBook Pro occasionally shuts down on waking from sleep when it isn't plugged in.
When I open the lid to wake it I can hear the hard drive and fans starting to spool, and then the next second it's off and silent. The laptop doesn't mind being turned on again after it does this and might go a week without doing it again, equally it might do it next time I try and wake it from sleep. It does this regardless of battery charge level.
coconutBattery says the battery still has 86% of its designed capacity, and I haven't noticed anything else untoward regarding battery charging or performance when in use.
So my question is two fold:
    1) Does it sound like the battery's internal processor is malfunctioning, or could it be something else?
    2) If it is the battery's internal processor, will replacing the battery replace the processor, or are they fitted separately (in defference to the 'internal' part of its name)?
    Cheers,
    James
nb. just in case it makes any difference, the laptop is a 17" Mid-2009 MacBook Pro, 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo with 4Gb Ram running OSX 10.7.3

I have had issues when i press the space bar from sleep, sometimes it wakes but others i'm forced to power it on with the power button.
Is this similar to anything you've experianced?
Its so inconsistantly these days, but i'm also connected to an external screen.

  • Macbook pro 2010 crashes after waking from sleep

    Hi,
I upgraded to mountain lion a month or so ago and ever since my MBP often crashes after waking from sleep.  I've included the error report below. Any help would be appreciated.  After it restarts, it works fine.  Problem consistently happens after waking from sleep.
    Thank-you

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

  • Macbook Air 2014 Black Screen w cursor after waking from sleep.

I just purchased a brand new macbook air this past week. I noticed within the first day of using that if my machine went into sleep mode, and I hit a key to take it out of sleep mode, it would go to a black screen with my cursor for about 30 seconds.
It does not do it every time but enough that it is annoying. I am coming from a mid 2011 mac air that did not have any issues. (only replaced for all day battery)
Do you think this a hardware or software issue? If i swap this mac out do you think I will just encounter the same thing?
I have read numerous posts regarding waking from sleep issues but they all seem to be affecting MacBooks purchased between 2012 and 2013.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Nick

    UPDATE:
I called apple tech support and after talking a bit decided best course of action was to replace the macbook air as I was inside my 14 day buyers remorse.
I came home and hoped all was well when this one began doing the same thing. I made an appt with the genius bar to dive further in to this and we did a complete wipe on the computer and reinstalled the OS. The "genius" said I'm probably bringing something over from my previous mac air. (even though it never had this issue).
So after completely reinstalling the OS and setting up my macbook as new I pretty much lost all my settings and what not accumulated after 3 years with my previous mac. They did use Time Machine to at least bring my iPhoto library over and iTunes music.
It has been exactly one day since this was completed and the computer is doing the exact same thing. ***!!!

My Macbook Pro 15 inch takes several minutes to be able to connect to the internet after waking from sleep.  Does anyone else have this problem and is there a fix?

The message that comes up when I click on "TomTom Home Install" is "You cannot open Home Install because Power PC applications are no longer supported." Does this mean that the TomTom, which is absolutely vital to my life - well, not literally but you know what I mean - can no longer be used with my MacBook Pro?
What that means is that is can't be used with Lion 10.7.  PowerPC was the chip Apple used up until 2006 when they switched to Intel.  At that point, they created the Rosetta emulator to allow for PPC support for 5 years.  They finally dropped the support with the release of Lion.  It will only work with OS X 10.6 or earlier.  The other option is to purchase a new GPS, which can be had for $100 for a decent one.

  • Is there a way to disable previously viewed iMessages from appearing as Messages notifications when waking my MacBook Pro from sleep?

Is there a way to disable previously viewed iMessages from appearing as Messages notifications when waking my MacBook Pro from sleep?  Regardless of whether I am using iMessage from  my iPhone or iPad, when I open my MBP, I get attacked by Messages notifications for iMessages I've obviously already seen or responded to.  Is there a way to change this?  Are others having this issue?
Additionally,  previous iMessages sent or received from those  devices sometimes don't populate into the Messages window on the MBP.  I haven't been able to identify when or what causes this; sometimes it just doesn't seem to work (and I verified that the messages sent/received were, in fact, iMessages and not SMS).
Thanks - any help or insight would be appreciated!

First you need to determine what laptop model you have; then we can help you. A Mac Book Pro cannot run OS 9.1.
With your Mac booted up, click on the  at the far left of the menu. Then click on About This Mac. It will show what version of OS  you are running. What is the version?
A MBP will be running something like version 10.x.
If you are running version OS 9.x, you don't have a Mac Book Pro.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 2013 not waking from sleep

    Hi all,
My brand new 15" Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013) is not waking from sleep. It doesn't occur after a short sleep (as I can wake it as normal by moving my mouse), but if the sleep is for some extended duration (not exactly sure, but at least within a couple of hours) then the only way to wake it is to use the power button.
I've tried an SMC reset to no avail -- the problem still occurs.
It's plugged into a power adapter and this is a screenshot of the settings page.
This is a very annoying issue. I'm hoping someone can help?
    Thanks!
    Adam

I managed to narrow down and reproduce the issue:
It occurs when the 'turn display off after' time lapses. Eg, if I change the setting to 1 minute and wait for the display to turn off, the computer will *not* wake up without pressing the power button.
Very strange. Hoping someone can provide some insight!
    Thanks,
    Adam

  • Macbook pro screen dims after waking from sleep?

Does anyone know why my macbook pro screen dims when waking from sleep or waking from my screen saver? I can't get it to stop doing this. Thanks.

It sounds like I have the same thing happening. It's more like the colors are washed out, like there is less contrast. I have a hot corner set up for my screen saver. Once I activate the screen saver for a second and then deactivate it, the Macbook screen goes back to normal. I have a 30" Samsung 305T monitor set up as a second (main) screen for when I'm working at home, which is most of the time. I haven't had it unplugged from the Macbook since this started, so I don't know if it happens by itself. I do know that the Samsung looks fine when waking up from the screen saver at the same time.
I tried to find others with this problem in this forum, but got tired of looking through all the other posts that had nothing to do with this problem.
    Can anyone help us?

    Arthur.

    Hi, arthurpacifico.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are a couple troubleshooting steps that I would recommend trying to see if it corrects this issue.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If the issue persists, try the troubleshooting steps I have attached below.
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
After waking from sleep or starting up, your computer may not show that it is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
After start or wake, your computer may indicate that it is connected to a network, but does not connect to the Internet.
    Solution
Use these steps if your computer does not automatically connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Check your TCP/IP settings in the Network pane of the System Preferences. Click the "Renew DHCP lease" button
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
Choose Network from the View menu.
Select Wi-Fi, then click the Advanced button in the lower-left hand corner of the screen.
Click the TCP/IP tab from the top of the screen.
Click the "Renew DHCP lease" button.
Select the Wi-Fi tab and view your Preferred Networks list.
Select each network and click the minus sign to remove those networks from your Preferred Networks list.
Click OK and close the Network preferences.
Remove your stored network passwords using the Keychain Access Utility.Restart your computer.
Open Keychain Access from /Applications/Utilities. Your window will look like this:
Remove your AirPort network passwords from the login keychain: Select the "login" keychain from the Keychain sidebar. Click the "Kind" column to order the list of keychain items by their type. Remove all entries of the kind: "AirPort network password".
Remove your AirPort network passwords from the System keychain: Select the "System" keychain from the Keychain sidebar. Click the "Kind" column to order the list of keychain items by their type. Remove all entries of the kind: "AirPort network password".
Note: The above steps will remove your Wi-Fi network passwords. If you do not know them, or if your network does not use passwords to restrict access, you should contact your network administrator.
Join your Wi-Fi network. You will need to enter your password for your network again if it requires one.

  • Macbook Pro restart after waking from sleep

    Hi all,
Since I've installed Mountain Lion (10.8.2) on my 13" Late 2011 Macbook Pro I've been experiencing a quite annoying problem. The computer, which is connected to an external monitor through Thunderbolt to HDMI will restart (Sometimes to a gray screen with a progress bar) after waking from sleep. I've done some research and it would appear as though the problem is related to the display driver.
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this peculiar problem or if there's a quick solution.
    Thanks!

Maybe this will help. If you monitor the "More Like This" box, other solved threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads.

  • Macbook Retina with Mountain Lion issues after waking from sleep.

Macbook Retina with Mountain Lion has the spinning beach ball of death after waking from sleep a few times. Anyone else seeing this?  A fresh boot is very quick, but waking from sleep lags at times.  Then after a few times the spinning beachball of death appears and nothing is responsive making me reboot the machine.

I've been suffering from this too, and am currently trying this:
    http://www.ewal.net/2012/09/09/slow-wake-for-macbook-pro-retina/
Seems to be tied to this 'Power Nap' feature.  I tuned it for 12 hours instead of 24.

  • Macbook issues: waking from sleep & odd sounds

Hello, I've had my macbook for about three weeks now and have experienced this waking from sleep problem several times. Simply what happens is I open the lid and the screen turns on, but all that comes up is the rainbow coloured circle, has anyone else had this problem?
Also rarely when a sound is played like emptying the trash the speakers make an odd crackling noise, and after that if you mute the speakers you get no sound but still noise.
Finally where can I put in the suggestion for frontrow, I'd like to be able to play music in frontrow from my ipod when connected, you can get to shared libraries but not a conncted ipod :/
    Any help is appreciated!

happened again this morning, this time (though this has happened before) all usb ports become unuseable. the trackpad was still useable and i tried to reboot but the system froze.
this seems to happen mostly when its running on battery

  • Macbook pro not waking from sleep

HELP! My macbook pro (2010) is not consistently waking from sleep. I will put it on sleep, then when I open the screen, it will not wake up. I have to press the power button to completely turn it off, then press it again to wake it up. An error message shows saying that it had not been properly shut down. Any ideas on how to correct this problem?

    Hello alicool,

  • Serious problems waking up my MacBook Pro from sleep mode

I have quite frequent problems waking my MacBook Pro from sleep mode - often it results in either a black or a totally scrambled screen and only a hard reset will cure the problem (for this time). I have tried to pinpoint whether a certain program that I use last before putting the computer to sleep is responsible, but all attempts so far have failed. The error seems random, but is very annoying since one in about three or four wake-up actions are affected!
I use Parallels Desktop during the day running Windows XP, and in the evenings I use mainly Safari and Mail under OSX. The only other program always open is Mori - a notes/information management tool.
Anyone with similar problems? Any advice??
    Cheers,

    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello,
I was browsing the 'downloads' section of the Apple support page and I saw a firmware update that might help you out.
It is called the "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2" and it is supposed to fix "several Boot Camp, start up, and wake-from-sleep issues on MacBook Pro computers."
    The web address is ( http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproefifirmwareupdate12.html )
If that doesn't fix it call Apple care.
    Good Luck.

  • Start up and waking from sleep problems. early 2011 macbook pro i-7 2.0

Been having problems with my computer starting up and waking from sleep.  If i shut the lid it wont wake up upon reopening the lid unless i hit the power button.  After hitting the power button it will restart automatically and you hear the chime and the cdrom ejecting , once the gray screen pops up it restarts again this time you hear the cd rom making the ejecting sound twice then it will start up as normal.  Once it finally starts up my date and time has been reset to jan 2008.  Other times when i open the lid hit the power button it does nothing at all.  Even holding the power button for multiple seconds to force shut down it does nothing.  Only way to get it to start up at that power is if i connect the charging cable.  I have tried reseting the smc multiple times with no results and pram(even though it doesnt have anything to do with start up problems just did it anyways).  It all started i last time i updated not completely sure what all updates i got but im still running 10.7.  It seems like a battery issue which would make sense since its nearly 3 years old and i use it extensivly.  Last thing that just started recently after i go threw the whole mess of getting it to start up if i pick it up or nudge it the thing will just shut off out of no where.  Almost like there is a short somewhere, cant really be sure if its linked with the waking up from sleep/start up problems but seems right up the same ally.  Any suggestions to what could be wrong would be greatly apreciated.  Im assuming my battery may be on its last leg but the thing still holds a charge and my battery life hasnt dimished at all so cant really be totally sure.  Thanks agian

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. It may not fix the problem but it would be the first thing an Apple Store would do if you were to bring it to them with this complaint.
If bumping the Mac causes problems it's an intermittent internal connection that the SMC reset is not likely to help.
    Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light will cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
