MacBook want start, beeps once, black screen

My 2008 MacBook was beeping 3 times so I took it in, they said I needed a new stick of ram. So I bought a new stick of ram and now my  MacBook has a black screen and beeps once. Please help, this is getting frustrating and the apple store near me is too crowded. I was turning on my computer to download the snow leopard software, so I have the software before that.

One tone or three tones indicate issues with memory.  Did you take your MacBook to an Apple store for diagnosis and buying memory or to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or someone else?
First thing I would do it to reseat the memory ... just pull it out then put it back in. If that doesn't change the symptom, pull the memory card out (assuming you only hve one) and put it in the other slot. If you have two, reverse them. If you have two try one at a time.
Related to your post, you can't download Snow Leopard. You can only obtain it to install via DVD, however, once installed, you can then obrtain the updates online (via Software Update) to take it to 10.6.8 (the latest/last release).

start up to black screen 2011 15" macbook pro does the start up chime and apple screen, then to a black screen, mouse arrow is visible and keyboard lit. help please

I had the same issue with my Macbook Pro too. You can follow this steps below:
    1. Shut the computer down by holding the power button for 10 seconds
    2. Restart the computer and press shift at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving
    3. Once you reach the point where your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password, then hit Enter.
    4. After a moment, you should see the spinning beach ball
    5. Your screen should then move on to something along the lines of "Completing OSX Installation" (I can't remember the exact wording). Let it finish. After that it should go to your normal desktop and the issue should be fixed. (If your screen goes pitch black during this process, hit the space bar. I thought it wasn't working, but the screen was just sleeping).
Apparently it's an issue with an automatic update that never quite got past the login screen.
    Hope this helps!

If you replaced the Ram in your machine at any time, you may not have been aware of the fact that Apple computers have always been a little picky when it comes to 3rd party Ram.  Apple computers have always run very well on 2 different brands.

  • 2 Loud Beeps and Black Screen.  What could be wrong ?

I have a white macbook 13 inch i bought back in march 2008.  I spilled liquid on my computer recently and replaced the topcase there was no liquid damage to the hard drive or any other parts.  It worked fine at first.  Then when i started it a black screen comes up and i hear loud beeps?  seemed to come in sets of 2. Maybe bad ram? maybe i put the cards it the wrong slots? would that cause this problem?

Have you tried booting the computer with only 1 stick of ram?
first try the one stick of ram in the left slot.
if it still beeps twice on boot, you could try moving the stick of ram to the right slot.
if it still beeps twice. You could try the using only the other stick of ram.
First try the left slot, then try the right slot.

  • T60 exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen

    Hello all,
i own a thinkpad t60 with ATI radeon x1300 graphics card. I read through your complete "T61p exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen" thread and I have the same beep problem with my t60. Let me briefly explain you how the beeps occur in my system:
My t60 had this problem after I initally formatted my system and this 1 long and 2 short beeps used started occuring. But the strangest fact is that after those beeps and blank screen, the power light in the indicator light group is on along with battery and ac power lights. But then when I repeatedly switched on and off the system, the sequence of beeps dont occur all the time. Then I completely switched off the system and when I booted the next times I started pressing the ESC keys after pressing the on button. Most of the times ( 8 out of 10 times), the first 4 times it produced the same beep codes but after the 5th time, the system turns on.  All those 5 times, I kept on pressing the ESC key once I powered on the system.
Also, every time I'd a chance I did run the pc doctor to find any pro blem with the board or video card, but every time it turned out to be fine. So now, every time I turn my system off or use a stanby/hibernate whichever turns the screeen off, on immediate reboot it comes out blank but with the power indicator light on.
Here by I also list any changes that I'd made:
    1. I reformatted the system and only then this started to occur.
    2. after reformatting lsat time, I forgot to change the boot sequence but now I;d fixed that by pressing F9 under startup in bios.
    3. I'd also once replaced my RAM with a different one (have 4gb now, but I suppose t60 can support a max of 3gb). WIll this be a problem?
    4. And in the recent times due to the ati3duag.dll BSOD has occured. Any idea what this error might be due to?
    5. Due to all these uncertainities, I havent updated tot he latest ATI driver which is 8.593 * and I still have the 8.293* . Will updating to the new one be a problem?
I appreciate any help or guidance you can give me in this matter and I badly need to fix it for my projects.
    Thanks
    Vishak

I think your best way of diagnosing this is to remove the new ram and install only one chip, if the problem persists, try the other. If the problem persists, then I'd try booting from a Linux LiveCD (any will do but I'd recommend ubuntu.com). boot with the option to not change anything on your PC. If you get this same problem when booting linux, then you know it's a hardware problem, in which case I'd remove as much hardware as possible, drives, cards, etc... if it still persists, then you most likely have a bad system board. In this unfortunate event your best option would be a used one. A new one would cost more then the laptop is worth, but used T60 boards are pretty reasonable, I just found one for another member and could probably help you find one to if necessary, but lets hope it's just a ram chip. And by the way, your system is limited to 3GB, but in the chipset, and in your 32bit OS they came installed with. You can install 4GB, but it won't be able to use it all.

  • My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update

My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update. It ran beta 5 great but failed on restart after beta 6 install. There is no cursor but I can hear the HDD spooling up. I have tried booting in safe mode, PRAM reset and SMC reset but nothing works. After the first 5 days of every now and then trying to start it, it started fine. I used the machine all day with no problems, it had rolled back the install and was back on beta 5. I decided to try the update again, the same thing happened and it has stayed black for over a week now. It wont work with a monitor either. Help!

    Hello Adam,
I would try instead of installing the beta software, to install the official build of OS X Yosemite from the Mac App Store to see if that gets you passed the no video issue when updating the beta software.

I tried several times to turn it on but there is no reaction and when I connect it with pc, I mean with itunes also dead not detecting the device. with very best regards
    WAQAR

    Hi,
Try connecting your iPod to your computer and letting it charge.  It will take a while for iTunes to recognize it, if it is dead.  Once iTunes recognizes your iPod, try resetting it again.
    Hope this helps!

  • N97 camera won't start(just a black screen)

My N97 camera won't start just a black screen  this issue since the update to the new firmware

ooooooooops so sorry about this, here it goes and start with the first code.
With all these operations I recommend you TAKE OUT MEMORY CARD and DO A BACK UP OF YOUR STUFF!!!
    1. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data)
Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345
    2. *#7370# - Reformat your phone (out of the box, tho keep in mind that most newer nokia phones at least n series, e series and s60 based phones have udp - user data preservation so not ALL data may be lost. still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)
    3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
hard reset - hold the following buttons *, 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. ) For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE while holding the power button. Again do not let go until you see the handshake screen.
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.
You know what I love about you the most, the fact that you are not me ! In love with technology and all that it can offer. Join me in discovery....

  • My MacBook Air won't start up, only black screen no logo

I've had my MacBook Air since Christmas 2014. I have not spilt anything on it, I have not dropped it and the charger isn't broken.
Yesterday my computer wouldn't turn on, it was working the day before so I don't know why this was happening. When I turn on I mean:
    Press the turn on key
I hear the chime for it to turn on
    then all of a sudden
no logo only black screen and then nothing after it.
I really don't want to reset it because it has all my school work on it and very important pictures on it.
Is there anyway we can fix it? I've looked on this website many times and others and nothing has really helped.
If you have anything new please reply ASAP.
I need this fixed within 2 weeks.
    Thank you.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Alternatively, see:
Reinstall OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Choose the version you have installed now:
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • T61p exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen

    All,
There have been multiple discussions over the past months concerning a 1 long and 2 short beep symptom on some T61 and T61p model systems.   Over the last several weeks members have begun to start additional topics on this theme and cross post between threads.
I am consolidating all the threads into this new discussion today.  Since many of these discussions were originally parallel, the dates and some of the context will now appear somewhat out of chronological order.  Please keep that in mind while browsing this thread.
If you are presently experiencing the 1 long and 2 short beep code with a black screen on boot up, I would recommend that you contact service at this time for assistance.
    UPDATE 1/4/2011
Previously, I have advised customers to contact service for assistance with the symptoms discussed here. In an effort to maintain customer satisfaction and loyalty, Lenovo has repaired a number of systems as post warranty exceptions. Lenovo will continue the post warranty support; however, with some revisions to the extended coverage effective December 31, 2010.
Customers who experience these symptoms on qualifying models that are no more than six months beyond expiration of warranty should continue to contact support for assistance. This additional coverage ends March 31, 2011.
Coverage beyond this date is available under the terms and conditions of extended warranty or maintenance agreements. Warranty extensions may be purchased for systems that are still within the base warranty period, and post warranty maintenance agreements may be purchased to provide coverage after base and extended warranty periods have expired. Extended warranties and maintenance agreements are a great way to ensure coverage for all the major system components.
    Best regards,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

2 is a coincidence, 3 is a pattern... and your problem is identical to mine, too, and happened just some days after mine did...
It seems to me, without wanting to be alarmist, that the T61p with the 570M gpu (or a batch of them) is failing with the same exact problem (1 long 2 short = GPU error) at the exact same time... scary thought, really.
Mine arrived at the lenovo repair center (it's still on warranty) on wednesday, and the status shows as "Repair complete, shipped to customer" as of yesterday. There is no tracking number or "Failing Element / part number" in the status page, tho. It hasn't arrived, either.
Do you know your planar card / motherboard part number? It would be interesting to know if it's the same as mine (42W7653). Were you affected by the problem shown at http://forum.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=30460&view=by_date_a... ?
And once Mark_Lenovo reads this, Mark, do you need any info? (serial number for the laptop, easyserv reference, etc?)
    EDIT/UPDATE:
I called the EasyServ warranty customer support to ask if they had any additional info not in the website, and as a matter of fact they do. The (very, very helpful and nice) man on the phone told me that the motherboard had been replaced and the laptop was due to arrive today, and he gave the UPS tracking number for it, which indeed says it's scheduled to arrive here today, at some point.
Once it's here I'll update with information about the actual repair and the part number of the new motherboard, etc.
To be honest  I'm more than pleasantly surprised about the service: the box for shipping my laptop arrived on wednesday, it was picked up that very same day, the laptop was repaired on thursday and arrives to me today, friday. If the laptop works as expected, this is a 10 out of 10 for lenovo customer support, at least for me.
I'm less-than-happy about the quality of the product, of course, but at least I got the 3-year warranty so lenovo paid for everything.
