MacBook White Screen

Ok I turned on my computer today and the screen on my MacBook is white. I hear it start up but the screen never changes it just stays white. I hooked up my MacBook to my 20 inch Cinema Display the Cinema Display works but the MacBook stays white. In the Display options I do NOT have it set to mirror so if I move my mouse over to the MacBook screen it disappears then will reappear when i bring it back to the cinema display. The OS is running fine as far as I can tell, I just cant see it on my MacBook screen. Any help?

Wind, what did you do/say when you went down to the store? I was told they had never seen anything like it and they just wanted me to send it in to Apple...I got a call back form the store manager two days later saying he was sorry for the bad time I had (it was my 2nd time down there, and it's a 2-hour drive one way) and he would give me a discount...and he did no such thing, in fact, he quoted me a price higher than what the "Genius" quoted me. Here are pics, before the "pinching", and after:

  • Restarted my Macbook White screen?

I was browsing the internet and realized I was on the wrong wifi.  Upon attempt to switch, I got the spinny beach ball of death.  After several minutes, i had to power down in an attempt to unfreeze it.  When I turned my computer back on, all I got was a white screen, no apple.  I have tried restarting, restarting pressing option, restarting pressing shift, all to no avail.
It is very important to me to get to a place where I can at least transfer files to an external HD, as I have unbacked-up wedding invitation designs that I have spent hours on (through many headaches).

What version MacBook Air do you have?  Usually identified by the year you bought it, i.e. mid-year 2012, 2011, etc.  Also, what OSX are you running?  (please provide OSX ver number, i.e. 10.8.2 for latest Mountain Lion, etc.)
Not sure I can help you directly but for others to lend a hand, they'll need to know this information to make a sound suggestion.  I see you're new to posting here so this will help you in the future.
    Good luck.

  • Older Version MacBook White Screen During Use

My MacBook (early 2009) keeps getting a white screen during use for anywhere from 15-90 seconds. Is this normal? What can I do to fix it? Or is the computer just too old and I should get a new one?

I have 24 inch iMac and I get either an almost black screen/white screen or sometimes a green and white vertical pinstriped screen. This happens suddenly with no warning & I have to hold the start button in to shut down. It then starts up fine with apparently no harm done. It is very annoying but I need to know why my Apple is doing this. Computer is around 2-3 years old and now running 10.6.8. I had to buy this as when I inherited the machine know one knew where the OS software was.
Does anyone rate Genius bar - can they determine what the prob is? I took a G5 tower in as it wouldn't start but they were unable to help - local PC shop sorted it charging me £100 - realised later it needed a new battery (£7) so you can't rely on anyone out there I'm afraid!
I will need a new iMac 27 inch anytime soon but am loath to give anyone currently selling machines the money!

  • Spilt beer on macbook/white screen

    Hello,
I am in need of some help/advice. An unknown(although not too much) amount of beer got spilt onto my macbook this evening. The screen is now completley a gray/white color and that is all it does. I have as of now turned off the computer completley, removed the battery and letting it dry with a fan blowing on it from not too far away. If anyone has any suggestions or can help in this matter please feel free to post. Thank you

    Welcome to the discussions!
First of all, get one of these
No spillage - unless you pass out - LOL!
Seriously, let the MB dry completely before attempting to power it on. Many times it is not the liquid itself that does than damage, but the electrical shorts when someone tries to power up a device that has liquid still in it.
After it has been thoroughly dried - and I suggest at least 24 hours - then you can try to power it up and see if it works. If not, then a trip to the local Apple service center is called for. It will likely be expensive and after they give you an estimate, you can decide if the repair is worth it to you or if purchasing a new unit is a better solution.
It may also be covered under homeowners insurance. You may want to check with your agent before doing anything with the repairs.
    Good luck.

  • HT4044 Early MacBook white screen?

  • Macbook White Screen (and nothing else happens after that)

    Hi All,
I have a problem with my wife's macbook (which is exactly 13 months old, Aargh!)
She was having some problem with slow apps etc, so decided to restart, the restart didnt go through so she tried holding down the power button to force shut down.
When she tried to restart it several seconds later, it chimes but it gets stuck on a white/grey screen with nothing on it, not even the Apple logo. Something started whirring louder and louder for the first 2 minutes and it stayed that way for at least 10 minutes++. Note that it shuts off immediately as soon as I push the power button down.
I have tried all the startup key combinations listed on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533?viewlocale=en_US
But other than the Firewire logo showing up when I pressed T down at startup nothing else works, the actual Firewire target disk function didnt work when hooked up to another mac.
I have also tried taking off the battery/AC adapter and holding down the power button method to no avail.
The Macbook itself was bought in the US, but we are now in Europe so the startup CDs are not around, or at least not yet . I doubt it will do miracles anyway...
I know I'd probably have to take it in to an Apple Store to see whats up, but I thought I'd share it here first.
Let me know if anyone have similar experiences..
    Cheers.

Try resetting the PRAM by restarting your computer while simultaneously holding down the Command-Option-P-R keys until the computer restarts a second time.
    Hope this helps

  • My MacBook White Screen Goes Black

I bought the computer two years ago. It worked perfectly well until three weeks ago. First, the trackpad doesn't work properly. Fine, I use a mouse instead. But I can't stand the screen's problem. It doesn't wake up from sleeping. Fine, I don't let it sleep. However, if I shut it down, and turn it on, the screen goes black too! I keep opening and closing the screen to wake it up for at least 10 mins. That's ridiculous. What can I do? I saw someone write that the apple store will fix it for this problem even though the computer's warranty is expired. Is that true?

Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • Stuck on White Screen on Thunderbolt Display Update - Lion

Anyone else have this problem? After the Thunderbolt display update, I get a white screen at the login after I restart my MacBook Pro. I either have to unplug my laptop so I can see the screen again to login, or I can hit enter and then blindly put in my password while he screen is blank and then it will pop back up again. It's annoying.
I didn't have this problem running Snow Leopard and I reset the PRAM and SMC already. This is also a clean install of Lion.

I've actually just posted a similar post on the Thunderbolt thread. Is there anyway to rollback the firmware? This is so frutrating to have to wait so long before actually getting to the login screen.
If the Thunderbold display is unplugged then the MacBook has no problems and instantly goes into the login screen - on the other hand having the Thunderbolt display connected to the MacBook - same as you describe - Power on Macbook - white screen for about 1-3 minutes before the Apple logo appears and proceeds to the login screen
Hope someone can read and sort thins out soon.

  • My MacBook was acting weird so I restarted it and when I login a white screen flashes and goes back to the login page. Help?

My MacBook was acting weird like sometimes I would log on and I wouldn't be able to type my password for a couple seconds, but it usually logged in after that. Then I left my computer open after installing the recent update after that all my applications were not responding. So I shut it down, when I turned it back on about an hour later it went to this loading screen and then to the login like usual. After I tried logging in a white screen flashed and it went back to the login/ password screen like nothing happened. Any ideas on what happened and what I can do to fix it?

    Reinstall OS X;
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can I retrieve files off my MacBook Air that has crashed (White screen flashing folder)?

Besides a few freezes here and there, my MacBook Air has worked fine. However when I opened it the other day, It wouldn't power on. I pressed the power button a few times, and it finally powered on with a completely white screen. I powered it off and on a few times but nothing changed. I figured if I let the battery die, maybe it would work when I charged it again. I left the screen open, but after 10 min, a flashing folder with a question mark popped up, And it's been flashing ever sense. I took it to apple, they said it was a software issue. They plugged it into a g-drive to reinstall, along with other cords and got their apple account up, although none of my information showed up. They said the Mac forgot its software, and nothing of mine would show. They said I have to replace the lap top and gave me prices/options. I never got my question fully answered on if I can retrieve my photos, notes, garage band, music, etc. I left apple with out any trade. Does anyone know of any way I can get my pictures, music, voice memos, and notes, back? I'm desperate and have lots of important stuff that I can't access. I'm also losing work not having access to my computer. But I'm not trading it in until I try/or know there is no way to get my stuff back. I will pay anything to get my stuff back! I honestly would rather have my stuff then the computer. And just get a new one. Any advice will help. Thanks!

a flashing folder with a question mark popped up,
Can mean that your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from.
Try restarting while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk and restart.
Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If the disk is not available, then it's failing or has failed.
If you did not backup your important files, an alternative would be data recovery but it's expensive.

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro White Screen of Death?

    Hi all,
I have a Mid- 2010 Macbook Pro, running 10.8.2 that, when booting, sounds the Startup Chime but no Apple logo appears, just a white screen.  I'm in IT so I've done several things, but nothing has worked and I couldn't find a previous discussion that was similar to mine.
Here's what I've done so far:
    - Changed hard drives
    - reseated RAM
    - Unplugged Battery
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Tried to boot from CD using CTRL- C
    - Tried Recovery boot using CTRL- R
Anything else I could try?  I keep thinking it may have something to do with the Time Change, but that seems a little weird to me if that's the cause.  It worked fine late last night and then it did this in the morning (after the time change).
Thanks for any help you can give!

    Hi sanjampet,
Tried the SMC reset, safe boot, CD boot, and Recovery boot all with no luck.  Not sure why it's going on, but it's looking more and more like a hardware issue to me.  It's a white screen (instead of a grey screen), so I'm worried that it's something with it.  I'm going to try and see if I can remote into it using Screen Sharing to see if it's something with the display.
My wife used it last and she told me that it was slow on the internet with the mouse freezing up, so she held down the power to turn it off then it came up with the white screen which hasn't come back on since.  I'm using an 3rd party SSD hard drive and replaced it with another SATA hard drive, but it didn't help.
    Thanks,
    JN
