MacBook (white) to MacBook (aluminum)

I bought the white, plastic version of the MacBook in July. Now that they've come out with a much better model - at least concerning the 3D rendering that I do for school - what is the best way to seek an upgrade?
I was hoping Apple would offer some sort of deal like with the iPhone (original) when the 3G was announced so the iPhone consumers would not be slated to lose money and the satisfaction of a newer model phone.
Anyway, I don't really want to shell out for an entirely new computer having only bought the plastic model in July. I don't suppose the white model will fetch the price I paid because the price was lowered on the Apple Online Store.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately you can never keep up with technology. I felt the same way when I bought my MacBook Pro and got the free iPod nano around August 2007, then a month later they come out with a way better video iPod nano. That's just the way it is, it does suck, I agree, but when you buy new technology, it only stays "current" for so long before something newer and better replaces it.

  • Macbook White vs Macbook Air (Speed)

    Hello Guys,
I am considering purchasing either the macbook white or the macbook air for portability and speed. I'm currently not wanting a Pro because 1) its beyond my budget and 2) it's a bit bulky.
So my question is: What preforms faster in general, the Macbook or the Macbook Air? I plan on doing some casual gaming (Nothing too intense like Borderlands) on it as well. What would be a good option?

thx joey for finishing my thought on that...
it boils down to this: size (small), speed (fast), cost (cheap).
Can only pick 2 which is the most important to the OP? 2nd most important? Probably the best advice I can offer on this. good luck!

  • Moving from Macbook (white) to Macbook pro

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro from a 13" to a 15".  I want to give the Macbook Pro 13" (running Mountain Lion) to my wife who has a white Macbook (running Snow leopard).  I want to transfer her stuff to the Macbook Pro and have her running Mountain Lion with all her stuff.  How do I do this?
I transferred my stuff using Migration assistant, but I am not sure how to do this and have her running Mountain lion.

Connect the two using a Firewire cable. Boot her computer into Target Disk Mode. You can manually copy her stuff from the old computer to the new one.

  • I have the MacBook white and there hasn't been any updates in a while. I need to update to version 10.5 and im still on 10.4.11. Can anyone tell me what to do?

I have a MacBook white and there hasn't been an update for the Mac OS X (10.5). I'm still running on version 10.4.11. can someone tell me why I haven't gotten the update?

Because you must purchase major upgrades. I advise skipping Leopard and going directly to Snow Leopard:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • What is the type of cable do i need for a macbook white to connect to a hdmi cable?

what is the type of cable do i need for a macbook white to connect to a hdmi cable? This is quite a problem since macbook white is not in production anymore.

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.

This is the official specs page
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
Supported models include "MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)."  So your model is more than new enough...  If you currently have Lion, you will be able to download and install Mountain Lion.

  • On e-bay hunt for macbook white battery match

What numbers/letters am I looking for on my mac in System Profiler that match with the same numbers/letters of the
e-bay macbook battery I wish to buy? Or is it all just in "About this Mac"?

It depends on your model. If you have one with the removable battery, every one uses the same battery from 2006 through 2009. That's 6 out of the 9 MacBook models.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibodyyou can find those on eBay at http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=aluminum+macbook++battery+A1278&_sacat=0&_od kw=aluminum+macbook++battery&_sop=12&_osacat=0
Shut down the computer. Disconnect any cords connected to the computer.
    Turn the computer over.
    Locate the access door latch.
Push down to release the latch, this sets it in the open position, and remove the access door that covers the battery.
With the latch still in its open position, gently pull up on the battery tab to remove the battery.
Note: The latch must be in its released, open position to remove or replace the battery and access door.
If you have the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody you need to go to the Apple store for your new battery. Unless you are really comfortable with opening the White Unibody.

  • MacBook White or Aluminium?

Hey, just looking for a bit of advice.
I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to technical computer knowledge and computer specifications, I'll be honest. Actually, I have no idea what the difference between a DDR2 and DDR3 RAM stick is or anything like that, so I was wondering if someone could give me some advice as to whether to go for a MacBook White or Aluminium?
I do alot of film editing for my college course using Final Cut, so that's mainly what I'd use it for, apart from essay writing and maybe a few games, if I can ever afford Final Cut myself. Is one better than the other for video playback and running Final Cut, etc?
The only problem I've found is that the Aluminium one doesn't have a firewire? Which is what I use on the college G5s to upload from the cameras. Can you get USB upload wires?
Anyway, sorry for my lack of knowledge, any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi streetlighthope,
I unfortunately don't know the more technical specifications of DDR3 vs. DDR2 other than the generalities:
1.) DDR3 RAM runs about 30% less power than a DDR2 RAM module
2.) DDR3 RAM is capable of transferring data at 2x the rate of DDR2 RAM module, which allows for faster FSB (Front Side Bus) speeds and higher peak data rates.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM
With that being said, the aluminum MacBook features the DDR3 RAM (however both machines have the 1066MHz FSB) and the white MacBook has the DDR2 RAM.
I know of several coworkers that run Final Cut Studio on their new white MacBooks at 2GB of RAM and are very pleased with the performance, considering the price of the machine. I think, when decided between the two models there are a couple of factors to consider:
1.) How important is FireWire? There is no USB-to-FireWire adapter and some peripherals or devices only work with FireWire. If FW is critical, then you're looking at either the white MacBook or the MacBook Pro.
2.) How important is a backlight keyboard? Seems like a trivial aesthetic "feature" but for some people this is a very important feature of their computer, the white MacBook and 2.0GHz aluminum MacBook do not support this feature.
As with any RAM/CPU/GPU technology, newer is typically better, faster and would allow for more growth potential. However, DDR3 is relatively newer (as compared against DDR2) so perhaps all of it's growth potential and capabilities are not truly known. One additional thing to consider with the RAM choices, is that both machines are capable of supporting up to 4GB of RAM.

  • Macbook White 13'' Top case cracks

    Hi.
I am using Macbook White 13'', late 2009 model, it has got two cracks on the top case (behind the display) on the right and left side, that seems to be a manufacturing problem because I have seen the same cracks on my friends laptop.
Can anyone tell me if there is any replacement program for the case.
    Thanks
    SAJID

There is currently a MacBook Bottom Case Replacement Program but none for the top case.
    Best of luck.

  • Cracks on either side of the hinge on my Macbook White Unibody (purchased mid-2010)

Hi there. My Macbook White (purchased mid-2010) has developed cracks at either end of the hinges, and they are beginning to move up the back of the screen. I am no longer under warranty, and was wondering if they would repair it, and how much it costs?
Also, my friend had a similar problem, and by the by off to university next year so funds are tight, and he, having had to pay £180 recieved a brand new Macbook Pro. I wondered if I would perhaps be able to benefit from the same treatment?
    Cheers.

i had the exact same problem with mine and i hadnt even noticed it ! i took it in to the apple store for another problem that i needed doing and the person serving me notcied it. Now my laptop was out of warranty, but the guy said that they would repair it for free. I thought this might have been a gesture of goodwill as i have had so many problems but when i looked it up, they had done it for alot of people. Plus they did it in one day.
but if you have to pay the bill said
    Display Module                   £150.00
    Hardware Repair labor         £24.00
    VAT                                  £34.80
    Total                                  £ 208.80

  • Scroll lag/high scroll latency (not slow or jerky) MacBook White Early 2009 (MacBook 5,2)

I'm having a strange problem that's not easy to explain. It will probably take one or two reads!
I have two Macs, one has the problem, the other does not:
    2009 MacBook White 2GHz Core 2 Duo - 8GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - NVIDIA 9400M 256MB Dedicated - OS X Lion (HAS PROBLEM)
    2009 Mac Mini 2GHz Core 2 Duo - 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - Intel GMA 950 64MB Shared - OS X Lion (DOES NOT HAVE PROBLEM)
The problem is with scrolling with a mouse wheel or trackpad in various apps, iTunes in Album List display mode is the example I'll use.
I have the same iTunes library with around 4,500 tracks on BOTH Macs.
When I scroll the list initially everything is fine but with repeated consecutive scrolling actions either in the same direction or alternating (with any mouse wheel, magic mouse, built in trackpad or magic trackpad) the response slowly gets further and further behind the physical action to the point where I will stop the physical scrolling action and iTunes continues to scroll mimicing my previous actions (including any slowing, speeding up and direction changes) for 5 seconds or more until it catches up. It's NOT jerky, it just starts to lag behind.
The strange thing is that if I open another app (like Terminal), move it completely out of the way so that the entire iTunes window is visible but the other window still has focus and then scroll the iTunes window without it in focus there is no delay at all and the responses map the physical scroll actions 1 to 1.
I did have MagicPrefs installed but have uninstalled it. I've tried shutting all apps asside from iTunes and it makes no difference. I've tried an SMC reset, no joy. There are no repeating messages in console.
Any ideas? It's bugging me a lot.
    Thanks!
    Marc Roberts

Compare what's going on in Activity monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity.monitor.app) when you are getting the delay and when you scroll withoud delay with a different input window selected.
Do the same with your mac that doesn't have the problem, and see if there's any obvious differences. Post back here any processes that are consuming a lot of CPU time, and the page in/outs/swaps.
