Macbook will not power up after software updates

I got my White macbook last week.
This afternoon, I ran a software update which had 6 items including iTunes 8 and OS X updates to 10.5.5.
I left the software update running and upon my return, the Macbook had powered off and I could not power it up again.
Tried everything in the manual and finally called my reseller for an appointment.
I am very surprised that this happened.
Can anyone provide a similar experience or tell me what may have happened?
Thank you.
RJ

iTunes 8 has been known to be killing hard drives on macbooks, so i think that the problem is that your hard drive is toasted/dead. Since its only a week old apple could probably replace it for free for you, but theres a big chance all your data is lost. Also try removing the battery and putting it back in, then start it up. If it starts up but all you see is a folder w/ a question mark it means its corrupt. I would take it to the reseller or an apple genius to check it out (at the apple store)

  • MacBook will not turn on after software update

I updated my MacBook with the newest software update, and now when I boot it up, it stays on the white window with the Apple logo and spinning wheel. After about a minute, it shuts itself down.
    What do I do?

Mine is doing the same thing, I only had 3 updates, and it was frozen in the middle of one, so I shut it off. Although I shouldn't have done that, my computer should still be able to turn back on. I happened to read the updates for once and one was for my HP printer, and the other two were firmware updates, I don't remember specifically what they were though.

  • My brand new iMac will not power up after an update restart, any suggestions?

Any suggestions on why my IMac will not power up after it done a restart?

Try an SMC reset and PRAM reset: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
    If that doesn't help:
See if it will start in Safe Boot: restart holding down the Shift key until you see a grey progress bar, type your admin password when prompted, let it continue to (hopefully) boot. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If that didn't help, try booting into the Recovery HD: restart holding down Command+r and choose Disk Utility from the four choices when they appear on screen. Once DU has launched select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If anything gets changed click on repair disk again until you get a clear pass, restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If you still have problems, give AppleCare a call.

  • Mac will not START UP after software update. Help?

I just updated my 24" iMac to Snow Leopard and also put on the new iLife package.  Everything was working fine, Then i tried to get onto the internet using my Bigpond wifi (usb stick) the software started fine and connected to the internet, but in safari no web page would load. so i clicked on the update software/firmware option for the bigpond wifi usb stick and after several minutes realised everything had frozen.  nothing would respond.i held the power button down,  it shut down.  Now it will not power up. just sitting at the first white screen with the apple and rotating line dial.  I have tried all of the stup options recommended iner manual and removed/replaced te ram.  still no fix..  Can someone please help?

Try starting the Mac with the original DVD that came with the computer, then run disk utility and repair the hard drive also repair permissions.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782

  • Droid Razr will not power on after new update.

I have the Droid Razr and attempted to download the new update this morning.  My phone has powered down and will not power back on.  I have done the forced re-start several times & nothing.  The phone starts to power-up and turns right back off.  My phone was fully charged before I attempted to install the update.

Try holding power + vol up and vol down keys simultaneously (all at the same time).  It should bring you to the bootloader menu, use volume down to go to recovery, press volume up to select it.  An android lying on his back will appear, press the volume up and down keys at the same time, hold for about 5 seconds and release.  Scroll down to wipe data factory reset, use the power button to select it, it will go back to the main menu, scroll down to wipe cache, back to main menu and restart device.  If that doesn't work, try Verizon support on the phone and/or bring it in to your local Verizon store.

  • MacBook Pro not booting up after Software Update ('prohibited' symbol)

    Hi there
I'm having some issues with my (late 2008) MacBook Pro after installing a recent software update: the machine is not booting up, instead displaying the 'prohibited' symbol on the grey bootup screen, thus:
The back story: this morning I ran Software Update and installed the iWork update, the latest security update and the Snow Leopard Graphics Update. This installation apparently went fine, however on the required reboot the computer displayed the above image, and did nothing.
I booted from the Snow Leopard install DVD, fixed disk permissions and repaired the disc, which Disk Utility claimed was successful; the computer still would not boot.
I then rebooted from the Snow Leopard DVD and restored from my most recent Time Machine backup (dated a few days ago, before the software update). This, still, did not do the trick.
As I have never seen this particular issue before, I'm at a loss as to what to try next, partly as I don't really know what the symbol is signifying. Any assistance that can be offered would be very, very useful.
    Cheers in advance!

Thanks for that, I did go looking for it but couldn't find it.
Unfortunately, resetting the PRAM and NVRAM didn't work. Will a reinstallation of OS X make a difference, bearing in mind I've already restored from a Time Machine backup? (I don't know if those clone everything or don't include system files).

  • MacBook will not Power Down / Restart (Or Update)

    Hello Guys,
For some bizzare reason my Mac wont restart or update, not to sure when the problem started as I normally just put it into sleep!
But basically when I click update it says the updates need the Mac to be restarted, I click ok. It basically logs out and goes to the Username screen to login.
Same story when trying to restart/shutdown; just goes to the login screen.
I'm tempted to do a OS Wipe and start Fresh! However it's going to take 3 hours to download the latest OS! Patients isn't my strongest point haha!
    Any suggestions/ideas would be brilliant!
    Many Thanks,
    Jac

    Jac ..
Try Starting up in Safe Mode.  A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so you do need patient.
A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that may help. Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen. From the drop down menu click Restart.
If that didn't work, you need to Lion Recovery  to repair the startup disk if necessary, or reintall the Mac OS X.
For download connection speed information see:  Requirements for reinstalling OS X Lion  at that link.
Reinstalling OS X Lion via Lion Recovery requires broadband access to the Internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection.

  • Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update

My MacBook will not boot up after running Software Update (Security update + Java?) earlier today. I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. I have tried restarts several times and tried to start up from my original system DVD - this makes no difference.
I called Apple support, tried resetting the power and PRAM - still no difference. He had no knowledge of other problems reported; although I note recent post may have same issue.
I cannot get an appointment at my Apple Store before Monday.
    Any suggestions?

Still no success. When I hold down the option key when powering up I get the hard disk icon plus arrowhead (only). When clicking the arrowhead it goes to the gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
This happens both with DVD in slot and without DVD. the DVD image is not coming up on screen. When I start up without DVD the hard disk icon appears promptly. When I start with DVD in the DVD is spinning for a short period before the hard disk icon appears. On clicking the arrowhead to hard disk icon the DVD spins again for a while then stops. Apart from the DVD spinning, both situations result in gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.

  • My ipad will not power on after update. I have tried connecting to computer which doesn't recognize it. I have pushed top and circle buttons at same time. It had a battery charge before it died.  I tried to stop the upload and am afraid it 'crashed'

My first genteration ipad will not power on after update. I have tried connecting to the authorized computer which won't recognize it - does not acknowledge a device is plugged in. I have pushed top and circle buttons at same time. It had a battery charge before it died.  I tried to stop the upload midway and am afraid it 'crashed'

Try putting it into recovery mode.
Connect iPad to your computer via USB while it's turned on.
    Open iTunes
Hold the iPad's Sleep/Wake switch (power button on the top of the iPad) down until the "power off" slider appears.
Power off the iPad completely (wait for the progress spinner to disappear).
Hold the Sleep/Wake switch AND the Home button down for a full 10 seconds.
After 10 seconds (the second time you'll see the Apple logo on the screen) release the Sleep/Wake switch while still holding the Home button.
Continue to hold the Home button for another 10 seconds until the USB connection image appears on the iPad's screen, then release the Home button.
A pop-up message will appear on iTunes saying it has detected an iPad in recovery mode, you must restore...
Click on the "Restore" button and the process will begin.

How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Iphone 4s will not power on after ios 6.1 install

iphone 4s will not power on after ios 6.1 install. Help

This did not help the problem. History of problems that started 3 days ago before 6.1 update:
Problems started with the phone dropping a call I was on. Then the screen had lines across it, then screen turned solid green.
    Powered off the iphone.
Happened again 4 hours later. Dropped call then garbed screen. Powered off then back on all seemed okay.
Applyed 6.1 yesterday in the morning. Phoned died completely last night. Plugged in over night and it came back up this morning.
Phone is still within  1 year warranty. Should I just have Apple replace the phone (Warranty runs out in 2 weeks)

  • MacBook will not power on and no start up sounds

My MacBook will not power on despite having a fully charged battery and the power cord has a green light. I used all of the support suggestions online and spoke with an apple care rep. I was told that it seemed as though it was a power flow issue- the power button is not responding properly. I was also told that it doesn't seem like it is affecting my hard drive since there are also no start up sounds.
My question is, is this problem fixable if I choose to sell the MacBook? And how costly is the solution?

Sorry about Necroing a 1 year old thread but I am having the same issue with the same Model. Laptop went dead overnight, no led indicator of power. Opened the laptop and tested the AC adapter. I get 19.5V exit on the cable. Tested the power connector on the motherboard and getting the same voltage. Capacitator to not seem damaged. Any suggestion on how to troubleshoot this further? I love that laptop
