Macbook will not wirelessly connect to Netgear router...

Hello, I've been trying to sort this problem out with my Netgear DG834GT router for ages now, but I don't seem to be getting anyway. I'm really not a tech whizz, I'd go as far to say I know nothing about computers or networking or anything, so I don't really want to do anything that will make the problem worse.
I'm currently having to use an ethernet cable, which is really annoying. Anyway, when searching wirelessly for available connections, my macbook find the netgear router, and asks me to put in the password, which I do, but it never connects. The weird thing is, if I have my ethernet cable plugged in, then unplug it, wireless works fine but only for a couple of minutes. Turning the mac on and not plugging the ethernet cable in, and any wireless connection is pretty much useless. All the other laptops (non-mac) in my house work fine wirelessly.
Am I missing something?
Cheers!

I've taken a look at your router's installation manual - hopefully this link will work (you can download it from this site):
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/list/kw/DG834GT/sno/1/search/1/session/L3NpZC8 zT1VKS2luaw%3D%3D
If the link does not work, simply go to Netgear support and type in your model number.
In any case, pay particular attention to No. 2 in the instructions. It states that your computer needs to be configured before it'll work with the router and shows how to do that.
(I know this from my (newer) Netgear - it does not like to recognize any device unless I've gone through similar steps).

  • My Macbook will not stay connected to the internet, while my Dell computer works fine. Why? What can I do?

My sister and I both have Macbook Pros that will not stay connected to our internet (wifi). Our dell computers and HP computers in the household work great- but both of the Macs do not stay connected, and often say "you are not connected to the internet". I have saved our wifi name to the computer so it is registered as our home network- but it still will not work fast or stay connected for long periods of time. Is there a setting I need to change, or anything I can do? Very disappointed with how the Mac works with our wifi.

Mac's will have trouble connecting to WEP Encrpyted and/or "hidden" / "invisible " networks.
OpenWEP (insecure) or WPA2(AES) is the only secure standard.

Also make sure the date and time are current and updating to Apple's servers for your location in System Preferneces > Date and Time. Then reboot and reconnect.
If your still having trouble after this, take both machines back to the store for a free evaluation.

  • Iphone will not wirelessly connect to itunes

I have two iPhones, a 4 and now a 4s. The 4s will not consistantly connect wirelessly to iTunes. All phones and computer are on same WiFi network.
I cannot get the 4s to auto-sync to receive downloads. The 4 works fine and was the first phone linked to the iTunes.
.....Can two iphones use one instance of iTunes and one login and password?

  • Macbook will not automaicaly connect to wireless on restart

Whenever i restart my computer, or turn it off/on it will not automatically reconnect to my wireless internet connection. I end up having to click on the airport icon in the menu bar, manualy select the wireless network, and then re enter the password EVERY time i start the computer. This is such an annoying problem. I have done the following so far to try and fix the issue.......
    1. Made sure that when i enter the password the "store password in keychain" option is selected.
    2. Changed the default wareless network to the prefered networks setting with my connection at the top of the list.
    3. Deleted my network from the networks list, deleted kechain entry for network and then re entered all information.
    4. Various other combinations of the above 3.
This is a really annoying problem. It all works fine on my brother machine!! Please help me before my 10 hour old macbook is sent sailing out of my bedroom window to join the pc it replaced. :P
    Thanks guys!

I had tried that earlier and it didnt work for me, or atleast i think i did exactally what your post said. Thing is before i read your post i had already taken the plunge and re installed osx lol. That means there is a possibility that when i did what i thought was the same process as you describe (before i reinstalled os x) i may have missed out one of the check boxes etc. Reinstalling os x worked for me, but to anyone else reading it, try the above instructions first! Sounds alot easire than a full reinstall!
    thanks for the replies!

  • Macbook will not connect to Wifi unless  in same room with router

My daughters 5 year old Macbook will not connect to the internet unless she is in the same room as the router. The internet works perfectly for all the other computers in the house. Has anyone had this issue?

There may be some source of wireless interference. It could be radio interfernce or physical interfernce. You can try changing the radio channel on the network.
Otherwise, the issue would relate to the MacBook computer. Follow HT4628 for some troubleshooting.

  • Macbook will not see wireless network

My new Macbook will not see my wireless network. My Windows 2000 PC, my Ipod touch and my Macbook Pro (jaguar) all see it no problem and work well with it.
I have tried entering the network name manually and it does not work. I have WEP password protection.
The macbook sees and connects to all other wireless networks I've encountered (father-in-law's house, Airport departure lounges, hotspots etc.). The macbook also sees my neighbours networks no problem.
    I am confused, please help.

I am having the same issue, a friend visited with his new Mac Mini, running Leopard, and it would not see the wireless network, that 3 other macs (PowerBook G4, iBooks G4 and G3) running Tiger (10.4.11) and Windows machines recognize without problem.
I'm wondering if the issue is Leopard and 3rd party routers or MY router in particular, as I have a US Robotics 5461, and I remember when a previous roommate replaced her G4 iBook, running Tiger, with a MacBook Intel running Leopard, she also had issues connecting wirelessly.
My friend's Mini had no problem recognizing all the neighbors networks (at least 4 or 5) and I'm pretty sure they are not Mac users with an Airport Base Station.
I was hoping to upgrade my G4 PowerBook (once I get it repaired) to Leopard in the future, but I don't want to lose the ability to connect to my wireless network.
Has anyone running Leopard run into this problem and found a solution?

  • Issues with macbook and wireless compatibility with netgear router

my macbook wireless is extremely spotty with my netgear router at home.
the connection is sometimes very good, but other times, extremely unreliable.
the wireless connection to the router is perfect, 4 bars. and it is actually within 10ft of the router itself.
i use my macbook constantly at my college student center, and the connection to the network and internet is perfect...
is there any way to fix my internet connection in regards to the netgear router?? (all other PC + PC labtops are perfect with it. its just my macbook that has issues)

I have to agree with you.
I have a Netgear Cable Router, my iPhone & my wifes iPhone, my Vista PC & my older Vista Laptop connect with out a problem and are rock solid to boot.
My new MacBook Aluminium seems to be very tempremental at best. Dont get me wrong, i love my new macbook but i am a little unhappy that this is happening. Looking at others on this forum, it seems to be across the board so will happily await a firmware/driver update from apple.
With any luck, this should be resolved shortly.

  • HT1695 I have the 1st generation iPad.  All of a sudden it will not connect to my wi-fi.  It finds my wi-fi, but will not totally connect.  I have done everything...reset network, rebooted router etc and it still will not connect.  Any suggestions?

I have the 1st generation iPad.  All of a sudden it will not connect to my wi-fi.  It finds my wi-fi, but will not totally connect.  I have done everything...reset network, rebooted router etc and it still will not connect.  My other divices are connected....iPhone and 3 Macs.  Any suggestions?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Macbook will not connect period

My macbook will not connect to my wireless internet. In the signal strength it shows that it is connected and receiving a signal, but will not connect to the internet. Other computers in my house are working perfectly fine and connecting to the internet no problem. I have run Diagnostics for the internet on my mac and reset the connection countless times. I have gone to my router settings to make sure everything was fine and it is, I have no clue what to do plz help!!!!

There are couple of things to check out. First, make sure that you are actually connected to your network. If you live in an area that has a lot of wireless signals around, then there is bound to be an un-configured open network that your machine maybe jumping on first. Second, check what i.p. your router is giving you. There are two things this can tell us.
    1. If it is in the self assigned range, which I think is 169.254.0.1 – 169.254.254.254, then there is more than likely a failure in the Macbook's and router's DHCP negotiation (which means the router is not giving the macbook local i.p. address.) Do a web search with these words: linksys wrt54g macbook DHCP
Sometimes Linksys and apple don't play fair.
    2. If the i.p. is in the 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x "range", or subnet to be technical, then make sure all the other computers are on that same subnet. If the macbook is NOT on the same subnet as the others then there is a possibility that there is another network with the same name close to your location. If so, your macbook is more than likely jumping on that network. It is rare that they will show up separate on the airport list. you can eliminate this and even more problems caused by redundant SSID's by just changing the name of your network. If the macbook does have the same subnet, then we are looking at other issues.
Start with this and see how it goes.

  • PC will not automatically connect to wireless network on startup...

Hi all - I have a WRTG54 wirless router with the latest firmware.  Windows XP Home SP2.  I have a mixed network with two wired PCs and one wireless.  The wireless PC will not automatically connect to the network. To connect to the network i have to go to the wireless network properties box and check "let windows automatically configure network"  Once I do this the wirelss PC connects with no problem.  Unfortunatley, whenever i turn the PC off and turn it back on the "let windows automatically configure network" is unchecked and i have to go through the process of checking it again.  I uninstalled the wireless adapter and reinstalled the drivers only and then ran the windows wireless setup wizard but the problem persists.  Any help on this would be much appreciated.!!!! Thanks!!

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Do not let "Windows automatically configure your network".  Instead do the following:
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete your current network (this will remove any old settings).  Reboot computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  It should connect automatically.  If you still have trouble, in the computer, temporarily disable your software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see if that helps.
Some users have reported improved wireless connections by switching to WPA  ( = WPA with TKIP)  encryption.

  • Hi All, My MacBook will not connect to the internet at my apartment.

Hi All, My MacBook will not connect to the internet at my apartment. I live with 5 other people and it works for all of them. It worked for me until about 3 weeks ago. My internet works fine at other places like cafes or other folks' homes.  I've tried many things but am having no luck at all. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them!  Thanks!

Some routers (such as my Netgear) seem to work better if you input your device's MAC address manually while on their online site. That site address should be in the manual and usually starts with something like 192.168.x.x Once on that site, input your Mac's address - a series of numbers and letters i.e. 2f.3c.45.2a.xx.xx (go to Network Preference Pane, select Airport, click on Options: at the bottom it shows "airport ID". I have all my devices listed; with that you can create a special IP address i.e.192.168.1.1, .2, .3, and so on. I've never lost connection using that method.

P.S i;ve heard a comment about the G5 case not being
great for wireless so the cards come with a plastic
antena that connects to the back of the machine - i
never recieved one of these - could that be the
    problem?
Newer G5 PowerMacs don't require the external t-shaped aerial, earlier models do and that is probably the cause of the problem.

  • IPad 3 and iPhone 5 will not stay connected to wifi although I am close to router and have strong signal

iPad 3 and iPhone 5 will not stay connected to wifi although I am close to router and have strong signal. I have to keep joining the network or restarting devices or forgetting network and rejoining it.  As a side note my 1st gen iPhone which I upgraded to iPhone 5 yesterday always stayed connected!

The steps to try would be to:
    1. Restore the iPhone to Factory.
    2. If that does not solve the problem replace the iPhone.
If Verizon is offering to replace the iPhone for free under warranty I would go with that option.

  • MacBook will not turn on, quite clicking sound when connected to power

I cleaned my MacBook with a damp cloth and now the MacBook will not boot. the first time I turned it on after I cleaned it. it turned on and the screen came on the grey apple loading screen, went away for a minute when I came back it had turned itself off.
Now when I press the power button it will not do anything at all, nothing turns on it is as it is dead. I have left it outside in the sun for a couple of days incase any water got into the machine but it still will not turn on.
When I connect the power cord to the MacBook the is a faint clicking sound coming from it.
This machine is about 3 years old so it is out of warranty.
Any suggestions to what it could be ?

This same thing just happened with mine - the clicking sounds like it's coming from the left speaker. I tried an smc reset and also took a look at the logic board to look for anything I might notice. What was the outcome for you - any info would be very helpful!
