MacBook & Windows applications question..

Hello,
I have been a PC user all of my life but I am very seriously considering purchasing a MacBook 13 inch. I will mostly be using the laptop for MS Office and for web browsing, and I know that Office is available for Macs nowadays. However, there are one or two applications I will need to use.
My question, and I am sure you all have heard this many times before: What exactly do I need to purchase/download to do this? I had read that most people use something called Virtual PC, but have read that that program does not work with the Intel Macs...the new Touche commercial though says something about a program called Parallels? I haven't been able to find much info on that though...
My understanding is that I would have to purchase both Windows XP AND Parallels...
1) Is this correct?
2) Where do I find Parallels / cost?
3) Does this work on the Intel MacBook 13 inch laptops?
4) Will just about any Windows application work assuming the specs matchup?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me!!
-T

I have always been a PC user, too, and I have now had my 13"macbook for six days. In addition, I am absolutely no techie, just an average user. I chose parallels after trying boot camp because 1) I can switch back and forth without shutting down; and 2) in parallels I can set up a 2-finger tap right click which is similar to what I'm used to, while in boot camp I had to remember some fancy sequence thing.
It's been absolutely great, I'm thrilled to death with my switch, but it has been far from problem-free and I have even occasionally reached the point where I wanted to fling the macbook from the balcony. But I restrained myself, and after 6 days of 12-hour a day frustration learning a new system, I think I absolutely have the best of both worlds. Already, I'm spending more time on the mac side, with only a few programs left exclusively on the windows side, and I love this machine more than any VAIO I've owned before.
I would say DEFINITELY do it, but remember that you're a bleeding edge pioneer here, especially if you intend to continue to spend time in windows, which most mac users disdain, and it may take a bit of time and patience before everything works the way you want it to. But when it does -- it's quite a rush!!
In conclusion, do it, decide if you want to use boot camp or parallels to run your windows from (there's plenty of discussion of this on the internet), then steel yourself to learn mac OS, and retreat into your windows when it gets too difficult. If you enjoy a challenge, you like to learn new things, and you want a computer that can do what no other can do, you will love this. If you just want something to work seamlessly in the way you are used to doing, then why are you even considering a mac?

  • How can i install windows application (like hislider) on my macbook?

Recently i'm  trying to create html slider plugin for my website. so i intall hislider software in my computer to create stunning image slider. This software is running ok, but i also like to install it on my MacBook.
Can anyone shed any more light?

There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install Boot Camp 4 if you’re running 10.7 Lion http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
or Boot Camp 3 if you’re running 10.6 snow Leopard http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3777. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
      6. Last is Q.  Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs.  It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.

  • You can't open the application "MFI_Simulator.exe" because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS X. Can someone assist. I have Office for Mac 2011 on MacBook Pro 13''.

You can’t open the application “MFI_Simulator.exe” because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS X. Can someone assist. I have Office 2011 on my MacBook Pro, OS X, 10.9.1.

Your Office 2011, though a Microsoft product, is designed to work with OSX the Mac operating system.  Any program/application ending .exe is an executable program for Windows.  It will only work in Windows and is not part of or openable with Microsoft Office.
the application you want to open needs Windows - you have a couple of alternatives:
Open it on a Windows PC
Install a valid version of Windows via Bootcamp (or Parallels or VM Fusion) which will allow you to boot your Mac into Windows where it will function like a Windows PC and you can use it to run the application.
See if the manufacturers of MFI_Simulator have a Mac version available.
Please note that if you follow the second option, then you will need to purchase a copy of Windows (if you do not have one already). BootCamp is free (part of OSX) but Parallels and VM Fusion cost too.  I see quite a few posts from people who buy Parallels and try to run the program under Parallels - this doesn't work - you need to install Windows as well.
    Hope this helps.

I would like to run a stock analysis program called Toolkit 6 on my Macbook Pro, but it only works on the Windows platform.  Is there software that allows me to run Windows applications on the Mac?

Yes it's MS Windows! You will need a license of MS Windows (preferable Windows 7) and from there you can decide on the strategy for running Windows on your iMac. You can use Boot Camp (you already have this) or you use virtualization software such as Parallels or Fusion. For your situation I'd recommend virtualization software. However for only one program I'd do some due diligence to see if there is a OS X version. You can start with the App store or simply use Google to search.

  • How do I install Photoshop 6 on MacBook (Windows & Academic version)

I have been attempting to install Adobe Photoshop 6, made for Windows and academic version. The Mac system always asks me "which application to open this stuff with?" I don't really have an answer to that question. I've discovered a mysterious and cranky program named Disk Utility, in Applications/Utilities. I just am so ignorant about this. (I am a new Mac user, and a multi-media student and artist). A big reason why I bought this laptop, was so that I could do much artistic and photographic work with this thing! I've seen these things called "DMG" files. What the heck is that? Very frustrated! Any help from a knowledgeable Mac person, (knowing Adobe would be a plus!) would be VASTLY appreciated

You need to buy a Mac-Version off Adobe Photoshop!
    http://www.adobe.com/products/adobesupportsOSX.html
Maybe you might also consider to start using a newer version off Photoshop!
It is not possible to run Windows applications on a Mac and vise versa!
The .dmg files are image files! Just like a .iso file on a PC. Most of the applications are packaged in these images. By double clinking on them OSX will mount them on your desktop. Then you can drag-and-drop the application to the Application folder on the Macintosh HD to install them. After installing you can unmount the image and delete the .dmg file. You can see them like virtual installation disk's! Disk Utility is just the application which handles the mounting and unmounting off the .dmg file's!
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!

  • Resolution 1440 x 900 for Windows applications?

I am attempting to use MacBook Pro (15") to run Windows applications. Some of these are written for a screen resolution of 1280 x 1050, but the max available on the MBP is seemingly 1440 x 900. Is there any way around this, short of buying an external monitor or the 17" MBP?

I was thinking of a solution along the lines of, maybe the device handlers could reduce the Windows app image to the lower native resolution, which could then be displayed.

  • LSMW with CI on System i and an additional Windows Application Server 4.70

    Hi together,
I have a really tricky problem to realize a parallel processing LSMW Workload.
In truth it isn't a problem to the parallel processing. It is a problem, how to declare the paths to the input files.
The LSMW is splittet in four steps:
    1. Read data
    2. Convert Data
    3. Creating Batch Input File (IDOCS)
    4. Start Direct Input Program
The first three points are using file in the IFS.
In the 13 points of LSMW there is point " 7 Specify Files" where I can customize paths to the real existing input and output-Files, which are stored at the IFS on System i.
    For example:
Legacy Data          On the R/3 server (application server)
        Materialtexte                  /usr/sap/direct/lsmw/material/matsta_text.txt
    This works fine.
Now we have added a Windows Applications Server in front of the 2-Tier enviroment to have more performance to the BTC workprocesses. Now we have two servers shown in sm51. One is the central instance (CI) and the other is the application server (AS), which is working together with the CI.
<b>Now the big bug:</b> In the LSMW transaction, you can submit the job to batch (BTC) and can't choose the server (Instance) where the batchjob should run. So, sometimes the batchjob runs on the CI (iSeries) and sometimes the batchjob runs on the application server.
But this is the problem, because the files in the IFS are only stored at IFS on iSeries. And if the Job runs at the application-server, the files is not found, and the job end abnormal.
Now I tried to find a good solution. So I want to declare a patch in LSMW, that the batchjob is running successful at CI and AS.
    So I tried:
    \iSeriesshareusrsapdirectlsmwmaterialmatsta_text.txt
But this is not really working, because the SAP WP can't find this file with this path.
There is a second possibility: Not to submit the batchjobs by pressing F9 in the transaction LSMW but making an extra job in sm36 for each job. Not very smart !
There is a third possibility: To duplicate the import Files to each Windows Application Server. Then it is possible to submit by pressing F9,  whatever server will be used.
So my question is:  What is the right way? There must be some poeple in the world who have done a migration with iSeries an Windows Application Server together? Or not?
    best regards,
    Carsten

Windows doesn't understand forward slashes, you need to use backslashes all way:
Try the following on one of the application servers:
    Start - execute
    notepad \iSeriesshareusrsapdirectlsmwmaterialmatsta_text.txt
If you can open the file, that's the way to go.
You'd need to check in your program, whether the job is been executed on Windows or non-windows and substitute the slashes accordingly.

  • Is it possible to overlay graphics over a windows application in flash?

    Good day everyone,
I was wondering if it is at all possible to overlay graphics from flash over a windows application. I know this can be done using some other languages and tools but since actionscript is the language I know best, I thought I would ask here to see if it was possible.
What I am trying to do is make a button that will pop up and sit on top of a running windows program. I know that usually in a flash project there is a stage inside of a window and that's what you have to work with but I was thinking there could be a way to remove the window border and make the background invisible and only leave the graphic that I want to show and bring it up to the front of the screen.
Also as a side question, is there a way to record frames from your flash project and export that as an mp4 or some other video file type?
Any help with either of these question would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for any help you are willing to provide.

Thanks for the answer. For the button I was able to create an Adobe Air project, go into the xml file and change systemChrome to none (<systemChrome>none</systemChrome>) and transparent to true (<transparent>true</transparent>). This made the entire window invisible except for any objects on the stage.
Now as for the video, this isn't quite the solution I was looking for. My application will take some string from a file and translate them into actions to be displayed. You will be able to pick a file and watch the actions happen inside the flash player. But, if the user would like to keep this set of actions for later and turn it into video, I would like them to be able to do it straight from flash. I guess it would depend on how I set up the playback of the translated actions

That's because you must be trying to download a Windows application, and they do not run on a Mac unless you are running Windows on the Mac.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Get LNK2005 error when use cvi.lib in windows application VC++

    The typical error is:
    libcmtd.lib(fflush.obj):error LNK2005 _fflush already defined in cvi.lib(cvirte.dll)
The errors do not occur in a console application.

The libcmtd.lib is not my own library. It is VC++ windows library. There are some conflicts between cvi.lib and MS libcmtd.lib. The errors do not occur in console application. I used nivxi.lib in my windows application but the linker gave errors of lnk2001 unresolved external symbols which I found in the cvi.lib. So I also used cvi.lib. Then the linker gave LNK2005.
My question is what libraries should I use to control vxi instruments in my VC++ windows application? In my application, I use functions such as initVXIlibrary(), closeVXIlibrary(), WScmd(), WSwrt(), VXIinReg(), etc.

As your question is about application deployment/data access, and not about .NET Framework setup (this forum's topic), I'll suggest two possible forums for you because your issue crosses over two topics.
    For application deployment:

    Hi
I am having problem on using Crystal Report Viewer on one of my windows application.
I am not sure how to put the Crystal Report Viewer 11 Control onto the tool box.
I could found a Crystal Report Viewer control on my computer, but it is version 8.5.
I have also found another one which is Called Crytal ActiveX Report Viewer, i don't think it is the one I can use. As when I try to load a dummy report on to the Crytal ActiveX Report Viewer, It return an error. "specified type is not valid"
Please see the Code sample below.
    private sub loadReport()
         Dim r as New ReportDocument
'v is the name of the Crystal ActiveX Report Viewer Control
         r.Load("C:\Report1.rtp")
v.ReportSource(r) <---It throw error on this line.
    End Sub
Could you give me some advice about what have I done wrong, How to check if I have set up the Crystal Report Component correctly in my Visual Studio 2005 Standard edition.
    Thanks in advances.
    Many thanks
    Chi

VS 2005 Standard and Express editions do not come with Crystal Reports; only the Professional and higher editions will have CR bundled. However, I believe you can purchase CR XI R2 Developer and it will give you the components you need to create a VS .NET 2005 application using the Standard edition.

  • Can Bootcamp and Parallels share the same Windows applications and data?

I'm looking at getting an Intel iMac which will let me throw away my old PC - Yeah!
I will have a couple of Win apps that I will need to hang on to (Quicken - Quicken for Mac is horrible, but that's another tghread). Anyway, can Bootcamp and Parallels share the same Windows applications and data?
My thought would be to allow my wife to access Quicken from Parallels and not have to reboot. She will only need lightweight access and the overhead of running virtualization wouldn't impact her. I, on the other hand, would want to occasionally boot natively into Windows and run the same application with the same datafile. Is this possible?
Thanks and looking forward to joining the MacIntel world!

Thanks for all of the freplies. I suspected that BootCamp and Parallels could not shar ethe same partition, but wanted to verify. To address some of the other posts:
Re: Quicken vs MoneyDance - I looked at MoneyDance a while back and while it is comparable to Quicken for Mac, it isn't comparable to Quicken for Windows (ergo, Quicken for Mac isn't comparable to Quicken for Windows!). But, as I said, that is a topic for another thread!
Re: Using Bootcamp/Parallels for only one app: I actually have several apps that I still need access to on Windows. I work with many business applications than only run/are supported on Windows as well as receive some complex Office documents which Office for Mac cannot handle. Quicken (for Windows 2007) was just the best example of a consumer app where I could see wanting access from both OS X and Windows.
