MacBook Wireless slow and unreliable

I got a MacBook on Monday to evaluate for my employer. The unit I received does not connect to our wireless network when waking from sleep, repeatedly forgets the wep key, and will say it i connected when it hasn't used the wep key, so it doesn't get a valid IP address.
When I do get it to connect briefly, the reception is all over the map and it drops occasionally. I know it is not our wireless router(s) as we have hundreds if not thousands of other machines (Winows, Mac, and even a Linux machine or two) connecting to our network daily. I have seen this kind of problem numerous times on Windows laptops, but I've never seen a hiccup from my 12 inch PowerBook unless there was something wrong with hardware. (the PowerBook is working just fine now)
I have tried setting the MacBook to only connect to preferred networks, creating a new location, adding the key to Keychain Access, enabling interference robustness, Reordering network ports in network configurations, (bluetooth and firewire are now at the bottom, but I don't want to put AirPort at the top because I want it to use the cable connection if one is present. Any ideas? The MacBook has been fully updated with the latest software updates, but other than that it's stock.
I'm also getting many console messages like this: (network names and computer names removed for security reasons)
Resources/airport: Error: WirelessAssociate2() = 88001006 for network *****
May 24 09:00:26 ****-computer /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport: Error: (had password)
May 24 09:00:38 ****-computer mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en1 (FE80:0000:0000:0000:0216:CBFF:FEB6:7418); delaying packets by 5 seconds
May 24 09:00:42 ****-computer mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en1 (169.254.129.186); delaying packets by 5 seconds
Any suggestions would be appreciated

The settings on our routers are
A: Not under my control, and even if they were, we're not going to flash settings on hundreds of access points to allow MacBooks to connect. We have no problems with any of our PowerPC macs, although we have seem some weirdness with MacBook pros, which have been fixed by creating a location (which I have done several time)
B: Not causing persistent problems with ANY other machines. (including our intel iMac which has been connecting to the wireless network solidly since we got it) The Windows machines that exhibit this problem are generally fixed after re-adding our wep key to the preferred networks list. (which I have done on the MacBook, repeatedly) I have not installed boot camp on this machine to see if it exhibits the same behavior under Windows.
C: I can connect the MacBook to an unsecured wireless network that we run for guests which does not permit access to any of our network resources. I had it connecting to our secured network briefly yesterday afternoon, by selecting "other..." from the wireless menu in Internet Connect, entering the password and saving it in the keychain. I then put the machine to sleep. When I came in this morning and woke it up it said "None of your trusted networks can be found would you like to join network "network that I joined yesterday afternoon" I said no, because it was already in the trusted networks list, put it to sleep, woke it up again, same thing. If I connect to the network when it shows up in the list, it does not ask me for a password, says it has connected, and gets a 169.x.x.x address. Refreshing DHCP lease does nothing, and I suspect that it is not really connected at all.
D: I am suspecting this is a software/driver issue with the network card in the MacBook, or I got a bad unit. If it is software, I really hope it is fixed soon, as I simply cannot recommend this machine to students if it cannot connect to our secured wireless network. I would like to offer them something that is less than 2000 bucks right off the bat. It does not seem to correctly recognize that the network has a password, as such does not prompt for one. It gives feedback that it is connected, but it does not get an IP address. This has happened in other areas of campus, so it is not the wireless access point around my office. I'll probably call Apple Support this afternoon and see if they can give us any suggestions.
Thanks.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Macbook air slow and sluggish on itunes and safari

    Hi guys,
I have the 11 inch macbook air with 1.4 ghz 2gigs of Ram and i must say looking through itunes store - simply scrolling up and down through content is very sluggish, slow and jerky, the same applies for certain websites. Its very laggy scrolling up and down. Is this just simply because the specs are low on this macbook air? Im not impressed, i spent £999 on this when i could have spent the same amount on a macbook pro which would have been way faster. Any suggestions? Do you think apple would swap this for a Macbook pro? Ive had it for around 2 months now. Thanks Russ

I agree...I haven't seen these issues. I do see differences in web speed depending on where I'm at - I'm at my daughters place right now, and it's not as responsive as mine at home (sheer internet speed issue). As for any jerkiness, etc...I haven't seen it at all.
As for your MBA pro being faster - though the specs might show that, my experience says different. I just put up 3 MacBook Pro's 15" at work (i5 core processors). This MBA is much faster than they are for basic and other functions. (it's the Flash-based HD that allows this). Up to you.
As for the return, Apple has a 14 day return policy - usually no questions asked. After that amount of time, the won't take a return, but you can talk to Apple (since you're still covered for phone assistance for 90 days from purchase).
    Right now, I'd suggest that.

  • Why is my Macbook running slow and cant connect to internet?

My Macbook pro is running suuuuper slow and it doesnt let me connect to the internet, because of security issues?? It also changed its background photo and does not show the right date and time. what should I do?? It would be amazing if someone could help me.

    Follow these steps
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Firefox 29 Sucks: Slow and Unreliable

I am totally annoyed with the new FF version. FF 29 is way too slow and it is unreliable. I don't have a powerplant, but until the last update everything was ok, yet now it massively sucks.
The most important error is that the browser becomes unresponsible for a couple of seconds. After clicking (or CTRL+clicking) a link, for 2-3 sec, the browser does nothing, no clicks, no shortkeys (CTRL+L, CTRL+W), no paging (Page Down), no tab switching have effect. For a couple of seconds, FF looses all input. It is especially annoying during a page load when I start typing a text: half of the typed characters are forgotten. I can be tolerant for a slow application, but this unreliable behaviour is unacceptable.
Do you have any idea how to solve this?
I'd rather use IE than this FF.

You can make your Firefox fast again. Try out these steps

  • Firefox problems with slow and unreliable dialup internet connection

I have a slow an unreliable dialup internet connection. This is all that is available in my area -- no form of 'broadband' internet is available, not even satelight (I have too many trees in the way).
What happens is that due to the poor quality of the analog telephone system (very old and poorly maintained copper cables), my modem drops the internet connection from time to time -- it *usually* dials back, but sometimes I have to manually restart the connection. Because the the connection is so slow, it takes a long time to completely load pages and if the connection is lost in the middle of loading a page, Firefox seems to become 'confused' and even if I stop loading the page and then try to reload it, it does not do so. I have an external modem, so I can watch the blinking lights, so I know when data is being transfered (I also have a connection monitor feature as part of my dialup connection software which shows a bar chart of data transfers over the dialip connection).
I *seems* like what is happening is that Firefox has open network connections that become 'void' when the connection is lost and then reconnected and Firefox attempts to re-cycle these connections. Or else it has 'worker threads' that have become confused or wedged.
Are there settings that I can set (eg with 'about:config') to deal with these issues?

Maybe it helps if you toggle the File > Work Offline setting on/off.
You can also try to reload web page(s) and bypass the cache.
*Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
    *Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    *Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC)

  • Brand New Macbook Being Slow and Loud

Every time I start up my macbook pro it runs really slow and the fan is really loud. When I looked in the activity monitor it said kernel_task is using up 300 % of the CPU. What is kernel_task and is there a way to slow it down?

Is this  BRAND NEW Mac? Or one you are calling Brand New (Big difference).
If it is Brand New, like you bought it yesterday or a few days ago take it back and get a full refund and buy another that works correctly right out of the box.
But I suspect it is a few weeks/months old, which makes it NOT brand new. So if that is the case then you need to reset the SMC and PRAM.
Do a google search for how to do that.

  • Aris TG1682 wireless slow and ethernet wired connection

Have been having a problem with Wireless speeds. The Comcast tech has replaced my single band gateway with a dual band Tg1682g. Did not improve wireless speeds. Have Blast up to 150m. Speed test is about 30-50.When i attach with a wire, I can see the ethernet adapter dropping and reconnecting on the network adapter page. Have two PCs. One at Windows 10 and one at 8.1. Speed test will run wired and shows 30-40. Saw on the forum that this a new gateway so wondering if it has the correct firmware and settings ? also tried using bridge mode to eliminte wireless completely and still see adapter dropping. tech coming back next week to prove my computers are the problem.

You may want to call Comcast and have them check to see if your gateway has the appropriate firmware for your speed tier.

  • MacBook wireless slow; PowerBook not...

My wife's MacBook is having some weird wireless slowdown issues that I can't isolate. Her MB sits on a desk next to my PowerBook (G4 1Ghz 17inch). We're both connected to the AirPort Extreme (Base Station with no modem - model M8930LL - which is connected to the cable modem) and have the same signal strength. However, my PB loads webpages as fast as it ever has but her MB loads pages incredibly slowly. We're both running 10.4.10 with all the latest relevant patches.
    Anyone got any ideas?

The problem is with the 10.4.10 update - look around the forum here.
I have sitting on my desk in front of me two Macbooks.. Both have 2 gigs of RAM, and both are connected to the same linksys access point. The only difference is that the black Macbook is running 10.4.10 and the white one is running 10.4.9.
Pinging the same machine on the local network, the black Macbook is getting ping rates as slow as 1500-2000ms where the white one is getting 1-2ms.
    Something is definitely wrong here.

  • Old MacBook Pro slow and hangs frequently, hard drive problems?

    Hi,
I have an old Macbook Pro (one of the originals, from about 4 1/2 years ago). Recently I've been noticing that it runs really slow, especially when its been running for a while and there are multiple programs open. It will take a long time to switch between windows, opening a tab in Safari will usually cause a spinning beach ball for 10-15 seconds and Safari crashes frequently. Other programs have similar problems, but don't normally crash. It's running Snow Leopard and has 1GB of RAM. Obviously I expect it to be slower with lots of stuff open, but my usage patterns haven't changed and its performance certainly has. The harddrive always seems to be being accessed when I have these problems.
The hard drive S.M.A.R.T. status is "verified," and I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it came out fine. But I'm still really worried that something could be going wrong, especially with the hard drive and since I am going away in a few weeks to work on a project and will be away from my backup drive I really want to make sure any problem is taken care of beforehand.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the the problem or about anything I should try?
    Much Thanks.

With lots of concurrent processes and insufficient memory you will experience slow performance and beachballing. This is because the OS is forced to use the hard drive to replace the non-existent physical RAM. See the following:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Also, a small hard drive with too little free space and a system lacking in any regular maintenance can also lead to slow performance. See the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    ynchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
This should give you a few things to start sorting things out and getting better performance from your computer within its limitations.
If you have a Core Duo model then 2 GBs is the maximum RAM you can install. If you have a Core 2 Duo model then you can install up to 4 GBs but they system will only make use of 3 GBs. As for the hard drive it can be replaced. Notebook drives in the 250 to 500 GB - 7200 RPM range are relatively inexpensive. Visit OWC for pricing on drives and RAM. Visit Data Mem for pricing on RAM.

  • Macbook is slow and froze

My macbook pro has been running slow lately, and there were times it froze and/or has a colourful circle spinning for a very long time.  I could not do anything or click any other links at all.
I would appreciate very much if anyone could give me an answer what was wrong with my macbook please.  Do I need to scan and clean it?  And how?  I'm not very expert about computer.
Thank you very much in advance for someone could help me.

Do not use any so-called "scanners" or "cleaners". They are all scams.
Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
Run Apple Hardware Test. Apple Hardware Test is for Macs produced prior to June, 2013. Later Macs use Apple Diagnostics.
They are invoked the same way, by holding the d key while starting your Mac. If the Mac shipped with discs, insert the disc bearing the label "AHT Version" or "Apple Hardware Test" and hold the d key while it starts.
You must remove the firmware password, if one has been set, before you can use AHT.

  • Photos with airplay is slow and unreliable

Using airplay to display photos on my ATV2, I find that switching from photo to photo can sometimes be slow, or it could just freeze and not respond. Any suggestions? I've tried it with airport express network, would extreme work better?

    Hi,
Tap Settings in your Home screen then tap General / Reset / Reset Network Settings.
    Restart your iPad.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
    Try ATV2 again.
If that didn't help, try the Extreme.
