Macbook with Apple 20" Monitor

Wondering if any of you are using Apple's external 20" or 23" monitor connected to the Macbook and using it as a desktop.
Some of the questions are: I plan to connect a FW, USB Hub and iSight camera to the Macbook and use completely as a desktop. Currently Im using an iMacG5 iSight 2.1 GHz as my desktop.
I plan to either upgrade to the newest iMac 20" or 24" or buy the 20" or 23"" monitor today. Any recommendations.
Thanks

between a monitor and an imac, go with the imac. its has alot of amazing features, and you'll get a whole new computer while your at it instead of just a new screen
you could just boot your macbook up in target mode and connect it to your imac and still technically be able to use the imac as a screen for it

    Thanks!
I wouldn''t recommend any of them, I've tried them, including the one mentioned above. The performance is not acceptable and they seem somewhat unstable, I couldn't be certain they don't cause other problems for your computer. My advice would be to wait for Mountain Lion

  • Using my MacBook with an external monitor

    Hi,
I'm currently using my MacBook (Intel Core 2 Duo ,2.4 GHz, Memory: 4 GB, GMA X3100) with an external 19" Dell monitor and I was thinking to buy a 22" but then I started wondering if this computer would handle a 22" monitor.
Will this MacBook handle a 22" monitor? If yes, will I see some slow-downs? In other words will I see a difference in speed with a bigger monitor?
    Thanks a lot!

I use a wireless keyboard and mouse to access the TV and MacBook from across the room....just change the input signal to toggle from TV to MacBook...(nice)
Someone else will have to explain any differences between the HDTV's and monitors...

  • Connect MacBook with Studio Display Monitor (2000)

I am trying to connect my MacBook with an old Studio Display monitor (made in 2000) that has an ADC 30 Male cord. I have a Mini-DVI to DVI 24 Female Adapter that fits into my laptop. I can't seem to find a DVI 24 Male to ADC 30 Female adapter, which is what appears I need. Is there anything I can do to make this work? Thanks!

  • Macbook with lion; external monitor won't wake

I have a 2008 unibody aluminum 2.0 ghz MacBook with an Acer s232HL 23" external monitor. Lately I've noticed that the external monitor won't come back to me after I put the computer to sleep. I'm using Lion and a Dynex MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter. I never used to have this problem with Snow Leopard, but I got Lion right after it came out, and I could swear this problem didn't really start until a week or two ago.
I'm able to get the monitor back, but only after unplugging and replugging it in about 15 times.
    Here's what happens:
I wake the computer up from sleep. The laptop monitor comes on. The light on the monitor turns from amber to blue, and it cycles through its ports–DVI, HDMI, and VGA–looking for a signal, before saying "no signal", and going back to sleep.
I unplug the monitor from my laptop.
My laptop screen briefly turns blue as it is reinitializing.
The Acer light goes from amber to blue again, and cycles through its display. If I leave it unplugged, it says "no cable attatched," or something.
    I plug it back in.
    Laptop monitor briefly goes blue.
Acer light goes back to blue and it cycles through its ports again before saying "no signal."
I repeat this a multitude of times, until the computer and monitor seem to randomly agree to speak to eachother.
Has anyone else experienced this and found a more acceptable solution than mine?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Hi Sworden79, I'm having exactly the same problems with my Macbook Pro 2011...
I didn't notice the problem at the begining, I think it start to happend with one of the Lion updates...
Is really anoying... to make it worst, some times when I restart the computer if the monitor is plug in the computer freeze... I have to disconect the monitor from the computer, then force restart long pressing the power button, wait till Lion load and then connect the monitor back... (experiencing this issue that you are describing then...)
I notice that it reduce the amount of cicles it takes to recognize the monitor if you have display preferences open when you connect the monitor to the mac...
    This is SO annoying!

  • If I buy a new macbook with Apple, will they help me install a dual operating system?

I've heard Bootcamp does this, but I've never owned a Mac before, and am daunted by the change. I would love a Mac for ease of use, as many of my friends seem to love it, but for school purposes, my PC laptop is better. My PC needs to be updated, though, and I really want to spring for the Mac, I just don't want to lose being able to not have to do my homework in a computer lab. A friend has dual operating systems on hers, and says it works beautifully for running both, though I don't know what macbook she's got. If I go to an Apple store and get a laptop from them, even bring the Windows 7 operating system (I'm NOT doing Windows 8), will they help do this for me? Does anyone know if it is alright to have the dual systems, or if it takes away from the hardware's ability to work? ANY advice is welcome.

It  is not hard. Boot Camp allows running Windows natively, same as on a laptop PC would be with a few differences in fan and thermal control and drivers.
Once installed natively which would be dual-boot setup, you can then install and use VMware or Parallels to assign the Windows partition for use as a VM inside OS X, no more need to dual boot unless you want to.
All of the information can be printed out from Boot Camp Assistant utility, or from the support help page and link to the manual:

Paragon CampTune is a commercial product that is designed expressly for this task. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/ It consists of a downloadable ISO that needs to be burned to a disc and booted from in order to resize the partitions costs US$19.95.

  • Is it possible to display a macbook with a broken monitor on a TV?

A little while back I broke my Macbook display screen and, as I'm sure you all know, it is extremely expensive to replace. While I am saving up to have the money to fix it permenantly, is it possible to display it on a TV with the DVI adapter even though I can see almost nothing on the macbook screen itself? I don't want to spend the extra money for the materials if it cannot be completed. Any help would be great

It is ... however, you will need to use an external mouse and keyboard. Connect the display adaptors, turn the MacBook on, and, when you've given it enough time to get to the desktop (you may or may not see anything happen on the TV), close the lid, allow it to go to sleep, then click the mouse to wake it up. It should use the TV as the main display.

  • Mid 2007 Macbook and Apple Wired Keyboard.

I have a Mid 2007 white Macbook running Leopard 10.5.8. For a while, I used to use my Macbook with an external monitor and the apple wired aluminum keyboard, but stopped for some time.
I wanted to use my macbook this way again, but my wired aluminum keyboard is not working at all with my macbook. None of of the keys work, it isn't being recognized at all by my computer. Any suggestions on how I could get it to work again? Thanks.

If it doesn't work with any other computer, the keyboard is most likely dead. The wires inside can get damaged over time, causing the keyboard to quit functioning. You'll have to invest in a replacement.

  • How do I install Snow Leopard on a Macbook with a cracked screen?

I've been successfully using my 4 year old Macbook with an external monitor. Now that I'm trying to instal Snow Leopard when it gets to the first instal screen after I restart it, it will only show extended display, not mirror display. Nothing happens when I press f7 to try to get it to mirror display.

In System Preferences>Display there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the monitor and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.

  • Issues using macbook with bootcamp and external apple monitor

I am having issues using an apple external monitor connected to my macbook with bootcamp - in particular, if i connect the monitor to the computer when the computer is already on, it won't work. Also, when i disconnect the monitor fromt he computer, the computer screen will go black and I'll have to re-start
Anybody experienced the same and can help?
    Thx

just make sure that while its standing on its side there aren't any plugs or cables on that side. I'm not familiar with the mb port setup, but having power, two usb, and a display cable could prose a problem for sideward standing if they are on separate sides of the machine.
as the first commenter mentioned the orientation of your computer is irrelevant, but you wouldn't want to have the weight of the laptop sitting ontop of a usb or video plug that's coming out the side.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

  • MacBook User - Left Behind by Apple Re Monitor Options

The Apple business model seems a bit flawed in that I have a 2009 purchased MacBook with a Mini-DVI port and was looking last week to move over to a nice shiny 24" LED Monitor so that I could finally move away from my old PC and embrace the Apple world. The Apple outlet [part of Best Buy] I went to [with my operating booklet] told be that the 24" LED Cinema would be fine so I parted with my £595 [not an inconsiderable amount for a monitor]. Of course when I got home it would not connect - so I returned it as I could also not find a reasonable adapter lead. My local Apple outlet today confirmed that all current displays are not compatible and there is no adaptor.
I suppose I would not feel so miffed if I had bought the MacBook donkeys years ago.
So I am back on my PC not feeling too good about Apple but I suspect that they wont lose any sleep over it. At least I have my £595 back in my pocket & I won't be spending this in the Apple store any time never. .

SIgn in with your Apple ID, the same one you used to access this support forum.
Hopefully, you will see a list of all the devices you registered with your Apple ID, including their serial numbers. Let me know how this works out.
Edit to add: If you enabled "find my imac" on your Pro, you ought to be able to remotely lock it, or even wipe its memory. Click http://www.icloud.com/ sign in with your Apple ID and click the big green "find my iPhone" icon (nevermind the name, it will find all your devices provided they're running Lion or iOS 5).
Then file a police report and nail the b*****d.
