MacBook with GarageBand as a recording studio for a radio program?

Hey all.
My former Pastor, who is now head of a mission organization, is going to start recording a radio program. I told him I thought that the MacBook, which he has, would do the job with minimal extras.
My question is, have I told him correctly? If so, is anyone out there doing similarly? Do you know what format is required for radio? What extras do you recommend he get?(I thought a good headphone/mic combo)
Thanks for the replies in advance. You guys have always been a wealth of knowledge that most computer makers support can't compare to.
Nick
PS-My apologies as this is a double post from the MacBook categories. I should have posted here instead.

Take a look here for aninterface:
http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Interfaces.html
I would say the inspire is my #1 choice for his application, as an interface. However he could go as simple as just a mixing console, like in the bottom row (the former would give the best results, the latter would still offer really good results)
For a mic:
http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Microphones.html
I would probably pick the sm58. The BETA 87a is a phenomenal mic (I use one), though that alone is $250. The 58 would pick up less room sounds, the 87 would pick up everything
as an alt solution, the middle row are USB mics, the first two being very good quality, very reasonably priced, and would require no interface.

    not if you want to use your interface

    does the iO 26 require a driver? check the Alesis web site to make sure you have the latest, if it does.
    if not, the first suspect would be the cable, try another FW cable.
    less likely is one of the FW ports, if you have another FW device you might see if it works on the Mac, for the interface you might need to visit a music store to test it

  • My mac OS X did not come with GarageBand, how do get it for free?

    My mac OS X did not come with GarageBand, how do get it for free?
    I don't want to pay for garageband because it should have come with my laptop but it didn't. I got it used so that might be the problem. Also I installed leopard on it. I'm not sure if that would affect it at all. Please help. Thanks.

    Okay, so you bought the machines used?
    What OS version was on it when you bought it?
    You bought Snow Leopard (10.6.x) and installed it?
    The original version is important because there were some OS versions that did not include iLife (incl. Garageband) - you had to get it separately. And, the retail Snow Leopard disk does not include it.
    So, if that is correct, then it doesn't have to have it installed. In any case, you can still buy a retail version of iLife with the full suite of apps from online retailers; either version 09 or 11 will work with your OS. Or you can just buy Garageband at the app store.

  • M-Audio Recording Studio for GarageBand

    This is most likely dude to my unfamiliarity with GarageBand, but I've connected my guitar (acoustic for now) through the Avid Recording Studio. When connected, Garage Band prompts me with this:
    "GarageBand is scanning your system for audio devices, and has detected a device named “Fast Track”."
    I agree to use this device, but then it doesn't register in Garage Band. How do I designate the actual device to a track?
    Again, thank you. I'm terribly unfamiliar with GarageBand, but this will change soon.

    i have external speakers plugged into my mac mini. THey are working fine-tested in Itunes, etc.
    Also tried headphones direct into fast track....nothing....but when I speak into the mic I see the signal.
    just not able to hear anything.
    I did do all the going into preferences etc and have the track on mono2 for both guitar and mic.
    So much for plug and play. I spent 2 hours reading every thread, knowledge base on maudio site, and You Tube. Very sad....

  • Audio not working on macbook with Garageband

    1. In Garageband preferences, click the Audio/MIDI tab and make sure whatever you are using for an audio input is selected.
    2. When you want to hear or record a real audio track, click the "i" on the lower right of the window, and make sure you've selected the appropriate input source for that track.
    3. Still in the "i" pane, to hear it, make sure the Monitor is On.

  • The Comparing RAW with TS Time Lapse Recording file for MSI PANOCAM

    I am a big fan of MSI, I have been using its motherboard, MP3 and NB. MSI introduces a new IOT product in 2015, MSI PANOCAM, I feel excited about it, therefore I wanna share some experience of MSI PANOCAM here.
    Have you heard Time-Lapse, it is very popular skill for movie and advertisement. it looks very interesting because Time-Lapse shows interval recording fast forwarded.  It has been widely used in various industry, such as observation of flower growth; building construction and natural scene change.
    The Comparing Analysis of RAW and TS file for Time Lapse
    How to manage time lapse recording file is critical problem in the marketplace many end-users encountered. Generally speaking, there are two categories file have been used as Time Lapse recording, one is RAW file and another one is TS file.
    The advantage of RAW would be better video retouched, such as more flexibility of colorful balance, color temperature adjustment and less Zoom in/out distortion. Especially, RAW is quite suitable for weak light resource environment and low speed camera shutter. Therefore, the requirement capacity of RAW file is larger than TS.
    As beginner, be familiar with TS is suggested here, you can not perform as high quality as professional RAW quality until you learn proper shooting skill. Practicing shooting skill is necessary and should be prior than video retouching.
    Left part is shooting by TS and ambiguous scene can be seen; Right part is RAW which demonstrates more detail scene

    To change the amount of time you want each frame to display, you can do one of 2 things:
    -Change the frame rate of the Image Sequence in the Media settings (select the layer and typ Shift F). If the frame rate is less than the project frame rate, your clip will play more slowly.  If the frame rate is greater than the project frame rate, it will play more quickly.
    -Change the Speed in the Timing section (Inspector->Properties->Timing).  This is the method I think most people use.
    To blend the frames, change the Frame blending option, also in the Timing section of the properties.

  • Problem with Garageband 11 when recording Vocal, always "Follow tempo...

    Hi!
    Every time i try to record vocal in Garageband 11, it automatically selects "Follow tempo and pitch". Even when I turn it off, it always turns on when I start to record, and then always is checked. I always have to uncheck it later when I already have recorded, and then my audio seems somehow a little bit altered because I recorded with "Follow tempo and pitch".
    Anyone know what the problem might be?
    Cheers

    No, he's just making a point repeatedly: checking this box doesn't alter the vocals, neither the original recording (which is never changed by any effect or manipulation) nor the playback. What might have happened is that you either changed the tempo or key of the song, or you happened to play with the cursor in the Editor pane which might have pushed some audio around. Or you made another track the groove track so the vocal track tries to groove along with it. The checkbox alone doesn't do anything.

  • Can an older MacBook with OS X Snow Leopard run Adobe Creative Cloud programs?

    I bought my MacBook around 2008 and I'm upgrading the operating system to Snow Leopard. (I know, this MacBook is in the Ice Ages.) I am wondering if I'll be able to use Adobe Creative Cloud's suite of programs on this older MacBook and operating system. I mainly use Premiere Pro for video editing. Sometimes Audition and sometimes Lightroom/Photoshop.

    If your MacBook has got an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, you can upgrade. To check which processor your MacBook has got, open  > About this Mac.
    I recommend you to have at least 4 GB of RAM to upgrade to Lion. You can buy more memory at OWC or Crucial. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine before upgrading and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • Issue with creation of a specific field for a java program.

    Hey everyone,
    This is homework which is end of chapter "challenges" to practice what we've learnt.
    The chapter covers inheritance (super class and all things related)
    I'm having quite an annoying issue with the very beginning of the instructions, where it tells me to make the following fields:
    - Employee name
    - Employee number in the format XXX-L , where each X is a digit within the range 0-9 and the L is a letter within the range A-M.
    - Hire date
    This is what I wrote for code so far
    private String name;
    //private WTF
    private String date;I really have no idea what to do for the second field, how to even constrain integers and letters in the same field with a rule for number range and letter range, and that for each character independently, for what I understand.
    Any advice with this? It's blocking me from continuing -_-, because I can't make accessors and mutators and constructors, etc, if i'm still unsure of how the fields unfold.
    Thanks in advance.

    You can create a HireDate class.
    public class HireDate{
       private final int day;
       private final String month;
       private final int year;
       public HireDate(int day, String month, int year){
          this.day = day;
          this.month = month;
          this.year = year;
    }In the HireDate Constructor you could put if statements to ensure that only correct information is present. The fields are final because the hire date will not change. Override the toString() method so that when you print it out it will be in the correct format. Create some getter methods to get the private fields.
    Then in your other class just do this
    HireDate hired = new HireDate(10, July, 1991);Now you have an object that stores all 3 fields for you. You can use the object as you like and when it prints it will be in the format you want.
    Or you could just make hireDate a String variable. That is what I always did and I never lost marks for it. The reason I suggest this way is because you mentioned rules and constraints.

  • Looking for a starter keyboard recommendation for use with Garageband

    I've got a new iMac running Lion.  I'm looking for a keyboard that will work with Garageband that I can buy for as little as possible but will work and be decent.  Looking at the Apple Store, I see three that could fit in my price range, the M-Audio Keystation Mini 32, the M-Audio Key Studio 49 USB-Midi, and the Akai Professional LPK25 Laptop. I'd appreciate any feedback about these.

    Good, good, and good!
    M-Audio in particular makes great "bang for the buck" controllers.
    If you spend more, you get a better physical keyboard, which can be more satisfying to play. But for budget models, hard to beat those, particularly the m-audio.
    good site to check gear out:

  • Which piano keyboard works best with GarageBand?

    I just got a MacBook Pro and am looking to get a piano keyboard to use with GarageBand. I would like for it to be able to be played without hooking it up to my computer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Fletcher

    the best way to do this would be to write down the features you're looking for, and check out a local music store so that you can see what looks and feels good to you (keeping in mind the factors I mentioned above for compatibility)
    If that's just not an option, you might take a look at this 88 key stage piano or this 'Premium' stage piano
    Disclaimer: I have not personally used either one, and I'm not a piano player (though I have a 49e controller that I've very happy with), but this is a good brand that is also well known around here for being Mac Friendly

  • How to restore MacBook with a broken CD Drive

    Hey All,
    Is there any way i can restore my macbook with an external CD Drive?
    For some odd reason my cd drive on my macbook keeps ejecting the cd.
    I just want to wipe out everything on my laptop and recover from my time machine since my finder is not working.

    To boot from you install disc, startup your Mac while holding down the C key and inserting the disc to the optical drive.
    Your Finder is not working? Try this..
    Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash
    Restart your Mac.

  • Air or Pro for Recording vocals with GarageBand or PT and Producing

    I'm considering buying a MacBook and would like to get a new Air. I will be using it mainly for recording my vocals on beats that I have bought on iTunes. I'm also going to be taking a couple of Coursera classes on music production. Can the new Air's handle GarageBand or Pro Tools well? I've been using my iPhone 4S with GarageBand to record but I would like to do more editting of my vocals with Pro Tools. The reason I like the Air is b/c it is light and easy to transport.

    One thing with vocalists, I can think of, is to show them the input device, and have them watch the clip meter. After a few takes, if they are somewhat savvy at singing into a mic, they'll start to back off on strong notes, and moving in on subtle notes. If you watch a pro singer on stage, you'll see them pulling the mic in close for soft stuff, and backing it way off for the strong notes. In the studio, the same techniques can be used, but the person has to back away, rather than a hand held mic pulled away.
    Hardware can help this to an extent, but the singer has to take some action to get the best performance recorded. If I were going to use hardware, it'd probably be limiting more so than compression. Limiting can keep your signal under control, without doing too much to the dynamics. I'd prefer to save compression for post, so I can decide what sounds best. I used to have a female vocalist with an amazing voice. i was NEVER able to capture her properly on tape, since I had no pre processing at all. She is still in this area, and I have invited her to come record some vox for me, because I want to see if I can now get a grip on them. If I ever do, she'll be featured on an upcoming CD

  • Advice for Basic Non-Professional Home Recording Studio

    I am new to Mac (2 months) but am interested in setting up a VERY basic recording studio at home using Garageband to record primarily voice only, plus maybe a single instrument (non-digital Dulcimer) in the future. Main purpose is to record a single acappella voice to create 4 part harmony by individually recording harmony tracks one at a time. Final output will be to use the song files in Slideshows and iDVD movie projects. Also will plan on burning music CDs of the songs for family members and non-commercial use.
    So... no need for a major budget or high level professional equipment. I have used my Intel iMac's internal mic for recording test songs as I learn my way around garageband. Internal mic works pretty well but I am wanting a little more control of ambient sounds and possibly some voice boost. I have been reading the forums fairly extensively and have some equipment in mind already but would appreciate experienced input and suggestions from the forum members.
    My current equipment ideas are:
    Shure M57 Cardioid Dynamic Mic - $89 Amazon
    Shure A2WS Windscreen -$10 Amazon
    On-Stage Stands Tripod Mic Stand with Boom -$23.55 Amazon
    XLR to XLR Microphone Cable - $8 Amazon
    M-Audio DMP3 Dual Mic Pre and Direct Box $160 zZounds (if I just need a mic preamp)
    M-Audio Fast Track US44010 USB with Session Software - $89 Amazon (if I need an audio interface)
    Since I am certainly not a recording expert and have never setup anything like this before, I could use honest input regarding what my studio needs are for the planned purpose as stated above.
    If I have read forum articles correctly, using an external dynamic mic such as the Shure M57 will require that I get either a preamp or audio interface that can bring the mic signal up to a compatible level with the Line input jack on my iMac?
    Is there any advantage to getting an audio interface instead of just a preamp for the recording purposes I have planned?
    If I do decide to add the Dulcimer instrument, since it is non-digital I would just need a second mic to add its input into the iMac using either the second XLR input on the M-Audio preamp or the audio interface?
    Am I overlooking any obvious equipment, cables, hookups I will need for the simple voice recording planned?
    Any comment on the prices listed above and better sites to purchase equipment from?
    I know this is a lot of questions. Appreciate any comments, input or ideas that your experience can offer. Thanks!

    Well I just ordered the Samson C01U Recording / Podcasting Pack from Amazon for $145. Includes the mic, clip, 10ft USB mic cable, MD5 Desktop mic stand, SP01 Shockmount, Cakewalk's Sonar LE software and a nice aluminum protective carrying case. For the price I figure I can't go too far wrong and seems like a good entry level setup into basic home recording. Thanks for the info on this USB mic. I will probably download the Samson free software since I have read that can solve some issues with the gain.
    Hopefully I can report back in a week or so and give an update on how its working on my iMac.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Using MBox 2 With GarageBand on MacBook Pro Lion 10.7.3

    Hi. This is my first Apple Support post. It was recommended that I post to this forum. I've been using my good old MBox 2 with GarageBand on my old MacBook without incident. Someone stole my laptop so I had to buy a new MacBook Pro the other day. On that system, GarageBand at first didn't recognize the MBox at all. A trip to the Genius Bar led to downloading a core audio driver. This enabled GarageBand to recognize the MBox 2 as an interface, and it records without much incident when the audio input/output settings remain on the DigiDesign MBox. HOWEVER, when I change the audio setting to the build-in output, all **** breaks loose. The selected signal bar starts registering a regular, loud, red-lining metalic beeping sound, and at this point the issue remains whether or not I change the audio setting back. They've tried several audio drivers at the Apple Store and nothing is working. Avid requires you to buy support codes, which is ridiculous, so any help on this forum would be extremely appreciated. Thank you!

    I have a m-audio fast track pro that I'm having a similar problem when using it with my new Macbook Air. I found changing it to 16 bit will work.
    I have a Apogee iMic that works fine so my guess is we will have to wait for Avid/M-Audio to update drivers.
