MacBook with weird beeping boot up?

Last night, my MacBook just shut off. I figured it was the logic board, because this has happened three times before on me (while in warranty).
But now I am a year out of warranty. I waited until the next day, and I tried turning it on. It made the chime, and had a loading bar before suddenly it went to a password log in screen. It said it was booting in safe mode. No matter what password I tried (and I KNOW all of my passwords, especially my Mac one), it wouldn't log me in.
So I hit back, thinking if I hit restart it might restart just not in safe mode.
The computer turns off, and the screen goes black, but it just starts beeping and beeping and beeping with a little white light at the bottom of my MacBook case.
The battery light is still working just to give that piece of information.
I am so worried that it is going to cost me thousands of dollars that I don't have just to fix it. I need a computer to apply for jobs (I lost mine recently due to budget cuts), and my résumé and all of my important documents are on there.
I am hoping so hard that Apple might just replace it or fix it because it has a known and documented history with problems that weren't my fault?
Anyone ever had luck with this? I'm going to see a genius tomorrow and if that doesn't help, call Apple a million times (What is the best and most responsive number for these sort of issues?)
Thank you so much everyone!!

  • Macbook with weird streaming issue

    Hi all,
Weird problem so I'll try and lay it out clearly.
We're streaming using Wirecast through an ADSL2+ connection outbound.
The stream works perfectly to a number of macbook pro's and a number of desktop PC's but when I'm using a Macbook the data rate which normally fluctuates around 512kbps seems to go nowhere about 23kbps and can't stream the video.
The same laptop can run the iPhone launch presentation in HD no problems with upwards of 1200kbps. This same laptop has previously worked fine with wirecast I think possibly a setting to do with the encoding has changed though I can't for the life of me figure out what.
The settings we're using in Wirecast are as follows:
    H.264
    640x480
    High quality
    25fps
    Key frame every 50frames
    Bitrate limited to 512kbps
I also tried the same stream on an older 12" Powerbook - and it had the same slow result.
Because of this I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the built in graphics card of the macbook as opposed to the standelone mbpro ones.
Does anyone have any ideas? Like I said, it works fine on other machines, even PC's, just the macbook and the 12" powerbook can't seem to do it.
    Thanks!

Also forgot to mention I downloaded divx for mac too to see if that helped but it didn't.
    Thanks
    x

  • The Tale of the Beeping Macbook - AKA- My Macbook Pro keeps beeping when trying to boot into Snow Leopard Disc's disk utility

Quick back story:  about a month ago my macbook was falling and I caught it quickly, I had a game controller in my hand and it lightly hit it whilst I was catching it; the laptop made no contact with the floor, couch etc.  Upon reveling in my epic matrix esque catch I noticed it was beeping and the screen was completely black - Horrified I held down the power button for a forced power down and then turned it back on to see that it was fine, along with no visible scars, dents etc to the chassis.  Now flash forward to present day, and the macbook pro is only two months old (bought may 4th 2011) and I notice it's got some slightly irregular slow loading points when loading a browser, photoshop, etc.  I do the standard disk utility to verify the disc and it says
    "Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 537095 instead of 537096)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 161641 instead of 161640)
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."
So I put in the snow leopard disc to go to the disk utility within, reboot the laptop, and it goes to the gray boot screen with the dark gray apple logo and stays there whilst doing the aforementioned beep from my spider-sense catch.  Does anyone happen to know what is wrong?  Would that tiny tap from my controller when catching it have caused this problem I have now?  Is there anything I can do at home to fix this since I can't get to the disk utility on the snow leopard disk?  Will Batman ever get out of the Joker's trap?  Or am I better off just making a genius bar appointment?  Thanks in advance.
    -ZRS

Are you using the Snow Leopard disc that came with that Mac?  A gray disc that came with a different Mac won't boot yours, and a Retail (white) disc with a version of OSX earlier than the one your Mac came with won't boot it, either.
If you don't have the right disc, do you have an external HD, or can you borrow one?
(By the way, your post shows you're running Tiger; you might want to update that.)

  • 2008 mbp boots up with weird pattern on the screen

2008 mbp boots up with weird pattern on screen then says needs to restart but won't restart. Saw something about nvidia graphic card went bad and apple was replacing for free. Is that something apple is still doing and does that sound like my issue?

I know this is an old post, but people reading it may be interested by these two links:
    http://totalpoop.com/apples-2008-macbook-pro-nvidia-graphics-card-recall.htm
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
I got this problem with my previous 2008 Macbook Pro, and it appeared just after the recall ended! Here in Canada, Apple is charging close to $500 to replace the motherboard (and the graphics card). Recently, I discovered a computer chop in Montréal where they told me they can replace the GPU for $200. I left them my computer and will get it back in a week or so. I hope it will fix the problem.

  • New Macbook pro shipped with Lion, cannot boot from SL CD

I have a brand new Macbook pro 17" - shipped with Lion, cannot boot from snow-lopard disk - tech said I would be able to downgrade. I cant because if I try to boot from the CD it just beeps 3 times. Boots just fine from a Lion startup disk I created first. What the heck is going on here? Very upset that i cannot reach apple support in the evening any longer. If anyone can help it would be awsome. Tnx good prople.

    Hi Paul,
Just a quick question, are your Fn keys working properly and the 2 fingered scrolling?
I've done much the same with the help of 2 Apple Geniuses who found me an original 10.6.7 install disk for a my new macbook pro.
It installed OK but... Fn keys don't work apart from F3 and F12, the rest give an error sound. 2 fingered scrolling on the trackpad doesn't work either.
Mine was a custom build 15" with hi res glossy screen - I wonder if they've put in the newer wired keyboard mentioned here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4809
or, if my problem relates to being on 10.6.7...
Any info would be gratefully received.

  • I have a copy of Windows 7, and I am trying to bring up Boot Camp on my MacBook with Snow Leopard.

I have a copy of Windows 7, and I am trying to bring up Boot Camp on my MacBook with Snow Leopard. But my Snow Leopard install disk is too old for Windows 7, so attempted Boot Camp install of drivers fails.
I have hand-installed the NVidia graphics driver, and I have keyboard, minimal trackpad, and hardwire to internet all working. So the WIndows machine is usable. But I am hurting for wi-fi, better trackpad, and whatever else is delivered by Boot Camp. I can't use any of the Boot Camp upgrades because I do not have XP or Vista.

    Dear Nathan,
Many thanks. To the best of my memory, that is how I got where I am today. Initially I had one failed setup, then discovered compatibility mode and ran using it.  The result was not an obvious failure, but something was not there because not only were some drivers missing (wi-fi, trackpad, ...) but (much to my disappointment) the 3.1 update would not run. It complained that 3.0 wasn't there. If I hardwired to my home network, the machine would do almost everything I wanted, but the graphics were slow and clumsy. That is when I hunted around for the NVidia driver and downloaded it from NVidia. And that is where I stand now.
My son found this link http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/01/15/using-boot-camp-to-install-windows-7-on-you r-mac-the-complete-walkthrough/
which has instructions claiming to do the install straight to Win 7 without using compatibility mode.
Given that my clumsy efforts to patch things up have probably necessitated a Win 7 deinstall and reinstall to test either your plan or the one my son found, I am inclined to sit tight for a couple of days to see  how much I can learn.
I appreciate your interest in  this problem, and if you are up for reading the process at the link my son found and commenting, I would be grateful.
In any case, many thanks, Paul

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use Boot Camp. There's a Boot Camp Support Community where everybody uses Boot Camp. You should also post this question there.

Have someone look at your machine, discuss upgrading the operating system to 10.6.8 as it will run all your currently installed software (10.7 may not and require more memory, new software purchases)
Also to set up a TimeMachine backup system too.
We can only help those who can help themselves, some need someone to assist them in person.

  • BLACK SCREEN startup with 3 beeps, FREEZES when unplugged, Splash screen freeze, HEAT-UP TO BOOT

BLACK SCREEN startup with 3 beeps, FREEZES when power unplugged, IF IT BOOTS splash screen freezes, OVERHEATING REQUIRED TO BOOT - 0x7B, Event 41 kernel-powe
Issue: One day I unplug the power, the screen freezes and I get frozen music sound. I shut down, start up, I get 3 beeps (1 short 2 long), which indicates a Video failure according to the Thinkpad Laptop beep code list.
How I solve the issue day-to-day: I turn the heat up - I disconnect the battery and hard drive and plug in the power then turn it on. I will wait until the underneath is searing hot with a blanket blocking the fan's flow of air, I mean way hot because any cooler and it won't start. Plug stuff back in, Hard drive first, Battery second, turn off with power button hold, unplug power, replug power.
I turn it on, no beeps, it goes past the first Lenovo screen, then gives me a prompt because it "didn't shut down properly" and continue regular startup. What happens next is the Windows logo appears, and just as the animated windows logo starts to move (you see 2 small colored dots on the screen), it freezes. I see this every time, I know naturally that it means that the laptop is still too hot to go past that point, so I shut it down and try again. After about 5 - 10 tries it will go past the splash screen and into the login area, then it's all fine.
Sometimes when I unplug the power from the back by accident it will freeze. By accident I mean that the connector wiggles it's self out easily. This unplug freezing thing started happening about 1 week before the 3 beep black screen problem started rolling, so I'm putting 2 together.
    Errors:
I got a Blue Screen of Death the first time I started it up with the overheating ritual, but I never got it since. It was 0X7B. I ended up changing a setting in BIOS from AHCI to Compatibility Mode, and I passed everything without the BSOD again. I have always had it on AHCI.
I got another Blue Screen of Death about a week ago, but came as it was on already and I had been using it, and said something about disabling Cache or Shadowing in BIOS. I never got it since.
    BIOS:
Also, the time was set to 1988 or something in the BIOS.
    Event Viewer events found:
    1. Kernel-Power, Summary page.
There are critical events for a few things like Kernel-Power, Event ID 41, Task Category (63). There are 19 of them, each day 1 or 2 of them but mostly 1, so this maybe corresponds to my daily ritual.
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
    2. Kernel-Processor-Power - Event ID 37, task category (7)
"The speed of processor 1 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report."
    3. LMS - HCMI - Event ID 2, Task Category: none
"LMS Service cannot connect to HECI driver".
I came across a very sluggish performing control panel for Nvidia before and after this problem, and I tried installing a newer version, which I had to jump through a few hoops to do, like uninstalling first, not just updating. At first it said that the driver wasnt made for the system, or that it wasnt compatible or something, which was wrong. I made it work somehow, but it was still sluggish after install. I rolled it back to an earlier driver, and now it works fine oddly. No sluggish performance / slight freeze window thing going on. No problem at all.
MSCONFIG.exe, Boot Advanced Options: I have tried twice to change this 1 setting, check box "Number of processors" and change to 2 processors, because I do have 2 processors. I have been able to change this in the past, but it does not save the setting now, and I believe this option was selected before I started having problems, and settings did not disappear then.
What could this be. The small round BIOS battery? The video card like everyone presumes? (I.E. the entire motherboard replacement), Software? The wiggly power input area? (Not enough power getting in?), Firmware of some sort? The BIOS software being wrong?

I'd beg to differ on both accounts.
*61 series nVidia-based ThinkPads from late January through July of 2008 are a 50/50 shot, since the old chips were mixed with the new ones. Any machine built in August and later can be deemed "safe".
As for the forums (I don't do feebay) there are people who sell genuine, properly-tested planars. However, these do not come at bargain basement prices, and with a good reason if I may add.

You may be having a hardware problem that you cannot resolve on your own. Nevertheless...
...hold down the command and R keys whilst booting to try to get to your Recovery partition. If you can, use Disk Utility to try to Verify your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). If the verification fails, try to repair your hard drive. If everything appears to be OK, restart.
If you can't get into your Recovery partition, your problem is likely hardware related. If so, keep your appointment and see what the Apple techs have to say.
