MacBook won't boot after Software Update

I was installing the updatess for iTunes and QuickTime. The software sucessfully installed and asked to restart. Upon Restarting, my MacBook would not boot.
Nothing is displayed on the screen, but the CD drive checks for a disk and the backlights come on.
I tried the basics, those didn't work. Does any one know a solution?

I had tried resetting the PMU, booting to safemode (I don't know much about EFI, but I don't think it was even posting to let me have the option of how to boot), opening the command line interface (cmd, opt, o, f), and a few other small things.
I did get it fixed though. Turns out the PMU needed to be reset (I must have been doing it wrong). I think a few OX X files as right-clicking is weird (nothing highlights on the menu as I move my mouse across them) and access vault won't complete the disk saving. I plan on doing a re-install of OS X sometime soon.

Uninstall the Metakine software then do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Quit the installer and restart. Now download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo and update.

OS X won't boot after software update

Last night software update showed a security update for OS X Tiger (think it's 10.4.11), which I installed and then used the 'shutdown' option.
This morning, I can't get my MacBook to boot up, nor will it boot into safe mode. I just get the grey screen and the spinning wheel.

You can keep trying fsck, it works sometimes.
Have you tried booting from the Install CD/DVD then after you choose your language, a Menubar will show up top, find Disk Utility and run it from there.
If that doesn't work, then your best bets are DiskWarrior from Alsoft...

This last one would require another HD with plenty of space to recover to.
Unfortunately, Disk Utility & fsck can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.

G4 PowerMac mirrored drives won't boot after software update

This IS NOT about my PB but a PowerMac tower, G4, mirrored drive....running 10.5 (I think).
After some month of neglect, did software update yesterday.... 7 programs including a security update, iTurnes, QT, and I'm not sure what else.
Now it won't boot.
I have a Disk Warrior CD, but I can't get the SuperDrive door open to try to boot from it.

In worst case scenario I wonder if sticking some tape to the door to get access to the drive itself, then using a straightened paperclip in the eject hole (do they still have those?) would work.

Updating
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a bootable clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk. Permissions repair can, and is probably best, done when booted from your internal drive.

I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
Repair permissions again afterward.
It helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

Macbook won't boot after Airport update, stuck in single user mode

Wasn't sure what forum to put this in, so I'll start here. After re-imaging student machines from the server, for some reason the new Macbooks no longer recognize they have an airport card. On another machine I download the appropriate Airport software, copy to thumbdrive, and install on student laptop. After required reboot, the Macbook refuses to boot into OS X- I get the grey apple logo, spinning gear, then drops to what appears to be single user mode, with the exception that it seems to be "refreshing" itself constantly with messages appearing for brief moments (too fast to read). It cycles so fast that I can't type anything before it is gone again. If I purposely boot into single user mode, everything behaves as normal, if I mount as fire-wire drive, everything looks good. But I can't get into OS X. Before I brick more student machines, have any ideas?

Some added info, i CAN boot the bricked machine into Safe mode, but at reboot I get stuck in the same cycle again.
Oh, and in SafeBoot, the Macbook still tells me that no Airport card is installed, even though I know it does (and it's not knocked loose or anything).....

IMac Won't Boot After Software Update

First off, I'd like to say that this is not my computer, rather a friend's; therefore I don't know a lot of what happened before the install.
So, my friend said that he opened iTunes and got an update message. I asked him if he had ever updated his Mac since he got it (August 2010) and he said no. By the way he explained it, it sounds like when he pressed yes to update, it opened up "software update" and also updated some other things. He was asked if the computer can restart and he said yes.
When the computer restarted, it showed the usual Apple logo and spinning indicator. But, it also showed a loading progress bar. Now, I am not sure how far it went, he said about 50%, but it then shut itself off. When he tried turning it on again, it did the same thing.
Finally I showed up and after seeing that happening over and over, I called Apple. The employee told me to safe boot, PRAM, etc and nothing worked. Then I tried verifying and repairing the hard drive using the install disk but the computer got an error saying something like this: "cannot repair disk, try backing up and reinstalling..." The Apple employee told that the computer cannot be fixed and it either had to be "erased and reinstalled" or to try and get the data saved which would cost "hundreds or even thousands."
Is there any way to fix this? I'd really like to help him save all his pictures, documents, etc. Thank you!
PS: His computer is a 21.5" iMac (mid 2010 model). I believe it was running 10.6.

That's because the volume is too damaged to mount. Depending on how valuable the data is, you should either remove the drive and send it to a recovery service, which will be very expensive as you've been advised, or try one of the software packages that purport to be able to recover data from an unmountable partition. I have no experience with those products because I make backups. Maybe someone else here can make a specific recommendation.

MacBook won't boot after installing update 10.9.2

Hi there,
After successfully installing the 10.9.2 update on my MacBook Pro, I was able to boot to the updated system once. Then, suddently my macBook crashed and I was unable to boot again.
I managed to find a way to backup my files using the recovery mode and the Disk utility, however this wasn't straightforward to me since I was using FileVault..
Does anybody else have a similar experience with the 10.9.2 update?

The login screen appears as usual, and I am able to put username/password. Then, it fails to login and it returns the user to the login screen without mouse or keyboard working.
I booted using Command Button + S (single-user mode) and I see the error
"error loading mach kernel 0xe"
At least, I am able to boot in recovery mode to backup my disk :-)

Froze and won't boot after software update

my brother was doing a software update when the computer seemed to freeze through the install. We're trying to boot it back up, but the only thing we get to is the white screen with the clicking circle thing. What can we do to get this up macbook and running again?

Just to be clear, your computer is frozen on the white screen with the Apple logo in the middle and a spinning gear below. If this is the case, try doing a safe boot first by pressing the shift button when you turn on the computer. If that doesn't help, then follow the steps on this previous thread:

G3 won't boot after Software Update

Thanks to XPostFacto, I've been successfully running Tiger 10.4.8 on my old beige G3, with the OS installed in the first 8 Gb partition. Works great.
To get more room for virtual memory and the system, I successfully installed 10.4 from the CD onto the larger partition on the same drive. It booted OK from that partition without changing the OS installed from the CD.
However, any Software Update run - followed by the required restart - seems to kill it. I've rebooted in 9.2.2 or from the smaller partition and run XPostFacto again, but nothing seems to get the updated system on the larer partition to boot up. All I updated was Quicktime and iTunes, not the OS. (I tried going to 10.4.9 last night but started over with a clean install today.) Right now I'm looking at the blue screen and spinning daisy.
Help! I don't want to be stuck at 10.4.0

Hardware compatibility issues
Installing on a PowerBook G3, an original Power Macintosh G3, or an iMac:
If you install Mac OS X on a PowerBook G3 Series computer that does not have USB, an original Power Macintosh G3 (Beige), or a Rev. A, Rev. B, Rev. C, or Rev. D iMac, and the hard disk is larger than 8 GB with more than one partition, be sure to select a destination partition for Mac OS X that is completely within the first 8 GB of the disk.
Unless you have a PCI-slot ATA Controller or a PCI-slot SCSI card, you cannot expect to install OS X into the second partition and have it be reliable. Apple does not allow 10.4 to be installed on those older Macs, so the Installer may not check for the under 8 GB problem any more.
Mac OS X needs to be in the first under 8 GB partition. You can move your Home directories, many Applications, and OS 9 to another Drive, but not the basic system.

IMac G3 won't boot after software update

Graphite iMac G3, OS 10.4.11, 384 mb RAM - Ran software update yesterday 4/3/10 (security update & quicktime update). Walked away and came back to a blue screen with the mouse pointer and circular counter periodically appearing and disappearing (don't know if the update finished or if it crapped out in the middle of updating). Have tried safe booting - no good, zapping PRam - no good. Anyone have any idea what's going on and/or how to fix it?

Macbook pro not booting after software update

Dear all,
Since two days ago my macbook pro hangs at the gray apple screen, the round circle keeps on turning. Kept it running for nights but it does not exit this status. I read on the internet that I could run it in verbose mode, that's what I did, see screenshot below. What do you recommend? This seems to be a hard disk issue. How can I boot up in safe mode and possibly recover the hard disk data? Any other recommendations?

Get your Mac to a Computer repair service, or do it yourself. You will need to put it in an external SATA reader, like I did. I recovered files via an older mac running Slow Leopard and copied files to it.
What I did:
1. You will have to remove the screws at the bottom of your Mac, in order to get to the HDD (or SSD, whatever you have).
2. You need to remove the HDD and put it in an external Case/SATA reader
3. Copy files from your HDD to another Mac
4. On that other Mac, go to Disk Utility (search in spotlight) and Erase as 'Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)'
5. Download Mountain lion on another Mac from the AppStore, and go to that Applications folder.
6. Right click on the downloaded file and select “Show Package Contents”. Go to “Contents” and jump inside the “SharedSupport” folder and you’ll find a file titled “InstallESD.dmg”. Copy this over to the desktop.
7. Plug in a USB flash drive to your Mac having at least 4GB memory. We highly suggest going ahead with an 8GB one just to be on the safe side.
8. Now open up “Disk Utility” and drag InstallESD.dmg from the desktop to the left-hand sidebar. Select the attached USB from left side and click on “Partition” tab.
9. Select “1 Partition” from the Volume Scheme dropdown menu. Choose “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” from the left.
10. Now click on “Option” at the bottom. Select “GUID Partition Table” and press OK. Now click on Apply at the bottom right to start formatting.. (NOTE: This is will erase all data on your USB flash drive)
11. Once the drive has been formatted, click on “Restore” (it’s right next to where you clicked on “Partition in Step 5).
12. Choose USB drive you plugged-in in Step 5 as “Destination” with the InstallESD.dmg file as “Source”.
13. Click Restore and type in your password (if you have any). This will create the intended Lion bootable USB flash drive
14. Reboot your Mac with the USB drive plugged in. Hold the “Option” key on your keyboard when you hear the iconic OS X startup chime. You can now boot into your Flash drive from there.
15. Follow the on-screen instructions to install OS X , and after that, reboot
16. Format USB back to FAT in Disk Utility, copy your files from old PC to new using the USB.
That's it, you're done . Takes a lot of time, but recovered my Mac this way!

MBA won't boot after software update freeze

I have a MBA which was running offices Autoupdate, which for some reason froze, which locked up Finder, so I rebooted it and it now just goes to the apple logo on the grey screen but no further. What the heck has just happened?!

To remove the disc from your SuperDrive, connect it to the MBA and start up the MBA with the click button pressed down. If that doesn't work, start up the computer holding down the alt button. Once you see the boot screen (allows you to pick hdd to boot from), press the eject key.
For your other problem, start up the computer with the SuperDrive plugged in and with the alt key held down. Once you see the boot screen, insert the OS X install DVD that came with your computer. Select it and press enter. Once loaded, perform an Archive and Install so that you don't lose any of your data. More info on Archive and Install is available here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Leopard USB install no longer boots after software update

Hi all,
I have recently installed Leopard onto a USB partition in order to perform maintenance on my main Leopard installation. Installation proceeds without a problem however after downloading software updates the USB partition will not boot successfully, despite there being no problems with the disk / volume structures / apparently anything at all. In desperation I also tried to install Tiger, which worked, however I have the same problem after updating - it will not boot! I don't think my hardware is at fault - Techtool Pro tells me all is in order.
Has anyone had this problem and if so, how did you fix it?

I just installed Leopard onto a USB 2.0 external hard drive for a dual-boot. It booted fine at 10.5.1 but is taking ridiculously long to boot after 10.5.2 (I just got it to finally boot after the update while waiting more than 40 minutes!).
It seems that you may want to attempt booting several times - maybe turning off the machine in between or booting to the internal OS first and then to the external. Can't help you much beyond that as this is my introductory experience with this mess.
