MacBook won't boot when iPod is connected

I have the same problem as described here :
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4112865
My MacBook won't boot if my iPod 5G is connected to the USB port.
If I unplug it, it will boot normally.
Does anyone know what could cause that ?

<When iPod is plugged in at startup, the MacBook does not startup; unplugging iPod lets it startup.
yes, it seems that the kernel is not loading
<After resetting the iPod and BEFORE synching it, there is no problem. Any type of synching seems <to make this problem recur.
only syncing music make the problem occur.
the other syncing works ok
<Even if iPod is connected directly to Mac and it is the only USB device connected, the problem still <occurs.
yes
<The iPod and MacBook work fine if iPod is connected after startup.
Yes
<If the iPod is set to NOT mount to the desktop, the problem with startup does not occur.
Yes, but there are some problems in the boot/halt process.
something like "killing all" fails and unmounting /home fails (45) blabla...
and the stopping process takes very very long, about 2 minutes.
thx robert

  • MacBook/iMac won't boot if iPod is connected

Neither my iMac Core 2 Duo or MacBook Core 2 Duo will boot when my 5th generation (mk 1) iPod is connected. The Mac just sits at the grey screen that initially appears when you first switch the Mac on. No Apple logo, nothing. As soon as you remove the iPod the Mac boots. I have tried leaving the machine for 20 minutes but it still just sits at the grey screen if the Pod is connected.
    anyone else seeing this?
    Stu

If you have the dock disconnected (and everything else except an Apple keyboard and mouse, and the iPod) and it still happens, then the first thing I'd be wondering about would be a conflict with the driver software for one of the other devices.
One good first step might be to make sure that there are no "non-universal" device drivers installed - see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303209 for details.

  • Won't boot when iPod connected

    Hi,
    I have a new 2.13ghz Core 2 Duo, and with it I got a 5.5g iPod.
When my iPod is connected to my Macbook Pro and I turn it on, it (the MBP) boots only to a gray screen (without the Apple logo).
It boots perfectly otherwise, but there must be something with the boot drive when the iPod is connected. It also works fine once it is on and I plug my iPod in.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddy

  • Computer will not boot when iPod is connected

    Hi everyone,
First time Mac user here, so I'm not very experienced when it comes to troubleshooting - there may be a very simple fix for this, but I've searched online and come up with nothing so far.
I've recently bought a 20" Intel-based iMac (Core 2 Duo). I'm using Boot Camp (1.1.2 Beta) to dual boot with Windows. I already owned a 30gb iPod, which has previously been used with a Windows laptop. The iPod has disk mode enabled as I use it for transporting data as well as music and video.
Now that I'm using the iMac as my main comptuer, I keep the iPod docked & connected whenever I'm not out of the house in order to keep it charged & synchronised. However, if the iMac has to restart for any reason (like switching between Mac OS and Windows, or rebooting after a system update), it will not continue booting after making the chime sound. The screen remains white, holding the option key does not display the Boot Camp menu, and no matter how long it's left like this it will not continue to boot either OS. Pressing the Power button causes the computer to immediately switch off. Turning it on again after removing the iPod from the dock results in it booting normally.
Has anyone had any similar experiences?
    Thanks

    hi xJamez
    Welcome to Discussions
Because you said you use the iPod as an external hard drive, I am going to assume that it's not a nano, shuffle, or mini. What I suspect is that the computer is trying to boot from the iPod because the iPod actually has a hard drive in it, and the iMac thinks that it's an external hard drive that it can boot from. In the future, I would disconnect the iPod before each time you shut-down or restart your iMac.
    Hope this Helps

  • 24" iMac won't start when iPod is connected

My 24" iMac won't start up/restart if my iPod is already connected to it. If I restart with the iPod connected, I just get a gray screen (with no apple logo) forever. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, any solution? I have Windows installed with boot camp, don't know if that's the problem, but I tried reseting the p-ram, but to no avail...
    Intel iMac 24", 7600 GT, 500GB, 2GB. Titanium Powerbook 667 MHz G4, loaded.   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   30 GB iPod Video

My suggestion would be disconnect the iPod. That's just me though.

I'm guessing Boot Camp is the culprit. Whatever emulated BIOS it's using doesn't like the iPod as a startup disk.

  • ITunes won't open when iPod is connected

    Hello,
I tried syncing my 3rd Generation Ipod Nano like I always do, via a dock connector and my laptop. But when I plugged it in it at first wasn't being recognized by iTunes (10), so I closed the program to see if a reboot of the program would solve the problem, and now iTunes just won't open while my iPod is plugged in to my laptop! Once I unplug though, iTunes pops back up!!
More information: It looks like my laptop may not be recognizing the USB Port that I plugged my dock connector in to. I don't get that symbol in the Notification Area that something is plugged in to a USB Port. I've tried other ones though, same problem.
I've also had to unplug my iPod from the connector without ejecting it (as iTunes wasn't recognizing the device, so I couldn't) will this damage my iPod?

going nuts! My iTunes will not launch when i connect my ipod or ipad. the setting to allow this is greyed out as is the option 'sync only ticked itmes'. • ITunes / Windows / PC not booting when iPod is connected

(Posted this in 5th gen iPod forum few days ago with no response, thought I would try here.)
I've been using iTunes for at least 2 years now on my Windows XP system. I've never really had any issues with iTunes until I bought my 120Gb iPod Classic.
Now, if I start my computer and I've left my iPod connected, my computer will freeze in starting up until I manually eject my iPod. Only then will it start-up.
Also I've noticed that since updating to iTunes 8 it's slowed down my computer significantly. Not enough to crash it, but definetly enough to stall set-up and slow down my internet browser (firefox).
Annyway, any ideas about why my computer would get so freaked out about my iPod classic? I've owned a few minis and nanos, and left them connected and turned on/turned off my computer with absolutely zero problems.

I had a similar problem. It turns out that my dell xps has a feature in CMOS to boot from USB external drive. had to turn it off in CMOS. Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Won't Boot When External Hard Drive is Plugged In

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500Gb external hard drive. When I have it plugged into my computer through the USB port. When the computer is off and I turn in on with the external plugged into the USB port, it will not boot. It just chimes over and over. I have to unplug the external then restart to get it to boot.
Anybody know how to get my MacBook to boot with the external plugged in so I don't have to unplug it every time?
    Thanks

The problem is probably the drive. I have several of these drives and have no trouble booting with any of the computers I use.

The drive is conencted by eSata port AND uses a USB port for power.

  • ITunes Won't Open When Ipod Touch is Connected

This issue randomly started happening with iTunes 8 about a week ago. If I connect my iTouch to my computer, iTunes will load in the task manager, but not on my desktop. This also happens if I check "automatically open iTunes when iPod is connected"'
The strange thing is- if I open iTunes BEFORE connecting my ipod, and then connecting it after, everything works fine.
I've confirmed that all the additional programs are running in the task manager (iTuneshelper, exe, etc) when I connected the ipod before opening itunes. I've also tried reinstalling all Apple programs (iTunes, Quicktime, etc), and resetting the settings on my iTouch, but nothing works.
Any ideas, and thanks for your help.

FWIW i get this now and then on my winblows 'puter and just chalk it up to that. I've flushed caches and queues and rebooted and all that who-ha and quite frankly when it locks up it ticks me off to no end ('cuz it SHOULDNT do that) but i have a cold one and figure they have kindergartners doing the system programming nowadays and go from there.

  • My Macbook won't boot up because there isn't enough free space for my start up disk. It's now stuck on a blue screen. How am I meant to delete files to free up space if I can't access the computer?

My Macbook won't boot up because there sin't enough free space to run the startup disk. My Macbook now won't go past the blue screen so exactly how am I meant to be able to delete files if I can't access the computer?

Do you have a bootable backup?
What operating system are you running? If OS X 10.6 or lower, boot from your original OS X DVD or a retail OS X DVD and then delete files as needed. Your goal should be to get to 10% of your disk capacity free.
If you have OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion, you don't have many choices in recovery mode (boot holding the command and r keys down).
If you have a FireWire or Thunderbolt connection, you can try target disk mode with another mac.
If none of those work, perhaps your local Apple store can help with a bootable external drive.

  • Macbook won't boot up anymore after trying to reformat

So my White Macbook won't boot up anymore after trying to reformat. While trying to install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard, the Macbook just froze and I had to reset. Now, while trying to boot it up, it hangs at a white screen with a folder with a question mark.
My install disk is still in there, so when I try to boot up while holding C, nothing happens. It either goes to the folder with a question mark or the screen stays white. So after that I tried holding option to go to the drives nothing happens. I just see a white screen and a cursor.
I tried resetting PRAM and tried booting in safe mode and everything but to no avail. Everything results in just a white screen or just a folder with a question mark.
Can I do anything before I have to bring it to the Apple Store? The optical drive should work because before I reformatted it, I could see that the disk was in the drive because the icon was in the upper right.

it hangs at a white screen with a folder with a question mark
Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk.
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
