Macbook won't connect to my wireless internet.

I'm the technology one in the family and my brother is having trouble with his macbook. I'm on my laptop and connect fine to our wireless network at home. I have a D-Link router and it used to work fine when he connected to it. So it has worked before. Then one day he took his laptop to work and used it and connected to some other wireless network at work. Then he came home and for about the past month we haven't been able to get it to work on our home router. I've tried soooo many things and I don't know what's wrong. Can someone help? I don't know that much about macs though.

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 hexadecimal digit key for 64-bit WEP and a 26 hexadecimal digit key for 128-bit WEP. In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice versa.
Another problem is some vendors offer multiple WEP keys during setup. In these cases, the AirPorts will only work with the 1st key.

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

  • My Mac won't connect to the wireless internet

My MacBook won't connect to the internet. Yet my phone and iPad will. I have tried turing the laptop on and off. Shutting the airport on and off and turning the Bluetooth on and off. And it still won't connect.

Thanks for that.  Would this affect App store and iTunes though? Neither of them are working.
(iTunes store/match... just sit there spinning... Sophos is currently updating itself...)

  • My airport says self-assigned ip and won't connect to the wireless internet.

My airport says self-assigned ip and won't connect to the internet.  It's set on Using DHCP, and nothing has changed router/internet wise.  I tried it with the firewall off as well, but it still doesn't work.  The ethernet works, and I tried setting the ip address manually to the same one as the router.  It said it connected, but when I tried to load pages, etc. safari said I was not connected to the internet.
I also tried doing system updates and updating the airport utility - still nothing.

Repair permissions and restart your computer.  Now try the following........

Also, run the Airport Utility app which is located inside the Utilities folder.

  • Macbook pro not connecting to the wireless internet

    Hello All,
This is my very first mac (a macbook pro) and for some reason it sees my wireless router, and says connected, but when i open safari the pages doesn't load. I am a beginner with macs and I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

You probably connected but failed to get an IP address. If you have other network devices turn them off, restart the router and see if you can get access to the Internet then. Otherwise click on the network diagnostics button (or which ever appears in Safari's failure) and see if it'll give you clues.

  • IPod won't connect to my wireless internet service I am using a Motorola Modem and router gateway SBG901

You can try the following.  However, there might be something wrong/incorrectly set up with the wifi.
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router.
    - Reset network settings: )(Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

The Find my iPhone service option is given to you when you first set up the device. If you just reset it, you may have been given that option. So, in other words, the service may have been enabled even if you didn't realize it. You can then go to www.icloud.com and click on Find my iPhone, and have it play a sound. Or, you can use the Find my iPhone app on your mom's iPhone, but the service would still need to be turned on on your iPod.
Unlike Compukid said, Apple will not assist in locating a lost device without the Find my iPhone service.
I found that out 2 years ago, it's just that I thought Apple might have changed that.

  • Connecting to new wireless internet makes macbook stop functioning?

The strange thing is i recently moved and when i take the laptop back to my original home it connects to the wireless internet fine and the laptop works great. I only have an issue when i try to connect to the new wireless internet at my new place??

    Hi adamtreff!
I have a couple of articles that can help you isolate this issue a little further. First, you will want to be sure you are using the correct settings for you Wi-Fi router. These are the recommended settings on your router for best compatibility with iOS and OS X devices:

Next, you will want to troubleshoot your Wi-Fi connectivity. There are some helpful troubleshooting steps located in this article:

  • New Macbook won't connect to existing network

    Hi there,
I've just got my new macbook, and it won't connect to my wireless network. It comes up with an error message saying it cannot connect to the network. There's no hint of what the problem is. I have another laptop which connects to the network fine. Is it a password issue? And if so where do I go to change the relevant Airport settings?
    Thanks
    J

The System Preference, Network, is where you change these things. However, it will only ask for a password when you try to connect, and it needs one. If it didn't ask, the network doesn't have a password. If you tried to enter one before, you can try deleting the Keychain that holds the wireless password. Open Keychain Access from the Utilities folder. Look for your network name in the list of items and delete the one with that name. If you have more than one, that may be the issue. Just delete them and start over trying to connect. Otherwise...
We need to know more about the wireless network. Open, WEP, WPA? Type of router? What are the router settings?
What are the MacBook settings for the Airport Network settings? Is it set to join automatic or preferred networks. Try adding your network as a preferred network and try that.
The following are things that may work. Sometimes preference files prevent things like this, even on a new MacBook.
There is also a preference file, /Library/Preferences/System Configuration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist that controls some of the global Airport items. Try moving it to the desktop and then open system preferences and re-configure the network settings. Also there is preferences.plist. It has all of your network configurations and locations. If you move it, you'll have to add all of your network interfaces back into the Network Port Configurations and any Network Locations you may have made.
You can always move them back if it doesn't help, but you'll have to overwrite the new ones that were created. You must be an admin user to do this.

I'm not familiar with your router but are there any buttons on the front or back of it because sometimes you need to pair the router in order for your PC, laptop, phone or iPad to connect wirelessly with it?
From the routers I have used there are normally two buttons on the front or back (apart from the power button), pressing one of them allows you a few minutes to enter the required password on your iPad. Best look at the instructions for the router.

My ATV2 won't connect to my wireless network, although the network shows up in the list of networks and I'm using the correct password.  A laptop approximately 1 foot away connects wirelessly to the network.  ATV has worked in the past - haven't tried it recently.  Tried reset - didn't help.  Any suggestions?

If your wireless router is setup to use WPA or WPA2 security then you need to make sure you match this within your Apple TV device.
You probably already know to match case sensitivity in your password.
