Macbook won't even power on

Hello All,
I am pretty sure I know the tragic answer but I wanted to see what you thought.
I left my macbook on last night to do a time capsule update and when I woke up it was the macbook was off. I attempted to turn it on, but the only thing that happened was a very very soft clicking noise. No power on or gray screen or apple, just the clicking noise. Battery is full and AC adapter is connected. This means a dead hard drive yes?
I tired resetting the PMU and everything else Mac suggests. I am out of warranty so I thought I would see what you had to say. Thanks.

This means a dead hard drive yes?
No. You could simply have a bad battery. How old is the unit? If it has a lot of load cycles on the battery, it may have just went bad. I would try a new battery.

  • Zen V Plus locked up - is there an emergency reset - it won't even power d

Is there a way to reset the Zen V Plus. Mine is locked up during processing of a line in recording, I think because I must have connected to the computer before it was completly done processing and converting. It won't even power down. Is there an emergency reset or do I just have to wait for the battery to run out? Thanks,Phil

Jason,?Thanks, it just ran out of battery though, so I'll recharge it now. Turning it upside down and setting some weight on top of it to keep the toggle pressed so the screen would stay on helped it run out of battery faster, not very neat solution at all though, so I'll try the reset next time. Thanks,Phil

  • RMBP won't even power on after 10.8.3 update

I updated my 2012 rMBP to the latest 10.8.3 OSX release today. Immediately after the update my machine restarted and completed the install. I then turned it off when leaving the office. Got home and tried turning it on a couple hours later. Nothing would happen when hitting the power on button. Plug in the power and the LED wont even come on at all. Any ideas other then taking it in?

I had the very same problem 2 days ago with my 13 inch MacBook Pro Retina Display...I started freaking out as I had a major project due this week saved on it and I thought I had to send it in to Apple (which would have surely so to my grade's demise) .... so I took it in to see a specialist yesterday at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store. It was a short wait time as John xxxxxxxxx took a look at my situation. I explained that right after installing the update (all the parts at the same time for the 10.8.3 update on March 16, 2013) everything was fine until I had to go to sleep that so close the lid (sleep mode), when I tried waking it the next morning nothing happened; when I plugged in the charger there was no light on the charger indicating charging, no fan, no motor, no sound, clicking, no light, NOTHING. I was worried all my money went down the drain on an expensive calamity. He asked me if I had backed up my data in case he had to reset it as a last resort, I told him "yes". He claimed 3-4 other customers had seen him with the same problem and said that he may have found a solution.
John xxxxxxxx's solution = shorting the macbook battery, in other words physically opening the macbook (not recommended if a customer is covered by Apple's or Geek Squad's warrantees, PLEASE BRING IT IN TO APPLE AND SUGGEST TO THE APPLE GENIUS OR SPECIALIST 'JOHN'S SOLUTION' AND PLEASE LET THEM DO IT, IT TOOK JOHN ONLY 10-15 MINUTES TO FIX IT FOR ME) and disconnecting the battery and jump start it (restart it), if this fails however, customers may need to seek a new logic board which is on average $750-$800. John stated that the reason that this had to be done was because the MacBook's System Management Controller (SMC) was overwritten to route power to different parts of the board and peripheral ports with this 10.8.3 update.
After taking a look at my macbook's system information we found out that the update is installed, we tested sleeping and shutting down my macbook 3 times to see if the solution was permanent and it is so far (fingers still crossed even now). To be certain he resolved the issue, John went into the BIOS or system manager to run through some test such as internet adapter, internet access, charger test, battery test (to see if my battery passed or failed; IT PASSED), and other tests which were ALL passed. Also, all my DATA is safe and uncorrupted, no DATA was lost......
John suggested for me to spread the word wherever I could (forums, word-of-mouth etc.) of installing updates in pieces as for example this 10.8.3 came in 2 pieces and that I should have done them one at a time and not together... Even though he does not want credit for this fix, I'll give him credit especially where credit is due... Thank you John xxxxxxxxxx from Danbury, C.T Apple Store Genius Bar for fixing this issue you saved my macbook and hopefully many others ........
P.S: John also recommended not to partition Windows 8 on your hard drive as Microsoft uses UEFI - Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (an encryption boot now used by Microsoft for Windows 8) and MacBooks uses EFI EFI - Extensible Firmware Interface (MacBooks' encryption boot under Mountain Lion OSX); both BIOS' for the Mountain Lion OSX and Windows 8 do not agree and a similar issue of power failure can happen. Windows 8 was made for touch screen laptops and isn't really ready for being partitioned on MacBooks yet. I partitioned Windows 7 Ultimate because of most of my classes in college. Stick to Windows 7 and lower for now.

  • MacBook won't even turn on after installing new ram

I am using the 2010 MacBook (white 13 inch) I bought ram (two 2gb modules) and was going to install it. I removed my Original ram, but accidentally powered it on it the process (no ram was inside). I got a longed beep. I held the power button and shut it off. I then put the ram back in and it won't turn on. I don't hear any parts moving, no power, nothing. Yes I put the ram in right, an it's tight as can be. Its pushed in well. Help! I never put the new ram in!

The new ram doesn't fit. The laptop won't turn on with old ram. It worked before I removed it now it doesn't. It's I'm there tight so don't tell me to put it in with pressure because I did

You must be kidding to try to have your system powered by this kind of psu. I used better ones for Athlon XP 2000+ systems.
Sorry I also had to say but I'm still stunned. Try another psu then report again.

  • How can I back-up my hard drive when my MacBook won't power on?

The other day my 2 year old MacBook Pro just turned off abruptly and has not powered on since. I took it to the Apple store today and they determined that it's more than likely a problem with the logic board since its not getting power at all and now I'm going to have to get that replaced. Before I send it away I need to backup my hard drive to an external but have no idea how to do that when it won't even power on. We don't have any other working computers in the house but if I absolutely need another computer to accomplish this, I could try to ask a friend to help me out.

I lost power to my PC. Neither the battery nor the AC adapter works.  I'm shipping the laptop back to the manufacturer for repair, but they advised that I should back up my hard drive before shipping it.  Is there a way to back up my hard drive without having any power on my laptop?
    Do you have another machine?
You can remove the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure in order to copy the contents to another machine.
If you don't have another machine, you unfortunately are going to have to find someone to back it up for you.

Hold down the Power button for 5-10 seconds until the computer shuts down. Restart. Report what state the computer is in at that time.

  • MacBook won't start on battery/shuts down when power adapter is removed

    Help & advice needed please.
My MacBook won't start without external power, it gives a whir then a click then nothing. Once started up, if I remove the external power it just shuts off.
The battery shows at 98% & charging. Coconut Battery shows the following:
Current battery charge 4126 (& increasing as I type)
    Maximum battery charge 4200
    Current battery capacity 4200
    Original battery capacity 5200
    80%
    Battery loadcycles 111
Age of your Mac 6 months
    Charger connected yes
    Battery is charging yes
Does anyone have a clue why the Mac won't power itself on the battery when everything else seems like it works?
    Cheers!

As of today, my MacBook and I have been together for 40 days. Yesterday, while I was happily surfing (on battery), it powered down with no warning. Okay, these things happen. I plugged it in, restarted, and all seemed to be fine. Battery was about 70%. I did other things on my other machines and when it was about 90%, unplugged it and everything was good. This morning after using it unplugged for 1.5 hours it did the same thing, but decided to only work with the power adapter, not on battery alone. When trying to boot without AC, it would try to spin the CD and then fall back into off. When on AC, if I pulled the adapter, it would last two seconds and go blank. I made an appt. with the Apple store (Fashion Show Mall, Las Vegas) for 3:20pm. I got there right at 3:20pm and the monitors showed I was 5th in line. Store was fairly packed, at least one patron at every display item. Monitors also said the next MacGenius appt. was "approx. 8:30pm." Glad I made an appt! I was served about 15 min. later, during which time the monitors had changed to "No more MacGenius appts. available today, please try tomorrow." However, one guy came by without an appt. and was told he would be put on standby and to come back in 30 min.
Once I explained my issue with my MacBook battery, my Genius tried one of his batteries. "I just want to make sure it's your battery and not your motherboard." My machine worked fine, so he said "No problem, I'll have you out of here in 10 minutes." He got me a brand new battery, tested it, and put my old one in a box on the rear counter with four others. He pulled the serial number from the "About this Mac" area, didn't need my receipt for purchase date or anything. I had even printed this page: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/ to use as ammunition, but didn't need it. He did approve highly of my dashboard widget "iStat pro", available here: http://islayer.com/.
So the battery issue is a very common problem, and one that Apple has tried to deal with as painlessly as possible for the consumer. My Genius did ask if the battery showed an "X" in the icon bar, and I said no. Just wouldn't run on battery. On the way out of the store, one of the 3 MacBooks, in fact the one closest to the door, had an "X" on the battery icon. When I unplugged the power, it shut down immediately! The moral of the story is to contact Apple immediately with problems and give them a chance to fix them. Hope this helps others.

I updated my Macbook Pro last week to Lion.  I went to go import pictures from a memory card to my iPhoto, but only a portion of them loaded before my iPhoto froze and I had to Force Quit it. Now iPhoto won't even open... Help!
Please! I need an answer fast!!!!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD

IOS7 installed OK to my iPhone 4S and worked OK for a while but I have somehow managed to completely jam my iPhone 4s. The touch screen won't work except for up and down gestures (some of the time). I can't make or answer calls, I can't even power if off. I can't access the hardward ID which Apple support seems to require for Chat.
It might have happened when I was accessing my camera bypassing the lock screen!
All I know is that the thing is now useless and it looks like I will have to wait for the battery to run down to see if powering it back up afterwards will solve the problem.

I have since discovered the "hold down home key and power button" together for a few seconds and this seems to have worked .... phew!

  • TS1367 My White 13" MacBook (the last model ever produced) will no longer turn on, and the charger light won't even luminesce when plugged in.

My MacBook has been suffering for the last 2 and a half years or so, and finally called it quits today.
There were many things wrong with it, but the most debilitating issue was with the battery; if the computer wasn't plugged into a wall, it would immediately die. Upon being powered back on, the clock would always be reset to 12/31/2000 at 7:00 PM. As I stated in the title, it will no longer even power on or recognize a charger. Help would be much appreciated. If it's a battery issue then I can replace it, but I don't want to buy a new battery if my computer is totaled.

First see the MagSafe troubleshooting tips:Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters and check to see that all looks ok.  You might want to try using another charger in case the charger is faulty.  If that doesn't help, take the MacBook Pro and charger to an Apple store genius bar and have the technicians test the system to see where the fault is.

My old ipod nano is recognised by my new MacBook Air, and even transferred purchases from it, but it won't synch?
When I linked it it used the name I had given the ipod so it seems strange that it won't synch even though it is definitely connected.
