MacBook-won't install/update software unless in safe mode

Hi there, I am worried I have a virus. My computer won't update/install software unless in safe mode. It is also incredibly slow to use the internet and sometimes microsoft word will just close on me unexpectedly. It also gets very hot. I am unsure what to do about it. It is a white macbook with curved edges, I had had it about 5 years. Recently it has been having a lot of problems and I am unsure why.

This is not something you should blame on a virus... it's extremely unlikely that you have any kind of malware, and even more unlikely that that malware is a contributing cause of these problems.
I'd advise you to try the suggestions in my Mac Performance Guide. If nothing there helps, let us know what you found as a result of those suggestions.

  • Macbook won't install the software update from version 10.6.8

Hi folks. I've tried this software update multiple times and now I find out that I can't extend my AppleCare warranty after it expires. So I'm hoping that someone else has had this problem. Basically the software update proceeds as usual, the computer restarts and just as you think everything is fine, the message 'There was a problem installing this software update. Quit all open applications and try updating again. If the problem contines, contact Apple support.' ANY help greatly appreciated. Many thanks

    Hi..
See if you can download and install the combo > Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
And make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • My Macbook Won't Install updates

I just purchased a Macbook Pro and it won't automatically update the software. It looks like it downloads the software but then just quits and never ends up installing.

It never automatically updates the software, updates do need to be preformed manually. Try logging out of the app store, restarting the computer, and logging back in. Then run your updates again

  • My MacBook won't install the software

My Macbook Pro won't install the software

It has been months since you asked for help.  This worked for me:
I installed Apple Software Installer Update by itself and it installed.  Then I tried to install each update one by one.  I noticed my Safari update and Security Update 2013-14 were not installing like the others so I waited to install them after I did all the others.  Also, after I noticed that those two updates were giving me problems, I excluded them and was able to update all the other updates at once.
Safari and Security Update were the only two left. I was able to update them.

  • MacBook won't boot... No safe mode.

I've had my new MacBook for a few months now, and it hadn't caused me any trouble. I received a MacBook from my college (even though I already had one), and it was mandatory that I use the MacBook the university supplied me. The MacBook has BootCamp on it, but I've only used Vista a few times.
I installed a few programs last night--CandyBar to customize icons, and Paragon to be able to customize the icon for the Windows disk on the desktop (you have to have read and write access to NTFS partitions in order to do so). After customizing some icons using CandyBar, I restarted my computer, but it wouldn't boot. I might add that I changed access privileges to a few of the files (the Users file, and a subfile in that folder) from "no access" to "everyone" in order to customize those icons.
The gray screen with the Apple logo and the pinwheel appears for a few seconds, and then it stalls at the Blue Screen of Death, alternating between the blue screen and a slightly lighter blue screen with the pinwheel. The pointer flashes periodically.
I've tried starting in Safe Mode (holding Shift after the start-up chime), but it stalls at the blue screen. I've used suggestions from Apple Support (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411?viewlocale=en_US#symp3), but to no avail. I'm clueless as to what could be causing the problem, as I'm relatively new with Macs (two years or so of experience).
Any suggestions? I'll try to provide as much info as possible, but you may need to walk me through it.
    -----Edit-----
I just tried to boot Windows by holding down option at startup and selecting the Windows disk, and got this message:
    Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Volume label is Windows.
One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
After it reaches 100%, it reboots, but just goes to the blue screen again.
I also booted from the installation CD and ran Disk Utility. After trying to verify and repair the Macintosh disk, I receive the message, "The volume Macintosh appears to be OK." Verifying and repairing the Windows disk is not enabled.

I feel like an idiot, but I'm too happy to be down on myself. While in DiskUtility from the Installation DVD, I repaired the disk permissions (which I had overlooked earlier). That did it. Everything is working fine now.

  • MailOnline videos won't play in Firefox unless in safe mode although they're fine in Explorer.

It's for my mum, honest. Firefox 25, java and flash uptodate but the Mail Online videos won't play unless I start Firefox in safemode. A large white rectangle appears but nothing else.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
    *Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    *Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
    *Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)

  • My macbook won't start-up, so i tried "safe mode" booting but the computer has been on for 8hrs

I'm Ubam, I have been using Macbook pro 500gb 5400-rpm hard drive, 4gb of 1333mhz DDR3 SDRAM, 2.4GHz dual core Intel core i5 processor; for 2yrs now.
The problem i'v encountered now is, I pressed the power button to shut down & it did, so now it won't start up, so I tried putting it on but everytime I press the power button it shows the screen light before login it then goes off, so I tried a "safe mode" by pressing the shift key, after that the Apple logo comes on & it has like that for 8hrs & I'm still waiting. Thanks

  • Firefox keeps "hanging" and sometimes crashes on my macbook. I've updated and went into safe mode, same problem. What next?

I updated to the most recent form of Firefox and that didn't work. Then I restarted in safe mode, that didn't work. What else should I try?

Hello graceajaen, you can provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.
#Enter ''about:crashes'' in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
#Copy the '''5''' most recent Report IDs that start with '''bp-''' and then go back to your forum question and paste that into the "Post a Reply" box. (Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the ID's. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like)

You don't want to install the software that came with the drive, you don't need it and it will be problematic. Connect the new drive, open Disk Utility, select the new drive and partition it using the GUID partition scheme, then format it as Mac OS extended journaled and it will be easy to use with your Mac.

Indesign 5.0 was working fine, i just need a couple extensions

    you can update cs5:  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/

you can upgrade to cs6 or cc (for money).

  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) will only boot in safe mode.

I've been unable to boot my MacBook Pro normally. It will boot in safe mode, and, until today, I was able to get a normal startup after resetting both PRAM and SMC. Running "Repair Disk" on the startup disk did not reveal any problems. I have also done a recovery boot to reinstall OS (10.9.1), which did not help either, though I did not wipe the hard disc first (I did back it up).
Had to take it to Apple back in January when the screen started acting funny, i.e. getting static-y and going blank for seconds at a time but then coming back. Their tests showed that there were no hardware problems, and the screen issue was eventually resolved by doing a PRAM reset. About 14 months ago, I had the logic board replaced.
Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but when I have been able to boot normally, if I quit Google Chrome, the machine will freeze completely.

First try doing a Software Update.
Then restart and see if that works.
If not then I would update Java.
Restart and see if that works.
If not then delete the following plist items.
    [invalid] com.oracle.java.Helper-Tool.plist
    [invalid] com.oracle.java.Java-Updater.plist
    Should find these in:
    /Macintosh HD/Library/LaunchAgents
    /Macintosh HD/Library/LaunchDaemons
Now restart & see if that works.
If that doesn't work try deleting everything in:
    /Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac Pro won't boot up, not even in safe mode.

Problem: Mac Pro having severe lag issues. Added more ram, removed Kona3, etc., nothing. Tried repairing with disc warrior but unable to repair startup disc unless booted from disc warrior disc. Won't boot up from disc warrior disc so set startup disc to the disc warrior disc. Now comp won't boot up, not even from safe mode. Any suggestions?

Boot from your OS X install DVD.
You always need to have a 2nd backup you can boot from, or an emergency (only) boot drive.
Disk Warrior does not have 10.5.2+.
If you can't do anything, zap pram, see if that helps. Or pull your drives and boot from your DVD. Setup OS X on a FW drive.
And of course, always always have at least two backup sets of your system; and sets of your data - so one set at least is always off line.
