Macbook won't power down

Bought a brand new Aluminum Macbook 4 days ago, and it worked perfectly for the fisrt 3 days, but today it has decided to not power down or let me log off. When I try to shut it down, it acts normally at first, closing out all my open apps but then it just does nothing and won't turn off.

Have you tried holding down the power (on/off) button to force shut down?

  • Zen Vision:M 30GB won't power down; any ide

I've had a 30GB Zen Vision M for a couple of months now! Awesome player, went through the usual round of recognition problems, but it's been working fine of late. My problem is, it won't power down now. When I try to power down, the unit says it's powering down, the dispaly goes black except for the battery icon. And it stops there. The blue backlight on the menu buttons stays on, the battery icon stays on, and eventually it turns off after 5 minutes because of being idle. Not a terrible problem I know, but a real niusance. I am running the most current firmware (have been for a while). I've tried resetting and clean-up. No change. I'm afraid of trying to reinstall the firmware, in case I have the same problem that many others are having, and go from a good player with a power issue, to a player that does nothing. I can't see it being the power switch itself, since it powers up fine, and tries to power down. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. birder

    Welcome to Creative forums!
You can get a lot of results if you search "Zen Vision M not charging" on the search box.

Exactly what did you do to run Disk Utility and exactly what happened up to the freeze?
I called some place to ask for advice and they said it could be my logic board???
That's an easy answer to give but not necessarily the correct one.
If you have the system restore disc that came with your Mac, boot with that disc in the Mac while holding down the "D" key. That will invoke hardware diagnostics. Run those several times to investigate the possibility that your Mac has a hardware flaw.

  • My iPod won't power down?

    Hello
I have an iPod Nano that I keep on a radio/alarm clock thing. Sometimes when I take it off it won't power down. Does anyone know how I can get it to power down?

SOmetimes you just have to wait a few seconds after pausing it and/or removing it from the dock before shutting it down. This is normal. If it still won't shut down after ten seconds or so, you might try holding the MENU and SELECT (center) buttons until you see the Apple logo to reset it - then see if it'll shut down.
    Cheers!

  • Ipod won't power down

I can't get my ipod to power down. It's constantly staying on, draining the battery. It won't power down automatically or manually by holding down play/pause.

I found another question and answer about the same issue, and was able to correct the problem.

  • Help, MacBook won't shut down properly!!

Hi, just hoping someone can help with the following as my MacBook is not a happy bunny. I recently reformatted my hdd and restored my system using Time machine. This was to allow me to create a new partition so I could run bootcamp. All was fine for a few weeks, buy I have noticed recently that system preferences has become unreliable and fails to load on most occasions, freezing in the process - it shows in the dock, but does not load. I have OSX snow leopard all updates, two user accounts, guest activated. I have repaired disk permissions a number of times - sometimes works for a very limited time, other times not. I have deleted the finder and systempreferences .plist files in both user accounts, emptied trash and restarted, again limited effectiveness. When the sys prefs crashes, i force quit it, then it tends to load fine next time, but 2 mins later its up to its old tricks. On top of this, the Mac is now refusing to shut down - it will get to the spinning wheel phase then nothing, I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.
I've also tried disabling the guest account, but no luck.
Any ideas gratefully received as I'm worried that jts all going crash soon !
    Many thanks
    Rich.

    Many thanks MJ,
I deleted everything you mentioned and sysprefs worked for a while but as soon as I tried opening an application e.g. mail, the first reboot of sysprefs worked fine, but subsequent ones hang. Funny thing is now the power down problem has gone away - it seems to work very quickly - I guess a function of clearing out the caches folder?
Anyway, sysprefs issue remains. Ive reported the fault to apple anonymously (have copy of report if that helps). Here are the console messages during a number of restarts and subsequent attempts to open sys prefs. If you/others need more please let me know (the last line represents me forcing a quit of sysprefs):

  • Muvo T200 Won't Power down or pause

I bought a muvo t200 for my husband for his birthday (as a match to my own). Aftger upgrading the firmware to .03.03 it will turn on, but won't pause or power down. About one in three times, pressing the power down button causes it to either skip to the designated shortcut or go to the options. the rest of the menu seems to be working ok.
    Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance for helping out!
    - Clarinda

Can you try resetting it to see if that helps?
Insert and remove a straightened paperclip from the Reset Hole.
If this does not work, you probably need to format the player.

  • 5th Gen 60G Won't Power Down-NO SLEEP

My 5th gen 60g's are not powering down, the backlight will go off, but they will NOT power down! I've reset, re-installed and used factory defaults, but they still drain down the battery because they WON"T SHUT OFF

I'm looking into the same problem. A friend has a 5G 30GB video that's having insomnia. I've restored it a couple of times using itunes 8.0.1, and the firmware is version 1.3.
It's got a few problems. One is that it won't go to sleep by itself at all. If I enable the sleep menu option and select it, it "sorta tries to" go to sleep - i.e. the clickwheel stops responding but the screen stays on (if the backlight is set to "always on" then that also stays on). The clickwheel stops responding to swizzling until I press a button.
Also, when I do a reset (hold down center/menu buttons) it forgets all the menu and clickwheel settings when it reboots and even asks me to choose the language again. I believe this only started happening in the last couple of weeks. I don't know if a firmware upgrade triggered it.
It's chewing up the battery very quickly the way it is. I've loaned the owner my old 20GB photo for the time being and this one will sit on a charger until a solution appears
I hope someone at apple spots this and writes a patch!
    Thanks
    Matt.

4S top button won't power off only go to sleep mode. How can I power the phone down?

Thanks - Sometimes this works and then it doesn't always do the trick. I wonder if there is a combination of buttons that could be pushed to shut the phone down?

  • Macbook won't power up

I have a Macbook Air 11inches, Late 2010 model. I haven't use it for a couple of months. When I decided to use it, it won't power up. I used different adapter still no luck. I notice that the adapter has a low green light, not the kind of light that I have seen before. I brought my MBA to some techie who knows apple they said I have a busted battery. I am still confuse, though its already 1 year and half old since bought it but I didn't remember if I drained the battery or something. All I know the last time I used it, I properly shutdown my MBA before I leave in its proper place. Please help, I really need my MBA now..

With the charger plugged, does the Mac turn on? If not, it's possible that the logic board has failed. If that's the case, it will be an expensive repair.
The green battery indicates that the battery is full, but if your Mac doesn't turn on with the charger plugged, it's not a battery issue

  • My old macbook won't power up - help please!

I have an ancient macbook, from around 2006, and it's been chugging along just fine.  Suddenly, it just won't power up at all!  Power adaptor shows a green light at plug in, so the cord is working, but no fan sounds, no lights, nothing when I try starting.  I've tried that SMC reset, but still nothing.
Is there anything else I can try?  If not, does anyone know if a good apple repair shop should be able to recover my data?  I've been an idiot and haven't done a back up in a few years.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide!  I'm going to purchase a new macbook air, but REALLY need my data from the old one if at all possible, so hoping I can get it started and/or have a repair person salvage the data.

  • MacBook won't power up, Thanksgiving Blues

I have, what I guess, is a 13in MacBook thats about 3 or so years old running Snow Leopard. I left the machine in sleep mode while I was away for a few days, and now it won't power back up.
I've charged the battery all the way, get full indicator lights and everything, and the mag-plug-thing shows a green light. everything appears normal, except the **** thing won't power on. I've tried resetting the SMC and out of ideas...
Am I correcting in assuming the power adapter and battery are both fine, since they light up and charge? So confused.

If both items light up then it is likely fine. Do you get any power at all? Does the machine chime? Do you get the LED light on the front lighting up? Take it to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider and they can troubleshoot further.

  • My MacBook won't shut down...

Every time I try to shut it down it tells me that something i had been using has failed to close and i have to force quit, which i do, then it tells me finder fails to quit, so i relaunch it.
Then when i try to shut down the menu bar at the top and the hard drive on my desktop disappear and it still doesn't shut down.
Running the power down also doesn't work...

now, of course, you could just make sure to close all open applications completely before attempting to shutting down. is it the same application(s) that hangs at shutdown - the same app(s) that you need to force quit each time? here are some recommended steps that may help resolve such an issue:
press and hold the power button until the computer turns off completely. wait 30 seconds. look at these instructions and follow them to boot into Single User Mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
now, while in single user mode - type the command that appears near the cursor prompt as it appears exactly - this will run a hard drive file system repair. after it's done, note any error messages that it reported. then type "reboot". now, once you're logged in again, open Disk Utility in your Applications> Utilities folder and click the button for Permissions Repair. open some applications, close them, and try to shut down. still have issues, or all set?
