Macbook Won't Start After Accidentally Interrupted Software Update

Hey all
I'm in need of HELP!! For the first time yesterday since my macbook purchase earlier this year, I tried installing the software updates.
After the computer downloaded the updates, it prompted me to restart the computer and so I did. As follows, the computer restarted and began to install the updates after restarting itself (the screen's background was blue displaying only the (bar) progress of the installation, which I accidentally interrupted and shut down).
Today, I've been trying to turn it on and even consulted the troubleshooting resolutions including restarting the computer with the control-command-power key combination, 'resetting the PRAM', and 'resetting the Power Manager'. I did this a couple of times just to be sure, let the screen load for awhile and still the screen won't go pass the gray apple logo with the loading circle.
What should I do now guys??

It is a very good idea to do a complete backup (clone) of your hard drive to an external drive before installing new software. That way, if it goes amiss for any reason, and they sometimes do, you can get right back to the exact state you were before the install or upgrade.
An external hard drive for making a routine (daily) backup of your computer's drive will be the best spent $100 or so you will ever spend on your computer. Even if your hardware gets corrupted or your drive burns out or your computer gets stolen; in all cases you do not lose your computer's data if you keep a current, duplicate external drive.

  • Why Macbook won't start after unsuccessful software update (BSoD) ?

My Macbook is not starting after an unsuccessful attempt to do a software update.
There were 5 updates available but none would work, so I downloaded a couple of updates individually from Apple's website.
But these individual updates did not work as well and an error message said that the digital certificate may have been tampered with.
After retrying an iTunes update, the message that I needed to restart my computer appeared.
Since then on every start up attempt, I get the Apple icon and then the same message to restart my computer appears.
I know what the system looks like with a HDD failure and this is not it.
Clearly a software issue has caused a hardware failure somehow.
I am wanting to know if anyone else has experienced this or if there is a recent bug or glitch within the software update process that is causing the problem.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

After obtaining and installing another HD (250 GB), it appears that something is quickly returning me to the same place.
The time lost within installing the HD and reinstalling the various software programs is becoming a little too high for me.
I bought and installed Leopard to avoid going through anything Tiger may have had that brought my Macbook to its knees.
But now here I am again less than 1 month after installing the new HD and installing Leopard with a Macbook that simply will not work.
To top it all off, I bought an external HD to use Time Machine today and never have had the opportunity to backup everything.
Any ideas are definitely appreciated in advance.
My biggest concern right now is that it appears that the Random Shutdown Syndrome (RSS) either has returned or something is allowing the temperature to escalate and overheating a board or something internally.

  • Macbook won't start after recent update

    Hi Guys,
Got a problem with a month old Macbook. Clicked for the recent updates and after it restarting the Macbook won't start up past the Apple logo and the rotating symbol beneath it.
Any ideas ? Thanks in advance

  • My MacBook won't start after iTunes update. I keep getting the spinning wheel. Any suggestions?

While trying to back up my iPhone 4S to iTunes, I received a message that iTunes had to be upgraded. I did the upgrade, but my computer won't start now. I get a white screen with the spinning wheel. (Like the computer is trying to boot).  Any fixes?

  • Older Macbook won't start after attempting to install snow leopard

A friend of mine with a pre intel notebook inadvertently tried to install Snow Leopard and now it won't start up.  Any suggestions?

    Hi DOGG,
I'm not sure if he erased...  When you power it up you get the gray screen with the apple logo for a few minutes then it shuts down.  I put Leopard in and pressed the C key while starting up and I got the Installer but my only choice was to erase everything and install or erase and journal or something like that.  It shows that there is 23GB disk space remaining and 185 total so I was hesitant to proceed because it looks like maybe everything is still there.  Then found my old Tiger install disk and tried to start from there and it just kept powering itself off after a minute or two.  I read something about the Tiger install disks were specific to different models so maybe mine isn't compatible?  Anyway, I've asked him to find his install disk so I can try that.  But if it sounds like his hard drive is erased should I just go ahead with Leopard?

  • MacBook won't start after latest OS update ("Possible memory corruption")

I am running a late 2009 MacBook, 250GB, 4GB ram. I have just updated the OS (standard, regular update), iTunes and an older iMovie update. I made the necessary restart, and begun using iTunes. After 5 minutes, it crashed, and when turned back on, the startup apple logo screen was filled with command prompt code. The only thing I can do, is to force it to shutdown. At the top of the command prompt text, it now says "possible memory corruption".
Latest update: I am now met with a black screen every time I turn on - the "sleep" light is on, but that appears to be all that's happening.
    Help!

Do you have any 3rd party memory modules installed?  What system did you upgrade from? What MacBook module do you have, i.e.
Check the memory modulds to make sure they are securly seated and try again. If you have 3rd party modules installed remove them and leave just the original Apple modules and try a restart.

  • IBook G4 won't boot after 10.5 software update?

    Hi,
I have a iBook G4 14" 1.42GHZ 768mb of ram which was running fine under 10.4.11. I updated to OS X 10.5.4 via a retail discs and it installed and re-started perfectly. All seemed ok so i ran software update and the installation seemed to go fine. However upon restarting it all i'm getting is the grey Apple screen & logo along with the spinning flower icon below it? If i boot of the installation disc it won't see the hard drive, just the Mac OS X discs? If i reboot holding the "alt" key it shows the discs as macintosh HD but it still hangs at the Apple logo. Disc Utility will also not see the hard drive. The iBook was working fine before this, is it just coincidence that the hard drive has died?
    Any thoughts or advice welcome?
    Thanks.

Is it possible that the hard drive was nearly full and installation of Leopard has filled it to the point of disastrous failure? It's generally recommended to keep at least 15% of total hard drive space free for smooth operation.
If this is a possibility, do you have access to another Mac with FireWire or a bootable external FireWire hard drive so you can pull some things off the drive to another location in order to free up some hard drive space?

  • IChat won't start after 10.4.3 update!!!!!

After I installed 10.4.3 iChat won't start. It would look like it was going to Launch and would quit. I looked at all the postings and found a couple of ideas, but nothing that worked. The only way I can get on is by disabling my network connection and then starting iChat and then re enabling my network connection. Any other ideas. Please let me know.
    G4 Laptop   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Ralph, no offense, I know you're trying to help this guy, but all you've done to offer him advice is to tell him what he already said he's doing and was trying to not have to perform every single time he wants to use iChat.
In his ORIGINAL post, he said exactly this:
The only way I can get on is by disabling my network connection and then starting iChat and then re enabling my network connection.
Please try and really read what someone asking for help is saying, then offer advice if you've got it. All it looks like here is that you weren't really paying attention to his problem in the first place.
As for me, I'm having much the same problem as a lot of people getting iChat to work, and I clicked on this seeing it had a reply thinking I was going to finally find an answer. It's a little frustrating to see people reply with exactly the same information they've already been given just being repeated back to them.

  • 2006 Macbook won't reboot after losing power during update:

My older Macbook lost power during software update (battery is dead and only works while plugged in to outlet) and now will not reboot. I get the apple screen with the spinning wheel of doom. Please help! My 5 year old son is very upset that he messed up mommy's computer.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • TS3274 iPad does not start after the latest software update

After downloading the latest software update on 25 April 2014, my iPad does not start. The reset mechanism does not have any effect. I would be thankful for advice.

If the reset doesn't work, force iPad into recovery mode.
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.

  • Won't start after 10.4.11 update

I just updated my OS to 10.4.11 and now my computer won't start up. I get to the Mac OS X screen that says OS X is starting up. Then I logon and then the blue screen and that is as far as I can get.

Likewise here - just updated the wife's imac 17" duo Intel and nothing.
    OSX 10.4
Tried booting up into Safe Mode as per instructions. Cannot even get there.
Held SHIFT (even tried the left and then the right one) but still have the Grey Apple and spinning gear.
Now I'm a Windows user, so I know F8 or bootup with CD gets me into command console, isn't there an Apple equivalent to it?
Obviously Shift doesn't. I read somewhere else holding the Apple key or X does it, but nothing here.

  • MBP won't reboot after an aborted Software Update

My daughter away at college attempted a software update (10.5.8 Combo). She was also in the middle of loading a software program (matlab). The computer started to make a continuous "crunching" sound and got very hot, so she shut-down the computer before the update was complete. She can no longer boot-up the computer in OSX Leopard. She could not eject the matlab disk in OS X, however, was able to eject the disk through windows. The Vista windows partition (bootcamp) boots-up fine. Does someone have a suggestion to restore OSX? Erase the hard drive? Thanks

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
    Both at once????
She can no longer boot-up the computer in OSX Leopard.
What happens when she tried? Has she tried booting with a shift key held down (into "safe mode")?
Does someone have a suggestion to restore OSX?
Install OS X 10.5 over the top of what's there ("upgrade", the default). That requires a "retail" OS X 10.5 installation disc. Then try to apply that "combo" updater again.

My macbook was having problems with the screen. Horrizontal lines appeared first but would disapear after adjusting the screen... after a few weeks half of the screen would turn to what seemed to mirror upside down the top. so i did my research here and got to my conclusion of a loose connector. So i looked up diy about opening it (owc/ifixit) and i unplugged the connector and reattached it, but after the whole ordeal the macbook wouldn't turn on. i dont know what went wrong i have look/read around the web found that might be esd. is the macbook dead or can it be saved. can i take it to a shop to fix it or is it time for a new one?
