MacBook won't startup

hi all,
embarrassing problem, where my macbookw ont get very far in the startup process. When I use verbose logging on startup, I get
*CSRHIDTransition Driver*
then it goes to:
*synching disks*
then SHUTDOWN!
I have tried using Single User startup to run fsck-fy, and this is the output
** /dev/rdisk0s2
** Root file system
** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
** Checking Extents Overflow file.
** Checking Catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file spss.jnl
(It should be 1 instead of 0)
Invalid sibling link
(4,25161)
** Volume Check failed
/dev/rdisk0s2 (hfs)EXITED WITH SIGNAL 0
Now all I can think of is recently I updated SPSS v 16 with some supposed authorised patch, and this may have done it - as I only ran it once before this happened.
How can I find or rectify this problem ? I am overseas at the moment, and don't have my bootcd, so any suggestions would be helpful.
I have tried the following
zapping pram
running fsck-fy as single user
starting safe mode (shift)
starting using X
any ideas on how to remove or fix that spss.jnl file ? I am happy to unistall SPSS 16 if it means I can use my mac again!!!
mat.

I believe DiskWarrior would repair the drive. You can purchase a copy and download it from Alsoft's Web site.

  • MacBook won't startup from HD or Install DVD

Girlfriend bought a new (used) unibody MacBook tonight off Craigslist and it won't turn on - Buyer beware... Anyway, here's what happens and what I've tried, either on my own or on the phone with AppleCare.
The seller reinstalled Leopard to it's default settings. First time we turned it on it went straight to a black screen with text that said "No bootable disk available. Please insert install disk." or something like that. (Later, on other restarts, we saw the similar folder with question mark.) Turning off the MB and restarting holding down "option" gave us the choice of choosing startup disk. Choosing Macintosh HD takes us to the desktop and all seems fine.
However, we wanted to reinstall Leopard to create a new profile, etc. Inserting the disk and clicking "Install" prompts a restart. Upon restarting, the MB does not go to the normal install screen, where you first choose your language, but continues to restart and restart. It sounds the normal dong, and goes to a bluish grey screen, but it never makes it to the grey screen with the grey  before restarting.
With AppleCare on the phone we tried a lot of things, like restarting holding down "c," selecting the startup disk in Sys. Prefs. then restarting, resetting the PRAM twice, etc. My first AC rep. sent me to a second and we tried a lot of the same things to no avail.
After hanging up with AC, I closed the MB lid and noticed that instead of going to sleep, the "snore" light remained solid and every ten seconds or so the MB tried to wake itself, almost like the continuously restarting it was doing. I let it do this for a few minutes and the MB starting getting quite hot.
Then I tried a couple things. First I replaced the HD with one from another MacBook with the same results. Then I removed and reinstalled the memory DIMMS, thinking maybe something corrupted was in memory (or startup memory?).
So, is there a place where Macs store startup info besides in memory or on the hard drive? It seems like the MB is getting confused or lost trying to find the startup disk.
Thanks for any and all help. Cheers!

I don't know MacBooks really. Try running Apple Hardware Test by booting from the installer disc with the D key held down.
The Leopard disc either needs to be a retail version (black) or the one that came with the computer originally (gray) and will only work in the model with which it is supplied. Though unlikely, you might wish to double check that it really is the disc for that computer - it has been known before for people to get them mixed up if they own more than one computer.
As I suggested before, post this in the MB hardware forum since they are the ones with MB experience.

  • MacBook won't startup after latest security update

I Performed a Software update recommended security update this morning after backing up my Mac. It restarted and all was well, until I left this afternoon and then returned after my MacBook had gone to sleep. I attempted to wake it as usual, and the screen would not come back on. I forced it to shut down, and then restarted, but all I get is a white screen, then dark, no backlight, just nothing. I tried restarting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM, resetting the power manager, but all to no avail. I can get it to bong and light up with a forced restart, but nothing after that.
the MacBook was working perfectly before this update.
any thoughts as to what else I can do? I don't believe I have access to a startup disk To try.

Thanks for the advice, however, that startup command also provides no additional results. I've yet to find any key combination that advances the startup past the initial "bong", white screen to black/off.
The white "sleep" light stays on for a minute, then starts flashing as if sleeping. Only pressing the power button "wakes" it, but only the light stays solid for about a minute and then resumes. I must press and hold the power button to shut down the MacBook.
After about :10 last night I was holding the power button down well past the MacBook shutting down, then the "sleep" light flashed quickly and then the MacBook started up normally, as if nothing had happened. There was a dialogue box informing me the MacBook had shut down unexpectedly and Allowed me to send a report to Apple. Otherwise everything was normal. However, as soon as the MacBook went to sleep, I was unable to wake it again and I am back in the same boat I was before. I have not been able to reproduce the normal startup by holding down the power button either.
it appears the latest update may have totally screwed up the sleep process on my MacBook, or something related to that. Unfortunately, depending in the problem, it seems like I have no way to fix it myself now that Apple has moved to disk-less repair.

  • Mountain Lion on Macbook won't startup

Perhaps some guys have already asked many similar questions, but my case is slightly more awkward. So I decided to post a new thread and hopefully someone could help me out.
I started to experienced this wierd behavior of my macbook 13" last night. The symptom is like this:
When I powered on, I heard the start-up tone. But it sometimes remained black screen and sometimes showed me the apple logo without spinning gear.
What I have done so far is:
I power it off, unplug the power adapter, wait 15 seconds and attach the adapter, wait 5 seconds, then I press and hold power button for 5-7 seconds. The indicator blinks then the LED lights up (I don't really know what the term of this reset is). Now I see Apple logo and spinning gear.
The gear is spinning nicely first but stops soon. It looks like the system is not responding any more.
Then I have to press and hold power button and force it to shut down. I repeat step 1 and now I did a PRAM reset (option+command+P+R) before it shows me the apple logo. After the PRAM reset is done and it restarts again.
It shows me Apple Logo and spinning gear. Now the funniest thing happened. If I leave it spinning, it probably won't respond again soon. If I keep pressing some keys (e.g. up,down, left, right arrow keys), it will finally shows the login screen. I have tested a few times.
In addition, I have even start it in Verbose Mode, but the DOS-like screen stucks at "PCI configuration begin". I also tried to start it in safe mode but failed.
    Conclusion
If I started it normally by pressing power button once, it sometimes remains black screen. Sometimes it shows Apple Logo without spinning gear.
If I use step 1 method, it aways shows Apple Logo and spinning gear. But it will probably stop responding soon.
If I am pressing random keys while spinning gear still animating, I will most likely get the login screen eventually.
Does anybody encountered this before? Your helps and suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Which version of OS X are you running? If Lion or Mountain Lion, have you tried booting into Recovery mode?
If you're running an earlier version of OS X, do you have the original install discs?
I think - perhaps - that your hard drive may be failing.
    Call back...

  • Macbook won't startup, problems installing OSX with Firewire

    Hi,
I have a Macbook that has been unable to startup correctly for several months, and finally got around to taking a look at it. It usually stays at either the blue/grey loading screens, but occasionally it will make it to the login window, where it will then just stop functioning.
I was able to use a Firewire cable hooked up to my iMac, and when i turned on target disk mode, I was able to browse around some of the folders on my Macbook. Eventually, I will try to get into a folder, only for the connection to be timed out.
I don't care about the files on the Macbook (I've long forgotten them, and have done fine without whatever they were), so I tried popping in the OSX install CD into my iMac so I can install OSX on my Macbook via Firewire. I can't use the Macbook drive, because it has somehow become sunken into the case, and the slot for the drive is not lined up with the slot on the case.
I load up the OSX install CD application, hit the button to restart my iMac, and.... nothing. It just retarts itself every 15 seconds. If I pull out the Firewire cable, it still happens. I can't even get to gray Apple startup screen unless I take the install CD out.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm pretty poor right now, and would like to get this laptop running so i can give it to my sister.

If you want to use the iMac's DVD drive to reinstall OS X, this is the way to go:
Insert the install disc into the machine while it is running, then *shut down* the iMac.
Connect both computers using the Firewire cable.
Power on the iMac with the T key held down.
Power on the MacBook with the Option key held down.
You should see the iMac's hard drive & the OS X install disc as boot options. Choose the install disc.
From there, you can give reinstalling OS X another try.

Have you tried booting up in Safe Mode? It will do a similar check and repair on your HD.

  • MacBook won't startup - question mark in folder - is Hard Drive the problem

My 10 month old MacBook 2.0 gHz running 10.4.9 will not start-up. After 9 days of running with just putting it to sleep (once a log-out, log-in); I came down after breakfast to see the screen-saver -- but nothing else. OK I usually do a restart every 1-4 days, so now's the time.
That's when I hear a slight click-tack, click-tack and after 20-30 seconds see the folder with the Question Mark.
I've tried starting with control-command keys held down; tried resetting the PRAM and even resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)-- but nothing works--
I have lost only about 48 hours of information, as I have a backup from late 9 April 2007 (with 17 years of information...)-- and I am using SuperDuper! to transfer that to my G3-733 -- to one of the 2 hard drives I have on that Mac.
BUT WHAT about the data I've lost-- 2 days is not the end of the world, but the apple service store near me says it will take 10-15 days to get my MacBook serviced...
I PLAN TO PURCHASE DISKWARRIOR 4 in a few hours and try that. BUT since Disk Utility cannot see the hard drive (likely it has 'crashed', right? There is essentially nothing to see, right?-- I don't know how my $100 towards DiskWarrior is going to help or??
    ANY SUGGESTIONS APPRECIATED.
    Thanks and regards,
Steve Schulte on 12 April 2007

Well thank you again and I've clicked on SOLVED here-- You really have made my day (after I thought it had been ruined!) Writing to you from Belgium, it's nearly 6pm and the MacBook goes to the shop tomorrow.
Fortunately with SuperDuper! I have essentially lost nothing other than 2 days of out-going eMails and some other reports-- and now incremental backups will be a DAILY event!
One last idea: Is there any way to possibly activate the hard drive? I mean it stopped working while just sitting there-- it's not like I dropped it or anything-- just sitting on the coolpad! If I could just get it to spin I could (maybe) copy the data-- the computer works fine otherwise-- I've booted from an external HD with 99% of the files saved (as previously mentioned)-- just too bad...
OK "Live and Learn, or at least you live..."
    Again-- super help-- thanks!

  • Macbook won't startup after cover is closed.

I have a 13 inch macbook core2 duo running OS X 10.8.4, which has performed beautifully since I bought it until just recently.  The problem that I am having is that after starting up the macbook and using it, I close the cover until I need to use it again.  Most of the time, when I lift the cover to use the macbook, I will get the desktop screen and it will be ready to go.  Occasionally when I lift the cover, I will get a blank screen.  The screen is set to sleep after 15 minutes, but the computer is set to "never" sleep.  To "wake" my macbook, I have to open and close the cover "slowly".  Sometimes it will "wake" on the first attempt, other times i am forced to hold the "power" button down until it restarts.  If my memory serves me correctly, this problem surfaced with my upgrade of the OS X to mountain lion.  Any thoughts on how to fix this annoying problem?

Have you tried to press on the mouse to wake it.
    If not try too.
Because my mountain lion mac does not get back on when I flip the cover I have to click the mouse and
    Boom.
    So try it.
    I hope this helped.

  • I tried resetting my pram but now my MacBook won't startup it just stays in the grey apple symbol for 20 mins and then goes to the login page but does not login!

Help, my backscreen keeps flickering and I got told that resetting the pram (alt ctrl p and r) might fix it. But now it won't start up at all. It was working fine befor but now just goes on grey apple screen for 20 mins then the log on page comes up but it won't log in! I don't have the original install disk. I'm not sure what to do and I can't afford to take it to the apple store. What can I do?

  • Macbook won't startup after installing update to osx 10.4.8

After I installed the update to OSX 10.4.8 I get the screen with the spinning wheel and then a dialogue box that says the macbook needs to be restarted. Same thing every time. Any ideas?

the sign says to shut down cause of an unresolved kernel panic, right?
That can be because of non-apple software running in the background. for example a widget, gmail notifier, an automatic "check for updates" etc.
You can try holding down the shift key at start up to start without any "extensions". If that works then, the cause is some extra background program running.
I had my "you must restart" signs disapear by removing all such not necessary non-apple software. (rememember to remove both the application and the preferences from the prefencefolder in the library).
If thats not enough, You can also toss away all preferences from the prefences folder. You will have to reset settings in the various programs, but the programs are still there. In mail, you may have to make in import of your mail, which will still be in your MAIL folder in the library. Nothing essential will be removed.
If your roblem persist...THEN you should make an archive and install (or sometimes better..back up your mail, addressbook, calendar, documents, music, pictures, films..etc.. and make a clean install.) But really, most often its a small thing teasing, which can be fixed strategically instead of erarings everything. so try removing non-apple not neccesary auto-running software first.

  • My Macbook A1181 won't startup. After turn on I get white screen with a folder sign with question mark in the center.

My Macbook won't startup. After turn on, I get a white background screen with a folder icon (question mark inside) in the center. this icon even blinks
    The battery is charging.

It sounds like your hard drive is bad. If you can see it in Disk Utility you may still be able to get your files off of it. If you have one of the MacBooks with the removable battery it's very easy to put in a new hard drive.
Here's instructions on replacing your hard drive http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To buy a hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-5-SATA-HDD-HARD-DRIVE-EXTERNAL-ENCLOSURE-CASE-BOX-/120 636286623?pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item1c167ba69f
Put your old hard drive in an external case and after you've formatted your new hard drive and installed your operating system on it plug in your old hard drive and see if it is recognized by the new system. If so then transfer whatever files you want to the new hard drive

  • MacBook won't start from CD

My MacBook won't startup from it's CD. Instead, it ejects the disk.
If ANYOE has a solution to this probloem, PLEASE respond below.
    Thanks, Nathan.

There are a number of possibilities here.
Bad install disk. Test with another disk to make sure the MacBook is not ejecting all disks.
Bad optical drive. Test the disk in another computer.
Firmware password set on the MacBook which will not allow it to boot from any external source.
    Best of luck.

  • MacBook won't go past startup screen

My MacBook won't go past the startup screen.
This happened after I tried reseting my battery because it was not being recognized since it was drained completely. After removing the battery and re-inserting it was still not being recognized. So the support website advised to try downloading the latest update. However, before downloading the last item, it showed a message saying that there had been an error in the download, to go ahead and erase the current download and try again. However, when i clicked "ok" on the error box, it automatically went to re-start and I have not been able to go past the gray screen with the apple...the waiting circle just keeps going round and round.
I have tried to start it pressing the c key and the shift key but it did nothing. I then tried to start it with disk 1 and it does nothing either, plus the disk will not eject either.
Please help!!! what should I do???
Thank you so much for your time to help me with this.
    MacBook 1,1   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

To eject the disk, hold the trackpad button down as the machine restarts.
    Is your data backed up?
