MacBook won't turn on all the way

So for the past few weeks my battery has gone from having over an hour of charge to barely a half hour of charge.  I still bring it with me to class.  Yesterday my computer finally lost its charge during the spinning wheel of death as it was trying to re-authenticate the Internet certificate for my university.  I didn't have a chance to plug my computer back in for another six hours.  When I did, the screen was frozen and I had to force it to shut down.  I tried to restart it, and it wouldn't get past a gray screen with the apple icon and a spinning dash wheel of black.  I left it on for a bit before shutting it off and letting the battery charge some more.  I did this two more times before the battery was fully charged.
Finally, when the battery was fully charged, I tried to turn it on again and all I got was the original screen, like the past three times.  I went to bed and unplugged the adapter, to see if it would do anything in the morning.  I tried to turn it on again and got the same screen, so I turned it off and popped out the battery to see if anything was wrong with that.  I popped it back in and tried it again, and when that didn't work I shut it off and came on here for help.  I followed all the instructions for resetting the SMC as that was my only option left.  Now that I've done that, the gray screen still comes up, but once I leave it up for long enough the blue screen comes back up.  It doesn't say anything else, though; it's just a blank Mac-blue screen.
Thoughts?  Help?  I really don't want to take it in to get repairs because I have absolutely no cash (broke college student) and I need my computer working very very soon because it's finals week.
This is the first serious trouble I've had with my computer, other than a little battery problem I had weeks ago (water issues, got easily solved, though it nearly gave me a heart attack).  The fact that I've had my computer this long makes me wonder if I need to get any new parts or even just a new MacBook.

Try restarting with the 'Option' key held down. It should direct you to a screen that allows you to select your hard drive as the startup source. Once you're at your desktop, launch Sys-Pref's and ensure your drive is selected in 'Startup Disk'.

Macbook won't turn on all the way.  At first it only showed the grey apple logo, but now it says that I need to restart the computer by holding down the power button for several seconds or pressing the restart button.  I tried this already but it's not doing anything.  Please help.

    1) Make sure you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed.
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/
    2) On your PC, go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line exactly (meaning with the quotation marks):
    "c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader\loader.exe" /nojvm
    3) The Application Loader Wizard will appear -- click "Next."
    4) In the "Connection:" drop-down menu, you should see "USB-PIN: UNKNOWN". Click the "Next" button.
    5) You should then see a list of applications ready to be installed for your Blackberry. Hit Next and Finish and you are well on your way to getting your Blackberry back to life. Congrats! Just don't disconnect anything and let the lengthy process finish completely.
NOTE: If you do not see a list of applications mentioned in step 5 and instead see the message "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator," then you must download Blackberry's Operating System for your carrier and device.
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/BlackBerry_Operating_System_Downloads
Just select the appropriate carrier and network type, select your Blackberry model from the list and download the latest version. Install this download and follow the above steps again and you should be on the right path.

  • Help! My MacBook won't turn on all the way!

When I turn my MacBook on, the gray screen pops up and where the Apple logo should be, there's a circle with an X type thing going through it (more like a \ actually, kind of like the no smoking signs without the cigarette) I've tried restarting, what else can I do?

Try restarting with the 'Option' key held down. It should direct you to a screen that allows you to select your hard drive as the startup source. Once you're at your desktop, launch Sys-Pref's and ensure your drive is selected in 'Startup Disk'.

  • My brand new MacBook Air won't turn on all the way.

Hi my brand new MacBook Air won't turn on all the way. If I try to restart it or shut it down, it will go like it is starting up, but goes to a gray screen and stays there. I can see the mouse and move it, but it won't turn all the way on. What is wrong with it? It had been working fine since I got it, but today it hasn't been.

You may have to see if troubleshooting this issue can help, though the instructions on a process of elimination by symptoms are tedious in the following support article, and are suggested to be performed ahead of trying the process described in the title.
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
For the actual SMC reset, note subsection in above, instructions click-open on blue text:
    >Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
If the computer does not shut down, and just hangs there, try pressing the power button down for 15 seconds. Check the suggestions in the above article to see if any of them can be used, if the computer will power-up.
There is another item that sometimes can help, but the main issue you say could be resolved by the SMC reset; this other thing is involved NVRAM (non-volatile random access memory) so here's an article about it.
    •About NVRAM and PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    >Resetting NVRAM/PRAM opens in above, click-to-see instructions on how to reset.
You may have to call ahead to the nearest Apple Store for an appointment to see a Genius; or at authorized reseller, their service product specialist who should be trained to understand how to proceed, just in case there is a hardware issue behind the symptoms. When you call, be sure to have the serial number and purchase date available, when you call an official store.
Or use the 'Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support' to start the process...

    Hopefully this helps somewhat.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • MacBook Won't Boot Up All The Way

Hi, I have had my macbook for quite a while, and it has had problems before like a non working battery and random brightness changes but ever since I installed the latest security update it will not boot up all the way, first it takes a long time for it to pass the white screen with the Apple logo and loading circle, after that it reaches a blue screen, with no response. Once it made it to my desktop background but none of the icons or dock showed up. Any help?

I have the same problem mentioned in the original message. I downloaded the updates and my computer will no longer boot up. I put in Disk one of the install disc, but that did nothing and now I can't get the disk to eject. I was going to try disk 2, but can't get disk 1 out.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If this doesn't work then you will need to erase the drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch:
    Erase and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. When completed quit DU and complete the Snow Leopard installation.

  • Macbook won't start up all the way, just gray screen then shuts off...

When I turn my mac book on, it starts up and has the apple logo and the spinning gear thing. then after about 30 seconds or so, it shuts off. I tried the install disc and held c, then tried to repair my hard drive thing, but it said it had an error like this: "the underlying task reported failure on exit" and then under that it said something about 1 volume like not working or something and that was in red. anyone know anything else I could do to fix it? thanks

    Hey man,
I regret to inform you that I am having the same issue. And I have found that EVERYTHING I have tried has not worked.
You can try all the things that are on the troubleshooting forum right here in the support section. But it didn't work for me. I even tried some further stuff.....to no avail. Some poeple have told me that I need to take out the RAM and try switching that. Haven't gotten to try that yet.
But from what I can tell right now, I'm gonna end up having to loose all my data and send it in and get a new computer. Which I like the sound of "a new computer"....but DON"T like the sound of "lost data." I'm a writer and musician...and I've archived my files on that of my music and writing....alas, the mourning process has begun.
But I hope that you end up in better shape! And do let me know if you find anything that works!!

  • Curve 9300 won't turn on all the way, please help!

My daughter has a blackberry curve 9300. It froze on her so she tried to reboot it and now its gets 3/4 of the way and reboots again. Ive tried everythings possible like desktop manager and jl_cmder but nothing seems to work. If anyone has any suggestions i would be very greatful

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB):
With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain a known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Curve 8520 won't turn on all the way, please help!

I have a blackberry curve 8520, i bought it last month sometime.
I woke up yesterday morning and the balckberry was off, and would not switch on after i pushed down the ON button. So I charged it for a while, and still, it wouldnt switch on. Then, i took it off charge, took out the battery put the battery back in and it rebooted. The loading bar went right to the end, and the logo of my service provider appeared. And that's when it stopped loading. All that will show is the logo, it wont turn off, unless i take the battery out again.
I had downloaded an app the night before it stopped working off appworld, could that have affected it? I tried to link it to my computer, but it wont let me remove or add applications.
I did take out the battery for hours, and the SD card. It still wiil only turn on until my service provider's logo.
PLEASE HELP! Any advice would be helpful.

  • Computer won't turn on all the way

When I turn the computer on, it goes to the gray screen with the apple icon with the "blinking" circle under it. Eventually it makes a loud sound, like an airplane is going to take off, but won't go any further. Any suggestions?

Have you tried starting up using your system disk(s)?
Insert the disk and do a restart holding the C key down, then go into Utilities/Disk Utility/First Aid.
Run First Aid and repair permissions,it may sort something out.

  • Galaxy S4 won't turn on all the way

My Galaxy S4 won't completely turn on. It gets to the Verizon screen and just stops, it's not necessarily frozen, it just pauses and doesn't get any further than. I've never had this problem before and I've only used the original charger for it so I don't know what would've caused this to happen.

I'm having that problem now...I tried the battery trick- didn't work.  I travel for a living and my phone is my lifeline- use it for scheduling, navigation, email/web, etc.  I tried trying it on this morning prior to going thru airport security, by the time I got thru and to my gate, the phone was EXTREMELY HOT to the touch.  I had also been getting error messages the two weeks prior saying "security policies stopped" or "amazon stopped", etc.- related?
does anyone have a contact email where I can contact verizon?  going thru the website now and this was the only contact info i could find...unless you want to call!  starting to loose faith after 14 years with them....

  • HT1688 my iphone 4 wont powerup completely, WON'T TURN ON ALL THE WAY!!

my iphone 4 wont do anything, all it will do is stay black except the apple icon appears in the middle of screen when i try powering it on, but then it just stays that way.  or i can power it off and then it is just a completely black screen.
    please help

You can try resetting it (by holding the on/off and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo - ignoring the off slider that appears first - then releasing), but I doubt that will work.  If it is continuously showing the Apple logo, you'll probably have to force it into recovery mode to restore it.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808.

  • My iPhone won't turn on all the way. It just has the apple and white background

I've tried pressing the top button and home button but still doesn't work

    Hello Evelyn,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone.  It is definitely inconvenient and frustrating when you are not able to access your iPhone.
I recommend following steps 4-6 below for an issue like this:
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
You can find the full article here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
If you get to step 5, I recommend backing up your iPhone before performing the restore:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

It's been stuck on this screen, and I keep resetting it, but nothing will work. My computer won't acknowledge it's plugged in to restore it either
