Macbook won't wake from sleep
My macbook won't wake from sleep. I have to power down and restart. I have also noticed that when it is asleep, the sleep indicator light doesn't pulse, it just stays on steady. Could this be a bug in mavericks? I have a Seagate external hard drive that I use for my Time Machine backups that it always connected. But ejecting it before the macbook goes to sleep doesn't seem to solve the problem.
Any advice would be appreciated.
You can access System Logs and other information on the computer's status in Console utility; where there are endless lists of all the processes ongoing in the Mac OS X. There are specific log-out and other automatic items the system will post to such logs.
•OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357
Such articles are helpful in so much as they also have additional links.
Perhaps the computer is not going to sleep. The system logs can tell this.
Regarding power management, sleep, and other activities, have you read through the article about the System Management Controller to see if any of the items listed there can help? They'd take time to go through the list. And the end item is a reset of the SMC, after reading through and troubleshooting from the list.
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
A good idea is to make a backup of your content in the computer, to an external hard disk drive, so when or if you end up totally erasing the hard disk drive (to include secure erase one-pass overwrite) and reformat GUID, that an all new system could be installed on there, in part of a larger troubleshooting effort.
Actually, if you have an externally enclosed hard disk drive with its own power supply, (not port power) and then use Carbon Copy Cloner (see Bombich software) to make a bootable clone of your entire system to a large enough external drive capable of booting in OS X, then you could get to the bottom of this issue. While keeping a boot copy of what you already have, because you can run the computer from an external clone.
•Mac Backup - Carbon Copy Cloner:
http://bombich.com/
A good source for external drives that can handle clones
is macsales; or a place to look to compare real details.
The problem could be based in software, or in hardware. Troubleshooting against either possibility is how to resolve this problem. Some models of earlier MacBook & other intel-based Macs do not really like Mavericks; or perhaps like it less than an earlier system it may have shipped with. The earliest like Snow Leopard best.
Anyway, there is a solution but it won't be a one-liner.
I've done some 40 hour days, troubleshooting issues.
Worst problem for me was buying one w/Applecare.
Good luck & happy computing!

Macbook won't wake from sleep - replaced logic board and batteries already
I have a 13" White Macbook on 10.5.5 that occasionally won't wake from sleep. This will happen with nothing plugged into the Macbook except for the AC adapter. I have done the firmware upgrade, reset the SMC, reinstalled Leopard from the DVDs twice, brought it into Genius and had the ram, sleep switch, and the logic board replaced. There are no bluetooth devices attached to the computer.
I've searched the forums but haven't found a definitive answer yet.
Message was edited by: multiphrenicI've experienced the problem as well. I have the new aluminum macbook with all factory specs and no mods, except that I changed it from smart sleep to the original old mac behavior of instant sleep. It is intermittant and with mine, I've noticed that when the screen is open, the computer appears to be completely off, but when I close the computer the light on the front of the computer comes on. The only resolution I've found so far is to hold the power button for 5 seconds for a hard power down and then push it again--everything works fine.
There is indeed a sudden drop sensor, and in fact, it did happen after I accidentally hit the corner of my mac once on a tv while trying to set it down. That could be the answer...we might have to try disabling that because quite honestly, if I drop my mac while its on, I'm going to be more worried about the screen, the case, even the cute little plastic apple than the hard drive (I have backups galore). -
MacBook won't wake from sleep. Won't start.
Posting this as an answer to people searching for what I searched for. Now don't do this without doing the SMC reset, etc. first. I have a macbook that my wife let totally run down on the batteries. It went to sleep. She turned it on, and it didn't make it back up before the battery went dead. It was in a state where it would not read the keyboard at all, so all the suggestions from apple to take the battery out, hold the power key down, boot holding various keys, etc. were of no use. Try all of these other things first! I bet this is a one in a million state.
Anyway, since the machine was trapped in a place in the "boot" sequence where it wouldn't read the keyboard, and draining the power didn't help, it just kept indicating sleep and wouldn't start, I was pretty dismayed. Before sending it back to Apple, I figured I had nothing to lose. So, I took out the memory cards. (Again, don't do this if you're not comfortable with the procedure. I had installed this memory, so I was. Plugged in, and tried to power up without any RAM. (Failed, of course.) Unplugged, put RAM back in, and Voila! Happy Mac. Apparently changing the basic hardware configuration ticked off the started sequence enough to realize that something was wrong, so it started over again where it should be.
Hope this helps a desperate person whose wife's mac is in a coma. Funny thing about macs, she was acting like a pet had died. Never got that upset about her gateway.
If there's a question here, it's : Anyone else ever seen anything like this? My guess as to what happened came from reading MAC OSX, a systems approach. Any clever folks out there who want to correct or comment on my diagnosis?Hey, I know its an old post but I dont find any information on internet about this problem and it seems like you are the only one who posted this so are you still having this problem?

OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep.
Since upgrade to OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep. Tablet lights are on in morning and fans running like crazy, but it requires hard quit and start. Tried with no apps running, no change. It was fine before this last update. Wasn't the recent firmware update supposed to fix this issue? It seems to have started one for me.
I have the exact same problem with my Macbook Pro OS 10.8.4. What happens is: I work on the train, press cmd/alt + eject to put to sleep..pop it in my bag...get home or office... open the lid...and nothing! Battery indicator shows I have plenty of juice but it will not wake up no matter what key I press.
The only difference between use on the train and home/office is the plugging in of peripherals and mains power. It happens sparadicially, perhaps once or twice a week and I always send a 'panic report', so somewhere there will be approx 20 reports of this fault at Apple. -
Since upgrading to version 10.8.2 my MacBook Pro (late 2009) won't wake from sleep is her anyway I can fix this?
> during the entirety of this process the cursor was a "busy" pinwheel/beach ball/whathaveyou for a solid 30 minutes before I turned the computer off with the power button.
All that cursor means is that it is busy trying to do something. You can see if force quitting solves the problem with a simple force quit using command-option-escape. If you are having issues with iCal quitting, sometimes it doesn't always know whether or not it is properly communicating with a particular calendar. This can be a Mobileme issue, or even a phone synchronization issue, or a network issue reaching a shared calendar. Shutting down a machine directly from a cursor is the last step one should try, only after all others have failed. If you have done this in the past, lurking corruption can get worse each time with the directory, and upgrading the system will only enhance any corruption already present. When you restart your Mac, does everything appear to be normal? -
Macbook Pro 13" won't wake from sleep
Have mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13" that repeatedly won't wake from sleep. Either putting to sleep via lid closure or sleep command, seems to enter sleep OK. Sleep light slowly flashes indicating sleep. When I open lid, light goes out but screen doesn't come on. I have hold power button down to force it off and reboot. Very annoying. Occasionally, the laptop is warm and you can hear the fan running.
I have taken to Genius Bar twice to no avail. They could duplicate the problem the first time I had it in and ran some type of software repair. Didn't permanently fix issue. Second trip they tech thought it might be one of the two internal sleep switches. She ordered them but when they ran diagonsics on those switches, the said they were good and didn't replace or repair anything.
I have replaced both HDD and RAM and reinstalled 10.8 but problem continues. Any suggestions? Not sure if this will help--but my MacBook was having similar problems. It would fall asleep and then when I would try to wake the computer, the screen would stay black but the computer was running.
Here is what I tried:
Turn of your mac
Press the power on button
Immediately after you press the power on button: hold down the following 4 keys:
Command + Option + P + R. Continue to hold them down until you hear your mac make the power on sound twice. Once you hear it twice, let go of all keys.
This should re-set the sleep settings. Worked for my computer, I hope it works for you if you haven't already tried it. -

- Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?
You may try the following steps:
1. Reset SMC as per the following article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US. If this does not resolve the issue then go to step 2.
2. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/System Configuration and remove a file called powermanagement.plist (drag it to trash, might prompt for a password). Restart the mac thereafter. If this does not resolve the issue, boot to safe mode as per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455 and check the issue there. If it works there, you will have to remove the following files to check Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems, HD/Library/Caches and then restart the mac.
Let me know if this works. -

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6)
Use Software Update or the OS 10.6.8 combo update to update your OS. Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer as well as your USB connected devices. When done, repair permissions and restart your computer. -
I held off from posting this until I'd scoured the boards looking for ideas, but I'm totally out.
Every since I updated to 10.4.8, my MacBook Pro won't wake from sleep. I've tried resetting the SMU and PRAM, enabled and disabled bluetooth device wake from sleep, and installed the latest EFI Firmware update that was just released. I've now narrowed it down to the 10.4.8 and a change in how it handles Expresscards. If I have my NitroAV FW 800 card plugged in during a session, it seems to prevent the MacBook from going to sleep properly. According to various Console messages, the PCI device prevents the computer from going to sleep, and /or places the computer into System Doze instead, from which it won't wake. The sleep light stays fixed and steady, only disappearing if I press the power button (it only reacts to the power button). From there the screen remains dark and all plugged in device fail to respond. I can hear the drive spin back up.
It reacts the same whether or not I eject the card before putting the computer to sleep. This behavior was not present before installing 10.4.8 and having fallen back on a back up of my 10.4.7 install, can say it's not present in the older OS version. I was hoping last night's EFI firmware update would deal with this, but after having installed it and 10.4.8 anew, I'm having the same old results.
If anyone has any new ideas or can direct me toward how I can make sure the folks at Apple see this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

MBA won't wake from sleep while connected to VGA Display
Since a few days I'm using a VGA Display connected through the official Apple Mini Displayport - VGA Adapter. However, when I put my MacBook Air to sleep and then close the lid (otherwise closing the lid will just continue on the display). Keeping the monitor attached, it won't wake from sleep anymore. Disconnecting the adapter at that moment won't make any difference. What troubleshooting steps can I make?
I usually...
Take out the charger
take out the battery pack
reinsert the battery pack
Then click the power switch
(if you have low battery I'm sure it would be a good idea to plug in the adapter again -
MacbookPro won't wake from sleep and reboots
Since installing Yosemite this morning, my MacbookPro won't wake from sleep, it reboots. I have also had one instance of a black screen forcing a hard reset. On rebooting I get a popup about a graphics error, my machine is a 2013 model so I wouldn't have expected any compatibility issues and it was rock solid until I upgraded the OS, any thoughts?
And this is the panic report I get every time:

Compter won't wake from sleep mode
My Pavilion 17 notebook computer, purchased in Oct. '13, won't wake from sleep mode; I must shut down and reboot each time. I know this is not due to Windows 8, as I have another Win 8 computer that works normally.
I've done some more experimentation and found a workaround. I had Sleep and the Screensaver both set to Never, and by activating the Screensaver the wake up issue has gone away. This doesn't change the fact that there is an issue with my ATV sleeping when it shouldn't and failing to wake up, but having the screensaver active stops it sleeping in the first place I guess.
It's slightly annoying because I like to have music playing with the description and album art running, and this disappears when the screensaver comes on, but it is better than unplugging the thing every time I use it. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update, because it only appeared in the last one. -
IMac won't wake from sleep since Lion!
Since installing Lion my iMac (intel core 2Duo) won't wake from sleep properly using my wireless keyboard, trackpad or magic mouse! I haven't changed any settings and I have to hold down the power button to force shut down and then restart! Any help?? x
Hi all
Finally went to the Genius Bar to ask the question as nothing has worked. They said I needed to reset my PRAM. I did it (Following these instructions... http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 ) and it worked.
So relieved....it was really annoying me.
Hope this helps others with the same issue.
Thanks

PowerBook won't wake from sleep mode
My PowerBook G4 won't wake from sleep mode. I open the lid and nothing happens. I hold down the power button and nothing happens. I resetted the PMU and it will wake up and I am able to login and then it goes back to sleep mode. What should I do please help? And if my computer is dead, is there any way to retrieve my information saved on the hard drive?
this would happen to me when my battery was dead. you test the battery life? (little button on bottom near battery)
I'd make sure it was plugged in and let it charge for 10 minutes or so. then try restarting it if it doesnt wake up by itself. -
Suddenly won't wake from sleep.
All was well but suddenly the Powermac G4 (gigabit ethernet) won't wake from sleep. Tried resetting the PMU (battery out and button pushed). Tried resetting the PRAM. Tried deleting the energy preference file. Even tried installing 10.5 on this old baby (runs just a slowly as ever, but startup takes an age). Can't run hardware testing because there's a bad firewire on the motherboard and it just stops there. Don't know what else to do. Why? this is my music server and it uses just as much power as my refrigerator if left running all the time but only needs to run when playing music.

one PCI card with 4 USB

System Power Settings:
System Sleep Timer: 60
Disk Sleep Timer: 10
Display Sleep Timer: 10
Sleep on Power Button: No
Automatic Restart on Power Loss: No
Wake on AC change: No
Wake on Clamshell Open: Yes
Wake on LAN: Yes (does not respond)
Wake on Modem Ring: YesIf the SMC reset doesn't work try this.....
If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Try resetting the PRAM. This should reset the NVRAM on most machines, which is the suggested fix.
Then put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong. The restart is very important.
Good Luck! DALE
