Macbook won't wake up after being closed

(Sorry for the wall of text)
This is a problem I've been having for some time now. Sometimes, after closing my macbook (and therefore putting it to sleep), it won't turn back on after I open it again. The sleep light will stay on, the hd won't start spinning, the screen will stay black, and the caps lock/num lock lights won't turn on. I've tried pressing every key combination I can think of, tried the power button, unplugged and re-attached the power adapter, and tried opening/closing it again. I even completely re-installed OS X but that did not solve the problem and it just happened to me again, shortly after installing 10.5.5. I ned up having to hold down the power button to force my computer to turn off and then start it up again. (I've also noticed that starting up after one of these incidents will cause the screen to flash white once and then go to the normal start up screen). Anyone have any suggestions? (It's a 2nd gen macbook with the specs listed below)

How do you know? I've tried everything, and each "fix" seems to work temporarily.
Let us know if you have the problem again.
I've reset the SMC, repaired disk, repaired permissions, and eventually it happens again -- I open the cover, the screen is blank, and the only way to use the computer is to hold the power button down until it goes off and then turn it back on. This fixes it for a while, too. That's why I don't think any of those other "fixes" are actually doing anything.

  • Macbook Won't Wake Up After Disconnected From Monitor

At home I connect my Macbook to an Apple Cinema 30 and USB keyboard/mouse. During use the Macbook lid is closed. Frequently when disconnected, opening the lid won't wake up the computer. The screen remains black. No amount of closing, reopening, and pressing keys will wake it up. I've been hard rebooting when this occurs.
    Anyone know a solution?

That's +plug the monitor back in to the laptop+, try to wake the computer, then unplug the monitor while it's awake.
This shouldn't work that way, though. I do this every day. I have external monitors at home and at work, and I'll put it to sleep, unplug the monitor, take it to the other location, plug the monitor in, then wake it up. All of my external monitor windows appear on the external monitor when the computer wakes up. But if I open it without an external monitor attached, it will wake up and show the attached screen's contents for a second or two, then there will be a blue screen, and then it will reappear, this time with all of the external monitor's windows over on my laptop screen, too. My problem is that if I unplug before it's REALLY asleep, or wake it up before plugging the monitor in, then I have to go drag all of my external monitor windows back over, which is annoying. Sometimes when I wake up wrong with the external monitor plugged in all of the stuff goes to the external monitor and the laptop screen is black, and when I unplug the monitor I get the blue screen and then everything is on my laptop screen.
There is definitely some "magic" where the laptop "knows" what you want it to do -- except when it doesn't!

  • Won't wake up after being asleep

Hello. My MacBook Pro will not wake up after sleeping and I have to force shut down by holding the on/off button for 10 seconds. However, if iTunes is playing, it will awake by touching the mouse!
Anybody have any thoughts? I tried resetting the PRAM to no avail.
    Thanks
    Tom

I used to have this problem when i first upgraded to 10.5 and again when i upgraded to 10.5.2. I saw in Console under all messages that certain dashboard widgets were giving error messages upon waking from sleep. For the initial 10.5.1, it was Radar In Motion and Fidelity Market Monitor. I got rid of them and a few others just for good measure and the problem went away completely. This time I was getting the youtube widget showing an error so i got rid of that and so far so good. Just go to Applications>Utilities>Console and show log list and look under all messages for the time that the computer woke up and see what it says. Hope that helps you.

  • Macbook Air 2011 won't wake up after sleep

My Macbook Air 13" 2011 won't wake up after sleep.  I've taken it to apple genies bar, but they offered to replace my logical board!
I bought the Macbook Air in last August.  Why cannot they replace a new laptop???

One thing you want to do is "Repair Permissions" in Disk Utility before you upgrade to a new revision, and afterward do the same thing.
On occasion files will become inaccessible to the logged-in user and cause certain components of the OS from acting cooperatively. This can most often happen during/after an update. Also, by resetting permissions before an update, it is to ensure that the update process itself can accomplish all tasks.
You may also want to consider applying/re-applying the downloaded 10.7.3 "Combo Update" from the Apple.com/downloads/ section. After resetting permissions, of course.

  • Laptop won't wake up after closing lid

The laptop won't wake up after closing the lid. It hasn't happened before. There have been no updates or changes for a day or two. The power button light and the fan are on, the caps lock key is flashing, and the wireless light is orange instead of white, like it is when powered up. I have tried ctrl-alt-del, every fn key, the esc key, the pause key, and every comination of keys that made any sense and many that didn't. I tried disconnecting the power, removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds. I tried leaving the battery out while disconnected from power for 24 hours. I have looked at different forums for clues, but haven't found any help.
My next step will be to remove the hard drive to get the data, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    HI @tootall69
    Thank you for your reply.
You can try this step as it will restore the power schemes back to the defaults.

What happen is, it won't wake up no matter what i do until a way of reset SMC. BTW i try stick by stick to plug in together with my original 4gb RAM together found out 1 was ok and other one was not. I already try reset smc, pram, delete startimage, delete powermanagement.file and also sudo hibernate 0-7. Did anyone had this same issue of me. • Macbook won't wake from sleep

My macbook won't wake from sleep.  I have to power down and restart.  I have also noticed that when it is asleep, the sleep indicator light doesn't pulse, it just stays on steady.  Could this be a bug in mavericks?  I have a Seagate external hard drive that I use for my Time Machine backups that it always connected.  But ejecting it before the macbook goes to sleep doesn't seem to solve the problem.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

You can access System Logs and other information on the computer's status in Console utility; where there are endless lists of all the processes ongoing in the Mac OS X. There are specific log-out and other automatic items the system will post to such logs.
•OS X:  When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357
Such articles are helpful in so much as they also have additional links.
Perhaps the computer is not going to sleep. The system logs can tell this.
Regarding power management, sleep, and other activities, have you read through the article about the System Management Controller to see if any of the items listed there can help? They'd take time to go through the list. And the end item is a reset of the SMC, after reading through and troubleshooting from the list.
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
A good idea is to make a backup of your content in the computer, to an external hard disk drive, so when or if you end up totally erasing the hard disk drive (to include secure erase one-pass overwrite) and reformat GUID, that an all new system could be installed on there, in part of a larger troubleshooting effort.
Actually, if you have an externally enclosed hard disk drive with its own power supply, (not port power) and then use Carbon Copy Cloner (see Bombich software) to make a bootable clone of your entire system to a large enough external drive capable of booting in OS X, then you could get to the bottom of this issue. While keeping a boot copy of what you already have, because you can run the computer from an external clone.
•Mac Backup - Carbon Copy Cloner:
    http://bombich.com/
A good source for external drives that can handle clones
is macsales; or a place to look to compare real details.
The problem could be based in software, or in hardware. Troubleshooting against either possibility is how to resolve this problem. Some models of earlier MacBook & other intel-based Macs do not really like Mavericks; or perhaps like it less than an earlier system it may have shipped with. The earliest like Snow Leopard best.
Anyway, there is a solution but it won't be a one-liner.
I've done some 40 hour days, troubleshooting issues.
Worst problem for me was buying one w/Applecare.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 1G iTouch won't wake up after sleep

1G iTouch won't wake up after sleep. When I plug it back into my laptop it does a complete reboot. Tried both reset and restore. Works fine as long as plugged in. It shows a full battery and drains properly but once it goes to sleep it acts like battery is fully discharged.

Is the iPod or the laptop going to sleep?
I can't tell for sure from your post.
When you restored, was it "as a new iPod" or from a backup?
What software is on the Touch?

When I want to do something like go out then I close the Lid and then I can't get the laptop to wake up again, I have tried some stuff but nothing seem to work.

Anyone that can help me with this issue?
    thnx.

These are good news but could you please post a short instruction how you have solved this? I think it would be interesting for other users here in the forum!

  • My macbook air doesn't start after being for 2 months off, My macbook air doesn't start after being for 2 months oof

My macbook air doesn't start after being for 2 months off? What can i do?

Plug it in and leave it on the charger for about 5 minutes then try to turn it on. If that doesnt work, contact apple and have it sent out for repair or take it to your local apple store. they will probably cover it for free if no physical damage has been done.

  • ThinkPad T420i won't wake up after going to sleep.

My T420i won't wake up after going to sleep (using Fn F4 or close the laptop or time out).  The computer was wiped clean and reinstalled with only Windows 7 professional and some Levono softwares.  BIOS, windows and all drivers are up to date.  The only way to get it back is hold the power button to reboot it.  When it reboots, i get improperly windows shut down error.

I'd guess it's ACPI related issue. Check out ACPI driver and correspondent items in Control panel.
Energy report might be helpful too ("powercfg -energy" command within console window with administrator rights)

  • Mac pro won't wake up after installing Mountain Lion

After installing Mountain Lion in my Mac Pro it won't wake up after long periods of sleep. I have tried unplugging it for 15 seconds and plugging it back in and starting it back up. No help. I've reset the Pram with no change.
    Chuck

Two calls into tech support, but I think they may have helped me fix this.
    CHECK:
    \Library\LaunchAgents
    \Library\LaunchDaemons
    \Library\StartupItems
remove any third party software and set aside.  (they told me I could keep some adobe, microsoft and HP items)
    THEN CHECK:
System Preferences --> Users + Groups -->Login Items
remove any third party stuff from in there.
I'll know tomorrow morning if this REALLY works, but it dfefinitely allowed my computer to sleep and wakeup over a short period of time.

  • My early 2008 MacBook won't wake up from sleep

My early 2008 MacBook won't wake up from sleep periodically. I will have to hold the power button down and then restart when it acks up. It did this twice yesterday & once today.

Try resetting the PMU (power management unit).
    Remove battery and power adapter.
Hold down power button for 10 seconds.
Reinstall battery and attach power adapter.
Hold down Command-Option-P-R, a total of four keys, and press power button. Don't release the keys.
Continue holding the four keys until you hear the startup sound twice, then release.

  • MacBook Air won't wake up after sleep

I've been reporting sleep problems with my iMac for a while in the past. No-one here would take it seriously (probably hardware, your reports are incidents, no-one else has these problems) so I just went away and I disabled the sleep function of my iMac alltogether, and I won't select the "sleep" button in the login screen anymore, or select "sleep" from the apple menu. No sleep no problem, right?
*Well, I bought a Macbook Air three days ago, and in those three days I have had TWO occasions already where I wanted to wake the Macbook after sleep* (closed lid) and it wouldn't wake up. All I get is the rainbow mouse pointer and the Macbook is unusable unless I reboot it.
Mind you, nothing is connected to the macbook but the power cable, and I find it hard to believe that my Macbook Air would also suffer from 'hardware problems' like my iMac alledgedly is.
In all my time using OSX 10.4 on my 17" PowerPC MacBook pro I have never had any problems, but since switching to Intel Macs with 10.5 I have these "sleep" problems all the time.
What gives, and can I expect Apple to do anything about this problem that I've been having since I bought my iMac more than a year ago, and is now also spoiling my MacBook Air experience?

I have a Macbook Air and it also frequently (6 times out of 10) will not wake from sleep mode, only way to revive it is to hold down power button for 10 secs and force a restart. VERY FRUSTRATING!
I also occasionally use an external Apple 24' Screen (Non LED) and find that the MBAir will often freeze when you plug that into it or unplug it from it.. Perhaps I have a hardware fault on the MB Air? Or will this be fixed in software?

  • MacBook won't "wake" up from sleep, when being folded

When I "fold" computer it goes to sleep. But, when I flip up the screen again, my Mac won't "wake" up from sleep mode anymore.
Do anyone know how to fix this problem?
    BR
    Christian
I have a MacBook 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 duo, Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

    I've solved my problem.
I have reset my MacBook's PRAM settings.
    It's very easy: link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.
    Hope this helps
    Best regards,
    Christian
