Macbook wont boot up, might be in Sleep Mode

My Friends White first generation Macbook won't start up. The little light on the front is on, but not "glowing" like it would do when it's asleep. I can also feel a slight vibration as though the hard drive is spinning.
If I try a hard restart by holding down the power button, the light goes off and the vibration stops. But if I try to power up again, the screen flashes white quickly, as though starting up, but then the little white light comes on and the screen stays black.
I've tried an SMC reset as described on the support docs, but that does nothing.
Does anyone know what is wrong with the machine? Is it buggered?

This is a Fault of the newer Mac's Power management scheme. There is a LONG Thread on it somewhere on this forum.
Hold down the power button for 10 seconds then let it up. Then wait a few seconds and press it again. The system should start back up. If it doesn't then you have some type of hardware problem and you need to take it to Apple to be fixed or replaced.

  • My macbook wont boot up :-( HELP!!!!

    Hi
HELP!!! My macbook wont boot up.
I was deleting some files off my system last night, Id put them in the trash and deleted them (there was quite alot!!) and the screen gradually went black and told me i needed to restart my computer by holding down the power key.
I tried doingt this but it wouldn't restart.
I left it a while and tried powering up, it seems to turn over once but the chimes dont kick in and nothing happens, the little light (is it the sleep light?) does come on but nothing else.
I really really hope someone can help!

Since you are still using Panther, try booting from your System Install DVD. Try running the +repair disk+ & repair permission options.

  • My macbook wont boot up, black screen and the cd drive keeps making a constant sound. What to do?

My macbook wont boot up. When I turn it on, the screen turns black right away and the cd/dvd drive keeps making a constant "ejecting" sound.
The strange thing though is that once in a while starts up propperly, but suddely goes black again (after a min. or two), and the ejecting sound comes back. What to do, and yh, I've never done a back up so would it be possible to take out the HD and regain whats in there?
    Any help would be appriciated!

Hello. Try resetting the PRAM and SMC first.

  • My Macbook wont Boot, Power Light just lights up

I am having a HUGE Problem with my macbook pro. (Early 2011). I already brought this to the mac center but they could not find anything wrong with it. They said that the whole time it was with them their technicians did not find anything wrong with it.
The problem is that it wont boot up. The last time i was able to use my macbook pro (I am using it right now since it booted up) was 2 weeks ago. Today i tried my luck since i really needed to check my files and luckily it did boot up. but before this it would take an hour for it to boot up. After presing the on button the power light will turn on and after a few minutes a whirring sound will be heard. I will then turn off the Mac and turn it on again and the booting up sound will be heard. but last 2 weeks it was just whirring sound and after i turned it off and turned it on it wont boot up anymore until now.
I am really stumped as to what the problem of my Macbook is. Any help would be really appreciated.

Go through the steps - one by one - that ds store outlines in his user tip, Step by step to fix your Mac.
    Good luck,

  • Macbook wont boot (folder icon with question mark)

    Dear all,
I have macbook 13.3 (black one) for a year. This morning it just didn't boot and I got the question mark sign. I googled and discovered that it is probably a HD problem and the solution is: boot macbook from DVD install disk and try to repair.
My problem is, that I cant do even that. I put the original DVD in, after boot I pressed hold option. Then I got only mouse cursor but no icons (like the DVD is not inserted). I tried with C also, but nothing. It just wont boot from DVD.
Does anyone has a solution, how can I force macbook to boot from DVD?

Make sure the disc is clean with no scratches in it. Also, you can try running fsck to check the disk.
    1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
    2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. If it finds a problem and repairs it, immediately run fsck again until the drive checks OK.
    4. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit should bootup normally.

  • Macbook wont boot after updating ram

    Please help,
I have a white macbook mid 2010 model.  Today I attempted to upgrade the RAM in my machine but to no avail.  The ram I purchased was 4 GB (1 x 4 GB) - DDR3 SDRAM - 1333 MHz DDR3-1333/PC3-10666 - Non-ECC - Unbuffered - 204-pin SoDIMM PNY 4GB DDR3 SDRAM. I already tried to upgrade a few years ago so I had 3gb or RAM in my machine.  I wanted to buy a 4gb stick and use it along side the 2gb stick that I have in now.  When I put both sticks in my computer just beeps and wont boot.  It will however boot, if i put either stick in alongside one of the original sticks that my machine came with, which would either give me 5gb or 3gb.  I have seen people with similiar issues and the answers given was bad ram or bad memory slots.  If the memory or the slot was bad, it would work at all no matter what combination you used so that really dosen't make any sense to me.  If someone could help me, I would appreciate it.

If you bought your RAM at a place that also sells PC RAM you may have gotten mislabelled RAM. PCs can handle different RAM speeds so they’ll often label higher speed RAM as a lower speed rather than make two different speeds of RAM. But Macs are much more picky. They require a RAM stick to be exactly 1066mhz not 1333mhz. The way to tell is to put one of your old RAM sticks in and it will force the new RAM to run at the correct speed. Your MacBook requires 1066mhz RAM not 1333mhz.
These are good online stores for Mac compatible RAM
OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_Whi te - They offer Mac tested RAM at very good prices.
Crucial Memory http://www.crucial.com/ - good place to buy RAM from all over the world. They also have an excellent memory selector that allows you to choose memory based on your computer's model
Data Memory Systems http://www.datamemorysystems.com/apple-memory.asp - another good, cheap place to buying RAM if you live in the U.S.

  • MacBook Pro (late 2008) automatic boot, does not get into sleep mode

    Good evening from Germany,
I have a problem with my MBP (5,1). Since last tuesday the MBP boots automatically after it had been shut down if the power chord is still attached to the MBP. As well when closing the lid it goes into sleep mode but after a couple of minutes it tries to wake itself resulting in lighting up the Apple logo on the back of the lid. After that it goes into sleep mode again and starts all over with the procedure ...-wake up-lid still closed-sleep-wake up-...
I did not install or update any software since that day, the power management options "wake on LAN", and "restart after powerloss" are decativated. I do not have any scheduled boot or shut down times set. I removed all login-items, had a look for the "com.apple.AutoWake.plist" and deleted it. I do not have or had any eyeTV application installed. I have no clue what could have caused this behaviour.
In case it helps, this is an excerpt from the system.log

That's what I was guessing as well. But unfortunately there is no other device connected to the MBP.
Here's a list of what I've tried so far:
    - login-items deleted
    - PRAM & SMC reset
    - no boot schedules
    - System Preferences Energy "Wake on Ethernet activity" deactivated
    - System Preferences Energy "Automatic reboot after power-loss " deactivated
    - eyeTV not installed (was never installed before)
    - "com.apple.AutoWake.plist" in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ deleted
    - mobileMe sync deactivated
    - ComboUpdate installed
    - booted in Safe Mode and tested
    - setup new user and tested if the problem persists (in Safe Mode too)
    - fresh install using a Time Machine backup
Well thanks for the that but let's keep writing in English I guess that's easier for both of us.

  • My macbook wont boot

As my macbook was booting the apple logo appeared then a circle with a slash, then it repeats and a folder with a ? in the middle pops up and nothing else happens. What does this mean and how can I fix it?! This was preceded by a battery problem for about a week. I discovered what the battery issue was reading some of the posts but now cant try the prescribed update because I cant boot the computer. Please help?

Boot from your system install DVD, run Disk First Aid from your Disk Utility and repair your permissions.

  • Macbook - Unplug AC power and Mac enters sleep mode

I am using a Macbook with a Dell 24 inch monitor, external keyboard and mouse. The lid is usually closed and I am familiar with the best practices how to use sleep mode.
I have now found that, in the above scenario, unplugging the power cord puts the Mac to sleep immediately. The batter is charged at 99% or better.
The reason why I want to unplug: let it drain to condition the battery according to Apple recommendations.
I am aware of the workaround: disconnect external peripherals, let Mac run on battery until it is drained (I like to think that the peripherals perhaps are part of the issue here).
I was simply wondering if putting the Mac to sleep when AC power is disconnected is a feature, or if anyone here has a suggestion. This has not previously happened to me when I used the Mac without the monitor/keyboard.
    Thanks!

It requires the power adapter when using an external display. The electronics to drive a DVI port uses some power, and they assume power must be available if you have some place to plug in the external display, so they don't allow it to run an external display on battery only. To drain the battery, disconnect the external display, and run it at full brightness with the llid open and Energy Saving system preference set to never sleep the drive, display, or computer, and to run for maximum speed. You only have to calibrate a battery once. NiCads needed conditioning. Lithium-ion don't. Under some conditions you might extend the life slightly, but full discharges reduce life, so getting it just right is unlikely.

  • Macbook pro freezes after coming out of sleep mode

Lately my 13" early 2011 Macbook Pro has been locking up when in sleep mode. All I get is a blank screen and the cursor which responds, but no buttons pushed on the keyboard resolve issue. Resolution thus far has been to hard boot the macbook... Anyone have any ideas how to troubleshoot or determine cause of issue?

    Try Reset SMC.

Ok so my MacBook Pro 17" with osx 10.6.8 will not awaken from sleep mode. when attempting to wake it up the screen dosent come on and the mouse and keyboard do not receve any power. to get back on the computer i have to force a hard restart by holding the power button for 10 seconds then pressing it again. then it boots to where i left off when i closed the lid. i have read a few forums about this problem and i have went through all the steps of reseting various things and went as far as going into terminal using sudo to disable safe sleep and nothing helps. i noticed an unusual error in my console. here is a  copy of my console log. the one in question is  {7/14/13 4:52:43 AM com.apple.UserEventAgent-Aqua[118] dontAutoLoad = EMPTY!}  someone please help me I am over 150 miles from the nearest apple store or authorised retailer
