Macbook wont go to sleep on its own

hi guys...my macbook wont go to sleep on its own. i mean, Energy Saver Preferences is set to turn-off the display in 1 minute, and to make the computer sleep in 3 minutes - but the macbook wont turn off the display or sleep, based on the settings. Bt the way, when i make it sleep (Apple menu or by using Command-Option-Eject), the computer sleeps - no prob when sleep is manually executed.
Help please!
Thanks

Yes.  But (a) sometimes you never can, (b) it may be caused by something you need or refuse to part with, and (c) it's just not worth the effort if there is an simple alternative solution.
In my case I think (not 100% sure other than a usb cause) was/is (b); a non-apple usb wired keyboard with its own usb ports or a bluetooth dongle plugged into my 27"s usb port.  I am not about to part with either of them. And it just wasn't worth my time narrowing it down any further if that was at all possible so (c).
hi, i take your points, given you start your reply with "yes".
i'm in a similar boat and i've spent far too long scouring the apple discussions for a solution (with some issues you're better off googling than coming here for truth). i have also got a case open with my applecare coverage but the responses so far have verged on ignorant (i think they respond badly so you go away), so on we go.
i'm astounded that the terminal command pmset -g doesn't always provide an answer, but it seems a decent part of the solution. checking over the console and activity help too.
i've never had the issue with other hardware, so it must be a combo regarding the newer stuff + lion, wouldn't you say?

  • My Macbook Pro started freezing all the time & going to sleep on its own for no reason

I've been having trouble for a few weeks with my computer freezing way too often for seemingly no reason - I'm using it exactly the same way I always have with no problems, and even actively trying to have less applications open (which seems to have no effect). I can't always load simple webpages without it freezing and giving me the color wheel and it's just MUCH slower in general. It is seriously making it difficult to use my computer for work  or for fun...
It has also started going to sleep on its own - the screen will just go black (or sometimes BLUE) and the keyboard lights turn off, and the only way to get it to wake back up is to close the computer, wait, open it again and click or press a key. It doesn't respond to any keys/clicks until it has been closed and reopened.
It seems to overheat really easily lately as well - but it does not always overheat when it freezes.
SMC reset did not seem to have an effect. Activity Monitor doesn't show anything crazy, everything is pretty much 0% except Firefox around 7-12% as I'm typing this. 246 GB available on my hard drive so that doesn't seem to be the problem either. Right after restarting my computer it seems better but the problems quickly resurface...

Eric - I dont understand how I'd use caffeinate.  I am not running any code or particular script.  My system goes to sleep if surfing the web, or running Word or Excel, etc.
Or..  Are you saying I should go through and type 'caffeinate X' for all of my applications?

  • Macbook will not go to sleep on its own since Lion.

I have a macbook running Lion 10.7.5.  I also use an external monitor.  The macbook will not go to sleep on its own and I think it has something to do with the monitor.  Any suggestions?

You can test as to whether this issue has to do with the external monitor. Disconnect the display. If the MacBook now goes to sleep normally, then the issue is with the display. If it does not then the issue is with the MacBook.
    Best of luck.

  • My iMac will no longer go to sleep on its own!

    Help!
My iMac will no longer go to sleep on its own! No matter what my settings are under 'Energy Saver', the computer will NOT go to sleep. Rather, the monitor will just turn off and the white light on the front of the computer will come on. The white light does not 'throb', so I know it isn't sleeping.
I'm not running any weird applications preventing it from sleeping, I've tried booting in safe mode, and I've tried resetting the SMC.
This is a RECENT problem - I think it started occurring after installing the 1.0.1 firmware OR Mac OS 10.4.6 update. Does anyone else have this problem??
    AHH! Thanks for your help!
    Jonathan

    Hey everyone -
    Thanks for your suggestions.
David.Austin - yes, my power LED does not fluctuate, so I know the computer isn't sleeping, the display is just 'off'. I do have all my disks set to go to sleep. This is a recent problem - everything used to work just fine.
joejoe - I haven't yet tried zapping the PRAM (or NVRAM), but I give that a shot and reset the SMC (SMU) again. If that doesn't work I'm going to have to do a... re-install.
I'll report back with my results. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem.
Agreed - there is something wrong with one of those two updates.

  • IMac does not go to sleep on its own- HELP!

I have an iMac G4 17", it's about three years old, and I absolutely love it, except now it does not go to sleep on its own. It will go to sleep when you select Sleep from the Apple menu, but not when it has been inactive. In system preferences under the energy saver menu it is set to sleep after being inactive for five minutes (screen sleeps after three), and the screen does power down, but the computer itself never goes to sleep on its own (you can still hear the processor making noise (fans?) and the little white sleepy light doesnt come on) I can't seem to figure out what could be making it stay awake (no applications are running), I'm not sure if it has something to do with my external DSL modem (though i think i had the problem before i got the dsl), I tried turning off the "wake for ethernet network administrator access" and it didnt change anything. Any help?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
    Cheers!

  • IMac wakes from sleep on its own with Yosemite

After installing Yosemite, my iMac wakes from sleep all on its own multiple times throughout the day and night.  The screen does not turn on when this occurs and it goes back to sleep on its own.  I figured the my energy settings may have changed after the upgrade, but nothing is different.  I have no schedule set and the "wake for network access" is unchecked.

To my knowledge, any Mac that is 1. connected to power and 2. not powered down will wake periodically for the reasons I explained, and perhaps for additional reasons known only to Apple. If disabling "wake for network access" does not change anything, all I can say is that it's working as Apple intends it to work. Before you ask, I strongly discourage you from finding clever system "hacks" or workarounds to prevent your Mac from working as designed.
It may or may not be a bug. Whether it is or not though, if it bothers you, consider providing feedback to Apple.
When questions such as yours arise, it helps to look at iOS. iPads and iPhones will all periodically connect themselves for the purposes of downloading emails, Messages, alerts etc. There is no way to disable that, other than to completely power down the device, which almost no one does. Apple has been inexorably changing OS X to effectively implement iOS design features such as this – for better or worse is not for us to say.
May I ask why this concerns you? Perhaps that would lend some insight regarding possible solutions.

  • HP Photosmart 7525 e wakes up from sleep on its own hourly.

My Hp Photosmart 7525 wakes up from sleep mode approx. every hour. It is set up as wireless and usb. is there some setting or update that I need to apply to fix this problem?

Hi DanHannon, Welcome to the HP Forums!  I understand that your printer is waking up from sleep on its own hourly. I would try the following: 1.) Update the firmware. Getting the Latest Firmware and Product Updates. 2.) Plug the printer's power cable directly into the wall outlet, not a surge protector. Hope this information helps, and have a great day.

  • IMac won't go to sleep on its own

I set my iMac to go to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. Everything worked as it should until I updated Lion to 10.7.3. Now it seems that iMac never goes to sleep on its own. No new hardware installed whatsoever, every settings are the same as before. I even tried by not running any programs, and it still won't go to sleep unless I force it to. It's a mid-2011 iMac with core i5.
    Any ideas?

I don't have an explaination for a cause.  But in the end, if you don't figure out the cause, try using PleaseSleep which attempts to force the system to obey the energy saver preferences.
FWIW one explaination is that there is some process keeping the machine awake.  Look in the Activity Monitor for possible suspects.

  • Help needed - refuses to sleep on its own

My 733mhz powerpc g4 refuses to sleep on its own even though the energy saver settings are correct. OS10.3.9. No bluetooth devices attached, standard keyboard, mouse and monitor. ADSK cable attached, and a printer, that's all. Who can help? Many thanks,
    Uli

The workaround is to disconnect the cable before you want the Mac to sleep, and reconnect it when you want the computer awake.
Some USB devices, and your printer is apparently one of them, have the annoying habit of asking the computer, "Daddy, are you still awake?" every minute or two, sort of like my children when they were two years old and I was supposedly reading them a bedtime story. Short of swatting it with a two-by-four or disconnecting it, there's nothing you can do to stop it.

  • MacBook Pro 15" Late 2008 will not sleep on its own

My MacBook Pro will sleep just fine if I close the lid or select sleep from the Apple menu. It won't, however, ever fall asleep on its own. I've tried resetting the SMC to no avail. Any suggestions as to what I should look for?

Certain settings, e.g. printer sharing, can prevent timed sleep. If it's a brand new Mac and you migrated a fair amount of data from a previous computer, Spotlight may still be indexing. There are other possibilities as well. See this kbase article:

I just bought my macbook a month ago. It's a 13-inch mbp. Somehow my mbp keeps sleeping off on its own, even when I am using it.

  • Powerbook wakes and sleeps on its own

Just the other day my Powerbook started acting really strange. It will goto sleep on it's own, just like that. Usually I wake it up, but it won't always wake up - I click, press keys, hit the power button and get nothing. And then it may eventually wake up.
But it will also get into this cycle, where it wakes up, then goes back to sleep all on its own without the screen coming on. I know this because I hear the DVD drive do it's little clicking thing everytime it wakes up.
The other really odd thing, is that it sometimes has dimmed the screen off, and I have to use the function keys to turn the screen back on. Other times I press the function keys to bring the screen back and I can see very faintly the screen contents, and that the screen should be at full brightness, but it's not. I feel like this thing is posessed.
Now the strange coincidence is that the latch for the screen stopped working the exact same day. Related? I'm not sure. I did have to take it with me, so I put it to sleep by closing the lid and putting it in a tight case, and it appeared to have stayed asleep. I thought maybe the latch controlled the sleep mechanism, but it appears to be the angle the screen is at.
I Thought this was maybe related to that overheating trackpad thing, but my console reads something different. Just "System Sleep" and "System Wake". There is nothing about overheating showing up.
Now the other strange thing, is that the light on the latch button has never really worked correctly as far as I Recall. Sometimes it's pulsing when I'm working, sometimes it's off when it's sleeping, I don't even know the correct behaviour anymore.
Now last thing is that my illuminated keyboard doesnt seem to work. It's as if the computer doesn't know it exists, I press the Funciton keys and nothing happens, and I can't find it anywhere in the sytem prefs.
So I've done the usual, reset the PMU, startup in open firmware and reset nvram etc, Reset the PRAM, system is upto date. I know this thing should go in for service, but it usually takes a bit of time the way things are set up in Canada. This is my only computer and I can't be without it at the moment. Any suggestions to make this machine more usuable for the time being would be greatly appreciated. It can go for hours with no problems, then BAM, it just wont stop sleeping.

I kind of stumbled upon the source of the problem. My Ambiant Light Sensor puts my computer to sleep. If I cover the left speaker grill near the top - where the sensor is I guess - then it puts the computer to sleep about 5-10 seconds later.
    Odd.
And now I can wake my computer up by setting off the sensor again, or covering it - but it takes longer. I cover the grill, and then 5 or 10 seconds later the computer wakes up. But the screen wont be on. So I have to put the computer to sleep again with the ALS, and then wake it the normal way (usually the keyboard).
So I guess the solution here (temporary) would be to find a way to deactive the ALS. Is there some file somewhere in the library I could move around? Thanks.
