Macbook wont sleep
My macbook suddenly developed the insomnia issue. It will not go to sleep anymore.
Weird since I had taken it to Apple Store for a cosmetic repair issue.
I know this topic was posted several times, and wanted to know if this issue was somehow resolved.
I dont want to send it in to Apple Care because I use the macbook everyday at work.
Does anyone know if the Apple Store can fix it without having to send it in??
Also for those that had this issue and sent it in for repair, was the issue resolved or was it not resolved.

If you have problem with your battery as well, it may be due to a loose connection between the battery and the logicboard (or whatever it is connected to).
When I had my MB repaired (lb replaced), my MB was only working when plugged in the AC, with no sleep mode available. Applecare and one of my friends were right, the battery connection wasn't correct. Easily repaired by a tech, though the MB had to be opened.

Every time I try to sleep my computer from the apple menu it doesn't work it will just sit. I did an upgrade from Leopard not a clean install.
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's KB article HT1776 with their tips.
Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.

Check in System Preferences > Energy Saver is "Wake for network access" checked? If so, uncheck it.
One user reported, " I couldn't make my macbook pro to go to sleep because I had my wireless headphone receiver still plugged in. I unplugged it and then it went to sleep."
Also, if you have an External Western Digital (WD) hard drive and have installed
WDDMService and WDSmartWareD on your Mac, it may not sleep. Fix is to un-install those....you don't need them to use the drive.
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
One provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.

After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
"I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
Check the printer queue!"
One user has had success, after trying all these tips, using an App. called PleaseSleep. I've never used it though.

hi guys...my macbook wont go to sleep on its own. i mean, Energy Saver Preferences is set to turn-off the display in 1 minute, and to make the computer sleep in 3 minutes - but the macbook wont turn off the display or sleep, based on the settings. Bt the way, when i make it sleep (Apple menu or by using Command-Option-Eject), the computer sleeps - no prob when sleep is manually executed.

In my case I think (not 100% sure other than a usb cause) was/is (b); a non-apple usb wired keyboard with its own usb ports or a bluetooth dongle plugged into my 27"s usb port. i'm in a similar boat and i've spent far too long scouring the apple discussions for a solution (with some issues you're better off googling than coming here for truth). i have also got a case open with my applecare coverage but the responses so far have verged on ignorant (i think they respond badly so you go away), so on we go.
i'm astounded that the terminal command pmset -g doesn't always provide an answer, but it seems a decent part of the solution. checking over the console and activity help too.
i've never had the issue with other hardware, so it must be a combo regarding the newer stuff + lion, wouldn't you say? -
Problems connecting to Monitor after waking up MacBook from sleep

I am experiencing a lot of problems connecting my macbook pro to external monitor once I put it to sleep. I have tried every options like setting up PRAM and all, but it just wont work. Sometimes the restart works and sometimes it wont. I am using a Samsung monitor. I have no idea what to do, as I keep on clicking Detect displays and it just wont do anything. Can anybody please help me as to how I can wake up my macbook from sleep and get it connected to the monitor. I have a mac keyboard and bluetooth mouse, but neither would wake the mac. HELP!!! My macbook wont boot up.
I was deleting some files off my system last night, Id put them in the trash and deleted them (there was quite alot!!) and the screen gradually went black and told me i needed to restart my computer by holding down the power key.
I tried doingt this but it wouldn't restart.
I left it a while and tried powering up, it seems to turn over once but the chimes dont kick in and nothing happens, the little light (is it the sleep light?) does come on but nothing else.
I really really hope someone can help!Since you are still using Panther, try booting from your System Install DVD. Try running the +repair disk+ & repair permission options.

Any fix for a macbook not sleeping/shutting down?
I have an early 2009 macbook running OSX 10.8. If I close the lid or manually select sleep/shutdown it works fine, BUT whenever I plug in my iphone to sync or charge, the macbook does not respond to a sleep/shutdown command (whether manual or by closing the lid). I cannot be the only person this is happening to.

5 ways to fix MacBook /Pro/Air that won't wake up from sleep
Some MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air won't wake up from sleep. My MacBook Pro was one of them. I have been googling for two days, and I learnt different ways to fix the problem. Not all the MacBooks can be fixed by the same one solution. Here I collect five common ways to fix the waking up problem together (trying to save time for others). If your MacBook doesn't wake up from sleep, you may try and see which solution works for yours. If any solution works, you may leave a message including your MacBook model and the solution. It may help the others.
Solution 1.Select a Startup Disk in System Preferences
I learnt this solution from AJ's post. AJ said even in a single boot MacBook, a startup disk is rarely selected, and sometimes, this may stop MacBooks from waking up from sleep. Here is how to fix it:
Launch System Preferences from the Apple menu
Click on Startup Disk
Select the startup disk of the OS you are using (click the single disk if there is only one)
Solution 2.reset SMC
SMC stands for Mac's System Management Controller. Many strange behaviors are related to disorder SMC setting. By resetting SMC, you may fix sleep problem of your MacBook. Here is how to reset SMC of your MacBook.
Reset SMC of a MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with an internal battery you should not remove on your own:
Shutdown your MacBook/Pro/Air
Connect the MagSafe power adapter
Press the (Left side)Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power button at the same time
Release all keys and the power button at the same time
Press the power button to turn on the MacBook/Pro/Air.
Reset SMC of a MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with an battery you can remove:
Shutdown your MacBook/Pro/Air
Disconnect the power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Install the battery back and connect the power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Solution 3.turn off Safe Sleep (hibernatemode)
Safe Sleep(or hibernatemode) was introduced in 2005. This Feature writes the content of MacBook's RAM onto the hard disk before you put the MacBook to sleep. Normally, when Macbook wake up, it does not need to read the hard disk for the RAM's content, because RAM is not turned off when Mac is sleeping. Safe Sleep is there just in case that the MacBook is short of power and turn itself off or you remove/change the battery. And that is why it is call SAFE sleep.
Sometimes, Safe sleep may cause MacBook can not wake up from sleep. You may try to turn it off, here is how:
Launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
run pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
If you see "hibernatemode 3", you may go on the process, or else you need to stop and try other solution
run sudo pmset hibernatemode 0
Enter your admin password
This very solution fix my MacBook Pro. If it doesn't fix your problem, you can restore the safe sleep feature with running following command line in Terminal:
sudo pmset hibernatemode 3
Solution 4.Switch system to another hard disk if you have two
If you have installed a second hard drive (or SSD) on your MacBook or MacBook Pro, and have waking up problem of the mac, you may try to install Mac OS X system on the other disk of the book.
I have removed my optical drive of my MacBook Pro, and installed a second hard drive. When I installed Lion on the second hard drive, my MacBook Pro could not wake up from sleep. Then I tried installing Lion on the original hard drive, the MacBook Pro did not have the problem.
Solution 5.Reinstall system
Backup all you data, and try re-install the Mac OS X system. It always will be a solution to Mac problem.
I hope some solution above will work for your MacBook. If not, maybe you just have a broken Mac, it is time call Apple.

Hey there.
So before ppl tell me to do more rearch or try resetting the smc or pram or whatever else they normally say to do... I've already tried all of it...
been looking for the past 6 months and posting here is my last option...
My MacBook just wont start.
I hit the power button.. the little indicator light on the front comes on. The fun runs at a high speed and theb I hear the hardware disc and the fun just shot off.
That's it.. nothing on the screen..
and it'll do this over and over and over again..
Sometimes after 10 minutes it'll start..
Other times more than 2 days and nothing..
It just wont turn on...
Its been 2 days and no results.
I can't put my MacBook to sleep or close the lid because THIS is what happens to it..
I can't even shut it down or restart it because this happens to it...
I'm at the end of my rope..
All my university crap is on here..
thankfully I atleast backed up my notes online..
but without this computer I'm screwed...

I put my MacBook to sleep with Firefox 4 beta open and when I went to use it again it had vanished. My spotlight search yielded v. 3.6 and the v.4 beta installation file (.dmg). I opened v. 3.6 and declined to transfer v4 Add-ons . All tabs that were opened on v.4 beta opened on v. 3.6. I closed 3.6 and reinstalled v.4 beta from the disc image. I was warned to replace previous version (3.6) - which I did. V4 beta installed intact (bookmarks, add-ons, history etc.) but I lost my open tabs. My only concern is that I was required to replace v. 3.6 and don't want to risk losing bookmarks and history if v. 4 proves unstable. I am otherwise pleased with the new look and performance.

Assuming that nothing is pressing on the Home button when this occurs, try the basic steps as needed:
1. Reset phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.
2. Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
3. Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup.
If #3 doesn't help, there is a hardware problem such as a defective home button, and you should make an appt. with an Apple Store Genius bar. -

I wake the Macbook with external keyboard and the display shows up on TV just fine for a second or two then it looks like something changes and then it starts rolling.
It does not do this when Macbook is awake it only does it after it's put to sleep.Probably the resolution is switching from a mirrored resolution to some other resolution that the TV can't work from. Try this; shut down the MacBook. Cable up the TV to the MB and also the external keyboard and mouse. Hold down the Shift key on the external keyboard, hit the start button on the MacBook and immediately close the lid on the MB after you've hit the start button. Continue holding the Shift key down on the external keyboard until you see the grey screen with the spinning gear at which time you can release the Shift key. The MB should now finish starting up in Safe mode with only the external screen being on. Hopefully the screen will not be rolling.
Once the MB finishes booting, go into System Preferences/Displays and set the resolution to the optimal/desired resolution for your TV. Hopefully this choice will stick through subsequent restarts and also correct the issue of the rolling screen under the conditions in the scenario you described. -
My macbook seems to be going crazy. At certain points (and for hours) I get the oh snap page on chrome, safari doesnt work, macbook wont let me create any files or for example upload music to itunes. I restored my mac so im sure its not a malware problem. The only thing that solves it is switching off and on , but sometimes I have to do that for 6-7 times before its ok or wait for a few hours. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -

my macbook wont start the screen turn blue and stay like that for hrs. I use MacbookPro late 2011 with Maverick, when i put iPhone 5 or another cellphone askew on left corner of touch pad and slide it to keyboard, the macbook will sleep, i don't know what the problem is, it occur on another macbook pro late 2011
It may well be a driver issue but considering the loading: Xorg trying to load different drivers is somewhat normal. @cafe you can see that these are autoconfigured by X above the loading in the log:

As long as one of the drivers gets loaded, which it apparently does the failing of the others is fine.
