Macbook wont start makes whirring noise

I got handed back my macbook back by a "friend" today and it is dead - no screen no light on caps lock etc. The battery is still working and charged. When I press the power button the machine emits a continuous whirring noise which continues unless i disconnect the battery. This does not feel good. Any ideas? Thanks

HI,
Did you try booting from your install disk?
Insert the nstaller disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
Available disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see
Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

  • Macbook wont start and makes ticking noise

The subject line says it all. My macbook wont start and it makes clicking noises from inside the case, kind of like a watch. The display turns on and the chime goes when it starts, but the screen stays white and nothing happens.

You can run diagnostics from the OSX disc. Insert disc one and while it is booting hold down the d key. This should take you into diagnostics.
You might also try to reset PRAM AND PMU first.

First: Are you wearing/regularly checking your radiation badge?
Second: What does the little Time Machine icon (in the menubar) say when you click on it?  Alternatively, what does Time Machine Preferences (in System Preferences) tell you is going on?

  • My macbook wont start. it just comes to a black screen that sais no bootable device.  -asian gal

My macbook wont start. it just comes to a black screen that sais no bootable device.

Ok then either the drive has failed or the cable from the drive to the logic board has failed or the drive is so corrupted that the computer doesn't see the OS on it.
Boot the computer from the original install DVD that came with your system. If your system is new and came with Lion then at startup hold down the Command+r keys and that will either boot you to the built in Recovery HD or to the internet recovery system. From either of those you can check the drive for error and or see if the computer even knows there is a drive in the system.

Not saying you have to reinstall...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

There indeed may be something wrong with it, but we're just other users here... have you tried Apple Hardware Test? (Holding the d key down while booting from the Install Disc).

  • Macbook wont start. Panicking now

Hi, Macbook wont start up. I went thru the troubleshooting pages and the battery seems fine, adaptor seems fine. Didnt change the PRAM because I cant find the cmd button!!!! That's what I was worried about. Okay, off I go. Thanks

  • Does MacBook Pro make whirring noise even when shutdown?

Was wondering if this was normal. I have a new MacBook Pro that I hardly use so I shut it down and store it under my desk. I recently noticed it makes the whirring noise from startup, about once a day. My laptop is not in sleep mode but completely shutdown. Checked the laptop and everything works fine, just curious about the random whirring noise.

If it is off, there should be no sound at all. Check the log files to see if anything pops out.

  • 12" iBk wont start- makes noises tho

iBook 1.2 Ghz 10.4.11 started just shutting off for no reason (No battery- just AC), now it wont start up at all. Ive tried the PMU reset several times, no good.
Now I hear power entering the ibook on start but I just get a (slightly) lumminated black screen . No chime. Just freezes there until I unplug it.
If I can get it to boot (looks less likely now) what Hardware test CD does it use?
Any ideas? The DC in board? Does this have a clock battery?
    Thanks so much

    Hey Steve,
OK we shimmed the 14" iBook too and replaced the HD. (The shim is nice and thick!) Now the ibook (14") starts with a loud fan noise, then beeps 4X, with 3 flashes.
OK, see here I'm getting confused and too many things are going on and being changed.
I did look up the error code about the Boot ROM, but how is this fixed?
Well if it is the Boot ROM it isn't repairable except by new logic board or swapping the ROM from an identical board.
However here's what the Service Manual for the 1.2 12" says:
"Computer beeps four times at startup
    1. Four beeps indicates a bad checksum for the remainder of the boot ROM. The ROM
(which is located on the logic board) is bad.
    2. If a RAM card is installed in the expansion slot, remove it and put in known-good and compatible RAM and restart.
    • If symptom does NOT repeat, replace RAM card.
    • If symptom repeats, replace logic board.
    3. If no RAM card is installed, replace logic board."
So I didn't realize the RAM could cause this symptom.
If it is the ROM it could have been killed by static if you touched the logic board.

  • Macbook wont start -- have to reset SMC and PRAM

    Hi,
Sometimes, when I try to switch on the laptop, it wont start.. Nothing happens.
After reseting the PRAM and SMC, it comes up. But the issue is for the last 3days, I have to do this everytime.
Can you help me out on this one? Sometimes, I had to wait for like 5-7 minutes and then I have to switch on the laptop after reseting.
I dont know, whether it is affecting my laptop h/w.
I bought this 5months ago. its Macbook Air Mid 2013 model.

    Hello there, tcpipv6.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up a good number of steps to try for troubleshooting issues with your MacBook not turning on:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

  • Help - my MacBook wont start?

The led is on but the machine wont start up?
I have tryed to hold the powerbutton down and violet close, but when I try to start up, the same problem appears :-(

I think you'll need to tell us a bit more: MacBook model, and what exactly happens.
For example, you're posting here under "MacBook Air" but refer to an LED... which the MBA doesn't have.
After holding down the Power button for a while (which shuts down the Mac no matter what), is that LED still on?
When you attempt to start it, can you hear the start-up gong?
Does the screen remain dark, or do you get to see at least a grey screen? If so, how far does it go before it stalls?

  • My MacBook wont start: Asking me to insert booth disc

I was trying to set up my mac to back up to a new Seagate External Hard Disk and during the process, i was asked to restart the macbook. When i tried to restart, i then got a black screen: asking that i insert a booth disc? I am so lost and it wont start. I also had not even backed it up. I am scared of losing my data. Can anyone help

Hi Guys Forgive my lack of details....this is actually my first time on this forum and i am not that much of a computer guru. My system is a Mac Book Pro, bought it in 2009 and was running on OS X.
The seagate external hard disc is a 1TB "Free Agent GoFlex". It comes with it's soft ware that installs when connected for the first time. So when i connected it, it installed and then gave me the option of restarting the Mac right away or later on. So i chose to restart right away......One thing i remember is that i did not disconnect it from the Mac while restarting. So this message then comes up on a black screen "No bootable device.....insert boot disc and press any key". I was at a loss as to what to do....so i came online and posted the earlier message.
I have disconnected the Hard disc, but still the same message comes up each time i attempt to start it.
I would really appreciate any info that could help me resolve what ever the problem is.
    Thanks
